Anker Finally Admits That Its Eufy Security Camera Are Not Natively Encrypted

Anker has finally admitted to a major accusation regarding its Eufy security camera. So now, the company has come clean regarding some of its “always encrypted” Eufy cameras not producing encrypted streams all of the times. So here are all of the details.

The Verge has been attempting to get a statement from the company, although, it deflected any form of communication while also ignoring its emails. However, when cornered against the wall, the brand finally admitted that its Eufy security cameras are not natively end to end encrypted. In other words, they are able and sometime did produce unencrypted video streams for Eufy’s web portal. This is similar to the ones that were accessed by The Verge from across the US using an ordinary media player.

Anker

However, Anker claims that it has now largely fixed this issue. The company stated that every video stream request originating from Eufy’s web portal will now be end to end encrypted same as they are on the Eufy’s app. Furthermore, the company is now working on updating its every single Eufy camera to use WebRTC, which is encrypted by default. Although, these cameras can still produce unencrypted footage upon request.

Lastly, Anker also issued an apology for the lack of communication and has promised to do better in the future. It has also confirmed that it is bringing in a third part security testing company, which is a “leading and well known security expert”. This is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

Google Pixel 2 Gets a Taste of Android 13 With LineageOS 20 Custom ROM

Custom ROMs have been a point of interest for smartphone enthusiasts for a long time now. Users install custom ROMs to revitalize their aging smartphones. Many Android manufacturers promise up to four years of OS updates, but this is often limited to newer devices. Older phones often get left behind after a few updates. Custom ROMs can give new life to perfectly usable but outdated phones.

Take the Google Pixel 2, for instance. Launched in 2017 with Android 8.0 Oreo, the device received its last security update in December 2020 and was no longer supported by the company. However, if your Pixel 2 is still working well and its performance fits your needs, you can try Android 13 with LineageOS 20.

LineageOS 20

The first LineageOS 20 build, based on Android 13 QPR1, was released on the final day of 2022. The initial list of supported devices was small, but the team has since expanded its roster. With the latest build, LineageOS 20 now supports the following devices:

  • Google Pixel 2
  • Google Pixel 2 XL
  • Nubia Z17
  • Nubia Z18 Mini
  • BQ Aquaris X
  • BQ Aquaris X Pro

The custom ROM is also available for two Android TV boxes, the Askey Google ADT-3 Developer Kit and the Dynalink TV Box. Simply visit the LineageOS Wiki pages for the respective device to find the installation steps and download links for the Custom ROM.

Lastly, the Pixel 2 isn’t the only Android phone to receive support from the custom ROM community. The Galaxy S3 and Note 2 were given a taste of Android 13 just months after its release. These examples from the custom ROM community show that the art of creating custom ROMs is alive and well, and people who are still attached to their old smartphones can use them without any snags or complaints.

An All-screen Apple Foldable Notebook Is in the Works, Could Launch in 2025

Apple might be entering a new phase of its product lineup, as each new leak brings forth a new angle to Apple’s approach to folding devices. Now, a new rumor has emerged regarding Apple’s latest product development – a foldable notebook with a 20.5-inch display. According to display analyst Ross Young, this cutting-edge device could be launched as early as 2025.

Apple Logo

As per a recent speculation, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed the tech giant was developing a foldable iPad for 2024. However, Young and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman disputed this notion and stated there are no signs of such a product being launched in the near future.

This is not the first time the rumors of an all-screen foldable MacBook have made headlines, as Young shared similar information in February 2022. He stated that Apple was in talks with suppliers about foldable notebooks with displays around 20 inches in size.

Today’s report suggests that Apple is still pursuing its foldable notebook idea, which would allow users to either use a full-size on-screen keyboard when folded or connect an external keyboard when unfolded. Young has previously referred to this product as an “all-new product category” for Apple.

Unlike current Mac notebooks that feature a single display with a keyboard and trackpad, this dual display design is expected to be a game-changer. The exact positioning of the rumored 20-inch Apple foldable, whether as an ‌iPad‌, Mac, or a new product category, is still unclear. However, multiple sources seem to agree that 2024 may be too early for such a cutting-edge device. It will be interesting to see how the American Technology company markets its new line of foldable products in the future, since folding devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are already becoming a market norm.

The listing states that the phone comes with Oxygen OS 13.0. The global version also possesses certification for supporting Wi-Fi 7. The Wi-Fi 6E version is also included. The FCC listing also includes a design schematic of the phone, which illustrates how many antennae are installed inside the device in addition to the previously mentioned information. As for the dimensions, the OnePlus 11 measures 163.1 x 74.1 mm, while it diagonally measures 171.65mm.

The Periscope Camera Will Be Exclusive to Apple’s iPhone 15 and 16 Ultra

Speculations are all over the internet surrounding the iPhone 15, the next iteration in Apple’s smartphone series. Latest leaks suggest that the much-anticipated periscope camera will finally make an appearance in Apple’s premium iPhone lineup, but with a catch. According to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the periscope camera will be exclusive to only one model in the next two cycles: the iPhone 15 Ultra and the iPhone 16 Ultra.

Apple iPhone 14 Camera

This news comes as a surprise to many in the tech industry, who had previously expected the periscope camera to be included in both iPhone 16 Pro models. The periscope lens, which allows for a longer optical zoom, is a game-changer for smartphone photography. With the help of a folded lens design, the periscope camera can fit a longer zoom into a smaller space, resulting in a much higher zoom without digital cropping.

As for the supplier of the periscope lenses, Kuo predicts that Apple will turn to alternative suppliers like Largan and Genius, instead of Samsung. The choice of the iPhone 15 Ultra as the exclusive recipient of the periscope camera may impact revenue projections for the companies that provide the lenses, but the exact reason for this decision remains unknown.

It should be noted that the name “iPhone 15 Ultra” is merely a placeholder, and Apple’s naming scheme may change in the future. Past leaks have also suggested that the iPhone 15 will feature a rounded body, which will be a big change for the lineup since Apple hasn’t refreshed the iPhone’s design in quite some time. Apart from design changes, the newest iPhones will also feature a USB Type-C port – an update that has been long awaited by Apple consumers. Kuo has been providing leaks regarding Apple’s future plans for quite a while now, so the periscope camera leaks might actually be spot-on. However, consumers will have to wait for the launch of the iPhone 15 until September if Apple follows its traditional release timeline.

Mercedes Benz Becomes First Certified Level-3 Autonomous Company in the US, Beats Tesla

As the race for autonomous vehicles heats up, auto-manufacturing companies are striving to be the first to bring high-level autonomous technology to the market. It appears that Mercedes has emerged victorious in a crucial competition against Tesla, securing its position as the first certified Level-3 autonomous car company in the United States.

Mercedes Logo

Level-3 autonomy, also known as conditional automation, is designated as the third level of driving automation by the Society of Automotive Engineers, and it enables cars to drive themselves in certain situations. The driver doesn’t have to operate the steering wheel and pedals, but they must still be alert and ready to take control at any moment. A large number of auto-manufacturing companies have been fiercely competing to become the first Level-3-autonomy car company, with Tesla and its full self-driving feature being a strong contender from the beginning. However, the company was ultimately unable to secure the necessary certifications.

It is still unclear who would bear legal responsibility in the event of an accident – the driver or the car manufacturer. This makes Level-3 autonomy a controversial topic. Currently, only the state of Nevada in the US has approved this project. Dimitris Psillakis, CEO and Head of Marketing & Sales North America at Mercedes-Benz USA, expressed pride in the company’s unwavering commitment to innovation.

Drive Pilot technology is at the helm of Mercedes’ success, which seamlessly integrates various technologies, including cameras, GPS, LiDAR, radar, ultrasound sensors, and audio mics to ensure safe autonomous driving. Drive Pilot is currently only available in the latest S-Class and EQS Sedan models. While Level-3 autonomy is just one milestone in the journey towards fully autonomous driving, Mercedes’ achievement sets a new standard for the industry and shows that this technology is now a tangible reality.

Poco is gearing up to launch the Poco X5 series in India and other global markets on February 6. The OEM will initially bring two devices in the series – Poco X5 5G & Poco X5 Pro 5G. Ahead of the launch, almost all the details regarding the specifications and design of these devices have already surfaced. Now, the brand has started putting the stamp of confirmation on some of these details.

In a recent tweet, Poco India posted a promo video of the X5 Pro 5G, while confirming that the device will Indeed launch with the Snapdragon 778G chipset. Additionally, the 108MP primary camera has also been confirmed along with the 120Hz Xfinity AMOLED display.

Poco X5 Pro 5G

The brand has also revealed the performance numbers of the Poco X5 Pro 5G by posting its AnTuTu score of 545,093 points. It has compared the performance of the device equipped with the Snapdragon 778G to other devices equipped with MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1080 chip. This is definitely a shot at smartphones that have recently launched with the Dimensity 1080 SoC on board like the Realme 10 Pro series and the Redmi Note 12 Pro series.

In all honesty, the real performance gap is around 7%, which isn’t that significant in real-world scenarios. Moving on, tipster Paras Guglani has revealed the pricing of the Poco X5 Pro 5G 8GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration to ₹24,999. If this turns out to be true, the Poco X5 Pro 5G might become the most value-for-money device in the mid-range, not to mention the cheapest smartphone with the Snapdragon 778G processor on board. He states that the first sale of the device will kick off on Feb 11, after the price reveal on Feb 6. To know more about the X5 Pro 5G as well as the X5 5G, you can check out our previous coverage.

Alleged Motorola Edge 40 Bags FCC Certification

A new Motorola phone with model number XT2309-3 has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US. The listing has revealed the fast charging capabilities of the device. The Edge 40 Pro, which is expected to launch soon in the global market, has the model number XT2301. Hence, it appears that it could either be the Motorola Edge 40.

The FCC listing reveals that the Motorola XT2309-3 is a 5G-ready phone that will support connectivity features like Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, and NFC. It is equipped with a battery that has the model number PB50. The listing also reveals that the device will support 68W fast charging and come equipped with a 15W wireless charging stand.

In December 2022, the 3C authority of China approved the Chinese variant of the device with model number XT2309-1. The 3C listing also revealed that the device may ship with a 68W charger. The device hasn’t launched yet in the Chinese market.

Back in October 2022, reliable leaker Evan Blass revealed that the Motorola device codenamed “Bronco” has the XT-2309 model number. The tipster claimed that it will launch as a Motorola device and that it will also have a Lenovo doppelganger.

Motroola Thinkphone

The tipster claimed that the Bronco model will offer an FHD+ OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, 8 GB / 12 GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel front camera, and a 50-megapixel (main) + 13-megapixel (ultra-wide / macro) + 2-megapixel depth triple camera unit. These specifications are already available on the Motorola ThinkPhone. Hence, it seems that the XT2301 that has surfaced on FCC could be a rebranded version of the ThinkPhone. This further suggests that it may debut as the Motorola Edge 40 in the market.

Samsung Unveils New Eco-friendly Digital Signage at ISE 2023

Samsung has announced its intention to introduce new digital signage products during ISE 2023. The ISE 2023 is Europe’s largest gathering of display exhibitions which kicked off on January 31, 2023, in Barcelona, Spain. The Samsung Exhibition Hall at ISE 2023 is the largest among exhibitors this year. The exhibition features eco-friendly smart signage and platforms, various outdoor signages, and a mounted kiosk, among others.

Samsung Digital Signage

According to the company, sustainability and environmental protection are the most important topics currently in the commercial display market. These considerations are at the heart of Samsung’s sustainability resolve and its product design. The bulk of Samsung’s products on display at ISE 2023 have thus factored sustainability into their design.

The products also flow from Samsung’s environmental management strategy released in September 2022. Samsung’s eco-friendly strategy covers materials, the production process, packaging, use, and disposal of the products. Samsung’s exhibition at ISE 2023 presents a vision for a sustainable future. Samsung says its customers who patronize its eco-friendly commercial display products will help in climate change response and resource circulation improvement.

The 2023 Smart Signage Q Series MagicINFO solution with enhanced remote management will be introduced, according to Samsung. The product has a 40% smaller screen thickness of 28.5mm than its predecessor. The smaller size implies a reduced number of containers required to carry the signage after production. The back material of the product has about 10% recycled plastic.

Samsung

The 2023 Smart Signage lineup has the Energy Star certification as a product with excellent energy-saving capabilities. MagicINFO is a cloud-based device and content management platform that provides remote management and optimization functions for the signage system. This minimizes unnecessary power consumption by supporting real-time device control, cable connection, screen brightness adjustment, and device temperature among others.

The signage offerings range from large LED to small LED sizes. The new signage system comes with several exciting functionalities which will be on display during ISE 2023.

Nothing Ear (2)’s Design to Remain Mostly the Same, May Offer Personalized ANC & Dual Connectivity

Startup brand Nothing is reported to launch new products this year. The Carl Pei-lead company will likely be introducing the popular Nothing Phone (1)’s sequel and this time the handset may also make it to the US market. Nothing is also said to be working on the next-gen Ear (2) TWS earbuds and today a new report reveals its design and a few features. Here are the details.

Nothing Ear (2) featured

OnLeaks, in collaboration with SmartPrix, has shared the design renders of the upcoming Nothing Ear (2). The images suggest Nothing will mostly be sticking to the same formula with a few changes here and there. Both the earbuds as well as the charging case feature a transparent design. The only change we could notice is in the placement of the noise-canceling microphone. It was previously on the top of the buds but now has been placed at the stem.

While the design remains the same, Nothing Ear (2) may bring some new features. The earbuds are reported to come with a new personalized ANC mode that will allow users to customize the level of noise cancellation according to their comfort. The original buds already have Light and Maximum modes. Ear (2) will also have a transparency mode to let you hear the background noise.

Further, the earbuds are said to offer dual connectivity, allowing the earbuds to connect to two devices at the same time and seamlessly switch between them. Nothing may also add support for Advanced EQ with custom settings and the Find Earbuds feature. Other details about the earbuds are still anyone’s guess. There’s no official confirmation from the brand yet, so take the above info with a pinch of salt.
