Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light with a mammoth 60 years life cycle launched

Dyson has announced the Solarcycle Morph Desk Light with a lifespan of up to 60 years. The light is an improved version of the Solarcycle task light released in 2019. It tracks natural daylight and morphs the kind of light it delivers depending on the time of the day. There are four modes in the Solarcycle Morph – Indirect, task, feature, and ambient. The light is designed to eliminate low light, flicker, and glare which can cause eye strain and visual fatigue.

Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light

The Dyson Solarcycle Morph desk light adjusts the light depending on the user’s age, mood, task, and the light outside. The indirect light mode sees the light’s head rotate 360 degrees to bounce light off a floor or surface. The task light shoots a pool of high-intensity light to help you get your task fully illuminated. The feature light is applied when you desire a spotlight on a small surface or material. The Ambient light sends the light down a pole stand for illumination. The MyDyson mobile app allows the user to toggle between the different light modes.

Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light

The Solarcycle Morph is a desk light and also has a floor stand in some markets. The 60-year lifespan of the Dyson Solarcycle Morph is interesting. Dyson says its heat pipe technology draws heat away from the LEDs and delivers energy-free cooling. This design, according to the company is at the heart of the 60-year lifespan for the light. The projected lifespan is however based on an average daily usage of 8 hours for the Solarcycle Morph.

The Dyson Solarcycle Morph is priced at $899 (Amazon) which is on the premium end of the price spectrum. The light is expected to arrive in Australia soon and will also berth in other markets.

Moss Air table-top air purifier and humidifier unveiled as the world’s first Terrarium

The Moss Air tabletop air purifier has been announced. The device is the world’s first Terrarium and uses living moss to purify the air we breathe while also working as a humidifier. The moss plant is tiny but incredibly effective in cleansing the air of toxins, eliminating dust particles, and increasing the air’s oxygen concentration.

Moss Air

Nearly 30% of atmospheric oxygen is claimed to come from the moss and it is called nature’s greatest asset. The moss is a small, non-vascular plant that is found in damp and shady environments. The Moss Air purifier/ humidifier combines nature and technology into a small device that is also visually charming and innovative. Its front features a living moss wall that constantly cleanses the ambient air by trapping toxins, eliminating dust particles, and enriching it with oxygen.

A water chamber is located behind the wall and this feeds the humidifier. The humidifier converts the air into a delicate mist, creating a natural hourglass. An outlet at the top of the device is the exit point for the humidified air. You can either keep the outlet open or close according to your humidification needs.

The Moss Air is unlike most traditional air purifiers that use HEPA filters, activated charcoal blocks, and UV chambers for the purification process. It adopts a moss filter, made up of living plants that can survive without being watered for months. The moss sustains itself, like a terrarium that can stay active for longer periods without human intervention. The excellent oxygen production capability of moss is another advantage of Moss Air. The moss plant also lends you to have a feel of the outdoors inside your living space.

Moss Air

The magnetic ball at the top of the Moss Air can be used as a mechanism for mode switching. You simply roll the magnetic ball across the top of the device to open and close the walls. The Moss Air features the Terranium and Humidifier modes. In the Terrarium mode, the misted breeze keeps the moss alive without any external effort. The moss can survive up to 6 months without being watered.

The Moss Air has a 400ml refillable water chamber. The water in the chamber can last for up to 10 hours while a paper filter helps purify the water before being converted into a vapor. The paper filter can last up to 6 months before being replaced depending on the quality of water placed in the chamber.

The moss panel of the Moss Air can be replaced and swapped with a new moss panel. The gadget can run for up to 8 hours, thanks to its built-in battery. The device can be recharged via its USB-C port. The Moss Air has a starting price of $79 via Indiegogo, with more than $569,000 already raised.

The Global Smartphone Market’s Mass Extinction: 500 Local Smartphone Brands Disappeared in 6 Years

If you’re a regular Gizmochina reader, you might have noticed that we often mention how fierce the competition is in the smartphone market. Yet, many of you probably think we’re mainly talking about the rivalry between tech giants like Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, and might not take our words too seriously. However, a study by Counterpoint reveals the intensity of this competition. According to the published report, nearly 500 brands exited the smartphone market from 2017 to 2023. Here are the details…

Local Brands Vanish as Global Giants Dominate Smartphone Market

If you asked any of you to name companies competing in the global smartphone market, you’d probably give us a list of 10-20 brands, mostly consisting of major manufacturers. However, the global smartphone market is a much more fierce battlefield than you might think. Today, around 250 manufacturers worldwide are competing for a share of this market. This number was once much higher. Not so long ago, in 2017, there were over 700 brands vying for consumer attention, and within a six year, 65% of them exited the market.

Of course, there are many reasons for this decline, and some aren’t as bad as you might think. First, let’s consider why there were so many manufacturers at one time. The ever-increasing popularity of smartphones and the steadily growing numbers each quarter prompted many local and global companies to try their luck in this market.

I’m sure that no matter which country you read this from, a few manufacturers who normally did something else but at some point released their own Android phone will come to mind. In fact, these local smartphone brands were once hailed as titans in their own regions. However, they have been the main casualties in this market evolution.

Unfortunately, the rise of global brands and their expansion into more markets, coupled with their ability to produce better phones, has made it harder for local producers. Moreover, the sheer size of these global tech giants has allowed them to offer models with a higher price-to-performance ratio.

As a result, local brands which once dominated their markets have seen their market share decline, or have even exited the market entirely. Additionally, these local manufacturers, already lagging in advertising, have fallen further behind due to the absence of celebrity brand ambassadors and significant marketing events.

In the process we discussed, numerous reasons stood in the way of companies’ success, with the final blow coming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though there was an increased global demand for technology products and manufacturers struggled to meet this demand, disruptions in the supply chain and other economic issues impacted smaller producers even more.

As a result, 65% of brands that were producing their own smartphones in 2017 have now exited the market. This decline isn’t solely due to a crisis, especially considering there are still over 250 manufacturers. However, to protect consumers, competition shouldn’t be compromised, and the number of brands should not decrease much further.

End of the TV Box Era but Smart TV Sales Surge: Xiaomi Tops, Samsung Follows

The smart TV market continues to grow. Once a technology that only offered a few low-resolution live channels, smart TVs are now the central entertainment hub in many homes, especially thanks to streaming services. But with so many brands and models to choose from, it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. Here are the details…

India Smart TV Market Analysis for 1H 2023: Xiaomi Tops, Samsung Follows Closely

The popularity of smart televisions is increasing day by day. Especially with decreasing costs, many people these days prefer to buy a genuinely affordable smart TV rather than purchasing a non-smart TV and making it smart using a streaming tv box. A recent report from IDC confirms this trend. According to the report, a total of 4.5 million smart televisions were sold in India in the first half of 2023. This represents an 8% growth compared to the same period last year.

Xiaomi TV box and TV market numbers

The decreasing costs had a positive impact, especially on large screen sales. The market share for the 55-inch screen size segment increased from 9% to 12% year over year. This led to a 35% year-on-year growth in the USD$400+ price segment. Users also paid attention to technical features that distinguished a model, such as storage space, HDR, and Dolby certification when making a choice. So, considering all these factors like price and features, who became the leader in India’s smartphone market?

Of course, the top spot hasn’t changed. Xiaomi continued to lead the Indian smart TV market in the first half of 2023 with a 14% share, up from 11% in 2022. Especially when we look at more affordable models, we see that Xiaomi is the undisputed leader in the HD and FHD segment with a 25% share. Xiaomi holds the top spot, followed by Samsung at 13%.

However, don’t be surprised by this second place. As you know, leading the market with premium products is much more advantageous both in terms of brand perception and profitability. Samsung owns 25% of the 4K market and more than 90% of the 8K market.

LG settled in third place with a 12% market share. TCL took fourth place with 8%, while OnePlus once again proved its success in India by securing a 7% market share. The company’s affordable smart TV series, Y1 and Y1S, played a significant role in this achievement, and it is anticipated that their market share will increase in the future.

Thailand awaits $5 Billion investment boost from Tech Titans

In a bid to rejuvenate its sluggish economy, Thailand is anticipating a substantial investment injection of at least $5 billion from tech giants Tesla, Google, and Microsoft, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This announcement follows Srettha’s recent discussions with top executives from these companies during his attendance at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Tesla, renowned for its pioneering electric vehicles (EVs), is mulling over the establishment of an EV manufacturing facility within Thailand’s borders. Meanwhile, both Microsoft and Google are exploring the prospect of setting up data centers in the nation. While Prime Minister Srettha did not specify whether the projected $5 billion was a collective investment or individual commitment from each corporation, the potential inflow of funds holds immense promise for Thailand’s economic revival.

Foreign investment could not come at a more critical time for Thailand, as the country grapples with an economic growth forecast of 2.8% for the year, a figure that has been downgraded due to declining exports. Srettha’s proactive efforts to attract these tech giants reflect Thailand’s determination to retain its status as Asia’s fourth-largest automobile assembly hub. To this end, the country has been extending incentives to EV and battery manufacturers, along with tax reductions for local EV purchasers.

As of now, neither Tesla, Google, nor Microsoft have provided official responses to the investment proposition. Nevertheless, if this multimillion-dollar commitment materializes, it could provide a significant boost to Thailand’s economic fortunes, potentially transforming the nation into a technology and automotive powerhouse.

iFixit teardown reveals slightly larger battery in Apple Watch Ultra 2, no changes in Series 9

The iPhone 15’s durability and teardown are getting a lot of attention, but let’s not forget about the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Watch Series 9, which were also launched alongside it. Just like iPhones, I was curious to see what changes Apple made inside the new watches, especially to enable the new-hyped “Double Tap” feature.

Thankfully, iFixit has released teardowns of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9, so we can see what’s new and different from their predecessors.

The most notable change in the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a slightly larger battery. It has a 564mAh battery, which is 4% bigger than the original Ultra’s 542mAh battery. Despite the slight increase in size, Apple is claiming that the new watch has the same 36-hour battery life as the original model.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 teardown
Apple Watch Ultra 2 Teardown / Image: ifixit

Anyway, another change that was seen is the new S9 SiP chip, which is Apple’s latest SoC for smartwatches. This is expected, as it is a generational upgrade. But besides this, there are no other visible changes in terms of hardware components in the Ultra 2, meaning it is largely similar to the first-gen Watch Ultra.

Like the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Watch Series 9 is very similar to its predecessor. The only visible change is a new “spongy ring of foam” in the rear panel of the watch, which replaces the individual pieces used in earlier models. But this isn’t anything of note.

Despite the similarities, iFixit says that the 2023 Apple Watch is “loads nicer” to disassemble than earlier models, with particular improvements noted for adhesive and cable management.

Apple Watch Series 9 Teardown / Image: ifixit

iFixit also criticizes Apple for promoting the Double Tap feature as a new innovation, when it is simply a duplicate of existing accessibility features and is not available at launch. They also point out that it does not require any new hardware. The criticism was made in the context of an AppleInsider video about using Double Tap on existing Apple Watch models. You can watch that video here

All in all, iFixit’s teardowns of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9 didn’t reveal any major surprises. I was particularly interested to see if there was any hardware to support the Double Tap feature, but it appears to be a software-only implementation.

Despite this, the new smartwatches are still a solid offering and may be a good option for consumers and businesses looking for a new smartwatch with good performance, features, and battery life.

Nissan Reveals a New Concept Electric Car that Brings Together Gaming and Practical Driving

Nissan has revealed a new concept car called Concept 20-23, celebrating 20 years of its design studio in London. This isn’t just another electric vehicle (EV); it’s a blend of Formula E racing, online gaming, and practical city driving.

This car won’t mean much, but it might lay down the groundwork for future Nissan EVs

Designed by young talent at Nissan Design Europe, the car aims to be something people would want to drive in city streets, specifically London. It’s got a three-door hatchback design with special features to improve how it moves through the air. For instance, the deep skirts at the front and back guide air to cool the brakes, making the car more efficient. That’s pretty cool.

Nissan Electric Concept

From the side, the car shows off large wheels tucked into bulging arches. These arches have special vents to help reduce wind resistance, again aiming for efficiency. The car’s interior keeps things simple, featuring just two screens that show important info.

According to Nissan’s Senior VP for global design, Alfonso Albaisa, the Concept 20-23 is shaped by the world of online racing. This fresh approach aims to connect modern city life with the thrill of online gaming, all while keeping emissions at zero.

Right now, Nissan hasn’t shared details about the car’s electric system or what they plan to do with this concept in the long run. But it’s clear that it will influence future Nissan EVs, offering a blend of sporty design and practical features for city driving.

Indian Two-Wheeler Company TVS Launches First Electric Scooter in Colombia

Indian motorcycle giant TVS has expanded its global footprint by launching the TVS X electric scooter in Colombia, only a month after its Indian debut. The scooter’s arrival could be a turning point for the Latin American country, where electric two-wheelers are still a rarity.

The scooter boasts a range of about 87.5 miles (~141 kilometers) on a single charge

Auteco, the renowned Colombian motorcycle distributor, will manage TVS X sales in the country. The distributor is already popular for offering affordable and efficient small-displacement vehicles, and the TVS X aims to fit right into this lineup. This move aligns with TVS’s global aspirations, as articulated by Sudarshan Venu, who promises a “redefined mobility experience” via the X model.

TVS

One of the standout features of the TVS X is its performance. Comparable to a 150cc internal combustion scooter, the electric powerhouse offers 11 kilowatts, roughly equal to 14.3 horsepower. It promises rapid acceleration and a top speed of 65 mph. The scooter’s three unique ride modes—Xealth, Xtride, and Xonic—add a level of customization not commonly seen in electric two-wheelers in the region. Fast-charging tech and a sturdy 4.44 kilowatt-hour battery make it even more appealing, boasting a range of up to 87.5 miles.

In terms of innovation, the TVS X comes with a RAM air intake system. This helps cool the electric motor and allows for sustained peak performance. It seems like TVS has aimed to address the core needs of Colombian commuters—efficiency, reliability, and affordability—all while providing a sustainable alternative to traditional vehicles.

Although pricing details for Colombia are still under wraps, the Indian price tag is set at approximately $3,030 USD. As TVS takes a bold step in making electric vehicles more accessible in Colombia, it could very well pave the way for a greener transportation future in Latin America.

BYD Dolphin Enters the Mexican Market, but its Pricing may Bother Some

The eagerly awaited BYD Dolphin has finally swum its way to Mexico, offering North Americans a glimpse of a possible budget-friendly EV future. Although originally priced at a pocket-friendly $16,000 in its home country China, the hatchback’s debut in Mexico sees it marked up to roughly $31,000, nearly double its original cost.

Shipping and Import Costs come together for this hefty ordeal

So why the price hike? Surprisingly, the Dolphin sold in Mexico isn’t a different variant; it’s identical to the one available in China. This suggests that shipping and import costs are playing a big role in the steep increase. Meanwhile, Europe gets a slightly different version of the Dolphin, re-engineered to meet local safety standards, yet priced similarly to the Mexican offering.

BYD

The car packs a 94-horsepower electric motor and boasts an impressive range of 251 miles on a full charge. With its eco-friendly credentials and substantial range, the Dolphin could become a game-changer in the affordable EV segment—provided the price barrier can be overcome.

This is particularly relevant for the United States, where budget EV options are scant. The arrival of the Dolphin in Mexico might just signal that this budget-friendly electric hatchback could soon reach U.S. shores. But will it maintain its allure if the price tag almost doubles upon arrival? That remains the million-dollar—or perhaps, the $31,000—question.

As the fourth electric vehicle from BYD to be introduced in Mexico, the Dolphin adds to a growing list that includes the Han sedan, Tang SUV, and Yuan Plus crossover. Globally, half a million units have been produced since its 2021 launch, and it’s already available in markets like Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, and recently, Japan.

The real test now is whether the Dolphin can swim upstream against its pricier competition and provide an affordable electric option for North Americans. After all, if it succeeds, it could break down a major barrier to EV adoption and give budget-conscious consumers a genuinely viable choice.

MySmartPrice, citing industry sources, claims Samsung Galaxy S23 FE starts at $599 in the States.
