Volkswagen is recalling more than 44,000 ID.4 electric vehicles in the United States due to battery-related fire risks, according to two recall notices published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday. Both recalls affect recent model-year ID.4 vehicles and involve potential issues with the high-voltage battery system.

The first recall is relatively small, covering 670 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years. According to Volkswagen’s report to the NHTSA, these vehicles may have a manufacturing defect in their battery cell modules. During a specific production period, electrodes inside the battery cells may have been misaligned, which could increase the risk of a battery fire under certain conditions.

While a permanent fix is being prepared, Volkswagen is asking affected owners to take several precautions. These include limiting battery charging to 80 percent, avoiding DC fast charging, and parking the vehicle outdoors after charging. Volkswagen says its final solution will be to replace the potentially faulty battery modules free of charge.

The second recall affects more than 40,000 Volkswagen ID.4

The second recall is much larger, affecting 43,881 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years. In this case, the issue is related to missing battery monitoring software. The vehicles were not equipped with Volkswagen’s “self-discharge detection” software, which is designed to identify unusual battery behavior.

According to the recall report, in rare situations, a high-voltage battery module could experience thermal runaway, a condition that can lead to a vehicle fire. Volkswagen notes that a clear root cause has not yet been identified for all reported incidents. As part of the recall, the company will perform battery health checks, install updated software, and replace battery modules if needed.

Both recalls involve battery modules supplied by SK Battery America, a unit of South Korean battery manufacturer SK On. Between 2024 and 2025, at least five battery overheating incidents involving the ID.4 were reported in the US. Investigations linked the failures to hardware abnormalities, including electrode displacement inside the battery.

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s best-selling electric vehicle and a key part of its shift toward electrification. In 2025, global sales of the ID.4, including the coupe-style ID.5, reached 163,400 units, a year-over-year increase of nearly 27 percent. This recall will definitely make a dent in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle profile.

The ID.UNYX offers a choice of two powertrains. A rear-wheel-drive version utilizes a 170 kW electric motor, while an all-wheel-drive option pairs an 80 kW front motor with a 170 kW rear motor. The all-wheel-drive variant achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in a brisk 5.6 seconds. Both configurations come equipped with an 82.4 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 621 km for the rear-wheel-drive model and 565 km for the all-wheel-drive variant. Drivers can choose from five driving modes: Sport, Eco, Comfort, Individual, and Dynamic Traction Control, to tailor the car’s performance to their needs.

Measuring 4663 mm long, 1860 mm wide, and 1610 mm tall, the ID.UNYX offers a spacious and comfortable interior with a wheelbase of 2766 mm. This new electric SUV marks a significant step for Volkswagen (Anhui), established in 2017 as the automaker’s third joint venture in China. The ID.UNYX represents the first electric car produced by the venture, and it’s sure to turn heads with its stylish design, advanced technology, and impressive range.

The two companies have established a joint lab in China called the Mobile x Mobility Fusion Joint Innovative Lab (abbreviated as M Lab) to focus on research and development in areas such as bidirectional synchronization between smartphones and smart cars, integration of user data inside the vehicle, and seamless connection of intelligent applications.

The goal of the collaboration is to create a seamless and smooth digital mobility experience for consumers. The joint lab will work on developing new software and hardware solutions that will enable smartphones and smart cars to communicate with each other more effectively.

This will allow users to control their vehicles remotely, access vehicle data and services from their smartphones, and enjoy a more personalized and convenient driving experience.

The partnership is also aimed at helping CARIAD further enhance its independent R&D capabilities in the field of smart connectivity and better integrate its innovations into the Chinese local digital ecosystem. Vivo’s in-car system has already covered 160 million smartphone users in China, giving CARIAD access to a large and growing user base.

Volkswagen Group has opted to delay the decision on its fourth battery cell factory, citing a less than expected demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe. CEO Oliver Blume expressed that, given the slow growth of the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) market in Europe, there is currently no justified business reason to proceed with deciding on additional locations.

The company stopped looking for potential sites in Europe

Previously, the company had paused its decision-making process regarding potential sites in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. The decision was postponed by a year, and there was no urgency shown earlier this year in making a choice.

A recent meeting between Blume and Czech officials did not seem to result in any progress. The Czech Republic had proposed a site for the battery gigafactory, but with Volkswagen’s indecision, the country’s Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, announced that they could not wait any longer. The proposed site will be offered to other potential investors.

This move by Volkswagen is in contrast to its initial plan to open six battery gigafactories in Europe by 2030 through its PowerCo battery subsidiary. Locations already selected for these gigafactories include Salzgitter, Germany; Valencia, Spain; and St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. The Salzgitter and Valencia sites are expected to become operational in 2025 and 2026, respectively, with the Ontario site projected to open in 2027.

Interestingly, Europe is Volkswagen’s largest EV market, contributing to over 60% of its global EV sales. However, the company’s EV orders in Europe have seen a significant drop, with CFO Arno Antlitz revealing a 50% decline from 300,000 last year to 150,000 this year.

It’s worth noting that Volkswagen is not alone in its decision to postpone EV-related plans. Several global automakers, including Ford and General Motors, have also delayed their EV battery production and model launches, while Toyota has revised its EV sales expectations for the current fiscal year.

This move is particularly eyebrow-raising as the company had transitioned its Zwickau plant entirely to electric vehicle (EV) production. The factory, originally designed for a full three-shift production cycle to output approximately 330,000 vehicles annually, could muster only 218,000 in 2022. Volkswagen’s strategy seems to be misaligned with market demands, despite the general upswing in the all-electric market both in Europe and globally.

The immediate consequence has led to talk of job cuts and even discontinuing the third shift at the Zwickau plant by 2024. The company now finds itself in negotiations for a new production agreement with its Zwickau workers, aiming to come up with a plan that ensures the “economic viability” of the production site while taking into account the current market scenario.

This situation raises questions about consumer preferences in the growing electric car market. Why is there a lukewarm response to compact electric hatchbacks when the entire electric vehicle space is heating up? It begs the question whether car buyers are still tied to traditional vehicle types, even as they venture into electric territory. Are compact EVs losing their spark even before catching fire?

What’s also noteworthy is that production for the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5, along with the Audi Q4 e-tron variants, will continue as usual, suggesting that perhaps the European consumer is still more inclined towards larger, more robust electric vehicles. It’s a puzzle that Volkswagen, and perhaps other automakers, will need to solve sooner than later.

While production is set to resume on October 16, it’s clear that temporary production cuts are merely a band-aid for a more complex issue. The automotive giant will have to think long and hard about what European consumers really want in an electric car.

The two companies plan to collaborate to expand electric bicycle leasing in Europe and the United States. The leasing service will both cover employees and commercial customers in both regions.

The deal has seen Volkswagen Financial Services acquire a 49% stake in Pon’s Bike Mobility Services (BMS). Pon’s bike leasing company is operational in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and the US. The BMS brand has quietly established itself as one of the biggest bike-sharing companies in the industry.

BMS is reported to provide bikes for over 600,000 employees in 65,000 companies. The majority of the bikes on offer at BMS (90%) are electric bikes, which are appealing to a growing audience. These bikes are serviced by a rich network of up to 8,000 dealers.

The Volkswagen-Pon partnership is expected to tap from the opportunities in the US market. BMS recently opened its first US office and some large corporations have signed onto the bike-sharing model. The new partnership is not the first time both companies have collaborated. Volkswagen and Pon’s engagements span over eight decades. Pon Holdings is the largest importer of the Volkswagen Group in the Netherlands.

CEO Carsten Intra of VW Commercial Vehicles shared insights at the annual press conference in March. “We’re looking to broaden our horizon with our camping models, delivering that unique California sensation. This includes not only digital enhancements for our Cali Community but also a range of new services post-purchase, and of course, our new California show car built on the Multivan.”

In addition to this, there’s a buzz around the anticipated 2025 launch of a California version of the ID. Buzz, Volkswagen’s electric camper. While specific details are under wraps, the expectations are high, with features like a cozy sleeping area and a compact kitchen.

The two BEVs are expected to start production in 2026. Apart from just building new cars, the partnership explores potential strategic cooperation in other areas as well. For the agreement, XPENG and Volkswagen entered into a share purchase agreement, which will be approximately 700 million US Dollars. One of the most significant contributors to this growth is the plug-in electric car segment, which is expanding rapidly. However, the market is witnessing a clear division between Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).

c The BEVs, in particular, are leading the charge, experiencing an impressive 64 percent surge with 52,988 new registrations, capturing a solid 18.9 percent market share. Meanwhile, PHEVs faced a downturn, dropping 39 percent to 15,930 units, and securing a 5.7 percent market share.

Looking at the cumulative registrations for the year so far, BEVs recorded 220,244 units, representing a significant 32 percent year-over-year growth and 15.8 percent market share. However, PHEVs faced a sharp 43 percent decline, with 79,065 units registered, resulting in a similar 5.7 percent market share. A notable policy shift in 2023 affected the PHEV market as they are no longer eligible for incentives, impacting their sales and market appeal.

Volkswagen emerged as the frontrunner in the plug-in electric car segment and the BEV category, closely followed by Tesla. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz maintained its lead in the PHEV category.

The best-selling electric car model in June and year-to-date was the Tesla Model Y, with 6,098 new registrations in June and a total of 27,825 registrations so far. The Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 duo performed well in June but lagged behind in the year-to-date rankings. As the industry embraces this shift, electric vehicles are all set to dominate the future of transportation in the country and beyond. It’s just a matter of how quickly this revolution takes over.

The CEO pointed out that many EV startups are struggling financially, leading some to exit the market or seek new capital investment urgently. In light of these challenges, Brandstaetter emphasized the need for consolidation within the industry.

Brandstaetter specifically criticized the discounting strategies employed by EV manufacturers in China, citing potential harm to consumer interests. He cautioned against deep price cuts and highlighted the potential consequences, such as reduced support and services for retired brands or diminished resale value for consumers.

In contrast to some competitors, Brandstaetter asserted that Volkswagen Group would prioritize profitability over pursuing sales and growth at any cost. In a move that could further unify charging standards for electric vehicles in North America, Volkswagen is reportedly in talks with Tesla to adopt its North America Charging Standard (NACS) technology.

It’s noteworthy that the charging network unit of the German carmaker, Electrify America, which plans to expand its network to 1,700 stations by 2025, has already agreed to adopt the NACS port.

For those who are unaware, NACS is a proprietary charging connector developed by Tesla and is currently used on the company’s Supercharger network, which is the largest fast-charging network in North America, available at more than 12,000 locations across the continent.

It is a single-port charging system that has support for both AC and DC charging. Compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, the NACS connector is about half the size and twice as powerful.

The development comes days after Volvo announced that it would adopt NACS for its electric vehicles in the North American market. If the deal with Volkswagen goes through, it will be a boost for Tesla, which has been criticized for its closed charging system, making it difficult for other automakers to integrate their vehicles with the Supercharger network.

As of now, it’s not clear when Volkswagen and Tesla will reach an agreement on NACS, but the engagement in talks between these companies is a positive sign for the unification of charging standards.

Volkswagen is making changes to improve its profitability and cash flow. The company is focusing on its strategic alignments and launching performance programs at all brands. They are also considering launching a new electric car called the ID.1, which would be priced around €17,000. The ID.1 would use a new bespoke electric platform that will be used for similar models from sibling brands Cupra and Skoda.

A new report indicates that German carmaker Volkswagen is in talks with Huawei for a possible acquisition of the tech company’s autonomous vehicle unit. The autonomous driving unit of Huawei is a fast-evolving enterprise that draws massively from Huawei’s rich vein of technology and proprietary products in the autonomous driving evolution. The deal is expected to be worth several billions of Euros, sources say.

Although Huawei was mum on the matter, this could be a win-win situation for both companies, as Huawei continues to grapple with the harsh US sanction regime that has heavily limited its capacity as a global player. The sanction regime had led the company to diversify its operations, leading to the setting up of a raft of businesses dealing in diverse products. Volkswagen China has also not made any formal statement concerning the news.

Since 2019 when Huawei created the autonomous driving unit, it has grown rapidly, tapping from the rich resource of technology available from Huawei, although there had been speculation that Huawei may develop its autonomous vehicle. However, Huawei’s goal is to be a component supplier for different car brands.

Volkswagen had also been pursuing electric vehicle dominance with some of the latest partnerships it had entered. The new direction in pursuit of dominance in the autonomous driving space seems to be part of the strategic goals of the German automaker. China remains a fertile business ground for Volkswagen. Indeed, it was the company’s largest market in 2020 and the outlook remains bright, moving forward. And the pace of development of autonomous driving solutions has been quite rapid. The EV world has been abuzz with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric minibus which is scheduled for launch on March 9, 2022. The latest official teaser from Volkswagen further illuminates the exciting ID. Buzz minibus, and primes it for a rapturous debut on March 9. Volkswagen has released an official video showing the new electric minibus driving out of an assembly plant in Hannover, Germany.

The ID. Buzz was developed and manufactured by Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle arm Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge and two camouflaged units of the electric minibus were shown in the video driving out of the Hannover assembly facility. It has been five years of progress and activity since Volkswagen unveiled its electric minibus plans in 2017. The company has been able to meet its 2022 target set for the ID. Buzz which the new face of its zero-emissions policy for its minibus lineup.

There had been several teasers relating to different aspects of the design and features of the ID. Buzz, and piecing these renders and videos together reflect a very impressive design and feature-laden electric minibus with great potential and implications in the industry. Volkswagen had also confirmed through its CEO the official launch of the ID. Buzz was scheduled for March 9, and the new video teaser further serves to increase the hype leading to the launch of the ID. Buzz. The official video shows the buses covered in rainbow zebra stripes and a tweet from Volkswagen also indicated that the ID. Buzz was on its way to Spain for its scheduled launch in March. It will be preceded by a covered drive for journalists in Barcelona this week.

As per CEO Herbert Diess, the Cupertino based giant and its upcoming self driving car will not overtake the 2 trillion US Dollars automobile industry overnight. While Apple has yet to confirm that it is actually working on an automotive, Diess believes that the rumors and reports are still “logical.” The iPhone maker already has expertise in battery technology, software, and design.

Furthermore, the OEM can even effectively utilize its expertise in these areas to create an automobile, as per the Volkswagen CEO. The automobile giant is one of the largest car manufacturer’s in the world an Europe and is based in Germany. It has a significant standing in the industry as well. But, the official is not concerned over the appearance of Apple in the market, and believes that it won’t hamper its market standing.

For those unaware, the Apple Car has recently been widely reported to have been in the works. Although, the company’s current supply chain is not positioned around automobiles. Volkswagen and Microsoft had already established a partnership which saw the carmaker deploy Microsoft’s cloud technology for connected cars. Volkswagen is merely expanding Microsoft’s cloud technology deployment to fully autonomous vehicles. Using Microsoft’s Azure Cloud computing platform, the carmaker hopes to develop an Automated Driving Platform (ADP) that would be the fulcrum of further development in the area of autonomous driving systems.

Microsoft Azure is the well-developed and powerful cloud computing arm of Microsoft. The arm offers an array of services and solutions that are increasingly becoming more effective as many organizations and businesses migrate their critical resources to the cloud for greater security, speed, and overall versatility.

Volkswagen had realized the huge data requirements needed for the development of its autonomous vehicle systems under the framework of the Autonomous Driving Platform, and with this partnership with Microsoft, the company would be able to speed up the development cycle of the autonomous driving systems from months to weeks, deploying the huge computing and data capabilities of Microsoft’s cloud technology.

An increasing number of carmakers who are now adding connected and autonomous vehicles into their production profile have realized the important role of tech companies in developing autonomous systems.
