LG has been launching new smartphones under its G-series as well as V-series and the line between the two is now fading. So, when asked about the same during an interview, Frank Lee, Vice President of Marketing for LG clarified the company’s stance and shed light on its foldable smartphone.

He said that the V-series of smartphones is the one under which the company will be taking more chances. So, consider the V-series as the South Korean company’s testing pad for experimental devices. Further explaining this, he also revealed that when LG launches a foldable smartphone, it will most likely be under the V-series.

So, new features come to V-series smartphones first and are later offered in G-series phone. For example, the LG V40 ThinQ had the triple-camera setup first, which was later introduced in the G8 ThinQ. So, LG tries out new ideas in the V-lineup and when it is satisfied with the results, those get introduced in the G-lineup, which the company says is for “everyone.”

While LG has been working on a foldable smartphone, which is pretty evident with the patent applications and prototype leaks, the company has not officially said anything about it and when it plans to launch its first foldable smartphone.

Royole beat Samsung and Huawei with the launch of Royole FlexPai last month, which is the world’s first foldable smartphone. However, a few weeks ago, Samsung launched its foldable smartphone — Samsung Galaxy Fold and yesterday, Huawei introduced Huawei Mate X — the world’s first foldable 5G smartphone.

Meanwhile, LG has today announced two major smartphones during Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. The company has launched LG V50 ThinQ powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC and 5G connectivity support along with LG G8 ThinQ and LG G8s ThinQ with high-end specs.

Last year, in October, LG confirmed that it is working on a foldable smartphone but has not revealed any details related to the device. However, a new patent from the company has been published, which reveals what to expect from LG’s flexible smartphone in terms of design.

In the patent, the phone is said to have a flexible display on the outside, which is the first for LG. Previous prototypes of a foldable smartphone from LG involved display which was inaccessible when folded. While there are thicker bezels on the top and bottom, the boasts slimmer bezel on the left side. The device features a flexible display panel which curves on the right side.

When unfolded, the smartphone can be used as a table. The patent shows the usage of a unique hinge mechanism that’s fitted in between both portions which automatically extends from the left area of the smartphone.

As one would expect, the user interface automatically adapts to the different form factors and, when used in tablet mode, the extra middle portion of the display is used to display frequently used apps. The patent also shows a matrix-like camera setup to take multiple photos from different angles and another setup allows the cameras to generate 3D images.

However, this is just a patent and doesn’t guarantee that the company’s foldable smartphone will adopt this design. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to know more related to this smartphone and more details will emerge as the launch nears.

Previously it was reported that the LG’s foldable smartphone could be showcased at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 but the claim was quickly shot down. New reports indicate that the phone could be unveiled in Q3 2019.

Apart from LG, Samsung and Huawei are the two manufacturers confirmed to be working on a foldable smartphone. Both Samsung and Huawei were battling it out to be the first company to launch such device but Royole beat them. Meanwhile, Samsung has already showcased its foldable smartphone at SDC 2018 while Huawei’s phone is expected to launch in June 2019.

Foldable phones are not new in the gossip market, they are here from the past few years. This time, the manufacturers seem to be actually in works on foldable phones. As like of Samsung, LG is also developing a useful foldable device and is scheduled for launch next year. In order to enter the new era of foldable devices, LG Display is partnering with various China manufacturers. According to a new report, it is believed that LG is jointly working on smartphone panels with Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo.

A new report from the Korean media seems legitimate, as a group involvement is required to build next-generation devices. Mainly, foldable devices need a lot of research and development for its flexible display, panel, and case. Working together with each other will fasten the process and will ultimately lead to a successful device at the right time.

Further, as per the report, LG Chem, the company’s chemical division is expected to produce the adhesives, substrates, and another essential material needed for flexible devices is going to be developed at its Cheongju factory. This cooperation will bring different inventions accessible to LG and other partnering companies as per the agreement.

Huawei will develop a 6-inch flexible panel with LG, while details about Xiaomi in the partnership seems unavailable. Lenovo and LG Display are also preparing a 13.3-inch flexible display having a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. It is slated to begin production during the third quarter of 2019. Lenovo will use it in a commercial product by the end of 2019.

Unlike ‘inward’ design that other flexible devices are expected to carry, LG’s flexible device will be ‘outward’. It means both the halves of the display will be visible to users. One half will be on the front and the other on the rear side, though opening it would give you access to the full display.

LG Display is collaborating almost every big giant in China, despite its own LG electronics.

Although, Samsung is coming with the foldable device by the first half of next year. LG will reportedly showcase its foldable smartphone during CES 2019.

After Samsung, Huawei and Oppo, LG has also joined the league of foldable smartphones. Currently, all these manufacturers are building foldable devices, but none of them has launched it yet. Recently, Samsung pushed some positive news that they are making the foldable phone available for preview at the upcoming Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Francisco. Now, LG has also hinted that they working to build an interesting foldable smartphone but unfortunately, they don’t have any plans to launch it anytime soon.

LG has not disclosed any information about its new foldable devices in the recent past, but today they have revealed some details about it. Talking with our folks at the Android Headlines, LG said that they are already working on foldable smartphones from the past few years. They are emphasising to bring an interesting foldable smartphone rather than aiming to be first in the market with a foldable smartphone.

The new foldable device will be an extension to the LG G Flex which was launched in October 2013 with a flexible P-OLED display. Many other rumours and leaks are making it clear that LG is working on a foldable device. We have to wait for some time to get some more information about the foldable device.

Currently, LG is not revealing anything more about its foldable phone as they are shifting away by talking about the trends and time. It seems they want to surprise the audience with the foldable device. They are also focusing on the primitive devices to boost up the sales and profits of the mobile division.

On the other hand, Huawei has confirmed launch of its foldable device in mid-2019 with 5G support. Samsung will also come up with a foldable device which is expected to be released under the Galaxy F  series in January 2019.

South Korean tech company LG has successfully secured a patent for a tri-fold smartphone design from the World Intellectual Property Organization. The patent application was filed for inspection in December 2014 but the application just got approved last November and is coming out now.

The patented device is depicted in the sketches accompanying this post and it is shown to consist of three parts which look thin and can be folded outward like a leaflet.  The tri-fold display patent has three display patterns. On one of them, the main screen is in the middle and is equipped with a physical home button just underneath the display. The second and third design patterns see the side displays standing as the primary one and the others lying behind in a way whereby they can be pulled out from underneath it.

The three displays can be used for multi-tasking when fully unfolded and it is believed the single screen can function when the other two are closed. The three screens can also be used as one large single display but the aspect ratio would be somewhat elongated. All the screens are touchscreens but there are no further details. We don’t expect to find this patent in a commercial smartphone anytime soon. The closest we have seen is the Axon M which was unveiled last year and can’t really be called a top-performing smartphone.
