Twitter CEO Elon Musk Says He’s Open To Buying Silicon Valley Bank

Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), one of the largest banks in the US, has been shut down by regulators, and its assets were seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The bank primarily serviced customers in the technology industry, including tech workers, startups, and venture capital-backed companies. Its closure marks the largest US bank failure since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Elon Musk

The FDIC has created the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara to hold the insured deposits from SVB, which will continue to clear checks. The main office and all branches of SVB will reopen on March 13, and insured depositors will have full access to their deposits no later than Monday morning. However, it is unclear how larger accounts or credit lines for companies will be impacted by the closure as FDIC’s standard insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor.

Amidst the turmoil, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan suggested that Twitter should consider buying SVB and turning it into a digital bank. This suggestion caught the attention of Twitter chief Elon Musk, who responded positively, saying that he is open to the idea.

This potential acquisition could mark Twitter’s entry into the fintech space, as the company has been exploring ways to expand its business. By acquiring SVB, Twitter could leverage its large user base and strong brand to establish itself as a major player in the digital banking industry. As of writing this story, there’s no official confirmation or further information regarding this comment from the billionaire.

SVB specialized in financing start-ups and had become the 16th largest US bank by assets, with $209 billion in assets and approximately $175.4 billion in deposits. The bank’s problems were sparked by customer withdrawals that led the company to liquidate securities positions whose values had plummeted due to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes. Its rapid collapse has left markets rattled, and the FDIC will seek to liquidate its assets while insured depositors will receive an advanced dividend and potential additional dividend payments as the regulator gradually sell SVB’s assets.

Huawei Expected to Rollout HarmonyOS 3.1 Publicly in April

Huawei is preparing to release its highly anticipated HarmonyOS 3.1 software update, following a successful developer beta test in the P50 and Mate 50 series. Reports suggest that the progress of HarmonyOS 3.1 development has been rapid, and the company is on track to launch the software as early as April.

HarmonyOS 3.1 is set to bring major improvements to the overall fluency of the software, with new animations and fluid movements in the control panel and notification panel. Additionally, Huawei has added new options for media management and has enhanced the shape selection of its widgets.

HarmonyOS 3.1 features the ArkTS development language, which is based on TypeScript (TS) and matches the ArkUI framework. This framework is used for building distributed app interfaces that can be adapted to different platforms and devices. Furthermore, the Ark compiler has been improved to enable faster and more efficient app development.

Huawei is expected to launch the P60 series as the first recipient of the HarmonyOS 3.1 software, with a flagship launch later this month. This will be followed by the public release of the software for older devices, starting with the Mate 50 and P50 series, before rolling out to other models.

Overall, HarmonyOS 3.1 is expected to be a significant upgrade over its predecessor, promising faster and more fluid performance, better app development tools, and an improved user experience. Huawei’s continued investment in software development is likely to further cement its position as a major player in the smartphone market.

You Can Now Pre-order iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in Yellow

Earlier this week, Apple announced a new yellow color option for the iPhone 14 and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus. The new shade looks interesting and it reminds us of the OG Lumia 1020, which carried yellow like no other. Both iPhone models are now available for pre-order, with availability starting on Tuesday, March 14. Here are the details.

Starting today, the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can be pre-ordered in more than 60 countries, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, and the U.K. The phones will be available in stores on March 14. In case you’re wondering – there are no new color options for the iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max.

iPhone 14 Plus

The yellow iPhone 14 starts at $799 and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899, and each device comes with the same set of specifications you get from the original phones. The new Yellow shade joins the iPhone models’ existing Midnight, Starlight, (PRODUCT)RED, Blue, and Purple color options.

The design of the iPhones remains the same. There’s the iconic camera island and Apple logo on the back. On the front, we see Apple’s signature notch and a flat display. The yellow shade looks quite…uhh yellow and appears fun and energetic.

iPhone 14 Plus

It is worth noting that Apple typically introduces new color options for the iPhone midway through the device’s product cycle, often in the spring season, to give a boost to sales. For instance, last year in March, Apple released new Green color options for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, and new Alpine Green color options for the iPhone 13 Pro models. And in April 2021, the company added Purple to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini color choices.

Apple Music is Going Classical

Apple Music is a popular music streaming service that was launched in 2015 by Apple Inc. It provides users with access to millions of songs, playlists, and music videos, all available on demand. Users can also listen to live radio stations, curated playlists, and exclusive content from their favourite artists. The service is available on various devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, and it requires a monthly subscription fee. The company’s latest addition to the Apple Music family is definitely interesting, with the service entering the realm of classical music.

Apple Music

While it shares many similarities with Apple’s existing service, such as high-quality streaming up to 192 kHz/24 bit lossless formats, exclusive content, comprehensive search options, and the signature Apple UI layout, it’s dedicated to music styles like those of Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms. The app is set to launch later this month and will be free to download, but requires an Apple Music subscription (except for the Voice Plan) to use. It will be exclusively available on iOS (15.4 or newer). An Android version will be available soon enough.

It’s worth noting that Apple’s move to launch Music Classical may be a strategic response to Spotify’s recent introduction of its major UI overhaul. The new Home feed and “experience,” unveiled at the Stream On conference, features an increased number of previews, shortcuts, and discovery-friendly feed items, along with recommendations, all in portrait mode. While Spotify has yet to confirm when this new user interface will be rolled out to Premium and Free users worldwide, it’s expected to be released soon as well. The company also recently rolled out its plus button update that replaces the heart button originally present in the old Spotify version.

The latest piece of information, however, states that even though the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 will be priced higher than average, they will be introduced in specific niche regions with much lower price tags. The pricing of these devices for the Indonesian market is revealed in the report.

Samsung Galaxy A54

The former is rumoured to cost Rp 4,999,000 ($323) for the 8GB+128GB variant, while the latter may cost Rp 5,999,000 ($388) for the same variant. Furthermore, the 256GB variants of these handsets are claimed to cost Rp 5,999,000 ($388) and Rp 6,499,000 ($420), respectively.

Google is Changing the Way Pixel Users Exit the Android Beta Program

Pixel fans are always Google has announced that it will launch the beta program for the June Feature Drop on March 13th, 2023. Pixel users who are on the QPR2 Beta will automatically receive Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 next week if they don’t exit the program by March 13th. However, the big news is that Google is changing the way to exit the Beta program without wiping the phone.

Google Pixel 7

Previously, if users were going to exit the Android 13 QPR2 Beta program, they had to install the stable version of QPR2 before opting out of the Beta program. But now, if they want the stable version of QPR2, they will need to exit the Beta program first. To do this, before March 13th, users will need to go to www.google.com/android/beta and click on the rectangle that says “View your eligible devices.” They will then be taken to an image of their Pixel device with the words “Opt out” underneath. Once they tap on the button, that’s pretty much it. As long as users ignore all the other downgrade buttons, opting out will not force them to wipe their phones. However, users will still have to wait for the stable version of the QPR2 update (the March Feature Drop) to be released later this month.

If users refuse to opt out, they won’t receive the stable version of QPR2. If they can’t wait to return to the latest public version, they can simply tap on “downgrade OTA update,” but be warned that doing this will force users to wipe their phones. If they do nothing, users will receive the QPR3 Beta 1 update on Monday and they will be forced to stick with the Beta program until June 5th when the June Feature Drop should be released by Google, unless users want to wipe their phones clean. This is a significant change, and Google wants to make sure that users don’t accidentally wipe their data, so they are taking all the steps to cover their bases.

New Google Pixel 7 Bug Doesn’t Let Users Save Zoomed-in Pictures

Since the launch of the Google Pixel 7, the phone has received rave reviews from critics with regard to its camera setup. The device constantly grabs headlines in the tech space whenever the topic of the best smartphone cameras comes up. However, Pixel devices are also infamous for being home to various bugs occasionally. In the past, users have faced bugs such as the camera app freezing, and another bug causing auto-rotate and tap-to-wake to stop working. As per reports, the latest bug doesn’t let users save images that they capture while they are zoomed in on the camera app.

Google Pixel 7

Pixel smartphones have encountered a bug that prevents users from saving photos taken while using periscope zoom, with reports coming in from various users of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro phones. When users take a photo using periscope zoom and try to save it, the camera app hesitates for a while, but ultimately nothing happens. It has been found that the issue occurs with phones that have version 8.7.250.494820638.44 of the Google Camera app, and is likely due to HDR functionality.

However, there is no real danger, and users need not worry about anything serious, such as their phones freezing or spontaneously combusting. Google has not yet commented on the issue, but a fix is expected to be available soon. The company might even ship the fix with the new QPR2 update (or the feature drop) coming later this month,  While Pixel phones have had a few bugs in the past, their ever-growing list of features continues to make them some of the best Android phones available.

Microsoft is Investing in Algae To Reduce Carbon Footprint

The big tech industry has seen massive growth in recent years, with companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft leading the way. However, this growth has come at a cost to the environment, as the carbon footprint of these companies continues to increase. The energy required to power the massive data centers that support their services, as well as the energy consumed by their employees and customers, are major contributors to their carbon emissions. Despite efforts to transition to renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency, the scale and speed of their operations make it difficult to fully mitigate their impact on the environment. As a result, it is important for big tech companies to prioritize sustainability and reduce their carbon footprint in order to mitigate the negative effects of their operations on the planet. Microsoft is one of those companies.

Microsoft

As one of the tech industry giants, Microsoft faces an alarming carbon pollution problem, which is only escalating despite its commitment to becoming carbon negative by 2030. In response, the company has sought out Running Tide, an organization that specializes in mitigating the environmental impact of large-scale corporations. Running Tide, which has previously worked with Stripe and Shopify, intends to tackle Microsoft’s carbon emissions by utilizing the ocean as a carbon sink.

The plan is to grow kelp, or algae, on biodegradable buoys, which will absorb carbon dioxide before sinking to the ocean floor. Although this is a relatively new process, Running Tide has stated that it has removed less than 1,000 tons of carbon in research and test deployments, with the goal of removing up to 12,000 tons over two years for Microsoft alone. While the carbon removal industry is still in its early stages, the innovative approach taken by Running Tide has the potential to significantly reduce Microsoft’s carbon footprint, despite concerns from some scientists about the potential impact on ocean ecosystems.
