Early this month, Huawei released a bunch of new consumer devices including smart wearables, earbuds, tablets, laptops, and flagship phones. Most of them are amazingly decent with upgraded performance or design. Well, our team’s favorite out of all of these is this new tablet, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5 S. To be honest, I didn’t expect too much on this tablet, as we’ve reviewed the most powerful model of this lineup last year, which is the MatePad Pro 13.2. I thought well, that’s good, another MatePad, not that ‘Pro’ but in a more portable size at more affordable pricing.

However, after I used it for over 2 weeks, I have to say it is even more ‘Pro’ as a productive tablet powered by Harmony OS. No matter for painting, note taking, or even video editing, it works well. And, of course, I’m talking about the experience with the brand-new M Pencil and the keyboard powered by Nearlink connection. They just seamlessly bring the tablet up to another level.

Hot in Chinese Market

This new MatePad is likely to be the most cost-effective HUAWEI tablet. The market response in China also proves this. It has gone crazy in the Chinese Market and sold out on the very first day it was launched. So now let’s check out why it got so popular.

PaperMatte Display

The first thing I want to share is about the PaperMatte display, which makes it the number-one tablet for my painting and stylus note-taking. It’s an 11.5-inch LCD panel with adaptive refresh rates of up to 144Hz. The true magic comes in the new PaperMatte processing of the protective glass. While this is nothing new, what surprised us was the visual and stylus effect it brought. Some might argue that it is just something that can be fixed by covering a matte protective film. However, the fact is that almost all protective films are just compromises. They often bring issues of worse colors, brightness, and resolution, along with stylus malfunction.

But look at this PaperMatte display. The stylus writing falls smoothly on the nib and fits perfectly. It does this with fine anti-glare while providing vivid colors and decent clarity at various angles. The matte finish is dedicated. When you touch the panel, it doesn’t give an odd touch, on the contrary, it supports various gesture swipes smoothly but leaves almost no fingerprints.

As its name “PaperMatte” implies, it’s like physical paper, except it’s harder. You can even hear the rustle of the stylus sliding on the display. that’s just so similar to the paper experience. I’m sure you hate seeing fingerprints and stains on a drawing tablet. The new MatePad just fixed it well by covering a hydrophobic and oil-resistant coating.

For the rest of the screen, you can check out the info here. The only drawback is that it has no ultra-high brightness and contrast like those OLED screens.

Design

As for the size and design, the whole metal body has great build quality and weight control. That’s also one of the reasons why I enjoy taking it on my business trips. The 11-inch size here is just right, larger than an iPad mini but fitting easily in my satchel.

Performance Powered By Kirin 9000WL

Before I move to the note-taking and drawing part, I need to relax you a bit over its performance. Although we have no firmly correct information about the chipset running inside, it’s pretty sure that the same Kirin 9000s (exact model: Kirin 9000WL) is running inside as what we have on the new Pura 70 Ultra. But of course, the CPU strategy might be varied a bit. But if you guys are still concerned about its performance, I would say that its actual power is at the level between Snapdragon 865 and 888. For daily use, thanks to the New Harmony OS, the great smoothness might make you ignore its performance.

As for note-taking, I strongly recommend you guys try out the official app – HUAWEI Notes. On this MatePad, you have two official note-taking apps for options, the other is called HUAWEI NotePad. But obviously, the Huawei Notes has more features. For personalizing, you can customize each notebook with various coveries and paper patterns there, also including changing paper ratio and colors. The writing is optimized with the latest M pencil.

And as a note-taking tool, it has a built-in recording feature, which is not separate from note-taking. For example, assume you have a lecture while taking notes. Turn on the recorder, and your handwriting will also be recorded with the timeline. So when you get ready to review the recording, you can immediately locate the important parts in both your notes and the recording.

Apart from that, you are also allowed to move any part of the note with the circling tool, copy and share, change its size and color, or convert it to text.

Drawing & Sketching in HUAWEI GoPaint

Now let’s check out what it offers for sketching and painting. To be honest, none of those tablets could compare to the iPad for drawing, until the new MatePad. I doesn’t mean the gap in hardware is huge. Actually, now it’s pretty small, as some brands have styluses with great latency performance and stable connections. It’s just because few painting apps were ready to fit well the none-iPad tablets! So HUAWEI’s solution is to create a brand-new one for their own tablets, and, it’s free. The app is GoPaint, now only available for the latest MatePads. It’s also one of the most versatile sketching apps I found in the non-iOS system.

The app can support up to 320 layers for creation, even at 4k resolution, you can still have 66 layers. It offers quite a lot of canvas options and even supports customizing. There are over 100 brush patterns including oil painting, inking and so on. Most of these brushes have been very satisfying to me. While I used only about 10 of them, the pressure feedback, the latency, and the smoothness of the strokes were almost perfect. But there are still some special patterns that are stiff and offer no significant pressure feedback. But since I’m not good at drawing with them, I’m not sure if it’s the proper setup for those special artists.

What impressed me the most was its natural wandering through the inking brushes. Very few painting apps can simulate this kind of natural inking. The art creation is very flexible, you can adjust the shape of the selection at will, modify the color preference of layers, applying various effects such as ‘blur’ and ‘liquefy’. Anyway, I think it’s pretty friendly even for those who do not draw a lot. And you can also find quite a lot of useful tutorials inside the app. The whole app seems to keep emphasizing that Huawei is serious about developing painting and Sketching on their tablet.

You may have sensed my excitement in my review. The reason why I’m so excited is that: if you want a drawing tablet, now why should it be a more expensive iPad? The discussion within some brands is probably still stuck in the entertainment scenario for tablets, and then just spending the cost on hardware could be a less risky option. But I’d love to see one of them start to bring about an expansion of the scene through hardware and software collaboration. And that will lead to a new round of competition, which is absolutely a good thing for users.

Stylus & Keyboard

I haven’t tested the companion NearLink-powered M-pencil in depth yet. Since we had a really good experience with the MatePad Pro last time, I just decided to dive right into daily use. No surprises, it’s as stable and good as ever. The slow-motion comparison between the MatePad and new iPad Air is showcased in the review video. Please check it out if you are interested.

There’s also a keyboard accessory for the new MatePad. The typing is pretty good but it’s nothing special. So I’ll leave it at that. By the way, for officing, I strongly recommend you guys try the WPS Office, which is much user friendly for tablet officing than Microsoft’s.

Battery & Charge

Alright, the last part I want to share with you is the battery. Honestly, the battery is not very impressive, as the tablet uses an LCD panel, it seems that the battery life is a bit more struggle than others with an OLED one. But probably it’s because I was painting a lot in the GoPaint app, the battery dropped a bit faster than I expected. And the included charger only supports up to 22.5W power output, so that might be something you need to be aware of. It’s not really fast.

Video Editing in HUAWEI’s Petal Clip and CapCut/JianYing

In addition to the creative scenarios mentioned above, I also tried editing videos with it, and the tools that satisfied me were HUAWEI’s Petal Clip and CapCut powered by ByteDance. And for those who are interested, CapCut is about to release a Pro version. Or if you can read Chinese, you can also try out its Chinese version, Jianying, which has a lot of premium editing and AI features.

(Please check out the speaker sound of MatePad 11.5 S (vs iPad Air 2024) in our review video.

Verdict

Anyway, the MatePad 11.5 S is still my favorite electronic device for the past month. I’m sure it’s more than enough to fill that gap in the market. If you need a non-iPad to create on, it seems to be the best way to go! More importantly, it’s likely to have a reasonable price tag. I’m not sure how much it will sell for in different markets, but it’s a safe bet that it should be a strong contender for the best affordable tablet this year.

The latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) has revealed that although the fourth quarter of 2021 saw a decline in shipments of tablets by 11.9% when compared to Q4 2020, total shipments grew by 3.2% when accounted for the whole year.

So let’s take a look at the shipment numbers of top tablet and Chromebook manufacturers to figure out who came out on top in 2021.

Apple remains dominant in the tablet market with its iPad offerings. The Cupertino giant retains the top spot with 57.8 million units shipped in 2021. The brand enjoyed a 34.2% market share and experienced an 8.4% yearly growth. Apple also shipped the most tablets in Q4 2021 at 17.5 million, however, the brand experienced an 8.6% decline in shipments when compared to Q4 of 2020.

In the second spot, we have Samsung with 30.9 million tablet shipments in 2021. The South Korean giant commanded an 18.3% market share and enjoyed a 3.8% yearly growth in the tablet segment. Samsung shipped 7.3 million tablets in Q4 2021 which was a 21.6% decline compared to Q4 2020.

Lenovo came in third with 17.7 million tablets shipments in 2021, which amounted to a 19.2% yearly growth compared to 2020. The company shipped 4.6 million tablets in the last quarter of 2021 which was 1.6 million sell than the volume shipped by the brand in Q4 of 2020.

Amazon shipped 16.1 million Fire Tablets in 2021 giving it the fourth-largest tablet market share at 9.5%. The brand grew 15.1% compared to 2020 and even enjoyed a positive growth of 1.3% in Q4 shippings year-on-year.

On the fifth position, we have Huawei and Honor who suffered a 32.1% decline in shipments at 9.7 million units shipped in 2021. However, the initial decline in shipping volume somewhat stabilized in Q4 of 2021, with the brand shipping 2.5 million tablets compared to 2.9 million shipments in Q4 2020.

The sharp decrease in the yearly shipping numbers is most likely due to the recent sanctions by the U.S. which prevents the brand from doing business with any American companies like Qualcomm and even Taiwan’s TSMC, which is the leading contract manufacturer for chipsets in the world.

Despite the market moving past its peak demand for tablets, senior research analyst Anutoopa Nataraj has stated that the shipments will remain above pre-pandemic levels as virtual learning, remote work, and media consumption remain priorities for users.

According to a DigiTimes report, Huawei, Samsung, and Apple are the top 3 tablet brands in the world. Although, unlike Samsung and Apple, Huawei primarily ships its tablets only in China, Europe, and other Southeast Asian markets, with nearly 60 percent of the volumes going to China with only 40 percent going to other regions like Europe and Asia.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi K30S for 2,299 Yuan (~$343) brings 144Hz display, SD865, 64MP triple cameras, and 5,000mAh battery

The issues Huawei is facing has also prompted other tablet makers to start taking advantage of the situation, eating away at the Chinese tech giant’s market share in its home country. At the moment, Apple has a 42 percent market share in China’s tablet market, while Huawei holds 33 percent, and Microsoft and Lenovo with 3.5 and 3 percent respectively.

The report estimates that Huawei has inventory left that would last until the second quarter of 2021. The company has yet to acquire CPUs from Intel and AMD, so the future also remains uncertain right now. Furthermore, the Chinese brand will be focusing on the China market and will cut output for overseas markets. As per estimations, the company is expected to lose 22 percent of its market share next year, while Apple’s is projected to rise to 46.4 percent, Microsoft to 4 percent, and Lenovo to 9.6 percent.

The Huawei Mediapad M3 was a high-end tablet powered by a Kirin 950 chip, so there is nothing to suggest this could be the next generation Mediapad M4. We had reported a couple of days back that the Chinese smartphone giant was planning to release the Huawei P9 Lite as the Huawei G9. And today, the company has confirmed the details to some extent.

Huawei has just announced that it will release a new Huawei G9 smartphone tomorrow. The company even released a teaser image for the launch, wherein we can can see the back of the device. And from the image, the G9 will sport a very similar design as the Huawei P9 series. However, like expected the phone will not come with a dual camera setup, instead we can see just a single rear camera on board. The image also confirms that there will be three colors available for the device, namely white, black and gold. Just by the teaser, it’s hard to say whether the Huawei G9 comes with a plastic body, but recently the phone had passed through TENAA, which confirmed the plastic back on the device.

Along with the mid-range Huawei G9, we can also expect a new tablet from the smartphone maker. For now, we only know that the tab will be of 7-inches, but expect more details after tomorrow’s launch event.

Thanks to the TENAA listing, we know that the phone will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p diplay with an octa-core chip inside which should most likely be the Kirin 650. In case you missed, I have detailed all the important features of the new Kirin 650 chip here, so make sure you check that out. Other specs of the phone include, 3GB of RAM, 2900mAh battery, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front shooter and Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS on board.

Pricing is also supposed to be decent according to Huawei’s standard. The Huawei G9 Standard Edition is expected to retail at 1688 Yuan ($261) while the high-end G9 should go for 1988 Yuan ($307).

So, what do you think about the Huawei G9?

The teaser reveals that the upcoming Huawei product will be targeted at business users. And thanks to the previous leaks, we may know what product to expect at the event next week.

Huawei could release the long rumored Huawei Matebook laptop hybrid at MWC 2016. The laptop is expected to be customized for business users and hence, the words on the teaser “The new style of business” kind of hints at this product launch. Moreover, the teaser confirms a stylus for the product, which once again the Matebook hybrid was rumored to come with. Seeing all these hints, it’s quite likely that the company will announce the Matebook laptop at the event.

The hybrid laptop is said to feature a 12.9-inch detachable display and will run on Windows 10 platform. In fact, we have compiled a detailed feature list of the Matebook laptop in our previous article, which you can check out from here. The new product will be launched on February 21 at 2 pm.

Although Huawei’s Matebook hybrid laptop is our pick at the event, the company may also unveil the rumored Huawei P9 flagship there. We have been hearing a lot about this upcoming smartphone in the past few weeks, and it’s possible that the device is launched ahead of schedule. The phone is rumored to feature pretty high-end specs, like Kirin 955 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 5.2-inch FHD 1080p display, 4GB RAM and $450 price tag.

Since it’s confirmed that Huawei will announce a new business oriented product at MWC 2016, we hope to see more information in the coming days. So, stay tuned.

Judging from the design, we expected it to be a new Huawei tablet probably the Honor X3 tablet. Now, a couple of renders of the new tablet have surfaced online, further adding to the possibility that Huawei will show off this device at CES 2016.

According to the source who leaked these images, the tablet will have the model number DR-A01L and will feature a slim body with the measurements, 240 × 173 × 7.4mm. The tab will reportedly come with a large 10.1-inch display with 16:10 aspect ratio. There are rear and front cameras and virtual keys as well. It’s also said that the tablet will feature a front mounted fingerprint sensor. Further, like you saw in the teaser image, these renders also come with four speakers, two on each side.

As for the specifications, it is said that the new tablet will feature Kirin 935 octa-core chip instead of the new Kirin 950. Other than this, we don’t have any other information about the specifications of the device.

The source further states that Huawei will not launch any D series, M-series and P series devices at CES 2016. So, this new tablet could be the center of attraction for Huawei at the event.

Well, the company will announce the device later today in Las Vegas, where we will get more details.

While Huawei announces it major flagships like the Huawei P8 with a lot of fanfare, earlier today, the company released its new Huawei M2 tablet in a conference at Beijing International Art Academy. The device is the next generation model of the Mediapad M1 tablet which was announced back in 2014. However, the company has incorporated a lot of new changes in terms of its design, specs as well as sound quality.

The Huawei M2 tablet is made out of 99.5% metal body. So, all metal lovers will definitely dig the new design. Moreover, the metal bezels on the side are slim, making the display stand out when the screen is off. But when you turn on the display, you can see black borders on the sides of the display. The overall body looks quite solid and measure just 7.8mm in thickness. This makes it a pretty slim tablet. The company also claims that the M2 comes with dual antenna design, which ensures good signal quality at all times.

Coming to the actual specs, the Huawei M2 tablet features the company’s current Kirin 930 octa-core chipset with Cortex A53e cores. There will be 3GB of RAM on board, which is more than enough to multitask. Further, you get 16GB and 64Gb internal storage options along with an 8MP rear + 5MP front facing camera. The 8-inch display will sport a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels.

If you compare these specs with the old M1 tablet, its a huge upgrade. Huawei Mediapad M1 just had 1GB of RAM and a crappy 5MP camera. So, the new M2 improves greatly on the old generation model. However, it features the same 4800mAh battery as found on the M1.

As for the software, the Huawei M2 tablet runs on EMUI 3.0 based on Android 5.0 lollipop version. The UI comes with nifty features such as split screen multitasking, magazine view etc.

One of the highlights of the new tablet are its speakers. The company has incorporated dual 1W speakers (13mm x 18mm) in particularly large sound chamber design boosting the overall sound output. The company claims that these speakers make sure that both the sound output and the bass are loud. Also, inside, you have the Harmon Kardon Clari-Fi sound technology, the same one which we saw on the HTC One M8 flagship. This tech reportedly restores the original rich quality of compressed audio files.

As for the pricing, the Huawei M2 Tablet 16GB Wi-Fi only version will be up for grabs after July 16 for 1588 Yuan. If you want the 64GB Wi-Fi version, you will have to shell out 1888 Yuan. The LTE model starts at 1888 Yuan (16GB) and goes up to 2288 Yuan (64GB).

So, what do you think about this new Huawei M2 tablet? Any takers?

Huawei just released two teaser images with the title “NEXT IS HERE”. Now, we can take a guess of what the company means by NEXT in this image. Huawei had recently confirmed that the company was planning to release a Huawei smartwatch this year. We expected it to be sometime later in 2015, however looks like we may be able to see the device as early as MWC 2015.

In the teaser image, you can see a crescent shape with a star at the end. While the image fails to explain what it means, we think it could be hinting at a curved Huawei smartwatch. We have already seen Samsung’s Gear S watch with a curved screen and Huawei’s smartwatch too could feature something like that. The next here could mean the next version of its Huawei smartband released last year, and what better upgrade than a new smartwatch!

The second image could be for the next device which is due for an update. The Huawei X1 tablet! So, this year at MWC 2015, we could be seeing the next generation model of the Huawei tablet, the all new Huawei Mediapad X2. According to recent leaks, the device is said to come with a 7-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution display, Huawei Hisilicon Kirin 925 processor with 3GB RAM and 5500 mAh battery. The price is said to be around 1999 Yuan which comes to $320.

Another important information revealed is the presence of 4G LTE. Yes, the image has the ‘4G LTE’ words on the top left corner which possibly means that the watch could be a stand alone device, with support for the high speed 4G LTE networks. This would really take things to the next level. However, we hope that battery is big enough to support such high speed connections which consumes a lot of power. The second image too has the 4G LTE logo which means the tablet phone will support this network.

So could Huawei really “Make It Possible”? We still haven’t found the perfect smartwatch which is a blend of the best design, features, battery as well as affordability. We know Huawei has the ability as well as resources to unveil a great smartwatch and we do hope to see something different and better than current offerings in the market.

MWC 2015 is just a few days away, so stay tuned for more information.

Meanwhile, can you think of what the crescent shape and the star as well as the shape in the second image mean?

Huawei Honor X1 was one of the better 7-inch phablets out there in the market. Now, the second generation model named Huawei Honor X2 has been leaked online. Huawei will reportedly launch the device at the upcoming CES 2015. So, you’ll get to see the next generation model within a year of launch of the X1 phablet, which was announced back at MWC in February.

These pictures were earlier leaked by a website called nowhereelse.fr claiming to be the next Huawei Ascend P8. However, as you can see, the device in the pictures is too big to be the rumored 5.2-inch P8. In fact, they reveal a much bigger form factor, somewhere around 7-inches, which is exactly what this latest leak claims it to be i.e. the new Honor X2.

From what we can see in the pictures, the Honor X2 looks like a great device. The tablet will come with a full metal body. As you can see in the pictures leaked, the back metal panel has a smooth finish, but given that this is just a component of the device, the final product will have some kind of coating over this back plate. The power button, volume rocker keys, MicroSIM slot as well as the MicroSD card slot are located on one side of the device. This isn’t surprising given that the current generation Honor X1 features all these slots/ buttons on one side too. The corners are less rounded than the earlier model, making it look like a true tablet instead of a phone. But the rest of the designs remains somewhat similar to the Honor X1.

The leak also provides us with some specs. The Honor X2 tablet phone is expected to come with the same Kirin 925 processor that we saw in recent releases. There will be 3GB RAM inside. The 7-inch display on the front comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The Huawei Honor X2 tablet is a phone in the body of a tablet, so you can do regular smartphone stuff on the large screen like calling, messaging etc. The device will be unveiled at CES 2015, which is just a few days away and will reportedly retail for a price tag of 1999 Yuan, which comes to around $320.

We still don’t know many of the phone’s features like the camera, battery, internal storage or even the measurements, but given that it will be announced at CES 2015, we don’t have to wait too long for the info.

So, what do you think about this upcoming phone tablet?

Huawei is becoming the popular manufacturer since this Chinese based company built few nice and high-quality product for global market, and now the foreign website (AndroidPolice) has been doing some evaluation to the Huwei MediaPad 7 Lite.

The Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite has 7-inch screen with 1024×600 IPS display, powered by 1.4GHz single-core Cortex-A8 processor, sports with 1GB of RAM and 8GB on-board storage, microSD card slot with support for up to 32GB, equipped with 3.2MP rear camera shooter, and VGA front-facing camera.

The MediaPad 7 Lite has 4,100mAh battery capacity while the connectivity are Wi-Fi, 3G (GSM), Buetooth. And the dimensions & Weight is 193mm x 120mm x 11mm, 370 grams, running Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich), unfortunatelly we don’t have any exact price and availability of this tablet.

Pros :

It’s solid. From front to back and all around, this tablet feels great. It’s well made and everything about it just feels good.

Beautifully crafted. Not only does it feel good, but it looks good, too. I really love the look of the matte aluminum next to the white plastic. It’s classy.

Very minor OS modifications. There’s a nifty little button that hides the notification bar for a full-screen experience, and that’s the extent of Huawei’s softmods. I dig.

Cons :

It feels bulky for a 7″ slate. While it’s only a tiny bit thicker than the Nexus 7, it feels substantially thicker in the hand.

The device orientation just doesn’t feel right. 7″ tablets shouldn’t be designed for landscape-specific use.

Confusing orientation. The branding on the back suggests portrait, yet the software and volume rockers are laid out otherwise.

Piss-poor performance. Popular games like Dead Trigger are basically unplayable, the launcher is choppy, and overall performance is just bad.

Awful battery life. Good luck getting a day out of it – regardless of whether you use it or not.

The screen is crap. There is no excuse for putting a 1024×600 display in a tablet at all. None. On top of that, it smears easily and is impossible to keep clean. Distractingly so.

ICS. Not that ICS is bad, just that Jelly Bean is better. A lot better. Especially on a 7″ slate.

Scrolling is always choppy, even in something as simple as an RSS reader.

The keyboard makes no sense. The toggle for the number pad is on the right side, but to toggle back to the letter pad, the button’s on the left.

No NFC. Every Android device should ship with NFC at this point.
