Honda has pulled the wraps around its Honda SC e electric scooter. The Honda SC e was on display during this year’s Japan Mobility Show. The performance metrics of the SC e were also released by the Japanese automaker.

The Honda SC e Concept is one concept e-scooter that may meet with us soon

The Honda SC e concept is part of the fast-expanding portfolio of electric mobility offerings by Honda. Honda plans to expand its collection of battery-powered vehicles and the SC e is signposted by its dual battery pack setup. The scooter has a modern design with a full-width LED light bar at the front. The LED light bar also features an illuminated Honda logo while foldable pillion-foot pegs are also featured. The electric scooter has a single but spacious seat with a pillion-grab handle. The floorboard of the Honda SC e has blue accents that are also present on the handlebar, motor, tail section, and front lighting panel.

The Honda SC e bears some resemblance to the Honda EM 1e but is noticeably bigger. Its two removable battery packs occupy a significant proportion of the storage space. The 1.3kWh battery packs are positioned behind the scooter’s seat. The Honda SC e has a range of 100km with its two battery packs. It has front disc and rear drum brakes, as well as, rear mono shocks and telescopic front forks.

The Honda SC e rolls on 12-inch tires and the scooter is expected to come with Bluetooth connectivity. It has a digital instrument cluster but this was not showcased on the concept model on display during the Japan Mobility Show. Honda is yet to provide availability and pricing details for the SC e but it could be released in 2024.

Japanese car maker Honda is about to unveil the MEV-Van electric delivery van concept which is expected to feature removable batteries for greater versatility. The MEV-Van concept will be tested with removable batteries in actual delivery operations in Japan. The new electric van concept is expected to be showcased at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show ahead of the tests.

The Honda MEV-Van is an experimental, fully electric version of the N-Van. It is retrofitted with removable batteries and will be tested in collaboration with Japan’s Yamato Transport. Yamato is Japan’s largest door-to-door delivery service company. The Honda N-Van transformed into a production vehicle and was unveiled last month.

The MEV-Van concept has a fully electric powertrain and its Honda Power Pack e-modules can be removed for charging. The battery packs are mounted under the cabin floor of the electric van, and secured by a set of hatches. The MEV-Van lacks a charging port on the front grille and this may provide some challenges. The choice of a removable system of batteries eliminates the long standby time for charging. It also reduces the imbalance of peak power usage.

The range of the Honda MEV-Van has not been announced but it is expected to be lower than the 210km range of the Honda N-Van standard model. Honda will use solar panels for charging the EV and the demonstration of the MEV-Van concept will take place next month. It will be tested in collection and delivery operations to establish its sufficiency for professional use.

Honda continues to pursue a carbon-neutral future by 2050. The N-Van has undergone trials ahead of its unveiling in Japan in spring 2024. Honda has not provided the production trajectory for the MEV-Van electric concept yet.

This shows that the Japanese manufacturer has a significant say in the future of the market. For instance, the company could maintain its current success and resist innovation. But Honda, determined to move forward, is preparing to launch Indonesia’s first electric motorcycle model. Their new electric motorcycle, the Honda EM1, is now ready. The interior screens will feature graphics developed on the Unreal Engine, the same engine that powers the displays in the GMC Hummer EV.

The aircraft development arm of Honda Motor Co. has announced plans to launch a new compact business jet by 2028. The jet is being developed by Honda Aircraft Co., the US-based aircraft manufacturing unit of the automaker.

Honda Aircraft announced yesterday (June 13) that it is making progress in the development of the business jet. The company says it plans to obtain US Aviation authorities certification for flight operations. The new jet will be a commercial product and is categorized as a light jet. The new Honda jet will be bigger than the HondaJet. The HondaJet is in the very light jet category and can seat up to 8 persons.

The new Honda business jet will come with significant improvements over its predecessor. It will have 20% better fuel efficiency than a typical light jet. Honda Aircraft Co. says the new jet can fly across North America without refueling. The new jet, when it enters the market, will be Honda’s first in the light jet category. It is based on the HondaJet 2600 Concept unveiled by the budding aircraft manufacturer in 2021.

There are still several key aspects of the new Honda business jet still lacking at this time. Honda will release more details about the jet including pricing and timing to accept orders later. The new HondaJet is still up to five years away from launch. It will however have to compete with newer models from the heavy hitters in leaders in the aircraft manufacturing market.

This advanced navigation system optimizes route planning for electric vehicle drivers, highlighting charging stations along the way to reduce travel time. Additionally, Google Maps can estimate the required charging time based on the destination, enabling drivers to plan their trips more efficiently. Furthermore, when the destination is a DC fast charging station, the system can initiate battery preconditioning, which is raising the temperature of the car battery to facilitate faster charging times when one reaches the charging station.

Previously, Honda utilized custom-embedded Android software in some of its vehicles, but with Google Built-in, they are leveraging Google’s full suite of services. In the Acura ZDX, drivers can access popular Google apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and more through the Google Store.

Despite the integration of Google Built-in, the Acura ZDX will still support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices and user preferences. Furthermore, Honda has also revealed that the Acura ZDX will be the first model to be exclusively sold online, further solidifying the brand’s commitment to digital innovation.

The Honda EM1 E is the first electric moped by Honda. It has a 1.7kW motor that delivers a maximum torque of 90Nm and a top speed of 45km/h. The EM1 E will square up against the Yamaha Neo e-scooter unveiled in 2022.

You can fully recharge the Honda EM1 E in 6 hours.

Honda plans to sell the bike via lease purchase with 3 color variants available. These are hues of white, silver, and black. The bike comes with front disc and rear drum brakes. The suspension system consists of telescopic forks and twin shocks at the rear.

There is no official release date for the new e-bike but we expect this to be later this year. Pricing information for the new Honda e-bike is lacking at this time. It is expected that the bike will come with an affordable and competitive price tag.

Honda is seeking to catch up with rivals who are leading the charge in the electric vehicle race, as the industry experiences a faster transition away from traditional cars and trucks. Honda’s Plan to Develop Smaller EVs with Its Own Platform Starting in 2026

One of the biggest challenges faced by automakers in the EV industry is the high cost of batteries, which can make EVs 40% more expensive to produce than gas-powered cars. Honda is hoping that a different technology – solid-state batteries – will eventually help bring down these costs and make EVs more accessible.

Lithium-ion batteries, the current industry standard, use a liquid electrolyte to conduct electricity between the cathode and anode. In contrast, solid-state batteries replace that liquid with more stable materials like ceramics, reducing the size and cost of the battery pack. Honda has joined the race to develop solid-state batteries, although it arguably lags behind better-resourced peers like Toyota and Nissan. Other carmakers like General Motors and Ford also have solid-state ambitions.

However, Mibe is aware that getting solid-state technology ready for mass consumption could take several years, and figuring out when to ramp up production will be difficult. It will also take a significant investment to produce those batteries, so Honda needs to ensure that the market is prepared before pushing ahead.

The company is developing its own solid-state battery program, which the company has discussed with GM, and is working on another with Korean partner LG Energy Solution, a unit of LG Chem Ltd. Meanwhile, the company’s first EVs will be larger, more expensive SUVs, built using GM’s Ultium EV platform, with the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX set to go on sale in 2024.

According to Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst at Guidehouse Insights, Honda needs to get more EVs to market to remain competitive in the US and Europe, as the market is rapidly getting to the point where you need a presence in multiple segments to stay competitive. Mibe is also aware of the challenges posed by the US market, where the charging network isn’t as robust as it needs to be for customers.

He believes that charging infrastructure is a country-level concern that Honda needs to think about as it moves toward achieving its goal of achieving 40% EV sales by 2030. Despite the challenges, Honda is committed to developing EVs and has teamed up with Sony to develop them. The company has also pledged to sell only electrified vehicles by 2040.

Japanese automaker Honda has announced its plans of releasing the electric version of three of its motorbikes. The Honda Cub, Dax, and Zoomer electric bikes will be produced for the Chinese market, according to the company. The bikes are known as Dax e:, Cub e:, and Zoomer e:, respectively.

The three new Honda e-bikes have been specifically developed for the Chinese electric two-wheeler market. The regulatory standards in China relating to e-bikes put a maximum speed of 25km/h. The regulations also cover e-bikes that do not have pedal assist. The three new Honda e-bikes come with telescopic front forks. The Cub e: and Dax e: have rear mono shocks, while the Zoomer e: has twin rear shocks. The Cub e: has drum brakes while the Dax and Zoomer come with rear disc brakes.

The original Honda Cub exemplifies the Honda philosophy of simplicity and reliability. The original Cub was released in 1958 and is arguably the highest-selling motorized vehicle ever built. Honda has sold over 100 million units of the Cub since its debut. The Cub e: comes with 17-inch wheels, round headlights, and a 960Wh removable battery pack. The Honda Cub e has a 400W motor and a riding range of 65km.

The Honda Dax e: bears a semblance to its combustion predecessor. It has a high-rise handlebars design, a boxy body, and a range of 80km, thanks to its 1.1kWh battery. The bike is powered by a 400W motor and comes with a limited top speed of 25km/h. The Zoomer e: has a higher range of 90km on a full charge, although its battery size is unspecified. All three models have a chain-drive system and pedals.

The Cub e:, Dax e:, and Zoomer e: will only be available in China but Honda plans to release up to 10 electric motorbikes in different markets by 2025. Honda is also silent about the presence of battery swapping for the new e-bikes.

Honda may be gradually shifting to sustainable options for its popular outboard motor used in boats. The company has highlighted this shift with the showcase of an electric outboard motor using electric bike batteries. The new Honda electric outboard motor was showcased during the Dusseldorf Motor Show.

The prototype shown in the motor show is a remarkable leap for Honda. The company has straddled the combustible outboard industry with an array of powerful outboard engines. The prototype is a transom-mount electric outboard but the key specs were omitted. The size of the outboard motor indicates that it is meant for small and lightweight electric boats. It is speculated that the electric outboard motor may not exceed 1.5 horsepower. However, the compactness of the Honda prototype may belie its power. These electric motors provide equivalent performance to their combustion counterparts with up to twice the power rating.

The new Honda prototype electric outboard motor was designed to work with Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e batteries. The portable battery pack is being tinkered into a fully swappable system. Gogoro is the leading company in swappable battery technology. The Mobile Power Pack e technology is already being seen in Honda’s electric scooters. There are also a few Honda concept offerings like micro-EVs that feature the Power Pack e battery technology.

The electric boar market is undergoing a quiet revolution with several brands entering the market. The most recent entrant is the Avator 7.5e which is the forerunner of more powerful models to come from Avator. Honda has released three new electric scooters in China. The three models are the electric version of the Dax, Cub, and Zoomer motorbikes. They join a growing collection of sustainability-focused EVs being released by Honda. Honda says the new models target the youthful population.

Honda continues to expand its EV portfolio both in terms of two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The Japanese auto giant has been in the two-wheeler industry for decades but is gradually embracing electric technology. It plans to release ten new electric motorbikes by 2025 although that’s a huge plan. The company has based its new e-scooter lineup on previous gas-powered motorbikes. The pedal-assisted versions of the Honda Dax, Cub, and Zoomer are now in the Chinese market.

The models bear the moniker of their gas-powered siblings. The three electric bikes are the Club e, Dax e, and Zoomer e. The three models have been highly successful small displacement scooters. The three new e-bikes have attractive and unique designs. They also bear some semblance to the S07 and the Muji x Honda e-bike.

The classification category of the new Honda e-bikes in China is Electric Bicycles (EB). Thus, their speeds will be limited to 25km/h. Honda says the new electric bikes will appeal to the needs of Generation Z with their features and design.

The prices of the models, although yet to be released, are expected to be competitive. Their EB categorization also means that the bikes will not need a license for their operation. Since there are restrictions on the age of obtaining a driver’s license, younger riders could use the bike.

There are few technical details known about the three new Honda e-scooters. There are no pricing and global availability details as well.

Honda has announced the 2024 N-Van EV with a range of 200km and a pint-size design. The new vehicle is the electric version of the 2018 gas-powered version of the car. It is a commercial vehicle developed to meet the Kei car requirements. It is a workhorse with a length of about 134 inches and can seat up to four people. The 2024 Honda N-Van EV will be available in Japan.

Honda hopes to debut the N-Van EV in spring 2024 and its compact space is maximized for its battery. The new EV, according to Honda, is versatile and could be deployed for either commercial or personal use.

The pricing of the N-Van also seems highly competitive at 1 million yen (~$7,300). Some of the popular EV minivans like the Mitsubishi eK X and Nissan Sakura are priced from $14,000 up to $17,700.

The 2018 N-Van is powered by a three-cylinder turbocharged engine with up to 64hp power (47kW) and 104Nm torque. Manual and CVT gearboxes are also available for the car, as well as front-wheel or all-wheel drive options.

The N-Van is also a great car that can be used as a camper or a purpose-built hill-climb vehicle. The gas-powered model offers extra cargo space by folding the front passenger seat. The Honda N-Van EV will bear a great semblance to its ICE sibling even in terms of its versatility.

While we expect further developments before 2024, the N-Van EV could also enter overseas markets. These details will become known as the scheduled launch gets closer. Several other specs are lacking for the N-Van EV including its top speed, electric motor, and interior setup.

Honda is pushing to go fully electric in the coming years, and keeping that aim, the company has now announced that it will make and launch a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in 2024.

The auto manufacturer has revealed that it will produce the fuel-cell Honda CR-V model at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, as it plans to go fully electric by 2040 and carbon neutral by 2050.

Fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity for powering the vehicle instead of relying on a battery. It has advantages over battery electric vehicles as the vehicles can be refueled in three to four minutes and travel longer distances before going out of the power supply. But, the technology is not ready for mass adoption, and the public hydrogen stations are concentrated in California in the US.

The upcoming Honda CR-V Hydrogen Fuel-Cell model will come with a plug-in capability for its battery pack to allow it to offer a small amount of electric-only range without having to rely on its hydrogen supply. More details of the car will be revealed sometime closer to its 2024 launch, Honda says. The company didn’t say how many units it plans to build but noted that the factory specializes in small-volume vehicles.

Apart from Honda, Toyota and General Motors have been developing fuel cell technology over the last two decades. Toyota’s Mirai mid-size sedan is heading into its second generation. Honda, which launched its first fuel cell vehicle, the FCX, in 2002 and has invested more than $14 million in California’s hydrogen refueling network.

BMW and Toyota are also teaming up to produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the coming years. By 2024, Bosch plans to invest more than $1 billion globally to develop fuel cell technologies, with over $200 million to build fuel cell stacks for commercial trucks at its South Carolina factory.

Sony and Honda have been working on a new electric vehicle that will feature self driving technology. Now, a new report has revealed an interesting detail regarding this upcoming autonomous EV model and it includes a PlayStation 5.

For those unaware, the two Japanese giants entered into a joint venture earlier this year to bring together their respective technological expertise to create a sustainable automobile. The two firms are set to showcase a deliverable product by 2025 and expect to begin taking orders by the following year. Now, this Sony-Honda collaboration could bring a Level 3 autonomous EV model that might feature a full built in PlayStation 5 gaming console. In other words, this joint venture will use the former’s popular console built into the infotainment system. 

Izumi Kawanishi, President of the Sony Honda Mobility, had stated that putting a PS5 into the upcoming autonomous vehicle is “technologically possible.” Meanwhile, Yasuhide Mizuno, chairman of Sony Honda Mobility, also said that the company aims to “develop a car as hardware that will cater to the entertainment and network we would like to offer.” With the joint venture the veteran automobile maker Honda would leverage the technological expertise of Sony to create an autonomous electric vehicle that is set to launch in the US market soon.

So, the new EV will be built with Honda’s mechanicals while Sony would be responsible for the electronics. This would include integrated sensors and technology that is crucial for the self driving technology. The joint venture would likely take on the likes of Tesla in the electric vehicle market. It’s been quite some time since Sony launched its latest generation of PlayStation gaming console — Sony PS5. In fact, the company is gearing up to launch a new slimmer version next year.

Amid rumors of a new version of PS5 getting launched, it is being said that Sony, in partnership with Honda, could end up using the PlayStation 5 in the upcoming smart cars for the entertainment console.

Izumi Kawanishi, President of Sony Honda Mobility, which was established in September, has said that it is technically possible to integrate PlayStation 5 platform in their cars. However, he has not provided more information about this integration or if they have actually tried doing it.

He says that the companies plan to use music, movies, and gaming to build electric cars built around a premium entertainment experience. He further added that “Sony has content, services, and entertainment technologies that move people. We are adapting these assets to mobility, and this is our strength against Tesla.”

Kawanishi says that Tesla isn’t providing any content services, which could mean that the company is planning to focus more on the entertainment part for the upcoming cars.

Honda has unveiled its first electric moped in Europe, the Honda EM1. The new Honda electric moped was showcased during the EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show.

The Honda EM1 is expected to enter the European market next summer, according to the company. The two-wheeler is fully named as Honda Electric Moped and it is the first of ten new electric motorbikes that Honda promised to release by 2025. The new electric moped will have the Honda Mobile Power Pack battery. The EM1 is also expected to have a range of not less than 40km on a single charge.

In terms of external features, the Honda EM1 which is currently being showcased at the Honda booth looks appealing. It has a rear hub motor and a seat that could accommodate the rider and a passenger. There are pillion pegs and a rear rack that could be useful for carrying cargo. Honda may be using the EM1 to target younger riders but pricing information is lacking at this time.

The use of a single Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP) battery means that the moped may not be very powerful. The maximum range of 40km is expected to be achieved at low speeds for the scooter and it could get a top speed of 45km/h. The Honda EM1 is therefore likely to be classified as an L1e-B moped in Europe. Honda has kept much of the details about the EM1 under wraps, as well as its pricing information. It is also not clear whether Honda will also introduce its battery-swap technology in the EM1 to expand its range. That will however require the setting up of charging stations across the continent.

Automobile giant Honda Motors will introduce a three-wheeled electric scooter into the market by Q4, 2022. This is following the formation of Striemo Inc., an arm of Honda’s Ignition Initiative. The Honda Striemo electric scooter is a micro-mobility EV with some unique features.

The unusual addition of a third wheel to the standing electric scooter offers it greater balance. Stability is enhanced with a sturdy frame and technology that supports such balance even at top speeds. The self-balancing mechanism, according to Honda, is a vital element of the scooter’s structure. The Striemo has a top speed of 25km/h and a range of 30km on a single charge.

Striemo Inc. is focused on providing unique experiences and discoveries with its product offerings. Striemo Inc.’s CEO, Yotaro Mori says that the new e-scooter provides a unique means of transportation. It allows anyone to go out with spontaneity and fun. Mori hopes to pursue a vigorous drive that will place Striemo as one of the commonly used e-scooters. It hopes to achieve greater penetration of the company’s mobility products starting from Japan.

The Striemo will debut in Japan by the end of the year while other markets will follow subsequently. There are no details yet on the pricing information and full specs of the Striemo. We expect these details to start trickling in as we approach the launch.

Honda is entering the EV scooter segment with its all-new Honda Activa E. In an interview with ET Auto, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India President, Atsushi Ogata, confirmed an HMSI EV product debut in the country. But the lunch is not expected in India until 2023.

The electric scooter is said to come with battery swapping technology, which will be a convenient option for buyers to replace a discharged battery with a charged battery at swap stations and to charge the battery at home. Consumers will have two options: they will be able to swap their dead batteries with charged ones through either a subscription model or a nominal fee or the user can also buy back up a battery pack that can be charged and replaced when the installed one gets discharged.

Earlier this year, Bounce also launched the Bounce Infinity E1 electric scooter which became India’s first swappable battery electric scooter. The company has also introduced a similar subscription-based battery swapping system dubbed ‘battery as a service.’

In that accord, the upcoming Honda Activa E will be a direct competitor to the Bounce Infinity E1 along with other major electric scooters in India like the Ola S1, Bajaj Chetak, Ather 450X, and Hero Electric scooters.

This may also prove to be the right time to enter the EV market for Honda as battery prices are coming down and central and state governments announced incentives to encourage a faster transition to e-mobility, industry stakeholders also said that the potential of conversion is high as this time as 21 million two-wheelers were sold before the outbreak of the pandemic in FY19.

Honda’s previous partner Hero is also set to release its new EV scooter next month, introducing more competition in the developing Indian EV market.

A widespread glitch has been reported by several Honda car owners relating to the clocks and calendar of their cars being stuck in 2002. These complaints have flooded some of the carmaker’s platforms. Several persons have complained that the clocks and calendars in their vehicles are stuck in the year 2002. These complaints are coming from persons in the US, Canada, and the UK.

The issue seems connected with Honda and Acura models with GPS navigation systems manufactured between 2004 and 2012. There seems to be no solution to the issue for now, as the clock automatically resets to January 1, 2002, each time the car starts, even after correcting it manually previously. This is an issue that has been there since manufacture but is now coming to the fore. The two years, 2002 and 2022 look similar, and the glitch could be connected to shoddy coding.

An official from Honda indicates that the company is aware of the issue and is investigating it to determine possible countermeasures to resolve the problem.

This is the third time Honda car owners have run into the clock resetting issue. In 2017, Honda and Acura models from 1999 to 2004 with navigation systems had their clocks reset to 1998. The issue resurfaced again in 2021. In both instances, the clocks went back exactly 1,024 weeks.

A proximate cause of the malfunction is loose coding around the rollover of the GPS clock system in the Honda and Acura models that were affected. A single GPS epoch has 1023 weeks (just under 20 years), with the system rolling over on week 1,024.

The first GPS systems started counting time in 1980, and they have rolled over twice – in 1999 and 2019. Thy system must therefore take care of rollovers to prevent the looping issue.

Honda has included a canopy to provide some degree of protection against the elements, in its latest e-scooter. Aptly termed the Honda Gyro Canopy:e, the new Honda e-scooter is coming on the heels of an intensive production spree of e-bike models by the Japanese automaker. It joins a growing list of impressive and innovative designs that are coming out of the company.

The Honda Gyro Canopy:e is a delivery-focused e-scooter and the added canopy gives the rider as well as the cargo although it lacks a sealed cargo box, and one could still be wet while driving in the rain. It however provides a shield against the wind and rain that may affect visibility via the windscreen of the e-scooter. The Gyro Canopy:e has a 3,200W peak output-rated electric motor although it offers 580W of continuous power output. It has a range of 77 km which could be higher when riding at average speeds greater than 30 km/h. It has removable and swappable batteries, further extending the capability of the e-scooter. The batteries can be swapped seamlessly in a matter of minutes for freshly charged ones.

The Honda Gyro Canopy:e is suited for urban riding as a delivery e-bike. It has just been launched in Honda’s home market of Japan with a 715,000 Yen ($6,295) price tag. The price of the Gyro Canopy:e is substantially higher than Honda’s recent lineup of e-bikes like the U-GO and U-BE. The Gyro Canopy:e is however made for commercial operations, unlike the U-go and U-be.

It remains to be seen how the Honda Gyro Canopy:e is received in the Japanese market. Global availability and pricing details are yet to be released by Honda at this time.

For the first time ever, cars from Honda will be featuring Google‘s Android Automotive software. So, it seems that Google has managed to bring in another major automobile manufacturer on board for its new operating system for cars.

Now, Honda will begin launching cars that arrive with Google’s embedded Android Automotive OS, which also features the Google voice assistant. Other notable features include the Google Maps among other infotainment based systems and other Automotive approved Android applications. The first vehicles from the Japanese carmaker to feature the Android Automotive will roll out next year. Although, the company has yet to reveal which models will feature this system first.

A Honda spokesperson revealed (Via TheVerge) that “We will collaborate with Google to better integrate Google in vehicle services in our vehicles including the ability to more easily use features like Google Assistant, Google Maps functionality and other in-vehicle apps offered through Google Play.” Keep in mind that Android Automotive is different from Android Auto. The latter is a system that is projected from a paired smartphone rather than being a separate infotainment system altogether like the former.

At the moment, only cars are available with this embedded Android Automotive, namely the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. However, Google has made deals with other notable players in the automobile industry like Ford, General Motors, and more, which should result in millions of vehicles in the future featuring this system as their default operating system.

Honda Motors‘ US unit has just revealed that it is targeting initial annual sales of 70,000 units for its Prologue series of electric utility vehicle that is set to launch in the American market in 2024.

According to a Reuters report, the Japanese automobile giant is planning on adding an additional electric vehicle model as it seeks to sell a total of 500,000 electric vehicles in the United States by the year 2030. Furthermore, it also aims on reaching 100 percent zero emission vehicles sales in North America by 2040. The news arrives as US President Joe Biden signed an executive order last month that set a target to make half of all new passenger vehicles sold in 2030 to be zero emission vehicles.

Notably, Honda Prologue series is being co developed with General Motors Co and is based on the Ultium platform, which is a modular platform and battery system. Additionally, both companies are also joining hands to develop an electric Acura brand SUV. GM will be responsible for assembling the new Prologue and Acura SUV, both of which are set to launch in 2024. However, Honda has yet to reveal which plant will build the new electric vehicles.

Dave Gardner, executive vice president of national operations at American Honda Motor Co stated that the company will initially aim on Prologue sales in California and other states like Texas and Florida. He further added that “Our strategy is focused on introducing a higher percentage of hybrids in core models in the near term, making a committed effort to achieve higher volume leading to the introduction of our Honda Prologue.”

Japanese automobile and motorbike giant Honda is making significant inroads into the two-wheeler EV market with its recent products. The Chinese arm of Honda, called Wuyang-Honda has added a new electric scooter to its lineup dubbed U-GO Electric Scooter in the Chinese market.

The U-GO e-scooter comes in two models that are ultra-affordable and purely designed for the urban commute. The two models both reflect a minimalist design and simple features. The standard model has a 1.2kW continuous-rated hub motor with a peak rating of 1.8kW, and a top speed of 53km/h. The second model has a lower power rating of 0.8kW while the top speed peaks at 43km/h.

Both models come with a removable Lithium-ion battery having a maximum capacity of 1.44kW. This can be doubled when it is upgraded to the bigger battery pack. Both models have an under-seat carriage with a capacity of 26L.

The new Honda U-GO electric scooter is presently available in China at a starting price of CNY 7,499 ($1,150) while the standard version with a 1.2kW rating is priced at CNY 7,999 ($1,233). The prices are on the low end of the spectrum. Some of the Chinese models are more than twice as expensive as the U-GO e-scooter.

The e-scooter market is booming in China and India, owing partly to the favourable and incentive-filled business climate in these two countries. We expect Honda to launch the new e-scooters in India at some point. We cannot also rule out future expansion into the lucrative US and European markets.

China’s leading autonomous driving technology provider AutoX has announced a partnership with Honda China to deploy Honda cars fitted with AutoX’s autonomous vehicle technology for testing on public roads in China. In a press release, the company disclosed that Honda China will provide two of its models, the Honda Accord and Inspire vehicles, to deploy AV technology and testing in some of China’s most populous cities.

AutoX runs the Robotaxi service (with a fleet of about 100 vehicles) across some of China’s leading cities after successfully testing the Level 4 autonomous vehicles in China last year. AutoX’s AI self-driving platform is highly developed and can handle the densest and most dynamic traffic systems, having pioneered the Level 4 AV Robotaxis. AutoX’s mission is to provide autonomous transportation solutions to a broader segment of the population using its self-driving technology, which it terms democratizing autonomy.

Honda will bring its automotive expertise to the partnership as it hopes to deepen its understanding of the Chinese traffic ecosystem, establish acceptance and safety of the self-driving technology, and explore new autonomous technology solutions to tackle road traffic accidents. Honda’s SENSING technology was deployed in China in 2015 and has proved effective in reducing road crashes from SENSING-enabled vehicles. Last month, Honda began industrial production of Level 3 AVs in Japan and would seek to draw from Level 4 tech available from AutoX for subsequent AV development.

The success of the testing process for the cars will determine the direction of the partnership between Honda and AutoX. A successful testing regime across public roads in China’s most densely populated cities could see mass production of such vehicles for the Chinese market. But this could take a few years to come to fruition.
