       Here we have three cellphones from Huawei: the Huawei Honor 6, Huawei Mate 7, and the Huawei Honor 6 Extreme Edition. These three phones were just launched this year and are all aimed at the high-end market. Their processors are from Huawei’s own Kirin series: Kirin 920, Kirin 925, Kirin 928 respectively. How do they compare to each other? Let’s find out.

First, let’s start by describing the differences between their processors.

Kirin 920: It’s built on the the octa-core big.LITTLE GTS (Global Task Scheduling). It integrates four 1.7GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processors and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 processors into one using 28nm technology. It also boasts an I3 smart sensor processor that can lower power consumption, and let’s features like a gyroscope and accelerator run even when the phone is on standby. The Kirin 920 also comes with Huawei’s LTE Advanced communication module which supports the LTE Cat6 standard as well as TD-LTE, LTE-FDD, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, GSM, etc. Its GPU is the ARM Mali T628MP4 which supports H.265 and 4K videos.

Kirin 925: This is not that much of an upgrade from the Kirin 920, except that its frequency has increased to 1.8Ghz. Also, some smaller improvements were made such as adding the TrustZone which can protect the chip for the fingerprint scanner.

Kirin 928: The frequency has been upgraded to 2.0GHz.

Huawei Honor 6 benchmark

        Above are the Antutu and Vellamo benchmark scores for the Huawei Honor 6. It received a 38101 in the Antutu benchmark test which is pretty high.

Huawei Mate 7      

       These are the benchmark scores for the Huawei Mate 7. It received a 42804 score in the Antutu test. Although the Kirin 925 isn’t the strongest of the three processors, this phone still has powerful specs, so it is no surprise that it has a high score.

Honor 6 Extreme Edition 

Here are the scores for the Huawei Honor 6 Extreme Edition. It scored 42576 in the Antutu test.

Analysis 

       Why does the Kirin Mate 7 have a higher score than the Huawei Honor 6 Supreme Edition even though it uses the Kirin 925? First, because as a series, the difference between the two of them is not that great. Second, the Huawei Mate 7 is a high-end product, so it should definitely have the edge in other parameters.

The Kirin 920 is HiSilicon’s newest smartphone SOC and has scored 38000 in the Antutu benchmark test.

Here is our tear-down HiSilicon’s latest chipset.

The chip is enclosed in a glass case, so I decided to just use a saw to get it out.

The CPU is made of quad-core Cortex A15 and uses a 2M L2 cache. It is 20mm2. The green parts are four A15 cores. The yellow one is the L1 cache. The purple part is the 2MB L2 cache. (Of course, these are not their real colors)

Its GPU is the Mali T628 (624) MP4. You can see four cores there. The orange parts are the register set and cache.

Its baseband is an LTE modem from Balong.

Overall, the Kirin 920 is a 28nm processor. The size of this processor is roughly the same the S800. Its CPU’s size is also close to the 4A15. The Mali GPU, though, is larger than the Adreno and PVR 5 series, and is smaller than Apple’s PVR GR6430.

Of course, just because there’s a direct relationship between the size of the chipset and capital does not mean that the smaller it is, the weaker the performance is.

Recently, Weibo user, @包子玩机 posted a picture revealing details about the MX4 Pro. According to the picture, the MX4 Pro’s measurements are 146 x 78.5 x 8.2mm, bigger than the MX4, but its thickness is 0.7mm and its weight is 140g.

The Pro version sports a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1536 display screen and uses the 2GHz Kirin 920 octa-core chipset. It also has 3GB RAM and has 32/64/128GB ROM. No information about the battery has been revealed as of now. The MX4’s 20.7mp IMX220 camera was also replaced with a 16mp IMX240 one for the Pro edition. The camera also has an f/1.8 aperture and can take 25 photos per second.

However, one problem with the photo is that this device is supposed to support China Telecom 2G and 3G but the Kirin 920 does not support China Telecom networks. Therefore, if the MX4 Pro does use the Kirin 920 and be China Telecom-supported, it must use a separate baseband chip.

A recent snapshot posted by Weibo user @DOSPY-山雨独酌 shows that the Huawei Mate 7’s processor is the Kirin 926. Based on the fact that this device has 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM, this must be the high-end version of the Mate 7.

So, what upgrades were made for the Kirin 925? It is bound to have a stronger GPU than the Kirin 920. Instead of the Kirin 920’s Mali-T628MP4 GPU, it should have the stronger Mali-T628MP6 GPU.

Although the Kirin 920 is a pretty good processor, its GPU is not very strong. If the Kirin 925 has stronger GPU then it should have better power consumption.

Having released a China Mobile version, it has been reported that Huawei will release a high-end China Unicom 4G version of the Honor 6 phone in stores this December.

Huawei will officially launch the China Unicom version (H60-L12) on August 12.  The high-end version will have 32GB internal memory space and have an NFC feature which the low-end version does not have. As a result, it will cost 2299 RMB.

       The rest of the China Unicom high-end version’s specifications are still the same as the other versions. It will still sport a 5-inch JDI display screen (in-Cell) with 1080p resolution. Its processor is the Kirin 920 chipset (four 1.7GHz Cortex-A15 and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7, supports a heterogeneous multi-processor/LTE Cat6 standard) and it has 3GB RAM. In addition, the Honor 6 is powered by a 3100mAh battery and sports a 5mp/13mp camera.

An industry insider recently revealed that Huawei’s next phone will use fingerprint recognition technology from Synaptics.

       Actually, Huawei’s newest flagship phone is the Huawei D3 (previously called “Jazz”). To be more precise, it is actually called the Mate 3 since it has been reported that Huawei merged the D series and Mate series. Previous reports stated that this phone sports a 6.1-inch touch screen and a built-in Kirin 920 octa-core processor (1.8GHz). However, according to the insider, Huawei hopes to take this phone to another level by improving safety settings by adding a fingerprint recognition feature.

Two versions of the Huawei Mate 3 will be released. Both will use a 6-inch touch screen but one will have 2K resolution while the other will have 1080p resolution. One version will also have 2GB RAM while the other will have 3GB RAM. Both will sport a 5mp/13mp camera and will use the Android 4.4.2 OS. Both support LTE 4G internet and will come with new apps from Huawei.

Production on the phone has already started and it is slated for release this September.

       Huawei has already started sending out invitations to the top media outlets in China for the 2014 Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) where there is a big chance that they will unveil the Ascend Mate 3 to the world for the first time. In the meantime, rumors and news about Huawei’s latest product have been spreading like a wildfire. In fact, information on the Mate 3’s specifications was released by Antutu early this week.

According to Antutu, the Ascend Mate 3 will have a very narrow frame and sport a 6-inch high-definition display screen and a 5mp front camera and 13mp rear camera. It supports 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory space and its processor is HiSilicon’s Kirin 920 octa-core chipset. Its operating system is the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS.

Antutu recently released information on the hardware of Huawei’s Ascend D3 which is set to come out later this year.

According to Antutu, its model number is Z100. In addition three other versions were discovered (Z100-TL10,Z100-CL00, and Z100-UL00). These versions will use three different operators.

It sports a 6.1-inch 1080p display screen and runs on the Kirin 920 octa-core chipset. The low-end version has 2GB RAM while the high-end version has 3GB. It also has a front-facing camera with 5mp and a rear-facing camera with 13mp. Its operating system is the Android 4.4.2.

According to Huawei, the Kirin 920 uses the Mali-T629 GPU, but according its results in the Antutu benchmark tesk, it uses the Mali-T624. The reason for this is unclear. However, it was actually reported that the Mali-T628 is actually a codename for the T624.

Huawei is currently working on their next device. We already know that the Huawei C199 and Huawei Honor H60 have already been listed in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s website, and it looks like the new Ascend Mate 3 will be launched this September.

A giant curtain was lifted over the smart phone market after the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Note series. Huawei has always wanted to compete with the Galaxy Note with their Mate series.

No official news on when the Galaxy Note 4 has been released but rumors say that it should come out in September. Huawei will also launch the Mate 3 in September hoping to crush the Note 4.

According to reports, the Huawei Mate 3 sports a 6-inch display screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and uses the HiSilicon Kirin 920 processor. Furthermore, three versions will be released at the same time, and should support the three big mobile operators in China.

I.                   An Improvement for Huawei

      Restricted by its microchip strategy, for more than three years, Huawei has not had a flagship phone in the truest sense even though the company has been targeting the high-end market since Yu Chengdong’s arrival.

After HiSilicon started producing microchips faster, the Honor 6 finally had standard cell phone functions. Besides its processor, Huawei has improved a lot in the last two years.

The base band of Huawei’s processors has surpassed Qualcomm’s and Huawei is the third company in the industry to integrate 4G base bands into their processors.

       Regarding ISP, their processors use Altek-based technology, improving the quality of photos.

As for videos, video processors and codecs can be customized and tests show that they are pretty good.

Regarding the software, the UI is pretty fluid even though it’s not exactly aesthetically pleasing. Huawei has also improved several small personalized functions.

Like the Oneplus, there are not any clear flaws with the Honor 6. ON the contrary, it has some amazing features. Its most useful feature is the Wifi. Xiaomi’s attempts at taking advantage of public WiFi and shared passwords has been criticized for privacy and safety problems and, as a result, failed. Huawei, though, could easily do this with the help of internet providers. Huawei’s partnership with providers is one of their strengths.

The Huawei 6 is the result of progress made by Huawei in the last two years and is an excellent product.

II.                Late opportunity

The Honor 6 was released on June 24, 2014, the end of the second quarter of the year.

Other cell phones with similar specs (four A15 cores, the Snapdragon 800 and more powerful processors) were released as early as the third quarter of 2013, but most appeared in the fourth quarter.

New phones have been coming out non-stop since late 2013, i.e. ZTE U988S, Mi 3, Nubia Z5S, ELIFE E7, ZTE Grand SII, OPPO Find 7, vivo Xplay 3S, Xshot, OnePlus One, Smartisan T1…

Costing 1999 RMB, the Honor 6’s biggest rivals are the OnePlus One, the cheaper Mi 3, and ZTE Grand SII. Costing 1499 RMB (241.62 USD), the Mi 3 should have a fighting chance.

The ZTE Grand SII has a replaceable battery. Although the Honor 6 is a great step forward for Huawei, but it does not have much a great advantage over the Oneplus One, with its design, craftsmanship, texture, and the Mi 3 with its cheap price.

If the Honor 6 was released in the fourth quarter of 2013 or the first quarter of 2014, it might have a bigger chance. But as it’s being released in the second quarter, it might not have much of a chance as its competitors are starting to cut prices.

What’s even more unfortunate is that MT6595 will be shipped in the third quarter of the year. Its features are excellent and it does not use too much power. Its low price should also lower the prices of powerful devices that will use it to around 1000 RMB (161.08 USD). This won’t leave the Honor 6 with a lot of time to get ready.

The Honor 6 is a great product but unfortunately it has come out at the wrong time. If Huawei really wants to fight back, they would continue to push HiSilicon to make better processors and catch up with Samsung and Qualcomm. At the same time, they should create more processors that use A57 cores and use the most advanced technology.

Things might just turn around in 2015 if Xiaomi and Huawei release products that use a 64-bit A57-core processor in the first quarter.

1. Why doesn’t the China Mobile edition of the Honor 6 support dual-SIM card?

Unlike the China Unicom version, the Honor 6 edition won’t be a dual-SIMphone. Both phones support TD-LTE/FDD-LTE/TD-SCDMA/WCDMA/GSM.

It’s not that Huawei cannot make the China Mobile edition dual-SIM, but when they first started designing the Honor 6, they did a survey of the habits of their uses and found that most of those that want a dual-SIM phone used China Mobile’s 2G internet and, so, did not find it necessary to make it dual-SIM.

Although the Honor 6 has a flight mode, it does not have a timer and cannot be turned off automatically.

3. Are there any plans to ship the Kirin 920 to other manufacturers?

Right now, HiSilicon’s chips will only be used by Huawei’s own devices. There are no plans to ship the Kirin 920 to other companies as more work still need to be done on it.

7.    Since FDD internet in the Honor 6 has been shut down, then how can anyone access 4G internet through the Unicom Edition?

Like all other processors, the Kirin 920 uses commonly-used ARM approved cores such as the A7, A15, and A9, but it’s not a processor that was simply put together from scraps. What distinguishes the Kirin 920 from other processors and gives it an advantage is its base band. Although, it’s not the only octa-core chipset around, its CPU, GPU, and baseband are different from those in other processors.

9.  Will customers have to rush to purchase the Honor 6?

According to Huawei, in the beginning, Huawei had several 100,000 phones on stock, but this could have been the plan based on the number of pre-orders. The writer thinks that as an electronic device, the Honor 6 is heading for the top-of-the-line market. Based on market expectations, initial sales should be fierce, but due to the Honor’s strong supply chain capacity, any shipping problems should be easily solved.

Theoretically, the Cat 6 can run at up to 300Mbps in an FDD network (220Mbps if TD-LTE). The Cat 4 can only run up to 150Mbps (100Mbps if TD-LTE).

2. H60-L01 and H60-L02 are 16GB storage, H60-L11 and H60-L12 is 32GB storage.

         On June 24, Huawei released the newest member of its flagship Honor series, the Honor 6. Besides being the first device to use Huawei’s Kirin 920 octa-core processor, it is also the first LTE Cat6-supported phone in China and has an internet speed of up to 300 Mbps.

The Honor 6 sports a 5-inch 1080p JDI display screen which uses in-cell display technology and a very thin bezel at only 2.86mm. It also has 3GB RAM and different versions have 16GB or 32GB internal memory storage. It also sports a 5mp/13mp camera and runs on a 3100mAh battery that has integrated Smart 2.0 power management technology. The 16GB version costs 1999 RMB (321.46 USD) and 2299 RMB (369.70 USD).

The new Huawei Honor 6 is imminent. It remains to be seen what the actual capabilities of this high-end smartphone will be but there are rumours of something special. There’s a press event scheduled to be held at Beijing’s Olympic Stadium on June 24th which should fill in the information gaps, but until then we have just speculation. Speculation about what may be the fastest smartphone ever made.

Huawei have given us some facts; the Honor 6 has the octa-core Kirin 920 CPU and 3GB RAM. The screen is said to be a 4.9 inch Full HD resolution and there will be a 13 megapixel camera capable of shooting 4k video. There will be an Android OS too. These are impressive specifications but they are not the full story. It is the Antutu score that has the rumour mill working overtime, and the story has been running for a long time. There was, some time ago, a Huawei benchmark score of almost 38000 discovered by Android users, this is a better result than the Galaxy S5, Xiaomi Mi 3 and the HTC One (M8). It is hard to know for sure due to the contestable accuracy of Huawei’s previous benchmark results, with them not matching up in practice to the official figures reported. While there are no official statistics yet, and the hope is for accuate ones, there is a rising optimism that the Huawei Honor 6 may be the smartphone equivalent of lightning.

It’s the battle of the processors. On one side we have Huawei’s own octa-core Kirin 920. On the other side we have Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 805. Who will emerge victorious?

The Kirin 920 was made using 28nm architecture and uses the big.Little framework. It consists of four Cortex-A15 (1-2.5GHz) cores and four Cortex-A7 (1.2-1.6 GHz) cores, both being very powerful cores. Its GPU is the Mali-T628, ARM’s newest GPU, which can support a display resolution of 2560 x 1600. Its frequency band is the BalongV7R2 which supports LTE Cat 6 (the Kirin 910’s built-in Balong V7R1 is Cat 4). It’s the first band to be integrated with the Cat 6. It also supports roaming, SGLTE/CSFB and 4G voice messaging programs like VoLTE.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 is a 64-bit processor with each core having a main frequency of 2.7GHz. Its GPU is the Adren 420. It also supports high-resolution display screens. It uses the Gobi 9×35 modem and, like the Kirin 920, supports Cat 6. At most, it can run on 300mbps. It also supports Blue Ray 4.1, GPS and other features.

Samsung’ will release an LTE-A version of the Galaxy S5 with the Snapdragon 805 while Huawei’s Honor 6 will use the Kirin 920. Which one do you think will be better?

The other day, Huawei held a launch event for the Kirin 920. It was not a launch for a cell phone but for a computer chip, the first time that Huawei ever did so. It looks like Huawei has been very proud of the newest member of its family. Since its launch, many articles have been written about it, but none have gotten down to the truth about it. Here, we will analyze it.

I.                  The K3V2 Tragedy

There is a long history behind HiSilicon but it has always made computer chips for things such as telecommunication devices and DVRs. It is Huawei’s factory for its devices’ features. K3 smart phones were already made years ago but these were only fakes.

HiSilicon only received recognition at the Barcelona Computer Expo where Yu Chengdong brought out the Huawei D1Q, the first quad-core cell phone to be formally released in the entire world. Its chipset was HiSilicon’s K3V2, which at the time caused a sensation.

The K3V2 is a classic AP. At the time, the quad-core A9 was considered to be the best but GPUs were in a mess. Each company followed their own standards. Apple liked the PowerVR, Samsung switched to Mali, Qualcomm traded AMD for Adreno, and HiSilicon chose Vivante.

HiSilicon came later than the others. Before the Vivante, it only used marvel. The ZTE U880 which used marvel suffered compatibility problems with its games. The K3V2 was no exception. Game incompatibility became a problem.

A more serious problem, though, was craftsmanship. High power consumption and overheating caused by its 40nm craftsmanship caused the K3V2 to experience underclocking.

II.      A turning point: The Kirin 910

The failure of the K3V2 did not mean that HiSilicon was going back to their old products. On the frequency band front, they created the Balong chip which supported 2G, 3G, and 4G, which was not easy.

Even powerful chips like those of Samsung and advanced ones like those of NVIDIA and Intel suffered setbacks when it came to 4G band. NVIDIA was one of the first to purchase it but its products could not use 4G. Intel’s acquisition of Infineon was not yet complete.

For the K910, HiSilicon integrated the Balong chip with its AP. It’s only competitor was MTK. The K910’s performance surpassed that of the MTK 6589 and was close to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600.

It’s important to mention that the K910 was not just an AP and BB integration, but that it was also integrated into Altek’s ISP, which produced great results.

The K910 became an SOC that should not be taken lightly.

III.            Rising like a Phoenix: The Kirin 920

Let’s take a look at the schematic of the Kirin 920 which has already become a very integrated SOC. Besides computer processors, frequency band chips, and GPUs, the Kirin 920 also integrated audio chips, video cores, ISPs, and a coprocessor (similar to the Apple’s M7). This chip can almost do anything.

As for its specifications, whether it’s its CPU, GPU, and others being one of the best in the world, there is plenty of reasons for HiSilicon to be proud.

Everyone knows that ARM’s A15 has experienced problems related to power consumption. The performance is good but consumes too much power. Many phones that use this chip may experience overheating, whether its NVIDIA or Samsung.

HiSilicon has made some improvements on the A16. Although it’s still not as good as Qualcomm and Apple’s cores, it’s no longer the simple free ARM version. They also improved the CPU’s and cache’s design. They also effectively integrated telecommunication technology into the chip. The improvements have been enough to make Huawei confident enough to hold a launch event for the Kirin 920.

III.           HiSilicon’s future

According to some reports, HiSilicon has already been given its ARM’s highest authorization, meaning that just like Apple and Qualcomm, HiSilicon’s future consists of being under ARM and that it may also design its own CPU.

After enduring two years of criticism and mockery, things are finally looking up for HiSilicon. From the K3V2 tragedy, to K910 surpassing MTK’s low-end chps, and the K920 becoming one of the best in the industry, how will things go for the K930 and 940?

Huawei has rumored to released their own octa-core processor, and today Huawei has officially release their new Huawei Haas Kirin 920 and Kirin 910T processor.

According to Mobile China League Secretary said through his microblogging site that Huawei Haas was released their new Kirin 920 mobile processorm this is the true octa-core processor from Huawei.

The new chipset is based on 28nm manufacturing process, the Kirin 920 is using big.LITTLE architecture that itegrates the eight core processor which contain four-core of Cortex-A15 and four core of Cortex-A17. This new processor is also support by mali-T620 GPU, this is the latest GPU that uses latest ARM architecture that support for 2560 × 1600 resolution display.

The new Kirin 920 is also support for LTE Cat 6 and support for global band, it’s also supports SGLTE / CSFB and VoLTE voice calls such as 4G way. According to the picture that posted on microblogging site, the new Huawei Haas Kirin processor is also appeared as Kirin 92x and this mobile processor seems ready to compete with another mobile chipset on the market, such as Snapdragon 805 processor.
