Coolpad Cool 30 budget smartphone now up for pre-order in China; price starts at 699 yuan ($102)

Coolpad Cool 30, a new smartphone from the Chinese brand, is now available for pre-order in the company’s home market through online marketplace JD.com.

The phone comes in three options — 4GB + 64GB, 4GB + 128GB, and 6GB + 128GB, costing 699 yuan (~$102), 799 yuan (~$117), and 899 yuan (~$131), respectively.

The smartphone can be pre-ordered with a deposit of just 1 yuan, and those who pre-order the device will get a 100 yuan (~$15) discount on the final payment.

Coming to the specifications, the Coolpad Cool 3 features a 6.51-inch LCD panel with a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and a standard refresh rate of 60Hz. Under the hood, the device is powered by the MediaTek G85 processor, coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

In the camera department, there’s a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor and a 13-megapixel secondary sensor on the back panel, along with an LED flash. There’s also a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The device runs the Android operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own Cool OS 2.0 custom user interface on top. It is powered by a 4,500mAh battery and has a power-saving mode to extend the battery life.

The notebook’s audio system is also pretty decent.

The upgraded Intel Core i5-1335U processor in the Hummingbird Fun 2023 is an improvement over its predecessor and this translates into its performance. The Acer Hummingbird Fun 2023 notebook is available on pre-sale in China with a starting price of 3,999 yuan (~$582). The actual sale of the model will commence on April 17 and it can be purchased via different retail platforms in China like JD.com.

Samsung Galaxy F54 to launch in India in April with 108MP camera

Samsung has recently launched two new mid-range smartphones under the A series in India, but one can argue that they are not exactly affordable, with the Galaxy A54 starting at Rs. 38,999 in the country. However, the company may soon bring a more budget-friendly smartphone for Indian consumers, dubbed Galaxy F54. While there’s no official announcement yet, a recent report has indicated that the handset is expected to launch in April, and has also revealed some of its key specifications.

As reported on SlashLeaks, Samsung will be launching the Galaxy F54 in India by the end of April. There’s no confirmation from the brand yet but the timing seems reasonable as the device has already received various certifications, and its support page has gone live in both India and Bangladesh.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F54 is expected to feature its signature triple camera rings on the back, a design that the Korean company has been using consistently this year across its flagship S series phones as well as its more affordable A series devices.

As per the leak, the Samsung smartphone will sport a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The handset will boast a 32MP front-facing camera enclosed in a center punch hole.

In the rear camera department, the phone could get a 108MP main camera sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) support. There may also be an 8MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro shooter.  The Galaxy F54 5G will likely feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and run Android 13 out of the box and have a layer of One UI 5.1 on top. The phone will measure 8.4mm thick and weigh about 199 grams.

Garmin Edge 540 and Edge 840 GPS bike computers with solar options and e-bike compatibility unveiled

Garmin has unveiled two new bike computers – the Garmin Edge 540 and Garmin Edge 840. The models come in several variants including solar options and electric bike compatibility. The two models are generally compatible with regular bikes.

Garmin has continued to offer several products outside its traditional forte of smartwatches. It offers a range of cycling accessories and the new Edge 540/ 840 models follow that trajectory. The Garmin Instinct 2 and Instinct 2S smartwatches were just released a few days back. The two new Garmin bike computers have several similarities and the higher model sports a touchscreen. The two products are available with integrated solar cells at an extra cost of $100. The regular Edge 540/ 840 models offer up to 26 hours of battery life while the solar option yields up to 32 hours on a full charge.

The more versatile Edge 840 model has 32GB of storage while the Edge 840 has only 16GB. They both come with 2.6-inch displays and 246 x 322 pixels resolution. Both GNSS and GPS modules are present in the two Garmin Edge models. They are also compatible with Varia radar systems. The Garmin Edge 540 has a retail launch price of $349.99 while the Garmin Edge 840 launches at $449.99. The solar models are priced higher by $100 but they lack sensor bundles.

More details about the new Garmin Edge 540 and Edge 840 bike computers are available on the Garmin website. It is not clear at this time which markets will sell the models. These and more details will surface subsequently.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 rumoured to get Wear OS 3 upgrade soon

The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 is rumored to be among the models that will get the Wear OS 3 upgrade. Some reports have earlier hinted that Mobvoi may upgrade all its Snapdragon Wear 4100-based models to Wear OS 3. This seemed to contradict Mobvoi’s earlier position that only the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra and TicWatch E3 will receive a major OS update by the end of 2023.

The Wear OS 3 upgrade for the lineup of Mobvoi smartwatches holds lots of promise. It has been previously reported by Gadgets & Wearables that Mobvoi has notified TicWatch customers of the Wear OS 3 release schedule. The original TicWatch Pro 3 sports the same Snapdragon 4100 chipset as the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra and E3 models. The arrangement has been that all the other TicWatch Pro models will remain the same until the release of the TicWatch Pro 5.

A new clarification by Mobvoi has pointedly indicated that the TicWatch Pro 3 is eligible for an OS upgrade. There are no fine details yet on the release date for the Wear OS updates and Mobvoi says such information will be provided on its website. It is believed that the update to Wear OS 3 for Mobvoi smartwatches will roll in anytime soon. Mobvoi had previously pointed to Q3, 2023 as the take-off date. This may however be unrealistic with Wear OS 4 possibly being released by Google soon.

It is speculated that Google is in line to showcase Wear OS 4 next month during the I/O 2023 event. Other expected highlights of I/O 2023 are the release of Android 14 and the Google Pixel 7a. It remains to be seen how Mobvoi will navigate through the Wear OS 3 conundrum. The coming days will certainly provide greater clarity for the models.

Running these systems necessitates powerful computers that can process terabytes of data for extended periods. Additionally, they depend on significant computing power for generating text, images, or predictions.

The collaboration of hundreds of top-tier Nvidia GPUs is essential for training AI models, especially sizable ones like GPT. Microsoft has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in tens of thousands of Nvidia A100 chips for ChatGPT development. Nvidia currently holds a significant share of the AI chip market. Nvidia’s offerings also include the DGX supercomputer, which houses eight GPUs working together. The company announced new services earlier this year that enable businesses to rent DGX computers for $37,000 per month.

However, the system uses Nvidia’s older A100 processors at this price point. According to Nvidia, the H100 is the first chip tailored to the specific AI architecture responsible for numerous recent AI breakthroughs, known as transformers. According to a recent report by DigiTimes, Nvidia may be taking a strategic approach with its latest GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs based on the Ada Lovelace architecture. The company’s backend service providers, Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) and King Yuan Electronics (KYEC), have reportedly not seen increased orders for testing and packaging of the new GPUs. This suggests that Nvidia is waiting for its partners to sell off remaining GeForce RTX 30-series inventory before supplying them with the latest generation graphics chips.

Despite having introduced an extensive range of Ada Lovelace GPUs for client applications, including the AD102, AD103, AD104, AD106, and AD107, Nvidia has not signaled to its OSAT providers to scale up production for the GeForce RTX 40-series. The company had previously pre-paid TSMC for silicon manufacturing services during 2021-2022, and likely has N4-based Ada Lovelace wafers in stock. However, it still needs to book OSAT capacity before ramping up orders to increase supply.

Usually, Nvidia’s sales of GPUs to its partners trend upward in the third quarter, which should lead to the company booking OSAT services at this time. However, if the DigiTimes report is accurate, it seems that Nvidia is holding off on increasing testing and packaging of its Ada Lovelace silicon. Nvidia’s partners have already started shipping GeForce RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 graphics cards for desktops. Despite being among the top graphics cards available, demand for these products is reportedly not as high as Nvidia would like.

The market has also seen a variety of laptops equipped with GeForce RTX 4050, RTX 4060, RTX 4070, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs. With Ada Lovelace graphics processors already covering almost all market segments, the anticipated popularity of solutions like the GeForce RTX 4070 and the expected RTX 4060 suggests that Nvidia will need to increase GPU volume and packaging services.

Users online have different opinions on the topic, as some think that Big Tech like Microsoft and Google spend a lot of money to ensure that their preferred search result is shown to users, and that information is ranked down or restricted from users although it is available. 

On the other fence, some think that Bing’s proactive initiative to suggest calling for help is quite helpful, as some recount when their loved ones get a cancer diagnosis, they start looking at death rates to see how much they’ve got to live. OpenAI CEO clarifies company is not currently training ChatGPT-5

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, has confirmed that the company is not currently training a GPT-5 language model. Huawei HarmonyOS 4.0 to launch this fall, executive director confirms

The images show that the Razr Lite has a curved frame with antenna lines on it. The report has no information on the specifications or dimensions of the device.

Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics technology brand famously known for its globally best-selling smartphones, has expressed that the company is looking to make a foray into the automotive space with the brand’s first upcoming electric vehicle that is due to be announced in Chinese markets in 2024.

And recently, it was spotted in China’s national patent database that a “Xiaomi Car” patent technology was approved by the country’s regulatory body on April 11, 2023. The patent technology’s name was phrased in quite a direct manner, as the patent tech approved is called “Car (Practical Use)”, and filed by the Xiaomi Car Limited Company, which is a subsidiary of the Xiaomi Group based in Beijing.

The “Xiaomi Car” patent has some very fascinating and exciting details, as shared by ITHome, a tech news organisation in the country. Most notably, the Xiaomi Car will apparently have a transparent display embedded under the glass front windshield, which in simpler terms means you’ll have a transparent TV as your windshield.

This new transparent screen windshield patent technology sounds futuristic, and in the patent description, the tech is said to facilitate drivers to view vehicle information easier and improve driving safety. To illustrate, most vehicles have instrument panels or dashboards in front of the steering wheel, and drivers need to look down to see vehicle information clearly, which is not conducive to safe driving. The Xiaomi Car is slated to have the info you need to be displayed directly on the windshield screen, to keep your eyes on the road whilst displaying important data such as the vehicle speed, notifications, and EV battery charge data to you as well.

According to Xiaomi’s official plan, Xiaomi Cars will officially start mass production in 2024. In recent years, we’ve seen a lot of trends in camera styling, and it seems Chinese flagships launching in 2023 have settled for a round camera module. From what we’ve seen in leaked renders, the handset will get a circular camera module like its predecessor but this time there won’t be any bar accompanying it. There will be four cameras on the handset aligned in a somewhat squircle manner with the Leica branding in the center. It will likely have a soft leather-like finish on the rear.

Talking about the display, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will likely feature a curved panel with a center punch hole cutout for the selfie camera. The E6 AMOLED LTPO display will measure 6.7 inches E6 and offer a Quad HD+ resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. It will also have all sorts of HDR support, including DolbyVision. It will likely boast a 10-bit panel, capable of rendering 1 billion color gradations.

Cameras

The Xiaomi-Leica partnership has definitely helped the Chinese company step up its camera game, and the recent Xiaomi 13 Pro is the latest example of that. The upcoming Xiaomi 13 Ultra will only take things to a new level with its four-camera setup on the back. It will retain the 1″ Sony-made IMX989 sensor with phase detect autofocus. Notably, the handset uses the sensor’s entire area for image capture.

In addition, the smartphone will use a 50MP Ultra-wide, 50MP 3.2X Zoom with f/1.8 aperture, and a 50MP Periscope with 5X Zoom and f/3.0 aperture. The handset is rumored to support variable aperture, allowing you to switch to a slower aperture if you prefer to have more of the background in focus. Xiaomi says the device will get some advanced noise-reduction features and better HDR capabilities. It could get a 32MP sensor for selfies.

Xiaomi also claims that the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will last up to 60 minutes at 1% battery, however, in emergency mode.

The smartphone is expected to come with Android 13 OS and MIUI 14 preinstalled. Additionally, it is likely to be equipped with up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and a whopping 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. In terms of security, it will sport an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Expected Pricing

The exact pricing of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will only be known after the official launch. However, a recent report revealed the handset will come in three configurations, such as 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, and 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. These models could be priced at 6,299 Yuan (~$916), 6,799 Yuan (~$990), and 7,499 (~$1,090), respectively. The top-of-the-line 16GB RAM + 1TB storage trim may cost 7,999 Yuan (~$1,163).

Xiaomi’s latest Ultra phone will debut on April 18 with a Leica-tuned camera setup. Ahead of the release, the company has been teasing the smartphone’s features and the latest teasers shed some light on its battery performance. As per the announcement, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will arrive with self-developed Surge P2 and Surge G1 chips.

The information about the Surge G1 chip is scarce but we do know that Surge P2 is the successor of the Surge P1 chip found on the Xiaomi 12 series. The company noted that P1 helps in better heat management and improving charging efficiency.

The new chips will improve the phone’s battery. Xiaomi claims the phone will last for up to 60 minutes or support a 12-minute phone call even when the battery level drops to just 1%. However, this will only apply when the device is in Emergency Battery Mode.
