Apple’s Latest Patent reveals Wearable Tags for Health and Motion Tracking

Apple’s innovative foray into the wearable technology market took a leap forward with the introduction of AirTags in 2021. These small tracking devices became a hit among Apple enthusiasts, allowing them to easily locate their belongings. Now, Apple is once again pushing boundaries by working on a new type of AirTag called the ‘Wearable Tag,’ according to a recently discovered patent application in Europe.

The Patented Tag would incorporate a variety of Sensors for tracking

The Wearable Tag, as described by Apple in the patent application, is designed to be placed on different parts of a user’s body or clothing and is intended for various health-related functions. The possibilities are vast, ranging from posture monitoring and sun exposure tracking to physical therapy assistance, fall detection, and fitness/activity tracking. The Wearable Tag would incorporate different sensors depending on the specific health-related function it is being used for, ensuring accurate and comprehensive data collection.

Airtag

The patent application reveals that users would be able to configure and control the Wearable Tag through an electronic device, such as an iPhone. This device would not only determine the location of the tag on the user’s body but also allow users to select their desired health-related function. The Wearable Tag would then gather sensor data and relay it to the electronic device for analysis and feedback.

Apple’s patent illustrations offer a glimpse into the possibilities of the Wearable Tag. One image showcases a system consisting of multiple wearable tags and electronic devices. These tags can be worn on various body parts, such as the wrist, arm, finger, neck, waist, ankle, or other suitable areas, and communicate with devices like iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads.

Airtag Patent

The patent further reveals the design of the Wearable Tag itself. It features a housing that can be made of different materials, including plastic, glass, ceramics, metal, fabric, or a combination of these. This versatility allows for a comfortable and customizable user experience.

Apple’s vision for the Wearable Tag extends beyond individual use cases. In one illustration, multiple tags are placed all over a user’s body, enabling full-body motion tracking. This comprehensive tracking capability could find applications in physical therapy, dancing, fitness tracking, sports training, and more.

While the recently published European patent application bears Apple’s name as the applicant, it’s worth noting that the patent itself dates back to 2020 and was filed under the names of Apple‘s engineers to maintain secrecy. Once the patent is granted, Apple’s name will officially appear on the U.S. patent as well.

Apple’s exploration of the Wearable Tag concept signals the company’s commitment to expanding the capabilities of wearable technology beyond simple tracking. By integrating health-related functionalities into their devices, Apple aims to empower users to monitor and improve their well-being in innovative ways. The company also recently collaborated with Google to prevent stalkers from quietly tracking people using AirTags. As always, the true potential of Apple’s inventions will be unveiled once they make their way from patents to actual products.

Google Fixing Battery Drain and Overheating Issues on Pixel Devices

Google Pixel phone users can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Google has acknowledged and resolved the battery drain and overheating issues plaguing its devices. The problems arose following a recent update to the Google app in the May update, leaving users frustrated and seeking solutions. However, the tech giant has now implemented a server-side fix to address the issue, offering immediate relief to affected users.

Google Pixel batteries have never been their strong selling point

The battery drain and overheating problems that have been affecting many Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 users have been a cause of concern and frustration for a while. Reports flooded online forums, such as Reddit, Google support forums, and Twitter, with numerous users sharing their experiences of facing similar issues. Although Google’s smartphones are renowned for their exceptional cameras, battery life has always been a weak point. Unfortunately, a recent update exacerbated the problem, resulting in increased power consumption and overheating concerns. As users searched for answers, Google’s response remained limited, leaving them in a state of uncertainty.

Google Pixel 6 Pro

An alarmed Pixel 6 Pro user contacted Engadget, pointing out the overheating and excessive battery drain they were experiencing. Suspecting the Google app, particularly the update released on May 12th, as the culprit, the user shared screenshots revealing the app’s significant battery consumption in the background. Even rolling back to an older version of the app provided only marginal relief. Some users attempted factory resets and reinstallation of apps, but the issues persisted, leading to worries about potential damage to the device’s battery and CPU.

Users who reached out to Google for assistance encountered limited support, with some reporting unhelpful interactions with the company’s support staff. Rolling back to older versions of the Google app proved ineffective for many, hinting at a more complex underlying cause. Speculations varied, from potential issues with Android System Intelligence to worsened battery life after the May update. Although Google is aware of the problem, they have yet to provide a comprehensive solution or explanation.

Fortunately, Google has now confirmed that a fix is rolling out to address the battery drain and overheating issues caused by a recent backend change in the Google app. This fix, implemented on the server side, does not require any app or system updates. The company assures users that the problem will be resolved immediately, returning affected devices to normal behavior.

Impacted users, particularly those with Pixel 6 or 7 series devices, noticed a significant reduction in battery life, with some claiming their battery life was effectively halved. Google’s acknowledgement and swift action to rectify the issue through a server-side fix should alleviate the frustrations experienced by affected users.

Google Pixel phone users can now breathe a sigh of relief as the battery drain and overheating problems that have plagued their devices are being addressed. Google has implemented a server-side fix to resolve the issue caused by a recent update to the Google app. This fix, which does not require any app or system updates, promises an immediate return to normal device behavior for affected users. With Google’s swift response and resolution, users can once again enjoy their Pixel phones without worrying about excessive power consumption and overheating.

According to a report from last month, Samsung’s next major launch event will be held in the last week of July. Now, a new report that has surfaced in a South Korean publication named Chosun has revealed the launch date of the next Galaxy Unpacked event, which will see the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

As per the report, the South Korean tech giant will hold a launch event on July 26 to announce its new foldable smartphones. To recall, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Z Flip 4 were announced on August 10. Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event for Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are likely to be held on July 26

Samsung has been launching its Galaxy Z foldables in August every year. However, it appears that the company’s new strategy is to create a sufficient gap between the launch of the Galaxy Z foldables and Apple’s new iPhones, which usually debut in September every year.

The report also states that Samsung’s Unpacked event for its upcoming foldable phones will be held in Seoul. This will be a big change, as the company has previously held its foldable phone launch events in the US. At present, there is no official confirmation from Samsung on the launch date or venue of its next launch event.

Now that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Z Flip 5 are tipped to launch on July 26, it is likely that the company will release an official confirmation of their launch in June. The event is also expected to see the arrival of other products, such as the Galaxy Tab S9 series and the Galaxy Watch 6 lineup. These devices are expected to go on sale by mid-August in different markets.

Notably, Big G also announced a new photo format for capturing images, called Ultra HDR. This photo format will be released with Android 14, and lucky for us, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped smartphones are all ready to support it.

Ultra HDR can offer a dynamic range beyond 8-bits

During the I/O 2023, Google introduced Ultra HDR as a new photo format for clicking pictures. The company explains that the format will allow photos to be captured in the backward-compatible JPEG format, but offer a dynamic range beyond 8 bits. This will enable phones to shoot photos with more details in shadows and highlights.

Ultra-HDR-SDR

According to Google, Ultra HDR images can be displayed in a variety of ways, from a standard dynamic range (SDR) to a high dynamic range (HDR). The final result is adaptive and depends on the original intent of the user, the capabilities of the display, and the viewing environment.  Additionally, images in this format are backward compatible with existing apps. So, it doesn’t matter if an app does not have HDR capabilities, it can still show the image as an SDR JPEG file. This makes it easy to share Ultra HDR images with others, even if their device doesn’t support the format.

This format will be rolled out with Android 14 and Qualcomm has been working with the Android team to make use of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s 18-bit ISP for the Ultra HDR format. As a result, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered phones will be able to support Ultra HDR photo capture as soon as it rolls out.

These features enable the camera to identify and track fast-moving subjects with greater accuracy and clarity. Additionally, the two new innovative applications, Auto Tracking and Auto Loop, currently support the CR-N700 and will expand to cover more compatible remote PTZ cameras from Canon’s lineup in the future. These consumer-centric features are designed to improve productivity and reduce workload and manpower for remote production, allowing operators to focus on tasks such as camera switching and content delivery without the need for additional equipment like servers or computers.

Mr. Manabu Yamazaki, President & CEO of Canon India, expressed his enthusiasm for the new product launch, highlighting Canon’s commitment to innovation and a quality-first approach. He stated that the new high-end 4K PTZ remote camera, along with the auto-tracking and auto-loop features, will be the perfect choice for various industries, including broadcasters, rental houses, education, reality shows, and sports. He emphasized that with the CR-N700 and the two new applications, Canon is pushing the boundaries of video production, expanding its user base across multiple segments, and solidifying its position as an industry leader. He also expressed anticipation for consumer response and pledged to continue introducing innovative products in line with industry trends.

Auto Tracking Application: Superb Tracking Capability

This application enables the remote camera to automatically track speakers or other specified persons during commercial presentations, lectures, and events. With in-camera visual analysis, the system achieves exceptional tracking capability, allowing shooting with various viewpoints, including full body, upper body, shoulders-up, and others, while accurately following the movement of subjects ranging from slow to brisk speeds.

In addition to capturing human figures typically required for broadcasting commercial events and lectures, the remote camera, equipped with a high-performance pan/tilt mechanism, can smoothly capture the slow movement of subjects for high-quality video production. The application also offers a wide range of adjustment settings, such as Composition, Tracking Sensitivity, and Priority Display Area.

This application enables the remote camera to automatically repeat subtle pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) staging movements commonly performed by operators during the broadcast of events like sports competitions, interviews, TV commercials, and movies. Operators can adjust parameters such as Position Setting to determine the pause duration at each point, Route Setting to determine movement speed, and other operations including Preview and Start, which can be easily configured on the settings screen

Google rolling out Gboard split keyboard for Android tablets

Google is making good on its promise to enhance app experiences on large-screen devices, including foldable phones and tablets, with the Android 12L and Android 13 updates. During the recent Google I/O 2023 event, the company revealed that it has optimized over 50 apps for foldables and tablets, and now Gboard joins the list with an exciting new feature.

Gboard’s split keyboard will ease your typing experience on tablets

Last year, Gboard introduced a split keyboard for foldable devices, and now it is making its way to Android tablets. This split keyboard feature divides the keyboard into two equal halves, with an equal number of keys on the left and right sides. By default, the “Split layout to include duplicated keys” option in Settings > Preferences > Layout is enabled, which means certain keys are duplicated on both sides of the split keyboard.

However, users also have the option to disable this setting, which emphasizes the left side in the second and third rows. Switching between the “Standard” and “Split keyboard” options can be easily done using a toolbar tile.

Users have reported encountering this feature on a Galaxy Tab S8 running the Gboard beta version 12.9.21. Previously, Google had rolled out the split keyboard exclusively for foldable devices like the Galaxy Fold and Surface Duo.

It’s worth noting that while the split keyboard feature is now available on tablets, the widely anticipated toolbar redesign, which made its initial appearance in February, has yet to be widely rolled out to users.

The introduction of the Gboard split keyboard on Android tablets offers users increased flexibility and convenience when typing, particularly on larger devices like tablets. With these continuous optimizations, Google aims to enhance the overall user experience on foldable devices and tablets.
