McLaren’s New Approach Involves an Electric Hypercar with Balance, Not Just Power

McLaren is taking a deliberate and measured approach towards the future. The highly anticipated successor to the P1 won’t be arriving until closer to 2030, but when it does, it promises to redefine the McLaren DNA. Unlike other hypercars that focus on jaw-dropping power, McLaren’s forthcoming crown jewel will be an all-electric vehicle (EV), steering clear of a combustion engine. This approach aligns with industry trends, such as Porsche’s decision to replace the 918 Spyder with a pure EV.

McLaren also plans to introduce plug-in Hybrid Models based on V8 Engines

In a conversation with Autocar, McLaren Automotive CEO Michael Leiters emphasized that their approach won’t be about wild power numbers. He stressed that their goal is to control the weight penalty often associated with battery-powered vehicles, saying, “We don’t want to make a car that is 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs) and 2,000 hp.” Leiters further emphasized that the company’s intention is to produce a zero-emission hypercar, similar in weight to the remarkable 750S, which weighs just 1,277 kg (2,815 lbs).

Electric

This innovative direction sets McLaren apart from rivals like Rimac Nevera, Pininfarina Battista, and Lotus Evija, all of which boast power in excess of 1,900 hp and considerably higher weight. Porsche‘s upcoming Mission X is also in the game but is yet to disclose full details.

Though McLaren could design an all-electric P1, internal studies show that customers aren’t demanding EVs just yet. The popularity of models like the 750S demonstrates that internal combustion engines (ICE) are still highly sought after, even as some enthusiasts show interest in pure electric performance cars.

During this pivotal transition period from ICE to EV, McLaren plans to introduce plug-in hybrid models based on a new V8 engine. Positioned above Artura’s V6 PHEV setup, these models will bridge the gap as the company meticulously shapes its electrified future.

In summary, McLaren’s future may lie in electric power, but it won’t be a mad dash for horsepower. Instead, it’ll be a calculated journey towards balanced performance, aligning power and weight to create a vehicle true to the very DNA of McLaren. It’s an approach that underlines innovation without losing sight of what makes McLaren truly distinctive.

Xiaomi 13T Pro camera details leak reveal it will be a tweaked version of the Redmi K60 Ultra

Reports have claimed that the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro will launch on September 1st globally. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Kacper Skrzypek, has appeared today to reveal the camera specifications of the Xiaomi 13T Pro. The leak suggests that the 13T Pro will be a tweaked version of the Redmi K60 Ultra, which debuted yesterday in China.

Xiaomi 13T Pro camera specifications (rumored)

Redmi K60 Ultra
Redmi K60 Ultra

According to the tipster, the Xiaomi 13T Pro will have a 20-megapixel Sony IMX596 camera on the front for selfies and video calls. The Redmi K60 Ultra features the same selfie camera.

The Xiaomi 13T Pro’s rear camera setup will feature a Sony IMX707 50-megapixel primary camera. In comparison, the K60 Ultra has a Sony IMX800 50-megapixel main camera. Instead of the 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras available on the Redmi flagship, the 13T Pro will offer an OmniVision OV13B ultra-wide camera and an OV50D 50-megapixel telephoto camera.

The rest of the specs of the 13T Pro are likely to be the same as those of the Redmi K60 Ultra. Hence, the 13T Pro is expected to feature a 6.67-inch OLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. It will run on the Android 13 operating system and MIUI 14.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi 13T Pro will arrive with the Dimensity 9200 Plus chip, up to 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM, and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. It will house a 5,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging. The 13T Pro is also expected to come with other features, such as a dedicated display chip, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, dual stereo speakers, an X-axis linear motor, and an IP68-rated chassis. As far as design is concerned, it appears could be identical to the K60 Ultra.

Tesla Plans Unique Data Centers for Rising Demands

Tesla, the innovative electric vehicle maker, is eyeing the future with plans to construct “first of its kind data centers,” according to a recent job posting on their careers page. As Tesla delves into areas like full-self driving, artificial intelligence, and robotics, its data needs are practically skyrocketing. This may be the driving force behind the brand’s intention to create dedicated facilities.

Self-owned Data centres can help Tesla evade future clashes with the European Union

Data centres house vast amounts of digital information and essential infrastructure, playing a crucial role in today’s tech-centred world. Tesla’s senior engineering program manager position at the Austin headquarters stressed upon the importance of designing and engineering these centers.

Tesla

Unlike Tesla, most tech giants such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform already rely on data centre requirements. Furthermore, after Tesla CEO Elon Musk‘s takeover of Twitter (now known as X), Tesla began using one of NTT Global Data Centers’ facilities in Sacramento.

Tesla’s expansion into data collection raises some eyebrows, too. Between 2019 and 2022, Tesla employees shared videos recorded by customer cars, sparking data privacy concerns. A whistleblower leak earlier this year only added to the intrigue.

The implications for Tesla could be immense, especially in Europe where the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enforces stringent data protection laws. If found guilty, Tesla might be slapped with billions in fines.

But Tesla’s data needs don’t stop with vehicles alone. The company is also exploring energy storage and virtual power plants. Through the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP), Tesla customers can contribute energy back into the grid during crises, a venture that only further emphasizes the importance of having dedicated data centers in place.

Lamborghini Teases a Potential Upcoming Electric Supercar on Instagram

Lamborghini is giving a sneak peek of something exciting, releasing a teaser image of a new vehicle set to be unveiled on August 18. In a recent Instagram post, the Italian carmaker has promised that “Something new and truly thrilling is about to be unveiled.”

The teaser, however, doesn’t reveal any other key details of the vehicle

This announcement comes on the heels of the company’s statement that it would present an electric vehicle (EV) concept during Monterey Car Week. As August 18 falls within that period, it seems clear that this debut could be our first glimpse at Lamborghini’s new EV.

Electric

The teaser offers an intriguing view of the car’s outline. Its smooth lines and softer edges contrast sharply with the more angular elements that Lamborghini is known for. These design features may suggest a blend of the brand’s classic style with shapes often found in EVs, helping to reduce drag.

Previously described as the “first prototype of our fourth series production car,” this EV concept is something Lamborghini fans have been eagerly waiting for. In July 2023, the company confirmed plans for a 2+2 grand tourer. CEO Stephan Winkelmann emphasized that this vehicle would be “much more daily usable,” a departure from models like the Huracan or new Revuelto, and notably, not an SUV.

The teaser doesn’t give away too much about the vehicle’s size or specific design. Key details, such as whether it will have rear seats like the anticipated production version, remain under wraps.

Mechanically, the EV shares components with other vehicles within the Volkswagen Group. This isn’t a new approach for Lamborghini, as seen with the Urus sharing a platform with the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, and Porsche Cayenne.

Interestingly, Lamborghini hasn’t produced a 2+2 grand tourer since models like the 400 GT 2+2, Islero, Urraco, and Espada were retired in the late 1970s.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Price Bump might annoy Smartphone Manufacturers

Qualcomm is a name synonymous with innovation in the technology industry. Based in San Diego, this company is known for its semiconductors and software, particularly the development and marketing of wireless telecommunications products and services. One of their standout products has been the Snapdragon series of chipsets, widely recognized for their performance and efficiency.

The Dimensity 9300 Chipset is gearing up to compete against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Recently, Qualcomm put its partners, including Samsung, in a challenging position by allegedly charging $160 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This new price point makes it more expensive than Apple’s A16 Bionic. As rumors surround the impending launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, concerns grow that it might be even pricier.

Qualcomm

Switching to TSMC’s 4nm N4P process for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 isn’t a cheap affair. Qualcomm’s prior reliance on Samsung’s foundry for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 led to various drawbacks and criticism. Now, inside sources like Digital Chat Station claim that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be more costly, leaving partners with hard choices.

Faced with increasing costs, some manufacturers may either downgrade to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or turn to MediaTek’s Dimensity range, especially the Dimensity 9300. MediaTek might charge less for its flagship silicon, potentially attracting more business.

Yet, challenging Qualcomm’s market presence is no simple task. The Snapdragon brand carries considerable weight. However, the Dimensity 9300 does present an advantage with its support for faster LPDDR5T RAM and a unique CPU configuration that may outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in some areas, though likely losing in efficiency.

If Qualcomm charges $200 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, brands like Samsung and Xiaomi may still opt for it to provide their customers with top-tier Android smartphone hardware. The decision might dent their margins, but it reflects the complex nature of the competitive landscape.

Telegram Stories feature no longer limited to premium users; now available for everyone

Telegram, a popular instant messaging application and competitor to WhatsApp, released the Stories feature to its premium users last month, and now the feature is available for everyone.

The announcement about the Stories feature being available for everyone on Telegram comes as the company celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Telegram Stories

The Stories feature on Telegram is similar to what other platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram offer. However, unlike other platforms, it has one feature that sets it apart from others; Telegram allows users to edit Stories after posting.

There are some customizable options, including the ability to choose who can see stories, how long they last, and whether or not they can be saved by others. Premium users also have access to additional features, such as the ability to view others’ stories in stealth mode, a permanent view history, and the ability to save stories to their gallery.

Making the announcement, the company said in a blog post, “This was by far the most-requested feature in the history of Telegram – and we’ve spent several months innovating and refining the format. Telegram Stories have all the things you’d expect – and plenty more that have never been done before.”

To use this new feature, users simply have to open the Telegram app and tap on the “Stories” icon located at the bottom bar. From there, they start creating a new story by tapping the “+” icon, and once done, choose who can see them by tapping the “Share” button or setting a timer for how long it will be available for others to see.

How to Build Your Own Foldable: JerryRigEverything Shows You How to Assemble the Honor Magic V2

Honor continues to expand its product range. After separating from Huawei, the company returned to the Google ecosystem. They aim to return to their former glory by producing new models whenever possible. A recent example of this is the Honor Magic V2 introduced in July. This foldable device stands out with its ultra-thin and lightweight design, quickly becoming a favorite in the tech media. The latest video about this device was made by JerryRigEverything. However, this time, the video was different than usual. Here are the details…

JerryRigEverything Assembles Honor Magic V2 in New Video

If you love technology, you’ve probably heard of JerryRigEverything before. We often talk about his videos on Gizmochina. For instance, we recently mentioned his durability test on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Now, he’s back with a video about the Honor Magic V2. Those who’ve watched JerryRigEverything know the sequence of his videos. First, he does a durability test, and if the device passes, he films a teardown video. But this time, things were a bit different.

Honor-Magic-V2

Honor sent the phone in pieces, not as a whole. This saved Zack, the channel owner, a lot of work and changed the usual concept a bit. In the video, as you can see, JerryRigEverything is putting together all the parts of the phone and showing us every step. Nowadays, phones are designed not to be opened to save space and keep water out. This makes it harder to fix and for tech lovers like Zack to see inside the devices we’re curious about. If you’d like, we can stop talking now and let you watch the video in peace.

Xpeng X9 Teased With New Spy Photos, Feature More Traditional Headlights, Sleek New Design

Xpeng is expanding its electric vehicle lineup. Even though the company sees its autonomous-driving technology as its main strength against competitors like Tesla and BYD, it doesn’t forget to introduce products for different needs. The latest one is the Xpeng X9. This vehicle is their top SUV and will be launched in the last quarter of 2023. Even though its release is still some time away, new spy photos show a cleaner design, updated headlights, and more. Here are the details…

Xpeng X9 New Photos Out: A Fresh Look Without the ‘Squinty’ Lights

Xpeng Motors has been teasing its upcoming Xpeng X9 SUV for a few months now, and the latest spy shots reveal some design elements. The upcoming vehicle still has the usual Xpeng design on the front. But, the big change is in the headlights. The X9 will have a more traditional headlight design, with larger, round headlights that are separated by a wider grille.

This new design is much more in line with the rest of the Xpeng lineup, and it should help to make the X9 look more premium. At the back, the X9 has a full-length tail light, matching the front light. The back bumper has a special Xpeng look and fits smoothly with the rest of the car, making it look sleek.

Word is, the X9 might be longer than 5.5 meters and almost as wide as 2.3 meters. He Xiaopeng, the CEO of Xpeng Motors, says the X9 is their way of reaching out to younger buyers. We’re still waiting for more details about what’s under the hood. But with all this buzz, everyone’s excited to see how the X9 will do when it hits the streets.
