Nevertheless, the Razer Phone 2 is still popping up in the news from time to time.

The last we heard of it is the massive price slash which now sees the phone sell for $399, down from its launch price of $799. This week, images of a prototype with 8 times the storage and extra features have surfaced on the web.

The Razer Phone 2 is available in two configurations which are 8GB of RAM + 64GB and 8GB of RAM + 128GB of expandable storage. The prototype that has shown up on the web has a whopping 512GB of storage. If Razer had released this variant, we are pretty sure the price would be close to a $1000.

That is not all the prototype has got. Based on the photos shared by XDA-Developers member, Kountry83, the phone has a THX logo on the back. It also has dual SIM support, Widevine L1 support, and an unlocked bootloader with the DRMs intact.

The Razer Phone 2 has a single SIM slot, so a dual SIM variant would have been a welcome choice for a lot of buyers.

The Razer Phone 2 is a great purchase at $399 considering the features it packs. It has a 5.72-inch IGZO IPS LCD display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. The display has a 120Hz refresh rate that puts the OnePlus 7 Pro’s 90Hz screen to shame.

There is a Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood which should handle any game thrown at it without hiccups. It also has liquid cooling. There is no audio jack but the Razer Phone 2 has one of the best speakers you will find on a smartphone. The dual front-facing speakers have Dolby Atmos and THX-certified amplifiers. The Razer logo on the back has Razer’s Chroma customizable RGB lighting.

It has a single SIM slot and a microSD card slot for up to an additional 1TB of storage. There is also Bluetooth 5.0, dual 12MP rear cameras, an 8MP front-facing camera, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Razer Phone 2 packs a 4000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 4+ and 15W wireless charging.

Design

If you do not like gaming-centric aesthetics and you want a device which looks more like a traditional phone, then choose the Vivo iQOO, or at least it would be my choice. Vivo iQOO has a more elegant and even a more lightweight body. It looks like a normal flagship phone, but it still has an RGB light strip and capacitive buttons at the sides which can be used as triggers. If you need the best build quality, go for the Razer Phone 2 as it is water and dust resistant. Last but not least, Asus ROG Phone 2 is the more ergonomic one for gamers as it features AirTriggers and supports a lot of external accessories for advanced players.

Display

Here it is a hard fight between Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone 2. The former provides a higher level of detail as well as a higher peak brightness, while the latter comes with a lower detail but a better color reproduction (thanks to the HDR10 technology and high DCI-P3 coverage) and 240 Hz touch sensing for a more reactive gaming experience. Razer Phone 2 even comes with better stereo speakers (on the paper) as they support Dolby Atmos and they come with THX-certified amplifiers. Speakers are very important if you want an advanced multimedia experience as well as immersive gameplay.

Specs & Software

The highest performances are undoubtedly provided by the Asus ROG Phone 2. Indeed, it comes with the strongest processor: the Snapdragon 855 Plus providing 15 percent better graphics performance compared to the Snapdragon 855 (found on the Vivo iQOO), as well as a higher 2.96 GHz clock frequency. Further, the Asus ROG Phone 2 is the only to sport 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. It even comes with more advanced software as it is able to switch between a stock Android experience and a customized Android fork especially meant for gamers just like every ROG product.

Camera

Do not expect the best camera phone when you are about to choose a gaming phone. All of these handsets come with high-end cameras, but they are far from flagships. My favorite one is the Asus ROG Phone as it is the only to sport a 48 MP main sensor (besides its ultrawide lens), laser autofocus and super slow-motion at 480 fps (720p only). Further, it has a higher resolution for its front camera. But Razer Phone 2 still remains an amazing camera phone thanks to its OIS, a pretty nice 12 MP main sensor and an additional telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. Vivo iQOO does not convince me at all when it comes to cameras, despite it has a triple setup.

Battery

With a mammoth 6000 mAh battery, Asus ROG Phone 2 is more like a power bank rather than a normal smartphone. It wins the battery life comparison and it is even able to charge other devices thanks to its reverse charging technology.

Price

Asus ROG Phone 2 debuted in China with a €900/$1000 starting price, Razer Phone 2 started from €850/$950 (but now it dropped a lot), and Vivo iQOO starts from just €400/$445. While Vivo iQOO has the highest value for money, Asus ROG Phone 2 wins the comparison due to its amazing display, performance and a way bigger battery.

Design

The design is a very subjective matter when it comes to gaming phones. There are people who prefer aggressive and original aesthetics such as Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 with their LED strips, while others want a more standard and elegant design such as Razer Phone 2. If we exclude the subjective elements, there are three things making the difference here: build quality, keys, and options to connect accessories. On the Nubia Red Magic 3, you get more physical keys you can use in-game, as well as rear pins to connect additional accessories. On the other hand, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 has a pressure sensitive display which lets you map the buttons to the sides of the screen. Razer Phone 2 does not offer these features, but it is water resistant and it has an oleophobic coating for the display. Nubia Red Magic 3 seems a bit more comfortable for gamers.

Display

The most stunning display for gamers is the one found on the Razer Phone 2, despite it is not an AMOLED panel. Indeed, it comes with the highest refresh rate (120 Hz) that is very useful in-game, as well as the highest resolution (QHD) for a higher level of detail, wide color gamut and higher brightness.

Specs & Software

Razer Phone 2 loses this comparison because it has a less impressive chipset: we are talking about the old-gen Snapdragon 845, while Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 are equipped with the new Snapdragon 855 chipset. In order to establish which one performs better between Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3, we will have to see how the air cooling of the Nubia Magic 3 behaves, but we have higher expectations for the Red Magic.

Camera

Despite coming with flagship-class performances, these devices are not exactly the best camera phones, but they are still good at taking photos. Nubia Red Magic 3 has just a single camera, but it is very interesting due to its 48 MP resolution and the capability to record 8K videos and 1920 fps slow motion videos. On the other hand, Razer Phone 2 comes with OIS and 2x optical zoom, better features for photos. Even Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is pretty nice with its 48 MP main sensor supported by a 12 MP telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom.

Battery

With its huge 5000 mAh battery, the Nubia Red Magic 3 should be able to beat the competition in a lot of scenarios. We say should because we do not know how much energy the rotating fan working at 14K rpm will consume. So, just like the cameras, we have to test the battery life of the Nubia Red Magic 3 in order to give a definitive opinion.

Price

The price is the weakest point of the Razer Phone 2 as it was launched with a price tag of €850/$950. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3 debuted in China for just €450/$500 and €385/$430 respectively. At the end of the day, if we base on the specs on the paper, due to its big battery, its physical keys, the rear pins, and the 90 Hz refresh rate, Nubia Red Magic 3 looks like the device with the highest value for money.

Razer Phone 2 received Android 9.0 Pie update less than a month ago, and its updated Kernel source code is now available. The source code would come in handy for the custom ROM and third-party recovery development. Interested users can get the source code and factory images from the Razer’s official website.

It’s mandatory for smartphone manufacturers to release the modifications they do on the Linux Kernel (Android). The AT&T’s and other carrier specific kernels are also available for download.

Razer Phone 2 received plenty of new improvements such as gesture navigation, 4K video recording at 60 FPS, and Digital Wellbeing via Android Pie update.

It’s a boon for the developers as factory images and kernel source will assist them in creating third-party MODs and ROMs.

However, that lingered until last week when Razer hinted that the Razer Phone 2 will get Android Pie update on February 27. As scheduled, Android 9.0 Pie update is now available for the Razer Phone 2.

The new Pie update will see the phone “operate more intuitively, more efficiently utilize its battery and significantly enhance the user experience for gaming and entertainment”. The phone maker did not reveal many details of what the new update brings to the table but it should be noted that the Phone 2 runs stock Android. So, the device will get all the new features which Android Pie brings. One of such features is Gesture navigation which yours sincerely is enjoying on my Redmi Note 6 Pro.

For now, only the unlocked Razer Phone 2 models are getting the Android Pie update. The AT&T model is scheduled to get the update on April 4th, if Razer sticks to schedule. Unfortunately, the gaming phone maker is yet to reveal when the original Razer phone will get Android Pie.

It was soon to get several rivals in the Black Shark, ASUS ROG. Razer would soon follow up the first model with the Razer Phone 2 which came with several improvements. Away from the razzmatazz of a phone launch, Razer may be in deep water financially. There are reports that the company has laid off some of its workforce in order to limit its running cost.

According to tech blog Droid Life, Razer laid off up to 30 employees which represent about two percent of its total workforce. Razer has business concerns in other tech products apart from mobile phones but the report claims that the 30 employees are connected mostly with the mobile division at Razer. This could only mean that the Razer Phone 3 may have been halted.

Read Also: Razer Phone 2 scheduled to get Android 9 Pie update later this month

Razer issued a press statement confirming that it laid off several employees in its mobile division, The statement also clarified that some workers were reassigned to other projects within the company. As a ray of hope, the gaming phone manufacturer hinted that it still sees great opportunities in the mobile gaming space and will continue to invest in this category through a combination of hardware and software initiative. The company also stated that they were working on new exciting mobile projects and details will be shared when the products are ready. The statement also disclosed that the Razer Phone 2 will continue to be on sale and will get the latest updates and features. But in an era where attention is shifting to foldable phones, we do hope a high level of interest is sustained for gaming phones. That is the only way Razer’s mobile division and other gaming phone makers can stay afloat and become profitable.

In related news, the company has recently fired 2 percent of its workforce, about 30 employees. Rumor has it those people were working on the Razer Phone 3, which now seems to have been canceled. However, the company has not officially said that the next-gen gaming smartphone has been canceled but it has acknowledged the layoffs, saying it has shut down several projects.

Design

If you want a gaming-centric device even when it comes to aesthetics, then you should go for the Nubia Red Magic Mars which features an RGB illuminated LED strip and physical gaming keys on its backside. If you want the soberest and the most beautiful device, Huawei Mate 20 X looks like a normal phone but it is impressive because of its very high screen-to-body ratio. But it is a very big phablet due to its 7.2-inch display, while Razer Phone 2 is definitely the most equilibrated one for both gamers and normal users with its glass back and its water resistance (IP67).

Display

If you want the best gaming experience, the display of Razer Phone 2 is the best for you because it has a 120 Hz refresh ratio and a very high brightness, as well as a 2K resolution. It even reproduces colors in an excellent way. There are even loud stereo speakers. But if you want a bigger display for productivity, note that Huawei Mate 20 X has an almost tablet-like 7.2-inch panel.

Specs & Software

Huawei Mate 20 X has the most powerful chipset, but it comes with the lowest quantity of RAM: just 6 GB. Nubia Red Magic Mars has a still excellent SoC and it comes with up to 10 GB of RAM. These is what we read on the paper, but we will have to try the Red Magic Mars personally in order to see if there is a noticeable difference in performances.

Camera

Gaming phones are never the best camera phones, but Huawei Mate 20 X is an exception. It has the same triple camera as the Mate 20 Pro, which is the best triple camera setup actually available, with a primary 40 MP sensor, a secondary 20 MP ultrawide lens and an 8 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

Battery

Given that it is the biggest phablet of the trio, Huawei Mate 20 X has the biggest battery as well. We still had no chance to test Nubia Red Magic Mars’ battery life, but it is unlikely that it will offer a longer battery life than Huawei Mate 20 X.

Price

Overall, Huawei Mate 20 X is the best smartphone of the trio, but in my opinion Razer Phone 2 is the best one for gaming due to its high refresh ratio, Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, and other important gaming-centric features. However, while Huawei Mate 20 X and Razer Phone 2 have very high listing prices (€800/$905 and €850/$961 respectively), Nubia Red Magic Mars costs just €420/$475 and it is the best one in terms of quality-price ratio.

Design

As said above, Xiaomi Black Shark Helo, Asus ROG Phone and Razer Phone 2 all feature a gaming-centric design, so they are not exactly for you if you like elegant phones. The one with the soberest and refined design is Razer Phone 2, which I would pick as I like black and elegant devices. And I also like it because it is water-resistant with the IP67 certification.

Display

Razer Phone 2 would be my choice even when it comes to the display quality. It has the screen with the highest resolution, it has a high brightness and it even has the highest refresh rate which is the most important thing for games. That is why I prefer this display, but note that Asus ROG Phone is able to provide more satisfying colors due to its wide color gamut and the HDR technology.

Specs & Software

While Razer Phone 2 looks more attractive for its display, Asus ROG Phone and Xiaomi Black Shark Helo have a superior hardware. While the first is the only device which has an overclocked Snapdragon 845 chipset, the second is the world’s first smartphone which comes with 10 GB of RAM (in its most expensive version only). Given that we still had no chance to try the new Xiaomi flagship, we still can not tell you which has better performance.

Camera

At least on the paper, the most interesting camera department belongs to Xiaomi Black Shark Helo. It boasts two sensors on the back, both with a bright f/1.8 aperture. Further, the dual camera is able to perform 2x optical zoom. However, I have to try it personally to make a definitive conclusion.

Battery

As they all have the same capacity, there will not be so much difference between the battery life of these devices. So, we suggest you not to choose your gaming phone by basing on the battery life; all of them can last long on a single charge.

Price

Asus ROG Phone is my favorite handset of the trio and it is the winner of this comparison as it boasts amazing performance, a pretty nice display and it supports important gaming accessories thanks to its secondary USB-C port. But Xiaomi Black Shark Helo has the best value for money because the company just launched it in China for just $505, while Asus ROG Phone and Razer Phone 2 cost $969/€850 and $1026/€900, respectively.

Design

These are three devices with very different aesthetics, two of which have atypical gaming-centric designs. The one which is mostly similar to a typical smartphone is Huawei Mate 20 X, but it is also the biggest one and it is more like a tablet. Asus ROG Phone instead has a very aggressive design. I would pick the one in the middle: Razer Phone 2, not only for its more elegant looks but also because it is water resistant.

Display

When it comes to the view quality, the best display is the one of Razer Phone 2. It has a 5.72-inch 16:9 panel with Sharp’s IGZO technology. The panel has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, the highest ever seen on a phone, as well as a high Quad HD resolution. And it also features a very high brightness. On the other hand, Asus ROG Phone features the HDR technology and DCI-P3 coverage which provides better colors, but it has a lower detail as well as a lower refresh rate. Huawei Mate 20 X has the less impressive quality but it has a bigger display (7.2 inches) and it supports the M Pen with 4096 pressure levels.

Specs & Software

The most powerful hardware side actually in the market belongs to Asus ROG Phone, which boasts the best processor in the market (Qualcomm Snapdragon 845) overclocked at a frequency of 2.96 GHz). It also comes with whopping 8 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage. However, note that we still did not test the performance of the new Kirin 980 as Huawei Mate 20 X is still not in the market: it may result even better than Asus ROG Phone.

Camera

Huawei Mate 20 X has the best camera side as it features the same triple camera setup as the Huawei P20 Pro. It includes a main sensor with a huge 40 MP resolution, a secondary 20 MP ultrawide sensor and an 8 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. It has no rivals in the gaming smartphones sector.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 X wins even the battery challenge because it features a bigger 5000 mAh unit, that it was possible to integrate due to its bigger dimensions. You will need a bit more to charge it, but you can get more gaming hours on a single charge. Note that Asus ROG Phone has an additional USB-C port to connect important accessories to enhance the gaming experience, such as a joypad, an external cooler and more.

Price

Huawei Mate 20 X will be soon available with a price tag of €900/$1037, Asus ROG Phone starts from €900 as well, while Razer Phone 2 starts from €850/$980. If you are specifically looking for a gaming device, then Asus ROG Phone is the choice that has most sense, but if you also need a smartphone for other advanced activities such as productivity or photography, Huawei Mate 20 X is the best choice.

It packs some good upgrades over its predecessor with similar pricing. Razer has made it available with the “Razer Chroma RGB logo” for customisable RGB lighting. It’s available only in a couple of colour options. In order to give users more options to choose, Razer will be introducing a clear glass back variant of the device very soon.

Razer’s design will beautifully fit into the transparent module showing its rugged and functional design. It’s not a new thing, Xiaomi (Mi 8 EE) and HTC (HTC U12+) already have devices featuring a transparent back. In the year 2015, famous YouTuber JerryRig peeled off colour from glass-backed phones gathering a good reception. Later, with popularity, OEMs started producing devices with transparent designs.

The transparent Razer Phone 2 will give users an extraordinary look of internals with the RGB Led lighting. We hope it will make a special place among the fans of the Razer gaming smartphones.

Currently, there’s no information regarding its availability and pricing. It’s also not clear that whether it will bring any change in its internals or not and will be a fully transparent or translucent on the backside. We are looking forward to some more details about the transparent Razer Phone 2.

Additionally, Razer Phone 2 carries Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 8GB RAM and 64GB/128GB internals storage. Users can also expand the external storage to 1 TB via a microSD card. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with a 4000 mAh battery. Razer phone 2 carries a 5.72 inch IGZO LCD QHD display with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. In connectivity, there’s a 24-bit USB Type-C DAC, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and much more. You can read all about the Razer Phone 2 from our launch article here.

Design

Let your tastes decide, there is not a winner in terms of beauty as these are three gaming-centric phone with gaming-centric aesthetics. Razer Phone 2 is the soberest one with a clean design but also an RGB illuminated Razer Logo on the rear side. Asus ROG Phone has an aggressive design which I personally like more than Black Shark, and it also has three pressure sensitive areas on the back. Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone are water resistant, while Black Shark is not.

Display

Razer Phone 2 has the best display, even though it is an IPS panel. It has the IGZO and a high Quad HD resolution, as well as the 16:9 aspect ratio which the company defines more suitable for multimedia and games. Besides a high pixel density, it also has the highest brightness and the highest refresh rate (120 Hz). While Razer Phone 2 has the best display for detail and games, Asus ROG Phone should be better when it comes to color reproduction, thanks to its 108.6 percent DCI-P3 coverage, HDR technology, and the Super AMOLED panel.

Specs & Software

In its most expensive variant, Asus ROG Phone has a better hardware side than Razer Phone 2 and Xiaomi Black Shark. The Snapdragon 845 SoC which powers each of these handsets is overclocked on the Asus ROG Phone and this handset is the only one which comes with 512 GB of internal storage (not expandable, unlike Black Shark, but external SD cards have not the same performance as the internal storage).

Camera

Razer Phone 2 has the camera department which convinces us the most, but we will have to test it to confirm our thoughts. It comes with OIS, a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Both the rear and the front camera can record videos at 60 fps while keeping a 1080p resolution (the rear one can even record in 4K at 60 fps).

Battery

The battery capacity is the same for all of these devices: 4000 mAh. It is an above-average capacity and it is very important for gamers to have a long-lasting battery as games consume a lot. We still can not say for sure which one will last more, but the differences in battery life will be very marginal.

Price

Asus ROG Phone is definitely the winner of this comparison and it is the most complete phone of this trio, but it costs more than its opponents. You can get it for about $899/$776 in the U.S. while Razer Phone 2 will launch at $800/€850. Xiaomi Black Shark costs just €450/$520.

The Razer Phone 2 comes with improved design, upgraded specs and some unique features.

Design and Display

The Razer Phone 2 sports glass rear instead of the metal which gives it a premium look and it also enables wireless charging on the device. It has a boxy appeal with an aluminum frame running along its edges. The Razer Phone 2 is an IP67 certified dust and water-resistant device. It measures 158.5 x 79 x 8.5mm and weighs 220 grams. Razer has included stereo speakers on the smartphone. One of them is present on the top bezel whereas the other one is available on the bottom bezel of the phone.

Chroma RGB backlit enabled Razer logo present on the backside of the phone can be customized to display over 16.8 million color of lights. Also, it can also glow different colors for individual notifications. The Chroma logo supports effects such as static color, breathing and color spectrum cycling. The wireless charging dock available for the Razer Phone 2 also supports Chroma lighting. The handset does not feature a 3.5mm audio jack. The fingerprint scanner is embedded under the power button of the smartphone.

Like the predecessor model, the Razer Phone 2 houses a 5.7-inch IGZO LCD display by Sharp that deliver a pixel density of 514ppi. The display supports 16:9 aspect ratio and produces Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It offers a refresh rate of 120Hz and carries support for HDR and DCI-P3 color gamut. The Gorilla Glass 5 layer protects the display of Razer Phone 2. Compared to the original Razer Phone, the display of its successor produces 50 percent more brightness.

Chipset, RAM and Battery

The Snapdragon 845 chipset powers the Razer Phone 2. For controlling the internal temperature of the smartphone, the company has added graphite-based vapor chamber cooling system inside the device which appears like a heat pipe made out of server grade materials. The handset is packed with 4,000mAh battery like the original model. It is equipped with support for Quick Charge 4+ and 15W wireless charging. According to Razer, the Razer Phone 2 can offer nearly 10 hours of on-screen time when the display refresh rate is set at 120Hz.The Razer Phone 2 is loaded with near-stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo OS. According to the company, it the Razer Phone 2 is the only smartphone that supports Netflix certified HDR video with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The SD845 SoC is coupled with 8 GB of RAM. It comes in two internal storage choices of 64 GB and 128 GB. For more storage, the phone offers a microSD card slot.

It includes a wide-angle 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 with f/1.7 aperture as the main sensor which is coupled with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX351 telephoto lens with f/2.6 aperture. The main sensor supports Dual Pixel AF and optical image stabilization (OIS). The Razer Phone 2 can shoot 2160p quality videos at 60fps. The launch is scheduled to begin in less than 12 hours but just before then, the phone was briefly up on Amazon Italy. The page has now been pulled down but some sites were able to grab the important info before it went down.

The Razer Phone 2 keeps some of the specs of its predecessor such as the 5.72-inch QHD LCD display which has a 120Hz refresh rate. The RAM is the same at 8GB and storage also remains 64GB which is surprising since AnTuTu revealed it has a 512GB ROM.

There are new things too such as a Snapdragon 845 processor and a Razer Chroma RGB logo. Owners should be able to customize the RGB lights just as they can customize other Razer products with Chroma. The Razer Phone 2 also has a unique “vapor cooling chamber” to prevent the phone from heating up while playing games.

[envira-gallery id=”216000″]

The Razer Phone 2 has its dual rear cameras in a new position which we first saw in a leaked render a few weeks ago. The front bezels are still huge and are definitely home to stereo THX certified speakers. The power button also doubles as the fingerprint scanner.

The rear is apparently covered in glass as Amazon mentions it has support for wireless charging although there is no mention of the battery capacity. The phone is also IP67 water-resistant.

The Razer Phone 2 might sell for much more than expected as the listing showed a price tag of €870. That is more than a €100 increase when compared to last year’s model that had a €750 launch price.

We advise you keep you take the price with a pinch of salt as Razer might announce something different at today’s launch.

The image which was shared on Twitter by Evan Blass, confirms that the Razer Phone 2 will retain the 16:9 aspect ratio of its predecessor. The two thick bezels at the top and bottom of the screen likely house speakers like the original Razer Phone, so we expect a similar or better audio performance.

The top bezel is also home to two large holes – one is home to the front camera and the other houses the usual sensors. There is a USB-C port at the bottom and it is flanked by two antenna lines.

Yes, @gsmarena_com, it does light up.

The back of the phone is where the most changes have occurred. The Razer Phone w will come with dual rear cameras like the original but the sensors are now sitting in the middle of the phone. Also, the LED flash is now flanked on either side by the camera sensors.

The familiar Razer logo is green is neon green and Evan Blass says there is an LED underneath as earlier rumored. The material used for the back of the device looks much smoother than that of the original but we can’t confirm if it is glass or aluminum. There is no fingerprint scanner on the rear or front of the device, so it’s likely still under the power button.

The Razer Phone 2 will come with a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. The display should also retain the 120Hz refresh rate of the original. The phone will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

The wave saw the launch of several gaming phones after Razer unveiled the first gaming phone. models such as AUS ROG phone, Nubia Red Magic, Xiaomi Black Shark phone, Honor Play and more were launched. Razer is now working on the Razer Phone 2 and already, press invites are sent out for an event holding on October 10. Ahead of the event, Razer has listed the model on the Google Play Console which means the device may have been certified by Google Play.

The Play Console listing reveals the device goes by the codename – Aura. This clearly distinguishes the model from last year’s model which was codenamed “Cheryl”. Among the key specs listed is an 8GB RAM as well as a Snapdragon 835 chipset and Adreno 540 GPU. But for the chipset, the listing wouldn’t have been in doubt. The Razer Phone 2 is expected to utilise a Snapdragon 845 chipset with the Adreno 630 GPU firing up the graphics. It is possible this is an error anyway because sources say its unusual for a high-profile device to show up in the Google Play Console ahead of launch.

The Razer Phone 2 is expected to have the same 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution which is the same with the first-gen model’s screen resolution. The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo OS. There are rumours the device will pack Chroma LED effects for notification. The press renders accompanying the listing also shows few changes in the design.

We earlier speculated October 10 as the launch date based on the phone’s renders but the company has now confirmed this by sending out press invites.

The upcoming Razer Phone 2 is the successor of the Razer Phone, a smartphone made specifically for the purpose of gaming, launched in November last year.

Recently, the phone had surfaced online on AnTuTu, revealing its specifications. The listing confirmed that the phone will come with a 5.7-inch QHD Sharp IGZO display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and support for Qualcomm Q-Sync. The device will be powered by Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor coupled with 8GB RAM and a whopping 512GB of internal storage.

The phone is expected to be running on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box. We are also expecting improvements in terms of camera performance and battery. Earlier, there were reports claiming that the Razer Phone 2 will be sporting Chrome LED effects that will light up the device when it receives notifications.

The leaked render of the upcoming Razer Phone 2 suggests that it is equipped with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio instead of the 19:9 aspect ratio as is the current trend. The leak only shows the front side of the Razer Phone 2, thus there’s no confirmation on whether the handset will sport a different rear design than the original device.

When the Razer Phone was launched last year, there was no competition for a gaming smartphone. Since then, a couple of gaming smartphones have made their way to the market, including Nubia Red Magic, Xiaomi’s Black Shark gaming phone, and Asus ROG Phone.

The Razer Phone 2 has been recently spotted on various benchmarking platforms such as Geekbench and AnTuTu through which its key specs have been revealed. Today, Android Headlines has shared a render of the upcoming Razer Phone 2. The publication has claimed that it has acquired the render from a reliable source.

Razer Phone 2 render

In the below image, the Razer Phone 2 is placed on the right whereas the original Razer Phone can be seen on the left. The image reveals that the front design of Razer Phone 2 resembles a lot with the original Razer Phone. A close observation reveals that the Razer Phone 2 features slightly thicker side bezels. Also, there the alignment of the selfie camera is also a bit different on the Razer Phone 2.

The Razer Phone 2 render suggests that it is equipped with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio like the predecessor model. Since the new leak reveals only the front appearance of the Razer Phone 2, there is no confirmation on whether the handset will be sporting a different rear design than the original device. Earlier in this week, popular tipster Roland Quandt had claimed that the Razer Phone 2 will be sporting Chrome LED effects that will light up when the device receives notifications.

The Geekbench and AnTuTu benchmarks of Razer Phone 2 have revealed that is equipped with Snapdragon 845. The SoC will be coupled with 8 GB of RAM. The device will come loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo OS. According to the AnTuTu listing of Razer Phone 2, its screen carries support for Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels which indicates that it may feature a 5.7-inch IGZO IPS screen that has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The handset is also expected to arrive with an internal storage of 512 GB.

The Razer Phone 2 may feature a 4,000mAh battery or slightly larger battery. The dual 12-megapixel rear cameras of the original phone were criticized because of it delivered mediocre photography experience. The company had to release multiple updates after the launch of the smartphone to improve its camera performance. Hence, it is very likely that the Razer Phone 2 will be equipped with an enhanced dual camera setup.

It carries Snapdragon 845 with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of ROM. The new appearance has confirmed the previously leaked benchmark results on Geekbench. Previously, Razer Phone was spotted on Geekbench with similar specs. Along with the spec details, it scored 283,397 points which is really huge in terms of overall performance. Recently, the renders of the device surfaced which allowed us to know more about its design.

This time thanks to AnTuTu, we have some more details about the Razer Phone 2. It carries 5.7 inch of Sharp IGZO LCD screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. Razer Phone 2 has attained higher refresh rates at 120 hz with the help of Qualcomm Q Sync display technology. It will ultimately help users while playing high end games on the mobile device. Currently, it’s not clear whether Razer Phone 2 will carry a big notch display or waterdrop display.

Razer Phone 2 specs

In terms of specs, Razer Phone 2 will carry Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630 for high-end gaming. It will come in the combination of 8GB+512 GB storage, which is quite a big upgrade in comparison to the 64 GB storage with the previous year’s model. Razer Phone 2 will run on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

In Geekbench, for the single core test it scored 2,026 points and for multi core it hit 8,234 points. On Antutu, it scored overall 283,397 points, but we suggest not to take these scores seriously, as these are attained under the testing environments. In reality, the device might have a different (likely lesser) score as it will be in a real environment.

Recalling the Razer Phone first generation specs, it carries the same 5.7 inch IGZO LCD screen with the 1440X 2560 display. It packs Snapdragon 835 with 8GB of RAM. In the camera department, there is 12MP+12 MP of dual sensors for better photography.

We expect the device to launch in the month of October or November along with the Android 9.0 Pie on the board. What other changes do you expect from this year’s Razer Phone 2 ?

Xiaomi Black Magic, ASUS ROG, Nubia Red Magic are some of the models specifically crafted for gaming which have been launched since then. While the trend isn’t catching on as we had expected, Razer is already working on the Razer 2 and that was officially confirmed recently.

The Razer Phone 2 has now been benchmarked on GeekBench giving us our first look at some of the specs of the model. Geekbench isn’t always very generous when it comes to specs details but it reveals some. The Razer phone 2 comes with 8GB of RAM and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm processor which is likely the Snapdragon 845 chipset. This is a slight upgrade over the Razer Phone which features an 8GB RAM and a Snapdragon 835 CPU. The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo OS. Other details like the battery capacity and display are still unknown but we expect a bigger battery than the 4000mAh battery on the Razer Phone.

However, the Razer Phone that was unveiled in November 2017 was the smartphone that had begun the current trend of gaming phones. The earnings report released by Razer confirms that the company is working on the second-generation Razer Phone.

The earnings report has no mentioning of the exact sales figure of the Razer Phone. It reveals that the smartphone was released in limited numbers and it garnered positive reviews across the world. Even the rumor mill is calling the successor phone as Razer Phone 2, there is no official confirmation on its moniker. Moreover, there is no information available on its specifications.

The company is now working on bringing its software and services from PC to the mobile market. There is a possibility that the existing Razer Phone and its successor could include Razer’s PC services such as zGold wallet, Razer Cortex Stream, rewards platform and Razer Game Store.

The company had showcased Project Linda concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018. It is a laptop-like device that features a slot for placing the Razer Phone. The laptop is powered by the internals of the Razer Phone. Also, the display of the phone can be used as a touchpad. Probably, the company is also planning to officially debut the laptop dock alongside the Razer Phone 2. The handset is rumored to go official by the end of 2018 in China. Some reports are claiming that the company may have axed the Project Linda because the company has not spoken since its unveiling at CES 2018. Also, it is not mentioned in the earnings report that confirms the existence of Razer Phone 2.

Like the predecessor model, the Razer Phone 2 is rumored to arrive with 120 Hz display and 8 GB of RAM. It may feature the same 4,000mAh or larger battery. The Razer Phone 2 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 845.

The newest Qualcomm flagship that is currently available in the market is the Snapdragon 845. Some rumors are claiming that the Razer Phone 2 may feature the Snapdragon 855 that is expected to get announced in December. However, it may so happen that Razer may announce the Razer Phone 2 with Snapdragon 845 in November just as the predecessor smartphone was launched in the same month in 2017.

In the recent past, some manufacturers have launched gaming-centric smartphones such as Xiaomi Black Shark, Nubia Red Magic, ASUS ROG Phone, Honor Play and Honor Note 10. The original Razer Phone was not launched in China, but the upcoming Razer Phone 2 is likely in the country to rival with aforementioned gaming phones.

A French publication has revealed that Razer is working n a second-generation smartphone that will probably arrive in the market with Razer Phone 2 moniker in September this year.

During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018, Razer had demonstrated Project Linda. It is a laptop dock that features a 13.3-inch display, battery of 53.6 Wh, 200 GB of internal storage and some connectivity features like USB-A, USB-C and 3.5mm audio jack.

Users of Project Linda can place the Razer Phone in a slot where the touchpad is normally present. This way the Razer Phone when placed in the laptop dock can function as a touch pad. Its processor and RAM will be driving force for the laptop dock. Moreover, it can also function as a secondary display as shown in the image in this post.

It took around two-three month to build Project Linda before the CES 2018 and the company was able to design it in a short span of one month. The general design of the laptop dock has been borrowed from Razer Blade Stealth notebook. As far as software is concerned, Razer had teamed up with Sentio, a company that specializes in turning Android smartphones into laptops.

It is speculated that the Razer Phone 2 may get unveiled in September this year through the IFA 2018 tech trade show. As of this writing, there is no information available on the specifications of the upcoming Razer Phone 2 smartphone. The company is expected to launch the Project Linda laptop dock alongside the smartphone. An internal source has revealed that the company would be taking a call in the next days to decide on the launch of Project Linda. Recently, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan had hinted to Marques Brownlee on Twitter that the company may launch Project Linda.
