Microbes Found in Polar Regions Offer Hope for Plastic Waste Reduction

Plastic waste is a growing concern worldwide, and researchers have been working hard to find solutions to this critical issue. Recently, some potentially promising news has emerged from a study that discovered microbes capable of breaking down plastic without requiring high temperatures. These microbes were found in the polar regions of the Arctic and the Swiss Alps. Although this is just the beginning of the research, these findings could have a significant impact on how we deal with industrial plastic waste in landfills, which causes massive ecological damage.

Degrading Plastic with heat is far from Carbon-Neutral

The traditional approach to harnessing plastic-degrading microorganisms has been hindered by their requirement for high temperatures. However, the microbes discovered in this study have rewritten the rules by showcasing their remarkable plastic-digesting abilities at low to moderate temperatures. Previous attempts to employ plastic-eating microorganisms at an industrial scale proved challenging due to the need for costly heating processes that were far from carbon-neutral. However, the newfound cold-adapted bacteria and fungi have the potential to revolutionize the field by providing an efficient and environmentally friendly solution.

Plastic

Among the various microorganisms tested, two fungal strains, Neodevriesia and Lachnellula, emerged as the unsung heroes of plastic degradation. These extraordinary fungi exhibited the ability to break down almost all types of plastics tested, with the exception of polyethylene (PE), which remains a formidable challenge for current methods. Nonetheless, their success in decomposing biodegradable plastics, such as polyester-polyurethane (PUR), and commercially available mixtures of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA), offers significant hope for a more sustainable future.

the researchers believe that these microbes’ ability to break down plastics may have been influenced by their natural adaptation to break down cutin, a protective layer found in plants that shares similarities with plastic polymers. This fortuitous connection between the microorganisms and the plant polymer cutin has paved the way for their enzymes to target plastic polymers, providing a starting point for further exploration and innovation in plastic waste management.

Although this discovery is merely the tip of the iceberg, it signifies a significant milestone in our quest to combat plastic pollution. Further research and development are essential to optimize the efficiency of plastic degradation and scale up these solutions for industrial applications. By prioritizing innovative approaches to plastic waste management, we can envision a future where plastic pollution becomes a relic of the past, safeguarding the health of our planet for generations to come.

Elon Musk to Step Down as Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino Poised to Take the Reins

Elon Musk has announced his decision to step down from the position of Twitter’s CEO, initiating a wave of anticipation for his successor. The tech mogul had previously mentioned that he will resign from the position, but expectations weren’t exactly lingering with that statement. Although the new CEO’s identity remains officially undisclosed, Musk has revealed that he has hired an executive for the position. As he transitions into his new roles as executive chairman and chief technical officer, speculations have emerged, with Linda Yaccarino, an advertising executive from NBCUniversal, emerging as a prominent candidate to lead Twitter.

Advertising is Linda Yaccarino’s strong suit, as per reports

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Linda Yaccarino, known for her strong advocacy in finding improved methods to measure advertising effectiveness, is reportedly in talks to assume the Twitter CEO role. Yaccarino has showcased her admiration for Musk in the past, and their shared appearances at ad industry events have fueled speculation about their potential collaboration.

Musk’s tenure at Twitter so far has been rocky, to say the least. While he has taken desperate yet important measures to save his $44 billion investment, Musk’s bold actions included the termination of the executive team and the dissolution of the board of directors. While his looser content moderation policies, aimed at limiting reach rather than enforcing outright bans, have garnered praise from certain circles, they have also prompted concerns about hate speech and misinformation. Consequently, some advertisers have chosen to distance themselves from the platform. Twitter has attempted to counterbalance this by exploring subscription-based revenue models.

Although Musk will no longer hold the CEO position, his significant influence over Twitter’s technological aspects is set to continue. His involvement in the selection process of the new CEO suggests that the company’s strategic direction may remain relatively unchanged. This could mean that Twitter will maintain the status quo established during Musk’s tenure, at least in the short term. This transition may come as a relief to Tesla investors who have expressed concerns about Musk’s divided attention between Twitter and his renowned electric vehicle brand. With his reduced role at Twitter, Musk will likely have more time and energy to devote to Tesla and its ongoing battle against fierce competition.

Facebook Messenger Bids Farewell to Apple Watch in Meta’s Latest Strategic Move

In a surprising move, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has decided to pull the Facebook Messenger app from the Apple Watch. This decision has left Apple Watch users disappointed, as they will no longer be able to send or receive messages through the app starting from June 1st. The announcement came through a discreet notification on the Apple Watch Messenger app, catching many users off guard. While Meta has confirmed the news, they have yet to release a public statement explaining the rationale behind this decision.

Meta might be looking to maximize Ad Revenue from the Messenger app

For Apple Watch users who have been accustomed to the convenience of Facebook Messenger on their wrists, this change comes as a significant blow. Until now, they could effortlessly send and receive messages without reaching for their iPhones. The integration also allowed users to make posts and upload photos directly from their Apple Watch, saving time and enhancing the user experience. However, as one Redditor aptly pointed out, such seamless integration meant users didn’t need to open the app as frequently, resulting in reduced ad exposure for Messenger subscribers.

Apple Watch

Speculation regarding the motives behind Meta’s decision revolves around financial considerations. The possible reason for removing the Messenger app from the Apple Watch could be linked to the company’s desire to maximize ad revenue. By eliminating the Apple Watch app, Meta ensures that users spend more time on the iOS Facebook Messenger app, leading to increased ad impressions. This strategic move aligns with Meta’s goal of generating higher revenue from advertisements.

While Apple Watch users may be disappointed, they are not completely helpless. Facebook spokespersons have emphasized that messaging through Facebook Messenger will still be accessible via the iPhone app, desktop, or website. Users will receive notifications on their Apple Watches, allowing them to stay informed about incoming messages. While it may not offer the same level of convenience, these alternative options ensure that users can still engage with their Messenger contacts.

While the exact reasoning behind this move remains undisclosed, speculations point towards financial considerations and the goal of maximizing ad revenue. Apple Watch users, though disappointed, can still access Facebook Messenger through alternative means, ensuring they can stay connected with their contacts.

Microsoft Aims to Unlock the Secrets of the Stars for Infinite Energy through Nuclear Fusion

Microsoft is one of the world’s largest and most valuable companies. Although many of us know it for its Windows operating system, the tech giant is involved in a wide range of sectors, from server web services to artificial intelligence research. Recently, the company added a new sector to its portfolio. Microsoft made a bold move by partnering with Helion Energy, a company focused on nuclear fusion, in order to create a new source of clean energy. Here are the details…

Microsoft Big Gamble on Nuclear Fusion: The Future of Clean Energy?

Microsoft frequently makes headlines with its partnerships and collaborations. For example, the company recently decided to work with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and integrated AI technology into services like Bing. Now, focusing on clean energy, Microsoft has signed a collaboration agreement with Helion Energy. The tech giant aims to benefit from Helion’s experience in the nuclear fusion field to create a new source of clean energy.

The plan is to develop the world’s first commercial fusion generator by 2028, which could potentially change the way we power our lives. Both companies have agreed to work together to generate at least 50 megawatts of power using nuclear fusion. This is more power than the US’s first two offshore wind farms can produce. When considering the rising population, advancing technology, and increasing energy needs, the company’s plan becomes more of a necessity than a future dream.

Helion Energy’s success depends on making significant progress in a short amount of time. While some experts think the first nuclear fusion power plant could be built within a few decades, Helion must move faster to meet their goal. They also need to make sure their technology is affordable compared to other energy sources.

Helion Energy is determined to succeed and is willing to face the consequences if they don’t. The agreement between Microsoft and Helion includes financial penalties if they can’t build the fusion system. Helion’s CEO, David Kirtley, said that they’re committed to building and selling the system to Microsoft.

What is nuclear fusion?

Nuclear fusion is a powerful energy-producing process where atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a significant amount of energy. This reaction, which powers stars like our sun, has long been sought as a clean and nearly limitless energy source for humanity. However, replicating the necessary conditions for fusion on Earth has proven to be a major scientific and engineering challenge, and a commercially viable fusion power plant remains an elusive goal despite decades of research.

Microsoft’s partnership with Helion Energy is a risky bet on nuclear fusion, an energy source that could revolutionize our world. It’s a tough challenge, but the rewards could be incredible.

However, excitement turned into amusement when the Tesla Cybertruck was spotted stuck in the mud following the event. According to images shared by some Twitter users, a prototype Tesla Cybertruck got stuck in the mud.

The full story is not entirely known, but it appears that a Tesla official was driving the Cybertruck when it went off the road and somehow got stuck in the terrain. The company has always emphasized the vehicle’s performance in its previous communications. It is unknown what caused the situation of being stuck in the mud. Neither Elon Musk nor Tesla has commented on the incident.

It is worth mentioning that the prototype’s performance should not be taken as an indicator of the production truck’s capabilities, so reservation holders need not worry. NIO will soon release the EC7 with a 150kWh semi solid-state battery and 600+ miles range

There are indications that NIO will soon release a new EV with a 150kWh battery pack that delivers more than 600 miles on a single charge. The semi-solid-state battery will be premiered in an electric SUV, possibly the EC7. The company has filed for regulatory approval of three EVs that will use its semi-solid-state battery manufactured by WeLion.

NIO EC7 electric SUV

The three new NIO EVs are the ET5, ET7, and EC7 models. The ET5 and ET7 are sedans while the EC7 is a performance SUV. The three EVs officially have up to 150kWh power packs based on a semi solid-state battery. On the other hand, the NIO EC7 electric SUV is expected to enter the market in June 2023.

The new NIO battery pack for its premium SUV is an expensive and high-performance battery. NIO reportedly approached CATL first for the manufacture of the 150kWh battery but subsequently settled for WeLion. It seemed CATL was not enthusiastic enough about the prospect of such a battery and declined the proposition. This was because it felt such kind of battery had never been produced before and it would have to invest heavily in R&D for this purpose. It will also have to invest heavily in production tools and other aspects of the project with low commercial viability.

WeLion is by far a smaller company than CATL but it was able to work with NIO in the development of the first semi solid-state 150kWh battery pack. The battery is expected to achieve the 1,000km range on new NIO models. The pack uses a hybrid liquid-solid electrolyte and has been proven to be commercially viable. It remains to be seen however whether the cost of these innovative semi solid-state high-performance battery packs will elicit substantial demand. The cost of the 150kWh battery is reportedly as much as the ET5 sedan itself. NIO has said that the battery may be available on rental for customers who may desire to embark on longer trips. It has a network of battery swap stations to accommodate such a scenario.

There are also indications that mass-producing the 150kWh battery packs could substantially reduce the cost. The recent regulatory filing by the company seems to be leading in that direction. NIO expects to make direct sales of the battery inside its vehicles this summer.

In the US, the Pixel Fold will be available for a starting price of $1,799. It will be available in “Obsidian” and “Porcelain” colors only. There’s also a 512GB variant, which costs a fortune ($1,919 to be precise). Google is being generous by giving a free Pixel Watch worth $349 to those pre-ordering. The foldable will start shipping on June 27.

Even though you can’t buy the Pixel Fold in India, it’s still a good idea to stay informed about the device. You can head over here to read the detailed specifications of the new foldable.

iQOO has announced the upcoming launch of its new Neo 8 series, featuring two premium smartphones: the Neo 8 and Neo 8 Pro. Prior to its official release on May 23 in China, the company has shared the design of the phones, which showcase some minor updates from the previous Neo 7 series.

iQOO

On Weibo, iQOO has released a video that unveils the design of the upcoming Neo 8 series. The phones will maintain a curved rear panel, and the previewed model features a red vegan leather back panel. On the back, there is a rectangular camera module with two circular cutouts, housing the dual-camera setup and LED flash for the Neo 8 5G. The camera module text reveals that the Neo 8 will incorporate optical image stabilization (OIS) support.

According to iQOO, the Neo 8 Pro will be equipped with the recently launched MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ System-on-Chip (SoC), built on a 4nm process and capable of reaching a top clock speed of 3.35GHz. Additionally, the phone will incorporate Vivo’s V1+ chip to improve its camera, performance, and display capabilities. With the inclusion of the V1+ ISP chip, it appears that iQOO might be planning to make the Neo 8 Pro into an all-rounder rather than just a gaming-centric device.

A recent AnTuTu listing of the device also shows that it will be a monster gaming machine, as it has managed to score more than 1.3 million points in the benchmark. Let’s see what else is known about the iQOO Neo 8 series devices at this point.

It will also have a 16MP front-facing camera. The phone is powered by a 5000mAh battery and supports 120W fast charging out of the box. The Neo 8 Pro will run on Android 13 and will have Origin OS 3 layered on top.
