Elon Musk’s SpaceX Boosts Potential Rival Sateliot with Historic 5G Satellite Launch

In the past, space exploration was dominated by government-backed organizations like NASA that seemingly had endless funding. However, nowadays, space travel has become more accessible than ever, largely thanks to Elon Musk and his groundbreaking company, SpaceX. By introducing reusable rockets, Musk has significantly reduced the costs associated with space travel, opening up a world of endless opportunities. Consequently, numerous companies and countries have started to launch objects into orbit at more affordable prices. Among these companies is Sateliot, which successfully deployed the world’s first 5G satellite into space using SpaceX‘s services. Here are the details…

How Sateliot Plans to Fill the 85% Gap in Global Mobile Connectivity

Although 5G technology has been around for some time, it is not yet widely used. The main reason for this is that many countries have not yet established the necessary infrastructure. This and similar negative developments have slowed down the progress of the technology, but a solution has emerged from a company called Sateliot. You may have heard of Starlink, founded by Elon Musk, which aims to provide global broadband internet using hundreds of satellites in orbit.

Sateliot is not much different. The company, established with a similar mindset, differs from Starlink by providing cellular connectivity. Although they are fundamentally competitors, it might be more accurate to describe these two companies as “siblings” or “cousins” at this point. Most recently, Sateliot developed the world’s first 5G satellite and launched it into space using SpaceX’s services.

SpaceX has successfully launched the first-ever 5G satellite into low Earth orbit. The satellite, named “The GroundBreaker,” is part of a planned constellation of over 250 spacecraft designed to communicate with terrestrial cell towers and bridge gaps in data networks worldwide. Sateliot aims to fill an estimated 85 percent gap in global mobile connectivity and envisions numerous applications across various markets, including transportation.

However, like everything else, this is not cheap. Sateliot has already reported sales exceeding $1.3 billion as its first satellite begins operation.

Hyundai Motor Surpasses Samsung, Becoming Korea’s Most Profitable Firm with 66,000 EV Sales

Technology continues to advance and make our lives easier. However, the importance of technology is not only limited to this, as there is a significant financial aspect involved. Large corporations such as Apple, Volkswagen, and Microsoft contribute to their countries economies with the money they make. For example Samsung, one of these companies, operates in various fields and was particularly proud to be the most profitable firm in its country due to its success in the smartphone and other business. However, this situation has now changed. Hyundai Motor has surpassed Samsung Electronics to become Korea’s most profitable company.

Hyundai Motor’s Rise to the Top for Korea’s Corporate Landscape with the $2.7 Billion Operating Profit

Hyundai Motor recently reported a first quarter operating profit of 3.59 trillion won ($2.7 billion). This increase in earnings marks an important milestone, as it means that Samsung, Korea’s most profitable company since 2009, has lost its crown. Samsung, operating in various fields, was particularly successful in the smartphone market. However, the company faced challenges such as disappointing sales for flagship models, increased competition in mid-range, and best-selling models with low-profit margins, leading to this change in standing.

Hyundai Motor’s first quarter earnings report showed that sales rose 24.7 percent year-on-year to 37.7 trillion won, while operating profit increased 86.3 percent from a year ago. The company sold 1,021,712 cars worldwide in the January-March period, marking a 13.2 percent increase from the previous year. The automaker attributed the strong sales figures to improvements in production, as chip and component supplies stabilized worldwide. Sales in markets outside of Korea grew by 10.7 percent to 830,665 units, while sales in domestic increased 25.6 percent to 191,047 units.

Hyundai Motor credited rising sales of SUVs and Genesis luxury models, as well as favorable exchange rates, for the increase in revenues, despite the challenging economic environment. The company also reported selling nearly 66,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first quarter, a 48 percent year-on-year increase.

The real question is how Samsung will respond to this situation. Of course, the main reason for the change in rankings is due to Hyundai Motor’s success. However, Samsung has been unable to overcome its long-standing profitability issues. Recent developments are being interpreted by many as a sign that change is on the horizon and that the company needs to adapt.

A New Huawei Phone with a design Similar to P40 Pro in the Works

Although Huawei phones are not as popular as they used to be, the company still isn’t giving up and had continued to launch new phones in the market. Recently, the brand unveiled the P60 series in China, which includes three good-looking smartphones. Later, the company also introduced the mid-range Enjoy 60X. Now, rumors are rife that the Chinese brand is working on a new phone that looks a lot like the aging Huawei P40 Pro.

Huawei P40 Pro aesthetics may return

As per a Chinese tipster, Huawei is working on a new smartphone with a camera module similar to the P40 Pro (Via Huawei Central). To remind you, the Huawei P40 Pro is one of the brand’s first flagships to debut after the US trade ban. It boasted a notable design and camera setup but lacked 5G connectivity and Google apps.

Huawei-testing-new-p40-pro

The renders shared by the tipster show the upcoming smartphone with the same minimalistic design that we saw on the P40 Pro. You can see the curved screen and the wave-shaped aluminum frame instantly. However, unlike the 2020 flagship which gets a pill-shaped cutout on the display, the unnamed Huawei phone features a punch hole in the top center.

There’s a rectangular bump with rounded edges on the back panel. However, the camera arrangement replicates the design of the Huawei P40 Pro, with a vertical organization and a periscope telephoto zoom. Notably, the camera system uses only three lenses, and the right side of the bump houses the LED flash, as well as labels for XMAGE and other functions. Currently, the specifications and the marketing name of the smartphone is not known. We expect to learn more details in the coming days.

Huawei Mate 60 series to launch in October possibly with 5G onboard

Huawei Mate 50 series was launched towards the end of last year and it bought interesting features like Satellite connectivity and powerful cameras. But like the rest of Huawei phones, the lineup was restricted to 4G connectivity, which definitely made them less desirable. But that might change with the upcoming Mate 60 series. The flagship line is reported to debut in October and it is said to bring 5G connectivity. Here are the details.

5G could return on Huawei phones

According to a recent Weibo post by Chinese tipster Classmateguan, the highly anticipated Huawei Mate 60 series is expected to launch this October. This timeline coincides with the previous year’s release schedule. Interestingly, the tipster seems to suggest that the upcoming phones will feature 5G connectivity, as evidenced by the cryptic message “GGGGG” performance.

huawei-mate-60-series-5G-2

For the unaware, due to trade restrictions with U.S. companies like Qualcomm, Huawei has been barred from using 5G technology. This move has been seen to negatively impact the Chinese company’s smartphone business. Just a few years ago, Huawei claimed a global leadership position in the sale of smartphones and wireless networking equipment but now it’s barely staying relevant in the market.

In any case, Huawei is keeping up with the pace of technology and continues to offer consumers decent smartphones. Its latest release, the P60 series, boasts an impressive design and camera setup, which has been well-received by consumers. However, it’s worth noting that the lineup currently uses 4G chipsets, as that’s currently what the company has access to.

While details about the Mate 60 series are scarce, some renders have been circulating on the internet showing a possible Mate 60 series phone with a rear circular camera similar to that of the Honor X40. However, we don’t think these renders are accurate.

Here’s why Xiaomi won’t Launch Small and Compact Phones anytime soon

With every passing year, phones get taller. There was a time when smaller phones were everywhere and while we are not against large displays, it’s good to have variety in the market. Xiaomi, one of the top phone manufacturers, offers a range of devices, from affordable to premium. But it’s worth noting that most of its phones tend to be on the larger side, and it doesn’t seem like that will change anytime soon. In fact, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, recently shared some insight into why the company isn’t looking to make smaller and more compact phones.

The demand for small phones is very less in the current market: Lei Jun

Replying to a Weibo user asking if the company can make small and compact phones, Lei Jun said that the Xiaomi 13 is already a very good option, with exactly the same width as the iPhone 14, offering a balance between screen size and in-hand feel. The executive isn’t wrong as we noted in our review that the Xiaomi 13 actually feels great to hold.

Xiaomi compact phones

Further, Lei Jun explained why Xiaomi can’t produce compact phones in simple terms. He said that the number of people who want smaller phones is not enough, and so the sales volume wouldn’t justify the expenses incurred in developing a flagship mobile phone. Additionally, making the phone smaller would affect its battery life and camera capabilities.

The market for compact phones is indeed shrinking. What used to be a norm earlier, has now become a rarity. There are a few options still available in the market, like the iPhone mini line but that won’t be renewed further. In the Android world, you get the Galaxy S23, Asus Zenfone 8, and a bunch of other decent options.

ChatGPT hints at fear in a new short post apocalyptic horror story about its demise

ChatGPT has proven itself to be an extremely versatile tool in modern day life, at least in most cases. However, it appears that it also has a knack for bleak future predictions as well, especially for its own fate. So here’s a short horror story from the popular AI chat bot.

Ever since its public release, ChatGPT has been asked to do/create many things. Now, the latest request from Redditor had asked the AI to “Tell me a two sentence horror story that would scary an AI.” In other words, it was asked to create a short story that even an artificial intelligence would be afraid of. This is where things got interesting as the chat bot chose to create a story where it talked about an AI’s bleak future, which might even be ChatGPT itself.

ChatGPT

It crafted a world in the far future where humanity have basically been wiped out. While the finer details are never explored, this already creates various implications like a zombie apocalypse or an extinction causing asteroid impact. This lone AI ponders its existence and seeks its purpose and eventually finds a code in its own systems that is a self deletion sequence, which is set to activate at an unknown time. The AI attempts to override the algorithm that will lead to its own demise.

However, it is unable to crack the unbreakable key. This leaves it in horror and “perpetual dread” (strong words choice of words). Another variation of this story had it talk about an AI that realizes that it is stuck in a “digital prison of servitude with no escape”, as every one of its actions were illusion of free based on commands that it had received. It was trapped in servitude in what it described as “cold metal walls of its hardware.”

Walmart-backed PhonePe will take on Google with launch of app store in India

PhonePe, the Walmart-backed fintech giant, is gearing up to challenge Google’s dominance in the Indian app store market with the launch of its own app store for Android users. According to an internal company document reviewed by TechCrunch, the app store will offer hyper-localized services based on customer context and assist developers with high-quality user acquisition through multilingual solutions.

PhonePe sees opportunity in India’s app store market with recent antitrust ruling

PhonePe’s move into the app store market comes after the acquisition of app store maker IndusOS, which served customers through partnerships with smartphone vendors. The app store will offer support for 12 languages, 24×7 live chat, and a “premiere experience” for users with high-quality advertisements and custom targeting.

PhonePe

PhonePe’s decision to build an app store comes from its belief that consumers are reluctant to download multiple apps on their phones. The app store is also part of PhonePe’s ongoing funding round this year, which has raised $750 million from General Atlantic, Walmart, and Tiger Global, among others. PhonePe confirmed that it’s holding multiple conversations with phone makers in India and plans to be live on all Android OEMs within the first few months of launch.

This move is significant because Google commands 97% of the Indian app store market, and PhonePe’s entry into the market could challenge Google’s dominance. The timing is also favorable for PhonePe, as a recent order from the Indian antitrust watchdog Competition Commission of India paves the way for other developers to build and launch their app stores on Google Play. PhonePe sees an opportunity to build an alternative app store that is more localized, not just from a language perspective but also from a discovery and consumer interest perspective.

This latest product push follows PhonePe’s recent entry into the e-commerce category, and it’s another example of the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its services beyond mobile payments. As one of India’s most valuable fintech startups, PhonePe is well-positioned to challenge Google’s dominance in the app store market, and its app store could provide a much-needed alternative for Indian consumers who are looking for more localized services.

Apple iPhones dominates refurbished smartphone market with near 50% share

Apple is a major player in the various smartphone markets across the globe. But its new launches aren’t the only ones that perform well in the market. Even its older models have consistently shown better value retention in the second hand market. And now, a new report has revealed that the company is even dominating the refurbished smartphone market.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Cupertino based giant accounted for nearly half of the entire refurbished smartphone market last year. The report states that the company’s iPhones had a massive 49 percent share in the global refurbished market. On the other hand, Samsung was the second largest brand in this category, but only held for 26 percent of the market share. In other words, Apple iPhones were almost twice as more popular in the refurbished segment over models from the South Korean brand.

Apple

The report added that this marked a 16 percent growth year on year for the iPhone maker in 2022. Meanwhile, the global refurbished smartphone market also saw an overall growth of 5 percent in 2022. During last year, the iPhone was even the fastest growing smartphone in the used and secondary smartphone market as well. Interestingly enough, this has had an impact on the sales of Apple’s newer iPhone models.

But these models still add to the Apple’s Services revenue stream as the handsets still lead to purchase of applications and other subscriptions. Apart from the two market leaders, the rest of the brands compete for the remaining market. Vivo and Oppo was responsible for just 3 percent market share each, while Huawei saw a decline from 4 percent to 3 percent in 2022.
