Apple AirPods now Made in India

According to a new report, the Cupertino based giant is planning to locally make its hearables in India. Future AirPods will be mass-produced by Foxconn from its factory situated in Hyderabad. In other words, the AirPods will soon join arrive with the Made in India tag as well. Apparently, Foxconn has approved an investment of 400 million US Dollars for its Hyderabad plant.

The PTI report states that sources are claiming that AirPods production will kick off in India sometime by December 2024. This means that Indian consumers will have to wait till 2025 to buy AirPods made locally. The iPhone maker was first rumored to begin AirPods production earlier this year but with a smaller 200 million US Dollar initial investment.

As of right now, Apple is selling its AirPods (2nd & 3rd Gen) and AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) in the country. Companies, realizing the dangers of relying on a single region for production, started to set up factories in India, which is already a large market for tech giants. One of these companies, Foxconn, has decided to invest $600 million into a phone and chip project in India.

Foxconn’s India Investments Reflect Growing Importance of the India in Global Tech Supply Chain

Foxconn continues to invest in India without slowing down. The company, which has been producing a portion of iPhone and AirPods in the country for some time, is now investing $600 million in India. What’s more, this isn’t just one project, the company has two different projects in mind. The first of these is valued at $360 million and will focus on producing smartphone parts. This single project alone is expected to create 12,000 new jobs in the country.

Also, there’s a second project. Foxconn and Applied Materials are spending $240 million to build a factory for making chip tools, creating 1,000 new jobs. This big investment is part of Foxconn’s plan to spread out its business across the world and make more kinds of products. It also matches India’s goal of bringing more high-tech manufacturing into the country. Foxconn and Applied Materials didn’t provide more details about their projects in India.

However, as we mention above, this is not the first investment for this company in the region. Foxconn previously partnered with an Indian company, Vedanta, to build a chip and display factory in India. But Foxconn left that project last month. We don’t know why the $19.5 billion deal was cancelled. Still, looking at the new investments, we can say that the company’s thoughts about India have not changed and the cancellation did not stem from this.

Known Apple supplier Foxconn is apparently eyeing the chipmaking subsidies being offered by the Indian government. The news arrives soon after the company pulled out of its multi-billion dollar deal with Vedanta for a chip manufacturing partnership.

Foxconn seeks chip subsidiaries to expand in India

After the deal with Vedanta was terminated, it appears that the contract manufacturer is planning on using the incentives being offered in India to set up a new semiconductor unit in the region. Foxconn stated earlier today (11th July 2023) that it is working on applying under the Modified Programme for Semiconductors and Display Fab Ecosystem in India. This is the sizeable 10 billion US Dollar incentive that helps lower the capital costs for semiconductor and display manufacturing projects by up to 50 percent.

As per their official statement, “We have been actively reviewing the landscape for optimal partners. Foxconn is committed to India and sees the country successfully establishing a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.” Notably, the company’s recent split with Vedanta also deals a hit to the Modi government which has been pushing for semiconductor production within the country.

But while the Foxconn-Vedanta deal fell apart, the former is still looking to expand in India by setting up its own semiconductor and display manufacturing unit. Furthermore, the company is also in talks with partners that are both domestic and international to make semiconductors in the region for products that include the growing EV market (Electric Vehicles).

Foxconn, the company known for manufacturing Apple iPhones, had last year announced a joint venture with Vedanta, an oil and metal corporation, to build a semiconductor plant in India.

Now, just weeks after the announcement, Foxconn has pulled out of the deal that is reportedly worth $19.5 billion. The company says that the deal was ended mutually, and it appears that Vedanta will move ahead with other partners.

In a statement, Foxconn said: “In order to explore more diverse development opportunities, according to a mutual agreement, Foxconn has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta.” It is now working towards removing its name from what is now a wholly-owned entity of Vedanta.

This is a blow to the Indian government, which has been trying to put efforts toward economic growth and government programs that are trying to promote manufacturing in the country.

Although several companies, including Apple, are working towards diversifying manufacturing outside of China because of political and economic uncertainties, India stands to benefit the most but hasn’t been able to make the most of this opportunity yet.

A former Samsung Electronics employee was indicted last month for the alleged leak of company secrets to rival firms. South Korean prosecutors have revealed further details, claiming that the ex-Samsung executive aimed to utilize the stolen data to support Foxconn in establishing a chip factory in China.

The individual in question has been identified as Choi Jinseog, according to Reuters. Although the initial indictment did not disclose any names, media reports subsequently linked Choi to Foxconn through his association with the company. The indictment suggests that Choi’s firm, Jin Semiconductor, which had a contract with Foxconn in 2018, obtained confidential information about Samsung’s supplier network, trade secrets, and cleanroom management.

The Allegations against Choi Jinseog: Leaking Company Secrets

Choi reportedly poached a significant number of employees from Samsung and its affiliates in order to illicitly acquire information. He also obtained cleanroom information through Cho Young-sik, an employee at Samoo Architects & Engineers, a Samsung C&T subsidiary involved in architectural design and construction management. Additionally, Choi allegedly acquired blueprints of Samsung’s plant from an employee at HanmiGlobal.

While the prosecution claims that the stolen information was intended to aid Foxconn in building a chip factory in China, Choi’s lawyer maintains that the factory was never constructed. The lawyer argues that the information Choi obtained does not pertain to chip design or manufacturing and suggests that industry standards are publicly available for cleanroom construction. Foxconn, Samoo Architects & Engineers, and HanmiGlobal have not been implicated in any wrongdoing.

Choi Jinseog, once a prominent figure in the South Korean chip industry, had a successful career at Samsung, where he played a key role in the development of DRAM memory chips and wafer processing technology. He later joined SK Hynix as Chief Technology Officer. The intended Foxconn plant was reportedly meant to produce 20nm DRAM memory chips with a planned production capacity of 100,000 wafers per month. It is important to note that the allegations against Choi Jinseog are subject to legal proceedings and further investigation.

The joint venture, called SiliconAuto, will be based in the Netherlands and will be equally owned by the two companies. SiliconAuto will focus on developing semiconductors for the growing number of computer-controlled features and modules in vehicles, especially those needed for electric vehicles.

The joint venture will also provide a robust supply of essential components to Stellantis, which will help the automaker to meet its goal of becoming a software-defined company. “This joint venture with Foxconn is a major step forward in our ambition to become a leader in the software-defined vehicle era,” said Ned Curic, chief technology officer of Stellantis. “SiliconAuto will provide us with a secure and sustainable source of semiconductors, which is essential to our ability to deliver on our product roadmap.”

“We are excited to partner with Stellantis to create SiliconAuto,” said Young Liu, chairman of Foxconn. “This joint venture will combine our strengths in semiconductor design and manufacturing to create a new global leader in automotive semiconductors.” SiliconAuto is expected to begin operations in 2026. It seems like Foxconn may look into investing in a power plant for their factory in Vietnam, since it has been running into some power troubles lately.

In a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, Vietnam has been grappling with an energy crisis due to several factors, including extreme heat, surging electricity consumption, and dwindling water levels in hydropower stations. As a result, the country has implemented a rolling blackout plan, adversely impacting the production capacity of major factories belonging to industry giants such as Samsung, Foxconn, Canon, and Luxshare.

The affected factories primarily reside in the northern Vietnamese provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang. Since the morning of June 5, power outages have been experienced in at least five industrial areas, causing disruptions to operations. Foxconn, with its factories located in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, along with Samsung Electronics, Goertek, and AAC Technologies, has received requests from the Vietnam Electricity Company to change their operational schedules or reduce electricity usage during peak hours.

Despite the challenges posed by the power cuts, sources indicate that Foxconn has managed to maintain normal operations. In a positive move to mitigate future energy-related issues, Foxconn has announced plans to construct its own power plant in 2024, which would provide the company with greater control over its energy supply and reinforce its operations.

The Indian government is planning to reject the request for billion of dollars worth of funding by the Vedanta – Foxconn joint venture. According to the Bloomberg report, authorities will soon officially inform the Joint Venture (JV) of the rejection of the funding.

Last year in September Billionaire Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta joined hands with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd popularly known as Foxconn to manufacture 28nm chips in India. The 69-year-old businessman had made headlines with this ambitious project and had dreamed of building India’s own Silicon Valley.

The JV was the largest-ever corporate investment in India to date with the Gujarat government, pledging a massive investment of $22 billion. The purpose of this substantial funding was to establish the nation’s inaugural semiconductor manufacturing facility, marking a significant milestone in India’s technological advancement.

The project was expected to create more than 1,00,000 jobs and was expected to benefit from generous subsidies and incentives under the Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-27. These incentives included complete exemption of stamp duty on land acquisition and subsidized access to essential resources like water and electricity. 

However, reports suggest that the venture’s request for government assistance, aiming to secure a substantial amount of funding, has not met the specified criteria set by the government. Furthermore, in order to proceed with the construction of 28nm chips, the project is currently lacking both a technology partner and a manufacturing-grade technology license.

Foxconn has signed an agreement to manufacture Apple’s AirPods and is set to build a $200 million factory in India. This deal marks Foxconn’s debut in AirPods production, reflecting the company’s push to diversify beyond China, where AirPods are currently made by various suppliers. As we mention above, the company is responsible for assembling around 70% of all iPhones.

The company intends to invest over $200 million in the new Indian AirPods plant, located in the southern state of Telangana. The total value of the AirPods order has not been revealed. However, considering that even the factory costs $200 million, we can say that it is a pretty big deal. Sources say Foxconn officials weighed the pros and cons of producing AirPods, given their lower profit margins. Ultimately, they chose to pursue the deal to strengthen ties with Apple and secure future orders for new products.

Apple reportedly requested the shift to Indian production. Foxconn competes with other Taiwanese firms, like Wistron Corp and Pegatron Corp, to win orders from the tech giant. It is unclear how Foxconn’s production plans will affect current AirPod suppliers like Luxshare Precision Industry, which has not commented on the matter. In November, Goertek Inc revealed that an overseas client suspended assembly work for a smart acoustic product, identified by analysts as AirPods Pro 2, resulting in a revenue loss of up to 3.3 billion yuan ($480 million).

For those unaware, the Taiwanese manufacturing giant is the largest iPhone maker and a major supplier of Apple. Now, it is setting up a new manufacturing site in the Indian state of Telangana. This new site is expected to create over 100,000 new jobs. This follows a year after the company announced that it will be investing 500 million US Dollars in the country. The announcement was made after Foxconn Chairman Yopung Liu and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao signed an agreement at the Chief Miniter’s official residence.

Thanks to the new agreement, Foxconn can possibly bring in a large number of employees over the course of the next 10 years. But unfortunately, the exact amount of investment being for this new project is still unclear. Furthermore, Chairman Young Liu also announced that Foxconn will be donating an Foxconn hire over 100,000 people in India, which is the largest prototyping center in India that spans across a 78,000 sq ft building.

It’s been just months since Apple launched the iPhone 14 lineup, and rumors about the iPhone 15 have already started surfacing online, and it appears that not just rumors but the company itself is moving at a rapid pace.

As per the latest report, the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 has entered early “machine trial production” with the Cupertino-based technology giant’s primary assembler Foxconn.

The report adds that Foxconn has received instructions from Apple to begin “new machine trial production” for the new iPhone 15 and to begin new product introduction (NPI) for the device. The process is meant to introduce the device’s specific design and production needs for the company.

The development comes ahead of the mass production of smartphones, which is still several months away. This time, the company appears to be going through the process early, given that the production will be a bit different as manufacturing will take place in two countries — China and India.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series is expected to have four models — iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Ultra. The Apple iPhone 15 Ultra will be replacing the Pro Max model and will be the top-end offering from the brand. As per the report, the Ultra model will have a titanium frame, a solid-state haptic volume button instead of physical buttons, and a USB-C port with faster transfer speeds.

This time around, all the iPhone models launching will come with a Dynamic Island, unlike the iPhone 14 series, where only the Pro models have the new front panel. All the phones are expected to have a 48MP primary camera sensor, and they will have a USB-C port.

Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, announced on Thursday that its Singapore company had paid $500 million for 4.08 million shares in Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited (~ INR 100 crore). The business is planning to boost the production of its Telangana plant in the country. This news came after the disputes happened over the Foxconn unit in China. Anyway, this would generate as many as 53,000 new employees and that could be great news for both the country and local people.

After Reuters reported last month that Foxconn, an Apple supplier, planned to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory in India over the course of two years, two government officials with knowledge of the matter pointed to a production adjustment as it faces disruptions in China as the reason behind the $500 million infusion into its India unit. According to insiders, Foxconn intends to hire 53,000 more workers over the next two years, bringing the total number of employees at its plant in southern India up to 70,000.

According to a government source, the company informed Tamil Nadu officials of its plans to step up hiring at the Indian facility as a result of disruptions in China. Meanwhile, a person in Taiwan with knowledge of the situation claimed that Foxconn was expanding its operations in India to boost its capacity for entry-level models and to satisfy Indian demand. Foxconn announced on Thursday that the factory had relaxed its “closed-loop” management limits. The company made headlines in recent weeks for implementing tight COVID-19 controls at its Zhengzhou production in China, which led to worker dissatisfaction.

By 2025, according to JPMorgan analysts, Apple may produce one out of every four iPhones in India as the tech giant shifts some of its manufacturing away from China due to rising geopolitical tensions and tight COVID-19 lockdowns in that nation. According to reports, Pegatron, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer for Apple, started building the new iPhone 14 in India last month. Apple launched the latest iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series of flagship smartphones a couple of months back. For the first time, the devices come with a significant difference between both lineups.

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro series has good demand in the market compared to the standard iPhone 14 lineup but it appears that the company will soon be facing shipment issues for the popular iPhone models because of its contract manufacturer Foxconn.

According to a new report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, shipments of Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models in the fourth quarter of this year will be significantly lower than the market consensus due to protests at Foxconn’s main factory in China.

The Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China, has been significantly affected by the protests by the workers over unfavorable working conditions, which he believes will adversely impact the Q4 2022 shipments forecast by around 20 percent or about 70-75 million units.

He adds that the average capacity utilization rate at the factory in the month of November was only 20 percent, but that is expected to increase to about 30 percent to 40 percent in December. He believes that the production issues could result in iPhone revenue being “significantly lower than the market consensus by 20–30% or more” this quarter.

Ming-Chi Kuo further notes that Pegatron and Luxshare, two other contract manufacturers for Apple, have each received about 10 percent of iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max orders from Foxconn. However, those orders aren’t expected to start shipping until late December or early January of the next year.

Currently, the delay time for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro models is at least four weeks when the device is ordered through the company’s official online store in the United States as the Cupertino-based tech giant is struggling to maintain supply.

The effects of the tension in the Foxconn factory still continue. A riot broke out yesterday at the company’s factory in China. Over 100 Foxconn workers were seen pushing past outnumbered guards. Several videos were posted on social media, with one showing workers pushing past barricades as witnesses chanted “fight, fight” in the background. Several workers were injured at the plant responsible for producing 50% of iPhones sold worldwide. Lastly, Foxconn offers workers $1,400 to stop protesting and leave the factory.

After the events escalated, Foxconn took action to end the protests. The company has offered workers a $1,400 (10,000 yuan) settlement in an attempt to end protests at the facility. According to the information received, this is a money equivalent to approximately two months’ salary of these workers.

Foxconn offered 8,000 yuan ($1,120) to workers who agreed to quit their positions at the factory, and another 2,000 yuan (around $280) after they boarded buses to depart the facility. The offer was made by the human resources department of the company by sending a text message. However, the problem that caused the workers’ revolt in the first place was the already delayed bonus payments. So, it is unknown whether the employees accepted the offer or not. Still, the Apple supplier has apologized, claiming that the miscommunication on share was the result of a ‘technical error’.

Foxconn factory was forced to lock down in October following a covid outbreak because of China’s strict “zero-covid” policy. Since than the company prevented assembly line workers from leaving the factory surroundings and forced workers to consume their meals inside dorm rooms instead of eating in the dining room. In fact, some employees, tired of the restrictions, secretly escaped from the factory and resigned.

Foxconn officials, who worried that Apple wants to move iPhone production outside of China, will quadruple its headcount in the next two years. Foxconn is one of China’s largest taxpayers and the country’s largest employers. Possible landing points for iPhone production are India, Vietnam and Mexico but no official announcement yet

Apple supplier Foxconn is apparently planning on raising its workforce in India. The supplier is making this move to help raise production, which in turn, would enable it to meet the high iPhone demand in the market.

The Cupertino based giant’s largest supplier is planning on quadrupling its workforce in India. Foxconn is apparently going to raise the number of workers for its iPhone factory by such a large amount in India over the course of the next two years, as per two government officials (Via TheHindu) close to the matter. Interestingly enough, this news arrives after the iPhone maker saw disruptions in its production in China due to local lockdowns.

For those unaware, Foxconn’s largest iPhone plant in Zhengzhou, China was closed down due to the Chinese government imposing a local lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. This caused operations to halt abruptly and also lowered Apple’s shipment expectations for its latest iPhone 14 series models in the fourth and final quarter of this year. So now, Foxconn is reportedly planning on boosting its workforce in its plant in South India to 70,000. In other words, it would have to bring in more than 53,000 new workers overt he next two years.

While the new hiring would mark a significant scale up in production in the Tamil Nadu plant in India, Foxconn’s Zhengzhou is still its largest iPhone plant that employees a whopping 200,000 workers. Meaning, we can expect this move from Foxconn to be a way to dampen the blow of its largest plant being closed down temporarily. It would also help it deal with any possible future lockdowns in the region by growing its workforce in India.

It’s been a couple of years since the pandemic hit, and after stricter lockdowns, some economies are still facing an uphill task of fully recovering from the economic slowdown. Even, China is struggling to cope with the ongoing inflation and components shortage across the country along with the prolonged Covid restrictions which are making things worse. Manufacturing has reduced, and even Apple’s production facility is not unaffected and is reeling under the same circumstances.

In a press release, Apple confirmed the delay in production for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max which may lead to “longer wait times”. The Covid restrictions are affecting the production capacity at its iPhone factory in Zhengzhou. However, the company remains intact with its policy of “prioritizing the health and safety of the workers in our supply chain.”

The “strong demand” for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is still growing due to better specifications and the presence of the new Apple Bionic A16 chipset. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus sales are not as expected and even the company has scaled down its production capacity.

Some reports last month pointed towards a 30% decline in iPhone production due to Covid restrictions at the Foxconn production facility. Moreover, some workers even left the Foxconn facility due to long stays inside the building with limited food supplies during the Covid outbreak.

The Cupertino giant is gradually shifting away the production capacity from China to other countries. Apple started the iPhone 14 production in India to bridge the gap between demand and production. We expect Apple to normalise manufacturing with a similar approach if the prolonged Covid restrictions are affecting the overall capacity in China.

China has just recently ordered a seven day long lockdown in a region, which is also where Foxconn Technology has its largest iPhone plant. This would likely affect Apple shipments as its largest suppliers biggest plant is down for a week.

According to a BusinessStandard report, the Chinese government has implemented a lockdown around Foxconn’s main iPhone plant in Zhengzhou. The lockdown is currently in effect and will last until the 9th of November 2022. This news was also published on the local government’s official WeChat account. As of right now, the government has barred all vehicles to operate in the region of the lockdown, except those that are carrying essential goods. The lockdown was implemented in Zhengzhou after the area saw a sizeable jump to 359 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. This was up from just 95 from a just a day prior.

The sudden lockdown is a part of China initiative of Covid Zero approach to controlling each outbreak. Now, Foxconn’s main iPhone plant was unfortunately caught in this zone and has had its operations abruptly halted. The Taiwanese company is the largest supplier in Apple’s supply chain and has had to force some of its 200,000 strong staff into quarantine. Furthermore, some were pushed to flee the site, with some even leaving on foot. Following this lockdown, the company will also face complications to recruit and bring in new staff members.

Foxconn would even be troubled to ship production materials to continue their operations. At the moment, neither Foxconn or Apple has given out any statement regarding this news. Although, the former is working on raising wages and arranging backups from its other Chinese plants to mitigate this sudden operations disruption in its Zhengzhou iPhone assembly line. While Apple has just launched its iPhone 14 lineup, it refrained from bumping orders due to an ongoing economic slump, which has led to a decline in smartphone sales.

Over the last couple of years, Apple has been slowly but steadily diversifying its supply chain and assembly for its products. Now, a new report has suggested that the company might soon shift a significant portion of its iPhone production to India.

The news arrives from a JP Morgan analyst, Gokul Hariharan, (Via Reuters) who stated that Taiwanese suppliers such as Foxconn and Pegatron will be central figures in the Cupertino based giant’s plans of moving its manufacturing process away from China. For those unaware, we have already covered multiple reports of Apple working on shifting away its production and assembly process for its products like iPhone, iPad, Macs, and others away from China and into new regions like Vietnam and iPhone.

As of right now, it already has begun production from these different nations, but it seems that India’s role in the manufacturing process might be expanded significantly in the next couple of years. The first iPhone was first assembled in India back in 2017, but due to the COVID-19, local lockdowns meant that the region only accounted for around 3 percent of all iPhone production. But now, it seems like this figure will be bumped a lot, with JP Morgan analysts claiming that soon 25 percent of all iPhones will be made in India by 2025.

This basically means that one in four iPhones will be made in India. Furthermore, the brand is also apparently planning on moving about 5 percent of iPhone 14 production to India by the end of this year. On the other hand, China is expected to lose around 25 percent of total production of all Apple products, including Macs, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods as well.
