Samsung and LG propose Micro Lens Array OLED displays for iPhone 16

Samsung Display has been the exclusive supplier of OLED panels for all high-end iPhones since the iPhone X. This will continue to be the case next year as well. However, there have been reports that Samsung Display and LG Display have proposed to Apple to use OLED displays with Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology for iPhone 16 models.

iPhone 16 micro lens array MLA OLED Display

What is Micro Lens Array (MLA) display technology?

Micro Lens Array (MLA) is a display technology that uses microscopic lenses to improve the brightness and power efficiency of OLED displays. The lenses are placed between the glass and the OLED panel, and they help to redirect the light from the panel that would normally be lost to internal reflection. This results in a brighter display with less power consumption.

However, there is also a trade-off to this technology. MLA can also narrow the viewing angle of OLED displays. This is because the micro-lens inside the display focus the light in a specific direction, which can make it difficult to see the display from certain angles.

Micro Lens Array (MLA) display on iPhone 16 series?

According to a report from TheElec, there are two reasons why Samsung Display and LG Display have proposed to Apple to use MLA technology for the iPhone 16 series.

First, the OLED material sets that the two companies are developing may not yet meet Apple’s standards. MLA technology can help to improve the brightness of the display, even if the OLED material sets are not yet as efficient as Apple would like.

The second reason is that MLA technology could help Samsung Display and LG Display widen the gap with BOE, their competitors in China. BOE is a latecomer to the OLED market and is struggling to produce OLED panels that meet Apple’s requirements. If Apple adopts MLA technology for the iPhone 16 series and BOE is unable to adopt the technology, it will give Samsung and LG Display a significant advantage. And BOE will be left behind.

Apple’s take?

Apple’s decision of whether to adopt MLA technology for the iPhone 16 series depends on whether the efficiency of the OLED material set can be improved by the time mass production begins in the second half of 2024.

If the amount of light sent to the front of the panel can be at least maintained at a reduced power consumption rate without narrowing the viewing angle, then MLA implementation may be considered worthwhile. However, this depends on the performance of the OLED material set, which is said to be different for the two domestic panel companies.

MLA is still a new display technology that has been incorporated into some Samsung and LG devices. Samsung has used MLA in its own S-Ultra smartphone models, while LG has used it for some OLED TVs.

But in the case of Apple, the brand has requested that the two domestic panel companies focus on improving the efficiency of the OLED material set in response to the MLA application proposal for iPhone 16 OLED panels. It is expected that it will take time for a final decision to be made.

Dutch export controls trigger countdown for ASML’s advanced Chip Tools to China

ASML Holding NV, the world’s premier lithography systems manufacturer, is facing a significant setback in its exports to China due to new export control rules imposed by the Dutch government. These rules, effective from September 1, have far-reaching implications for the semiconductor industry and global technological competition.

Under these regulations, ASML now requires a license from the Netherlands government to export equipment capable of producing sub-5nm chips. ASML’s advanced deep ultraviolet lithography (DUV) tools, vital for manufacturing the latest generation of microchips, are caught in the crosshairs of these restrictions.

One of ASML’s most advanced DUV systems, the Twinscan NXT:2000i, which can create chips at the 5-nanometer process or more advanced, faces an imminent export deadline. Chinese chip manufacturers, aware of the impending restrictions, have been rushing to import these critical ASML tools before the end of 2023.

The Dutch government’s move aligns with the United States and Japan and is seen as an effort to curtail the export of specific ASML machine models to China. While the rules do not explicitly mention China, they effectively block ASML from shipping its DUV systems there without obtaining a government license.

ASML has been contending with export restrictions to China since 2019 when it was barred from selling extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines. However, the company had still been able to export DUV systems until this year, under pressure from the United States.

Starting January 1, 2024, ASML will no longer be able to ship its most advanced immersion DUV lithography system, the Twinscan 2000 series, to China. This development has prompted Chinese chip foundries to expedite their ASML tool imports, with approval from The Hague, within the remaining four months.

ASML, Europe’s largest technology firm by valuation, remains cautiously optimistic about its annual sales despite these challenges. They anticipate fulfilling existing orders until the end of this year, mitigating the potential impact on their financial performance.

The global semiconductor landscape is evolving rapidly, with these export restrictions amplifying the technological competition between nations. China’s race to secure advanced chip-making tools underscores the critical role ASML plays in the semiconductor supply chain. The impact of these developments on global technology dynamics will undoubtedly be closely monitored in the months ahead.

Xiaomi Mix Flip moniker confirmed via IMEI; a worthy Galaxy Z Flip 5 competitor on the way?

Xiaomi launched the Mix Fold 3 last month as the thinnest book-style foldable yet. However, it was soon revealed that the handset, like its predecessors, wouldn’t make it to the global market. That’s definitely a bummer, but the company is also said to have a flip phone in the works, which should launch next year in China and maybe in the outside world as well. With high expectations, we are now hearing that the Xiaomi clamshell foldable will be called the Xiaomi Mix Flip, of course.

Xiaomi Mix Flip IMEI

ITHome has spotted the alleged Xiaomi vertical foldable on the IMEI database with model number 2311BPN23C. The device is listed with the moniker “Mix Flip”, confirming the previous rumors. There are no other interesting details to be found in the listing. While there’s no official confirmation from the brand, a leaker recently claimed the Mix Flip is launching sometime next year alongside the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4.

Previously, a GSMChina report shared design renders of the upcoming flip phone. We couldn’t help but point out that the camera is a reminder of the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, although it is much smaller in the case of Mix Flip. There are three camera sensors with LED flash. One of the cameras is said to offer 3X telephoto zoom.

Xiaomi Mix flip 3 renders

The Xiaomi Mix Flip could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and feature a sleek design. We would expect it to be thin and light because that’s what Xiaomi likes to do with its foldables. In any case, take these early leaks with a pinch of salt. We are still many months away from the official launch, and a lot is bound to change. Stay tuned for updates.

Apple’s foldable screen tech: New patent shows slight bend for drop safety

Apple, one of the few major smartphone manufacturers yet to launch a foldable screen device, has recently been associated with a notable patent. According to CNMO, on September 5th, the Tianyancha App revealed Apple Inc.’s new patent titled “Electronic Device with Durable Foldable Display”.

Safety First: How the Screen Protects Itself Upon Impact

The unique aspect of this patent is its safety feature: the screen slightly folds upon impact or vibrations. This ensures that when the device is dropped, the display won’t directly hit a hard surface, thus increasing its durability. The design focuses on a bending axis around which the screen folds and the display panel is equipped with a pixel array that projects images through the display cover layer.

A pivotal part of this technology is the display cover layer, which is crafted from a glass layer. This layer has a distinctive recess that extends along the bending axis. This recess creates a flexible, thinner portion in the glass layer, permitting it to fold or bend around the axis. For added impact resistance, the corners and edges of this cover layer have been thickened.

foldable iPhone concept
Concept iPhone Fold

The inclusion of display hinges and other structural adjustments ensures the screen remains flat when fully opened. However, during unforeseen drops or vibrations, it can automatically bend around its axis, offering protection to the screen.

While the revelation of this patent sparks excitement and curiosity among Apple enthusiasts, it’s crucial to remember that this doesn’t guarantee an imminent foldable-screen phone from Apple.

The company also recently filed a patent for a device with a rollable or scrollable display, suggesting that future products such as iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks could feature this innovation. Nevertheless, it undeniably showcases Apple’s advanced R&D pursuits in the realm of foldable screen tech.

DJI is working on a new compact drone called DJI Mini 4 Pro. Most recently, eetail packaging for the DJI Mini 4 Pro has leaked online and revealed some specs. The new drone is expected to be released in September 15. It will be similar to the Mini 3 Pro, but it will have some new features.

One of the biggest upgrades over the Mini 3 Pro is the new 48 MP camera. This is a significant improvement over the 12 MP camera on the previous model, and it will allow users to capture stunning photos and videos with incredible detail. The camera also has an f/1.7 aperture, which will let in more light for better low-light performance.

In addition to the upgraded camera, the Mini 4 Pro also has a number of other impressive features. It has omnidirectional active obstacle sensing, which means it can detect obstacles in all directions. This makes it a safer drone to fly, especially for beginners. The Mini 4 Pro also has a long battery life of 34 minutes, so you can fly for longer without having to worry about running out of power.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro weighs less than 250g, which means it is classified as a micro drone in many countries. This makes it a great option for travelers, as it does not require registration or licensing in many places. The Mini 4 Pro is expected to be released on September 15th, unfortunately, the price is currently unknown.

Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 launched with hybrid switches, 95 hours battery life

The first-gen Logitech G Pro Wireless was a major breakthrough for wireless gaming mice. It was the first to offer latency that matched wired mice, making it a popular choice among professional esports players. The Logitech G Pro X Superlight Wireless launched back in 2020 took things a step further by being even lighter and more portable than the original, while still maintaining the same great performance. Logitech has now launched a new mouse in the Superlight series, the Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2. So let’s talk about it here.

Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 Specifications

This new wireless model has the same comfortable shape as its predecessor, but it has a few key improvements over its predecessor. Logitech has finally replaced the old micro-USB port on its predecessor with the modern USB-C port. This is a more modern and convenient connection type.

The new mouse uses “Lightforce” switches instead of fully mechanical switches. Lightforce switches are a hybrid design that combines the feel of mechanical switches with the speed and durability of optical switches. This should help to reduce the incidence of unintended double-clicks.

Logitech has also improved the battery life of the mice which is now rated at 95 hours per charge, up from 70 hours on Logitech G Pro X Superlight. This is a significant improvement, and it should make the mouse last longer between charges.

You also get a new “Hero 2” sensor which Logitech says offers better tracking performance. The Hero 2 sensor can track at up to 500 inches per second (IPS) and up to 32,000 DPI. It also has a dual array design that helps to improve tracking accuracy when the mouse is lifted or tilted.

Last but not least, the maximum polling rate has been increased from 1,000Hz to 2,000Hz. This means that the mouse can report its position to the computer 2,000 times per second, which can help to improve gaming performance. The Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 goes on sale today at a retail price of $159 from the company’s official site and Amazon

Anbernic RG405V launch: Unisoc Tiger T618 powered Gameboy-like gaming handheld

Anbernic has just launched the new RG405V, which is its latest gaming handheld model. This device features a design that resembles the iconic Gameboy handheld. So let’s have a look at its specs, pricing, and features.

Anbernic RG405V Gaming Handheld

The new RG405V is the second entry in the RG405 series and follows after the RG405M. But unlike the Sony PSP design of the RG405M, the new model appears similar to the Gameboy. This model sports a 4-inch IPS LCD panel that has 640 x 480 pixel resolution. Under the hood, the Anbernic RG405V is equipped with the Unisoc Tiger 618 processor that is paired with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of eMMC flash storage.

Anbernic RG405V Gameboy Gaming Handheld

Notably, the Anbernic RG405V gaming handheld is powered by a 5,500mAh battery pack, which is 1,000mAh larger than the battery on the RG405M. The 22 percent larger battery size is likely possible thanks to its larger housing that has 145 x 105 x 35mm dimensions and weighs 282 grams. On a single full charge, the Anbernic RG405V should last for up to 9 hours, which is also 2 hours longer than the RG405M model.

Notably, the RG405V has hall joysticks, a six gyroscope, and a built-in fan to cool the Unisoc Tiger T618. It is available in multiple variants, which include Wood Grain, Gray, and a Transparent finish. Unfortunately, the Anbernic RG405V won’t feature a MicroSD card slot for memory expansion. This model has a price tag of 129.99 US Dollars. The company is also offering a 128GB and 256GB microSD card slot model for 144.99 US Dollars and 159.99 US Dollars respectively.
