Oppo Closes Chip Design Subsidiary Zeku Amid Economic Challenges

Oppo, known mostly for its smartphones, but the company has investments in various different fields. It may come as a surprise, but one of these areas is chip design. The Chinese tech giant has been operating in this field for a while with a subsidiary called Zeku. However, up until now, it has not achieved any notable success. It seems that the company, tired of waiting, has decided to shut down Zeku and withdraw from the chip design business. Here are the details…

OPPO to Discontinue In-House Chip Production

Recently, Oppo has been making headlines with a series of bad news. Not long ago, we mentioned that the company might withdraw from France and even potentially halt its entire European operations. Now, Oppo has made the tough decision to cease operations of its chip development subsidiary, Zeku, in the face of economic uncertainty and a volatile smartphone market.

As you may know, when it comes to consumer electronics, it is necessary to depend on other manufacturers. There are many different components to consider, such as displays, processors, and batteries, and only a few companies can produce all of them in-house. For example, even if you manufacture most of these components yourself, like Samsung, you may still have to rely on external sources for performance-related reasons. However, like Apple, you can focus on producing the most critical and competitive components yourself. Although not easy, chip design was an investment in this area for Oppo.

However, the company has now shut down its chip design subsidiary, Zeku. This move has raised concerns for other Chinese companies striving for semiconductor self-sufficiency, as they navigate a challenging industry landscape. Zeku played a crucial role in Oppo’s chip development efforts, boasting a product line that included core application processors, short-range communication, 5G modems, radio frequency, ISPs, and power management chips.

The decision to terminate Zeku’s operations was announced through an official statement, citing global economic uncertainties and an unpredictable smartphone market. Oppo acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and expressed commitment to managing the situation responsibly while continuing to deliver quality products and value to customers. First, there were rumors of Oppo’s withdrawal from Europe, and now the cessation of Zeku’s operations raises more concerns. What is the reason behind these worrisome decisions?

Despite being one of the largest Chinese smartphone brands and ranking fourth in global shipments, OPPO has experienced a decline in shipments. According to data from IDC, shipments fell by 22% last year, totaling 103 million units. The company may foresee this decline continuing and wants to prepare itself for upcoming challenges in the future. Financial savings is one of the easiest ways to do this, and as you might expect, chip design is a costly business, especially if you’re not getting good returns.

Legion Y900 Tablet Review: A Portable 14″ Monitor Runs Android With Excellent Performance

Legion Y900 Tablet

I’ve been skeptical of manufacturers using “productivity” as one of the selling points of a tablet since we all know that the mobile platform lacks those professional applications and effective features. You can only do simple text work or video editing on a tablet.

But I recently got a tablet that turns itself into a great companion to a PC and really met my needs about productivity in a different way. The Legion Y900, a super tablet with a large 14.5-inch screen, is powered by the Dimensity 9000 and supports a DP-IN feature, which means that apart from being a tablet, it can also work as a mobile monitor. Today let’s see how it reconstructs people’s imagination of a tablet with a large screen.

Uboxing

When I first saw the packaging of the Y900 tablet, I wondered if they were shipping the wrong product, as it looked very similar to the Legion laptops of recent years, both in terms of style and size.

I had used the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and was really impressed by that screen, but at this moment, my perception of a tablet was once more shattered. When I picked up the Legion Y900 wrapped in paper, I felt like I was holding not a tablet but a laptop with a missing keyboard.

Fortunately, the accessories at the bottom of the package reminded me that what I had was indeed a tablet, and as you can see there isn’t a huge laptop power adapter. We got a manual, a warranty card, a full-featured USB-C cable, and a 68-watt charger. All these accessories are pretty common in other regular tablets.

Design

It is not simple to make a product refined in a larger size, Lenovo is very clever by splicing different materials to split the back cover into two parts. It looks pretty good with a very slim body. Although as an Android tablet, the size is unnaturally large, it is surprisingly lighter than a 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

I think 12 inches should be a dividing line. The screen size of devices larger than 12 inches is no longer comfortable for holding in hands, I tried to play games with this tablet in my fingers. After ten minutes my hands were starting to hold out, although it provides a very good visual experience. The pleasure of my eyes obviously couldn’t stop me from putting it down.

In terms of connectivity, the Legion Y900 has one more USB-C port compared to other Android tablets. Lenovo claims it supports a DP-in feature, which means the Y900 can be used as an external display for peripherals such as notebooks and smartphones via this additional video-in port.

Screen & Speaker

Apart from the Samsung Galaxy Tab, this is the first time I’ve seen a brand use such a large OLED panel on a tablet, and its color and contrast ratio is way ahead of those of LCD panels. And more importantly, it also supports high-frequency PWM Dimming.

In terms of audio system, this tablet has eight built-in speaker units, and its sound quality is the best I’ve ever had in a tablet. It reminds me of some high-end laptops like the Macbook Pro. Other than that, I don’t know of any other tablet that compares to it.

Performance

The Legion Y900 is powered by the Dimensity 9000 platform, a platform with great potential, but it also requires the brand to invest more effort in optimization compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series.

From these Benchmarks we see that although there’s a little gap when comparing it with Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, but the good news is that, it’s much ahead of Snapdragon 870, so it’s easy to get a very smooth experience both in daily use and gaming on the Y900.

I really enjoy playing Genshin Impact on my tablet. By far Mihoyo hasn’t offered gamepad support for the Android version. Fortunately, this tablet has an additional peripheral mode that allows you to enable this feature in the Game Assistant and create your own key mapping when you connect it to a keyboard, mouse, or gamepad.

Compared with touch control, using a gamepad definitely brings better gameplay. The only problem is that the game itself still doesn’t support custom buttons, so you can’t change the transparency of the virtual buttons on the screen to hide them.

ZUI

To take full advantage of the chipset, Lenovo brings to it a very powerful multitasking feature. You can place up to not two fixed windows on the screen but four, and on top of that, you can continue to open up to 10 floating windows.

Lenovo seems to really treat this tablet as a PC, but unfortunately, the Dimensity chipset doesn’t support Windows on ARM, otherwise, we may see a 2-in-1 super tablet.

Thanks to the DP-IN function, you can use this tablet as a super sub-screen, You can connect it to any compatible device via Type c To Type C cable or HDMI To Type C cable.

If you have a phone that supports desktop mode, this tablet will be the best partner because it does not only transfer graphics and audio, but also supports touch operations, and if you have a Windows 11 laptop, you can also use the Windows sub-system on Android better with this touch screen.

Battery & Charging

In terms of battery life, the Legion Y900 packs a 12,300 mAh battery, and thanks to the low power consumption of the OLED panel and the Dimensity 9000 platform, the tablet has an incredible working time for a single charge.

With the support of 68 watts of fast charging, a full charge even takes a shorter time than charging an iPhone.

Verdict

You guys probably remember that the release of the Legion Y700 surprised us last year, as few brands were willing to develop small tablets for this niche market. And the Y700 tablet just makes the iPad mini no longer the only option.

This time Lenovo once again brings a surprise, a tablet with totally opposite concepts, I think they must have a very special thinking in tablets. Perhaps not many people need a very large-screen tablet. When all other brands ignore the group, Lenovo chose to be the first adventurer, which is very commendable.

Legion Y900 is not just a tablet, but also a great companion as an expansion screen, I hope Lenovo can stick to this product line because Qualcomm’s next-generation desktop platform is on its way and I want to see an ultimate tablet that supports Android & Windows dual system, and of course, it would be perfect if it still supports a DP-in feature.

Insta360 Flow Phone Gimbal Review: More Than A Stabilizer

Insta360 Flow

When was the last time you used a smartphone gimbal? Or to rephrase the question, do you really still need a stabilizer for phones? My answer is Yes, although camera systems on smartphones become more and more powerful, and getting a relatively stable shooting with OIS is already a basic ability of a phone camera. So people tend to leave the gimbal they once bought in the cluttered room.

While some brands still want to change it with their products, like insta360, a brand known for its 360 cameras. It launched their first smartphone gimbal, and even with a glance at the packaging, we know they are aiming to compete with DJI. Why would anyone want to start making smartphone gimbals in 2023? Can this gadget really make your phone camera more stable, and, more powerful? Let’s find out together today!

Unboxing

Let’s start with the unboxing, from the title on the package we can learn that insta360 defines this kit as a creator kit, smartphone stabilizer is just a subtitle, which is interesting, from the other side we can see that it can be used in many scenes.

The whole package is not the usual drawer type, it is a collapsible box, the gimbal is at the top. And I have to say the transparent case is very attractive, but let’s check the accessories first. What we got is the creator kit. all expansion accessories are in this small package.

This is a set of backpack ropes, you can attach it to the small bag to turn it into a shoulder bag.

The next is a spotlight, when you make a vlog or live stream at night it will be very useful.

Then we have a dual TypeC cable, a TypeC to TypeA cable, and another TypeC to lightning cable. And of course, a quick start guide and warranty card are included.

In addition to these, we have a silicone grip case, and then the last accessory is a magnetic phone clip.

Design

insta360 flow has a very flexible and smart design. First of all, it has a multi-stage foldable structure, when fully folded up, the compact gimbal looks like a door handle, you can scramble it into the pocket or just carry it in a single hand.

I recommend that you mount your phone to the magnetic clip before use. when you want to use the Flow, you just need to mount your phone to the gimbal and pull the handle down, the gimbal will automatically activate and start working.

We can see a power button on the control wheel, but I think maybe insta360 can turn it into a customizable button because it’s easy enough to turn the gimbal on or off by unfolding or folding it.

There are two hidden structures inside the handle, First, if you feel the handle is too short to hold comfortably, you can grab the bottom of the handle and pull down, now the handle is extended, then you can spread it to turn the gimbal into a tripod.

To make it easier to take selfies, you can pull up the top of the gimbal, and the top of the selfie stick has a hinge so you can adjust its angle.

Now we know why insta360 called it a creator kit, it’s really a multi-functional gimbal. I really appreciate that insta360 made all these extensions in an integrated system. you don’t need to take out a bunch of accessories in the package and then repeatedly mount and dismount all the parts.

Control & Connectivity

Now let’s look at its control and connectivity. The Flow has a TypeC port. It supports reverse charging so you no longer need to worry about the battery life when you connect it to your phone.

On both sides of the phone clip, we can see a notch, you can put the spotlight on it and connect it to the TypeC port.

For night recording, such a spotlight will bring a huge boost to your video.

There is a cold shoe connector at the bottom of the gimbal arm, to which you can attach many kinds of accessories, such as a wireless microphone.

By the way, the transparent case is really cool and everything inside is not just for decoration but real components and circuit boards, if you ignore the insta360 logo, it really looks like a product from another brand. Well, Carl Pei probably likes it.

There is a control wheel and trigger button located in front and behind the handle, insta360 set up a lot of operations for these buttons. As you can see, just a trigger button can achieve five operations, but most of the time I will only use two of them, because I usually use the Flow to shoot products and people.

When you press the trigger, the camera will identify the subject in the picture and start tracking, you can use this feature to complete some very nice wrap-around shots, and when you finish footage or want to start over, just click the button again to cancel the tracking point.

The control wheel consists of three parts, a joystick, three action buttons, and a zoom circle. From the indicator, we can understand that the gimbal offers four working modes.

If you are a novice, Auto mode is the most recommended option because the camera will automatically recognize the elements and movements in the picture and then help you to complete the shot in an appropriate way. Even as an experienced user, I use auto mode a lot because it’s smart enough to work better than the manual controls in some cases.

insta360 APP

Putting aside the insta360 APP, the Flow is already the most practical smartphone stabilizer that we’ve ever used, but if you’ve used some action cameras from insta360, you should know that the APP is the killjoy of the brand, and at this moment I want to show you 3 of my favorite features in the insta360 APP.

The first is Dolly Zoom, a very classic shooting trick that makes your videos dramatic. With the help of the gimbal, all you need to do is select the subject on the screen, hit the record button, and then move the camera slowly from near to far, and the app will lock on to the object and automatically complete the zoom and stabilization. The clip looks great, right?

The second is basketball mode. When you switch to this mode, you need to convert the gimbal to tripod mode and place it in a good position, then follow the guide to correct the camera.

The gimbal will now automatically track the basketball and record highlights for all players, which is a really cool feature for those play basketball a lot. For me, it definitely helps improve my skills.

The third AI-powered feature is the live mode. With this feature, you can have the gimbal track you in any camera app or live stream. If you are hosting a live channel, you no longer need to hire a cameraman, just put the gimbal in the center of the place and it will keep you in the view of the audience at all times, you just need to focus on the show you perform.

Here is an additional feature I would like to introduce, the shot genie library, which is not a specific feature but a collection of tutorials that will teach you to create remarkable videos in any scenario.

For beginners, creativity is far more important than what equipment you use. This library inspires all users to create, and then they will find that video shooting is not as hard as they thought.

Verdict

So this is the insta360 flow. It is difficult to summarize in one sentence what kind of product this is, if you just consider it as a stabilizer, it is already the best-designed one, and at the same time, it is also a smart selfie stick and tripod.

Honestly, it doesn’t seem like a debut product at all but a near-perfect product after several iterations, but maybe all that is secondary to an insta360 product. I think the most valuable thing will always be the positive user community in the app and those excellent official tutorials. I believe anyone who buys this gimbal will learn and enjoy video creation.
