XPeng Launches New S4 Fast Charging Stations for EVs in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China

XPeng has just announced that it is launching its first batch of S4 super fast charging stations for electric vehicles in China. Earlier today (17th February 2023), the company rolled out these new EV charging stations in two major cities.

XPeng

The Chinese smart electric vehicle maker had first introduced their S4 super fast charging stations for EVs back in 2022. And now, the company is finally releasing the first batch of these EV charging stations in the city of Shenzhen and Guangzhou. This wasn’t the only milestone since the brand also announced that it has managed to launch more than a 1,000 self operated charging stations that cover all prefecture level administrative regions and municipalities across the region.

As of right now, XPeng Motors has 58 charging stations in Shenzhen, out of which 5 are the new S4 super fast charging stations, 22 of these are its self operated charging stations (including its S4), and a total of 36 for its third party charging stations. On the other hand, it has a total of 79 charging stations in Guangzhou, out of these 6 are S4 super fast charging stations, 52 self operated XPend charging stations (includes S4 models as well), and 27 from third party charging stations.

Xpeng

In other words, the electric vehicle manufacturer is clearly focusing on expanding its network, which would help EV owners and prospective buyers in the future. With such a robust network in China, XPeng car owners can rest easy with the vast number of charging stations during trips between these cities as well.

Over 300,000 Tesla EVs Pose Crash Risk says Report

More than 300,000 Tesla EVs are subject to crash risk, says the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to the report, there is a problem with the Full Self-driving (FSD) beta software rolled out in Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.

US authorities have now decided to recall 362758 Tesla EVs. However, the vehicles won’t be actually recalled to a service center instead, the company will roll out a software update that would fix the problem. Authorities said that the over-the-air (OTA) update will happen by April 15. Tesla said that the OTA updates will improve how FSD Beta negotiates certain driving maneuvers and will help to solve the issue.

source: Tesla

NHTSA opened an in-depth investigation on Tesla’s Autopilot system in August 2021. The regulatory authority said that it was a kind of investigation that required a lot of resources, and technical and legal expertise and covered more than 830000 vehicles. The regulatory authority also showed its concern for a December Tweet where CEO Elon Musk agreed to a suggestion of removing the ‘steering wheel nag,” an alert that instructs drivers to hold the wheel to confirm they are paying attention.

For years US authorities have been imploring Tesla to make better safety features for its EVs. Musk himself had admitted that crashes due to the autopilot system, stem more due to the company’s attitude towards the problem rather than technical difficulties.

What is the problem with Tesla FSD?

Recently, in a stock Exchange filing, Tesla informed that there were some glitches in its self-driving system. It said that the FSD may allow the vehicle to act unsafe around intersections and may make mistakes while proceeding through steady yellow traffic lights. The EVs also showed some issues when they had to travel straight through an intersection from a turn lane.

Between May 2019 to September 2022, Tesla received more than 18 warranties some of which may be related to the conditions mentioned above. However, the company said that it was not aware of any incidents or deaths due to this particular self-driving software issue.

Tesla has not yet made an official statement regarding the recall. However, CEO Elon Musk, shared a tweet showing his contempt for the word recall.

What is Tesla Autopilot System?

Tesla Autopilot is a bunch of advanced driver-assistance features, offered by the company to its vehicles. The Autopilot system conforms to the Level 2 SAE International Vehicle Automation standards and offers functions like lane centering, self-parking, traffic-aware cruise control, auto lane change, semi-autonomous limited navigation and automatically getting the car from the garage or parking spot.

All Tesla Vehicles come with these standard driver-assist features. However, the company offers its advanced fully autonomous FSD system for an additional price of $15000. With the FSD in place, owners can get extra features like automatic speeding and slowing down, and making turns which is not available in the standard autopilot system. Currently, Tesla FSD remains a Level 2 advanced-driver assistance system which requires the driver to remain fully engaged while the vehicle is in motion.

The company is now rolling out FSD Hardware 4.0 which will make Tesla cars the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world. Though the company has not shared many details about FSD 4.0, experts are saying that the upgrades may include a generation 4 complex vehicle control system (Autopilot), a new computer that is going to be 4 times more powerful than the one available in FSD 3 and a new GNSS antenna for navigation. The upgrades may also include changes to the Automatic Dipped and Main Beam Sensor, unification of Model X brake system application, new stay arm for Model X interior rear-view mirror, update to the manufacturer’s engine code, update to the vehicle’s rear badging, an increased speed limit.

Step-by-Step Guide: Enabling Battery Bypass on Samsung Galaxy Devices

It’s been some time since Samsung introduced the Galaxy S23 with exciting new features and hardware. It is kind of impossible to replicate new hardware on its predecessors, but Samsung has surely introduced all the new software features for old flagship Galaxy Smartphones. We are talking about the much-touted Bypass Battery or Pause USB Power Delivery feature that allows bypassing battery while playing games on Galaxy S23.

Must See: Some Samsung Galaxy S23 Users Struggle with Android Auto Issues

Samsung has been slowly rolling out the Battery Bypass feature to compatible devices over the past couple of days. Several high-end and mid-range smartphones such as the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Galaxy A73 are at the receiving end.

Explained – Battery Bypass Feature

The Pause USB Power Delivery feature is not new for Samsung Galaxy Smartphones. It was a part of the Samsung Galaxy Flagship device until the recent past. Well, the feature is also known as Battery Bypass terminates the battery charging and inputs power directly to the SoC. It is quite useful while doing CPU or GPU-intensive tasks as Battery Bypass shifts the power directly to SoC, instead of charging the battery. The process safeguards the battery’s aggressive charge and discharge, ultimately reducing the heating issue and improving the overall performance.

However, this feature is limited to use only while playing games on Samsung Galaxy Phones. The user needs to download or enable the Game Booster on the smartphone to get these new features. Below are the steps to enable the battery bypass feature on Galaxy Phones:

Steps to enable Battery Bypass on Samsung Galaxy Phone

It is quite an easy and straightforward process that you can perform in the span of 2-3 minutes. However, make sure you have a 25W PD charger as we need to connect it while using the Battery Bypass feature.

  1. Download and Install the Game Booster (v5.0.03.0) on your Galaxy smartphone from the Galaxy Store.
  2. Now, Connect your device to a charger. (Note: Your device should support 25W Superfast charging and the adapter should also be of output more than 25W. )
  3. Open any Game via the Game Launcher app.
  4. Minimize your game, open the Game Launcher app, tap on three vertical dots at the top-right corner, and select Game Booster.
  5. Now, Game Booster Settings will open, where you have to toggle the Pause USB Power Delivery feature.
  6. Once enabled, you can start enjoying the game again by bypassing the battery.
  7. It will automatically turn off once you minimize or exit the game, or even if you unplug the charger.

However, as per reports from Sammobile and YouTube NL Tech, the feature allows the phone to fetch power as required from the adapter. During the test, the phone was using 15W to 20W power while playing some games. However, the value was around 6W while playing Call of Duty Mobile on the Galaxy S22+.

Toolformer: The Language Model by Meta That Can Teach Itself To Use External Tools

In recent years, language models have taken the field of natural language processing by storm, but even the most advanced ones have their limitations. They struggle with basic tasks such as arithmetic and fact-checking. However, a new AI language model named Toolformer, developed by researchers at Meta, promises to change that.

Machine Learning

Toolformer is different from other language models, such as ChatGPT, since it can essentially teach itself to use external tools such as search engines, calculators, and calendars. This is possible thanks to the use of APIs, short for Application Programming Interfaces. Toolformer can use APIs to access information from a variety of external software tools, including language translators and factual references.

During training, Toolformer was given a small set of human-written examples that demonstrated how each API is utilized, and it was then allowed to annotate a large language modeling dataset. It did this in a “self-supervised” way. The model learned to predict each text-based API call as if they were any other form of text. When in operation, it can insert the calls as required and even self-sufficiently decide which tool to use (and how to use it).

Toolformer’s API-calling ability enables it to work around limitations in other language models, such as arithmetic. For example, if a user wants an LLM-based assistant to add a date to their calendar, Toolformer could handle that task by using an API link to a calendar app.

Toolformer is built on a pre-trained GPT-J model with 6.7 billion parameters. Various experiments conducted on a variety of tool-oriented concluded that Toolformer is a far better performer than the much larger GPT-3 model. It is worth noting that the GPT-3 model has more than 175 billion parameters.

While integrating external tools into language models is not a new concept, most existing approaches have relied on large amounts of human annotations or have been limited to specific task-specific settings. Toolformer, on the other hand, can learn to use a range of tools in a generalized way that does not require specialized training for specific tasks. However, there will always be a small risk that such language models might accidentally invoke the wrong tools or cause harm to user data. Nevertheless, Toolformer is a promising step in the right direction for the field of natural language processing.

Windows 11 is Now Officially Supported on M1 and M2-based Macs

Tech giant Microsoft has announced a new way to run Windows 11 on ARM-based Macs, albeit with some restrictions. In an official support article, Microsoft has authorized the use of Parallels Desktop 18 to run the ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on M1– and M2-based Macs. Although this is great news for those who need to use Windows for work, users should be aware of some limitations.

Windows 11

For one, you won’t be able to run 32-bit ARM apps since Microsoft is phasing out 32-bit software for all ARM Windows builds. Furthermore, you’ll need Windows 11 ARM drivers for devices to work properly. Additionally, users won’t be able to use anything that relies on another layer of virtualization, such as Android applications, the Linux subsystem, and Windows Sandbox. Lastly, games that require at least DirectX 12 or OpenGL 3.3 won’t work at all.

In 2021, it was possible to run Windows 11 in Parallels on ARM Macs, but users needed to use an Insider preview of the OS at the time. However, with the sanctioned approach, users can download and install Windows 11 with ease on Parallels Desktop 18. This will ease a lot of tension around licensing for the company, but it’s still unclear how these changes will affect Microsoft.

This news won’t be too useful for users who want native Windows support like they had with Intel-based Macs running Apple’s Boot Camp. However, it might be the closest thing to a collaboration between Apple and Microsoft, and it may be a viable solution for those who absolutely need to use Windows productivity apps. While it won’t offer the same performance or compatibility as a PC built for Windows on ARM, it’s the most viable option for those who need to use Windows on their ARM-based Mac.

Based on a CAD model provided by a reliable case manufacturer and a 3D artist, these renders give us a glimpse of the upcoming flagship device from Apple. The CAD files, like the one used in creating these renders, are provided by Apple to factories in Asia to prepare phone cases ahead of launch. This ensures that cases are available to consumers when the device is launched.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max

What’s new? Well, as previously speculated, we will be saying goodbye to Apple’s proprietary connector, the Lightning port, and hello to USB-C. This change marks a major shift in the design and features of the iPhone, all thanks to the pressure from the European Union, which has been pushing for a common charging standard for all smartphones and devices.

But that’s not all. The iPhone 15 Pro has undergone a significant design overhaul. As per the renders, the curvature of the edges, both on the glass and on the metal frame, has been updated to create a more seamless transition to the frame. This could make the phone more comfortable to hold and less prone to accidental touches.

The camera bump on the back is also thicker than before, indicating that Apple may have upgraded the camera system with new sensors or lenses. The camera layout remains similar to the iPhone 14 Pro, with three lenses and a LiDAR scanner arranged in a square module. The camera lenses are thicker in this generation, likely hinting at larger image sensors.

There are also changes to the volume rockers and the mute switch. The volume rockers look like capacitive buttons instead of physical ones, as speculated previously. The mute switch also looks redesigned, with a smaller and rounder shape similar to that of the capacitive buttons.

While we can’t say for sure, the resolution of the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to be similar to that of the iPhone 14 Pro. The body of the device is slightly smaller with thinner bezels, so it’s likely we’ll see the same 6.1-inch or a slightly larger display in a smaller body. The Dynamic Island is still present and looks to be about the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro.

Of course, these renders are based on an early CAD model and may not reflect all aspects of Apple’s final design. But they do give us an idea of what we can expect from one of this year’s most anticipated smartphones. With a more ergonomic frame, an updated camera system, and USB-C, the iPhone 15 Pro is sure to make waves in the smartphone industry.

OnePlus Ace 2 Dimensity Edition Smartphone to Reportedly Launch Soon

OnePlus, which recently launched the OnePlus Ace 2 smartphone in its home country China, is now gearing up to launch yet another Ace series model in the Chinese market.

According to the latest report, the OnePlus Ace 2 smartphone will soon get a new model powered by the MediaTek Dimensity processor instead of Qualcomm’s chipset.

The report claims that the OnePlus Ace 2 Dimensity Edition will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor. Further, the phone’s screen will be replaced by a 1.5K flat-screen display. It is also expected to be a bit cheaper than the current model.

This will be the first time OnePlus adopts Dimensity 9000 SoC in the Ace lineup. The chipset, which was announced last year, is a flagship offering from MediaTek, manufactured by TSMC using a 4nm process.

Apart from the processor and display, everything else will remain the same as the standard model. It features a 6.74-inch AMOLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution with 2772 × 1240 pixels, 1450 nits of peak brightness, 100 percent DCI P3 color gamut, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz.

The device, currently available in the market, is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. It comes with 5177mm² eight channel heat dissipation VC cooling, which the company claims is based on an exclusive black technology for an improved heat dissipation that is twice as effective as typical VC liquid cooling mechanisms.

In the camera department, there’s a 50-megapixel primary Sony IMX890 sensor that supports OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and has a 1/1.56-inch size and f/1.8 aperture. It is paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 2-megapixel macro camera. On the front side, the phone features a 16-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The smartphone runs the Android 13 operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own ColorOS 13 custom user interface on top. It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 100W SuperVOOC charging.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Is Stepping Down; Neal Mohan To Take Over

Susan Wojcicki, who is YouTube’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and one of the most prominent women in Silicon Valley, has announced that she is stepping down from her role at the world’s most popular video-sharing platform.

In a letter to employees, she says that she will start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects. Wojcicki will still be involved with Google and Alphabet moving forward but in an advisory role.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki

Susan Wojcicki has been a significant part of Google ever since the company was formed. In the early days of Google, the company was headquartered in Ms. Wojcicki’s garage. Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are her personal friends, and after becoming one of the earliest employees of the company, she climbed the ranks and became responsible for YouTube after its acquisition by Google, making the video platform one of the world’s largest social media companies.

Neal Mohan, who is YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, will take over her responsibilities. Interestingly, Mohan will be the Senior Vice-President and Head of YouTube rather than the CEO. He helped to launch YouTube TV, YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts and has also led the platform’s trust and safety team.

Talking about Neal Mohan, Wojcicki says, “with all we’re doing across Shorts, streaming and subscriptions, together with the promises of AI, YouTube’s most exciting opportunities are ahead, and Neal is the right person to lead us.”

Among her earlier roles, she was the first product manager of AdSense and also played a role in the earliest Google Doodles. She encouraged the company to acquire YouTube and, years later, was leading the platform as its CEO. YouTube has now become an important part of Google and Alphabet, accounting for over 10 percent of the company’s total revenue last year.
