iOS 16.4.1 for iPhone released with critical security updates and fixes for emoji, Siri

Apple has released a new bug fix update, iOS 16.4.1, for iPhone users, which includes important security updates and fixes for bugs related to Siri and emoji. The update is available for all iPhone models that can run iOS 16, which includes the iPhone 8 and newer. The update size is 299.2 MB and comes with the build number 20E252.

Credit: 9to5mac

One of the main fixes in the update is related to the Pushing Hands emoji, which previously did not show skin tone variations. Additionally, some users reported issues with Siri not responding, which has also been addressed in this update.

Most importantly, iOS 16.4.1 includes fixes for two actively exploited security vulnerabilities: IOSurfaceAccelerator and WebKit. The former could have allowed an app to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges, while the latter could have led to arbitrary code execution when processing maliciously crafted web content. Apple is aware of reports that both of these issues may have been actively exploited.

Despite some recent outages with the Weather app, this update does not address any issues with the app, as most of the problems are server-side and can be resolved without the need for an iOS update.

iOS 16.4.1 release notes:

  • Pushing hands emoji does not show skin tone variations
  • Siri does not respond in some cases

iOS 16.4.1 security updates:

IOSurfaceAccelerator

  • Impact: An app may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
  • Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved input validation.

WebKit

  • Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
  • Description: A use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management.

Users can update their iPhones to iOS 16.4.1 by heading to the Settings app, choosing General, then choosing Software Update. It’s important to keep your iPhone up to date with the latest software updates to ensure the security and functionality of your device.

Here are the details.

A Realme smartphone with model number RMX3760 has appeared on Indonesia’s TKDN website. While there’s no info about the vanilla Realme 11, a recent TENAA listing revealed the Realme 11 Pro will come with a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that may have a 120Hz refresh rate. Meizu’s first foldable could rival Galaxy Z Fold 5 with its 200MP main camera

After making a comeback in the flagship smartphone market with the Meizu 20 series, it seems the Geely-owned company is now planning to throw its hat in the foldable phone category. Meizu’s vice president recently confirmed the company will launch a folding smartphone by the end of this year and we even saw a patent for the same. Now while we wait for more concrete information, a tipster has revealed the first Meizu foldable will arrive with a whopping 200MP main camera.

As per a screenshot shared by WHYLAB on Weibo, the upcoming Meizu foldable, likely to be called Meizu 20 Fold, will be equipped with a 200MP main shooter. The smartphone can be seen to be linked with the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, which is older than the latest HP2 found on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Nevertheless, the sensor is said to offer impressive capabilities like 8K recording, high-end pixel-binning, and fast auto-focus.

Meizu 20 Fold camera

This could give the Meizu 20 Fold an upper hand over the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5, at least in the camera department. But that’s just a far-fetched assumption because, without proper ISP and software to back it, even a 200MP camera sensor is barely useful over other sensors. The brand’s latest flagship— the Meizu 20 Pro— comes with up to 50MP main cameras, however, we can’t comment on its photography performance as of yet.

Meizu Foldable

Details about the Meizu foldable are pretty limited. A recent patent has suggested that it may take the form of a flip phone, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip models, and may come with a new hinge design. We should be learning more about the smartphone in the days to come. Stay tuned for the updates.

Right off the bat, the Vivo X Flip seems to be a tall phone with a large interior display. It has a slim profile and curved edges on all four sides. The back panel has an embossed diamond cut pattern and is in Purple color. The device is also expected to be offered in Black and Gold hues. There is a circular camera module at the top left corner of the back panel. It houses two sensors and an LED flash sits outside. The images also confirm the presence of ZEISS-branded cameras on the upcoming foldable phone.

Coming to the main aspect, the images reveal the Vivo X Flip with a horizontal display on the back panel. It is located just below the camera module and the screen stretches from one end to another with slightly curved corners. The secondary screen maxes out at the hinge where the phone folds.

This is everything we could spot about the Vivo X Flip from the official-looking images. Amazon grows diamonds for its future quantum computing & networking plans

Amazon is apparently looking to acquire diamond for its future plans in quantum computing and networking. The company is working in conjunction with a diamond miner for this move, so here are all the details.

The e-commerce giant is partnering up with known miners De Beers to develop the precious stone under laboratory conditions. These diamonds will be used to supposedly improve the speeds of quantum computing and networking. The project is being run by the tech giant’s Center for Quantum Networking as a part of its AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud service. So now, De Beers’ Element Six division is responsible for growing these diamonds to help improve their quantum networking speeds.

Amazon

For those unaware, the quantum computing is typically believed to be the next step in computing technology. Unlike the conventional binary system, this technology offers a whole new way to compute that underpin all our current digital technologies. Furthermore, the standard fiber optic infrastructure is also not fast enough to keep up with this technology. Thus, Amazon is looking to solve the problem by utilizing different materials like diamonds. In a year, Element Six will apparently produce around 2 million of these diamond components.

To explain the technology, quantum computing utilizes principle in quantum physics that subatomic particles that can be found in two places at the same time. So, quantum computers relies on qubits rather than bits. This means that quantum systems are theoretically much more powerful than any of the current generation of supercomputers. Thus, these new diamonds will be used to make signal repeaters to relay the information stored in qubits through networks. Thanks to the hardness, the diamonds will enable stabler transmission than traditional repeaters.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra might just be the USB 3.0 Xiaomi phone you’ve been dreaming of

Xiaomi has been lagging behind in USB technology, still sticking to the outdated USB 2.0 port on their phones. It’s quite puzzling why the brand hasn’t made the switch to USB 3.0, especially when other major players in the market like Samsung have already done so. However, there have been rumors swirling around since last year that Xiaomi has been testing USB 3.0 and it seems the upcoming Xiaomi 13 Ultra may be the first phone to feature this long-awaited upgrade.

According to a reliable source, Digital Chat Station, the upcoming Xiaomi 13 Ultra will come equipped with a USB 3.x port. If this information turns out to be true, it will mark the first time a Xiaomi smartphone includes this particular USB standard. Currently, only some gaming phones from Xiaomi’s sub-brand Black Shark support the USB 3.0 standard.

Xiaomi-12S-Ultra-review

This should mean a great deal for you as a consumer because USB 3.0 provides better speed and more efficient power management than USB 2.0. It also enables the capability to output high-resolution displays to HDMI. This can be particularly advantageous in various scenarios. For instance, when you want to present a slideshow or give a presentation on a larger screen without a separate adapter.

To remind you, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will debut in the global market this month. Just like last year’s Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the handset will offer a top-notch photography experience with a quad camera setup tuned by Leica. Powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, the handset will support both wired and wireless charging. It could have up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage and run Android 13 out of the box.

Google Enables WebGPU Tech for Next-Gen Browser Gaming

Google has announced that WebGPU, an API designed to give web apps greater access to your graphics card’s capabilities, will be enabled by default in Chrome 113. The release is scheduled for around three weeks from now, and WebGPU will be available on Windows PCs supporting Direct3D 12, macOS, and ChromeOS devices with Vulkan support. Here are the details…

Google is rolling out WebGPU tech for next-gen gaming in your browser

In a blog post, Google explained that WebGPU allows developers to achieve the same level of graphics with significantly less code while providing more than three times the improvements in machine learning model inferences. This breakthrough is especially relevant in the current age of generative AIs and large language models, opening up possibilities for advanced machine learning applications that take advantage of local hardware.

WebGPU technology can also enable developers to create better-looking games for your browser. Babylon.js, for instance, already has an impressive demo that can be run on the Chrome Beta. Google has described this month’s release as a “building block for future updates and enhancements,” with more advanced graphics features and deeper access to shader cores expected. Developers can also look forward to improvements in the development of content that runs on WebGPU.

The API has been under development since its conception in 2017, and it is not exclusive to Chrome. In the future, it is expected to be available in Firefox and Safari as well. Google is working on expanding its implementation to support more operating systems, including Linux and Android.

In other Chrome-related news, Google announced on Wednesday its plans to speed up future releases of the browser. While the stable releases’ schedule remains unchanged, Google aims to “feature freeze” them later, shortening the time between when developers stop adding new features to the build and when the general public receives the update. This change is expected to streamline the development process.

Samsung to stick with AMD for mobile GPUs despite Exynos 2200 disappointment

Back in 2021, AMD and Samsung co-developed an RDNA2-based GPU for Exynos chipsets, which debuted with the Exynos 2200, the chip that powered the Galaxy S22 series. Unfortunately, the chip didn’t quite live up to expectations. In fact, it was pretty underwhelming compared to its rival TSMC’s 5nm-class nodes. Despite this, AMD and Samsung have now announced that the two companies are renewing their GPU architecture licensing agreement for the Korean company’s Exynos SoCs.

Samsung previously made it clear that it will stick with AMD for mobile GPUs. And now, the South Korean company has signed a multi-year deal with AMD to continue licensing AMD’s Radeon graphics architectures for use in its Arm-based Exynos SoCs. The extension of the licensing agreement comes 4 years after Samsung and AMD announced their initial licensing agreement in June 2019.

Samsung AMD agreement

Based on what we know so far, the 2023 MagicBook 14 Edition is also being referred to as the “Trident”. According to Ola Zhuwang’s interpretation of this name, the first prong could signify the long lasting aspect of the new laptop, while the other two might showcase its performance or Honor’s smart interconnection. Unfortunately, this is all the information we have regarding the upcoming 2023 MagicBook 14 laptop model.

As the name suggests, we can expect the new laptop will likely feature a 14 inch display. The previous models offered up to 2.1K resolution, 300 nits of peak brightness, and 100 percent sRGB color gamut as well. Furthermore, Honor has offered both AMD and Intel powered models in the past, so we can expect either the latest Ryzen 7000 series or Intel Core 13th Gen processors to power the laptops.
