Although MediaTek has designed chipsets for various Chromebooks and budget laptops, the company has yet to release processors that can compete with Apple’s silicon. While MediaTek has mainly focused on developing mobile CPUs, recent reports suggest that the company is now aiming to shift its attention toward high-end laptop processors. As per a tipster, MediaTek is working on a new SoC featuring four Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores. This chip is expected to go head-to-head with upcoming offerings such as the Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon.
It could be the next Kompanio chip
According to Digital Chat Station, MediaTek could have a powerful laptop CPU in the development. While the marketing name of the chipset is yet to be known, it is said to feature four Hunter ELP (Cortex-X4) and four Hunter (Cortex-A720) with no efficiency cores (Via Notebookcheck). For the unaware, the Cortex-X4 is a new high-performance core that was announced by Arm in 2022. It is designed to offer up to 30% better performance than the previous generation Cortex-X3 core.
The Chipset could be the next iteration in the Kompanio series that MediaTek has planned for Windows laptops, and it may even come with a raytracing-enabled GPU. If MediaTek is successful in developing this new SoC, it could emerge as a major competitor to the upcoming Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon. The chip would provide a significant performance boost over MediaTek’s dim laptop chipsets, positioning it favorably against the latest chips from Intel and AMD.
However, it is important to note that MediaTek has not yet officially announced this new SoC. It is even possible that the chip does not exist. We hope to learn more in the coming days.
This year’s Google I/O developer conference was filled with interesting announcements, particularly in the AI and imaging department. The search giant even took the stage to announce three new Pixel devices: the Pixel 7a, the Pixel Tablet, and the Pixel Fold. Notably, Big G also announced a new photo format for capturing images, called Ultra HDR. This photo format will be released with Android 14, and lucky for us, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped smartphones are all ready to support it.
Ultra HDR can offer a dynamic range beyond 8-bits
During the I/O 2023, Google introduced Ultra HDR as a new photo format for clicking pictures. The company explains that the format will allow photos to be captured in the backward-compatible JPEG format, but offer a dynamic range beyond 8 bits. This will enable phones to shoot photos with more details in shadows and highlights.
According to Google, Ultra HDR images can be displayed in a variety of ways, from a standard dynamic range (SDR) to a high dynamic range (HDR). The final result is adaptive and depends on the original intent of the user, the capabilities of the display, and the viewing environment. Additionally, images in this format are backward compatible with existing apps. So, it doesn’t matter if an app does not have HDR capabilities, it can still show the image as an SDR JPEG file. This makes it easy to share Ultra HDR images with others, even if their device doesn’t support the format.
This format will be rolled out with Android 14 and Qualcomm has been working with the Android team to make use of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s 18-bit ISP for the Ultra HDR format. As a result, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered phones will be able to support Ultra HDR photo capture as soon as it rolls out.

The application also offers a wide range of adjustment settings, such as Composition, Tracking Sensitivity, and Priority Display Area.
This application enables the remote camera to automatically repeat subtle pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) staging movements commonly performed by operators during the broadcast of events like sports competitions, interviews, TV commercials, and movies. Operators can adjust parameters such as Position Setting to determine the pause duration at each point, Route Setting to determine movement speed, and other operations including Preview and Start, which can be easily configured on the settings screen
Google is making good on its promise to enhance app experiences on large-screen devices, including foldable phones and tablets, with the Android 12L and Android 13 updates. During the recent Google I/O 2023 event, the company revealed that it has optimized over 50 apps for foldables and tablets, and now Gboard joins the list with an exciting new feature.
Gboard’s split keyboard will ease your typing experience on tablets
Last year, Gboard introduced a split keyboard for foldable devices, and now it is making its way to Android tablets. This split keyboard feature divides the keyboard into two equal halves, with an equal number of keys on the left and right sides. By default, the “Split layout to include duplicated keys” option in Settings > Preferences > Layout is enabled, which means certain keys are duplicated on both sides of the split keyboard.
However, users also have the option to disable this setting, which emphasizes the left side in the second and third rows. Switching between the “Standard” and “Split keyboard” options can be easily done using a toolbar tile.
Users have reported encountering this feature on a Galaxy Tab S8 running the Gboard beta version 12.9.21. Previously, Google had rolled out the split keyboard exclusively for foldable devices like the Galaxy Fold and Surface Duo.
It’s worth noting that while the split keyboard feature is now available on tablets, the widely anticipated toolbar redesign, which made its initial appearance in February, has yet to be widely rolled out to users.
The introduction of the Gboard split keyboard on Android tablets offers users increased flexibility and convenience when typing, particularly on larger devices like tablets. With these continuous optimizations, Google aims to enhance the overall user experience on foldable devices and tablets.

Oppo has seemingly cleared out its entire official website for the German market. The company has been facing a rough period in the European market with previous rumors of an eventual exit, and now, the latest move has it wipe out its official German website.
Oppo’s exit from Europe could be right around the corner
For those unaware, despite being one of the largest smartphone manufacturer’s in the world, the BBK Group (umbrella corp that presides over Oppo & OnePlus) might be preparing to withdraw from Europe. One of the first market’s for this exodus would’ve been France and would soon include Germany as well.
Now, ahead of any official announcement, the brand’s official website in Germany has been completely wiped out. As of right now, there is only a single advertisement for the company’s ongoing partnership with YEFA Champions League. There is also a FAQ banner that only answers one question, which is related to its existing Oppo devices in the country. Skyworth continues to expand its product range. The company recently introduced the Coocaa X5 projector and is now grabbing attention with the stylish A7D series wallpaper TVs. After its initial appearance at the AWE 2023 show in April, this new TV model is now available for pre-orders. Here are the details…
Skyworth Transforms Living Spaces with the Ultra-Thin Wallpaper TV 85A7D
The wallpaper TV concept was first introduced a few years ago by manufacturers like Samsung and LG with their premium models. These products, with their extremely thin frames and bodies, look more like a picture or wallpaper on your wall rather than a television. Initially, these TV models were quite expensive, but prices have become more reasonable over time. Skyworth has recently made its 85A7D and a smaller model, the 75A7D, available for pre-order.
The 85A7D is currently retailing for 13,999 Yuan, with its smaller counterpart, the 75A7D, priced at 6,999 Yuan. As their names suggest, the unique selling point of these TVs is their “ultra-thin seamless wall-mounting” design. With its slim 39.9mm body, this TV effortlessly blends with your wall, creating a seamless interface between technology and home decor.
The Skyworth team dedicated significant time and resources to overcome several technical hurdles. These included finding solutions for heat dissipation and mechanical vibration, as well as crafting an innovative module design. The A7D series goes beyond its ultra-thin design, offering Bluetooth speaker functionality. This means that you can connect it to your smartphone and use it as a Bluetooth speaker, with dynamic lyrics displayed right on the screen.
In terms of smart TV performance, the A7D series has a powerful dual-core A55 + dual-core A75 chip, 4+64GB storage, and a smart dimming system. With 144 levels of light zoning (112 for the 75-inch model and 84 for the 64-inch model), a peak brightness of 1000nit, and support for 97% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, the TV promises stunning image quality.
Looking at connectivity options, it comes with a 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 interface that supports a 4K 240Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), and automatic low latency (ALLM). There’s also a USB 3.0 interface for easy connection to other devices. However, whether these features are worth the price is ultimately a decision left to the consumer.

The battery pack only has a 5,200mAh capacity due to its petite size. The product is more of a fashion statement, so it’s fine.
It comes in two versions, one with an attached lightning cable and another with an attached USB Type-C cable for output (up to 20W). Either way, both variants sport a USB Type-C port for input (up to 18W).

MediaTek is set to challenge Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with their upcoming flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9300. Leaks suggest that the Dimensity 9300 will feature a configuration similar to Qualcomm’s offering and is expected to launch in October 2023, following the release of the Dimensity 9200+ in May 2023.
MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will mimic Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Cortex-X4 prime cores
Rumors indicate that the Dimensity 9300 will adopt a 2+4+2 configuration, consisting of two powerful Cortex-X4 cores, four Cortex-A7xx cores, and two Cortex-A5xx cores. However, specific clock speeds and information about the incorporation of Arm’s latest Cortex-A cores are still undisclosed. The details regarding the GPU are also unknown, but it’s reasonable to assume that a successor to the Immortalis G715, such as the Arm Immortalis G720, may be included.
MediaTek seems to be drawing inspiration from Qualcomm’s strategy with the Snapdragon Gen 3. Previous leaks suggested that Qualcomm’s upcoming chipsets would offer different CPU core layouts for two different versions which will include the 2+4+2 and 1+5+2 CPU layout configurations. Both MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Gen 3 will be manufactured on TSMC’s advanced N4P node, placing them on similar technological footing.
One challenge MediaTek may face with the Dimensity 9300 is managing thermal performance. The inclusion of two Cortex-X4 cores is likely to generate additional heat, requiring careful balancing of clock speeds to maintain low power consumption. Furthermore, a microarchitecture redesign may be necessary to effectively distribute workloads among the two Prime cores.
The Dimensity 9300 is expected to make its debut alongside the Vivo X100 series in late 2023, following the pattern set by its predecessor. MediaTek will need to address these technical aspects and compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Gen 3 in order to gain a foothold in the competitive mobile chipset market.
While specific details about the Dimensity 9300 are still limited, MediaTek’s track record with the Dimensity 9000 series, including the popular Dimensity 9200 and 9200+, suggests that the upcoming chipset will offer significant improvements in performance and power efficiency. MediaTek has been successful in establishing itself in the premium smartphone market, and the Dimensity 9300 is expected to further enhance its position, particularly in the high-end and mobile gaming sectors.
