BOE shows off its new MLED tech, the future of its transparent displays

BOE has just unveiled its new breed of MLED display technology. The new display is a breakthrough in its efforts to improve the transparent display technology. So here are all the details.

For those unaware, transparent screens have been available for the consumer market in the ultra high end segments. It has even had applications in the commercial sectors and has also been useful in supporting other technologies like augmented reality. But despite all of this, they have had some limiting factors apart from their huge price tags. However, it seems that BOE is addressing many of the woes of transparent displays with its new MLED panel technology.

BOE

So far, transparent panels function as both a window and a billboard display due to discrepancies in their pixel structure or circuitry. Although, the Chinese display maker has announced the new MLED screens that offer improvements in both of these aspects. BOE has claimed that it has worked out how to space and connect its pixels in a manner that is better for displays to function as a transparent panel.

Thanks to this, the company claims that it has achieved an optimization result in transmittance that now hits up to 65 percent. This figure is on the regions of the MLED programmed to be opaque. BOE has also stated that its new MLED display technology can hit brightness of up to 1,000 nit and a contrast rtio of 1:100,000 under certain circumstances as well. In other words, this could be the new and improved future of the transparent displays.

Apple rumoured to be working on a 16-inch iPad for 2023

A 16-inch iPad is reportedly said to be in development. It is expected to debut in the fourth quarter of 2023. The news comes from The Information’s Wayne Ma who added that the 16-inch model would be the biggest iPad in the company’s tablet portfolio. Earlier this month, the Cupertino-based tech giant launched the iPad Pro 2022 and iPad (10th gen)

The report says that the 16-inch iPad would blur the lines between the iPad and MacBook. This is because Apple currently sells the 16-inch MacBook. The 16-inch iPad will probably be targeted at creative workers including graphic designers and artists who would benefit from the larger screen real estate. The 12.9-inch iPad is the largest tablet that Apple offers currently. The forthcoming offering would significantly be larger than the current 12.9-inch model.

If the report indeed turns out to be true then the difference between the 16-inch iPad and MacBook would become indistinct. This is because the iPad already packs top-notch hardware that is more powerful than most PCs. It remains to be seen how Apple positions the larger size iPad in its portfolio and whether it will be called iPad Pro or just the iPad. In addition to The Information, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also reported in the past that Apple was considering making larger iPads.

DSCC Analyst Ross Young stated earlier that Apple was also working on a 14-inch iPad Pro with a mini LED display. Based on the early rumours, it’s likely that we may expect a 14 and 16-inch iPad variants next year to match the sizes of MacBooks.

Apple iPhone, iPads face new vulnerabilities in latest iOS & iPadOS

Apple recently released the new iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 updates for its iPhones and iPads. New updates usually bring some small bugs and glitches, but this time aaround, it appears that the new updates also come with some serious security flaws as well.

According to an Economic Times report, iPhone and iPads have been facing vulnerabilities due to the new iOS and iPadOS updates. The information arrives from an advisory by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-IN). This report stated that the latest iOS and iPadOS builds feature a number of new vulnerabilities that would allow hackers with malicious intent to remotely access a user’s private data, run arbitrary code and spoof the interface address. Furthermore, these hackers could possibly even run denial of service programs remotely on the victim’s iPhone or iPad.

Apple

As per Cert-IN, several iPhones from the Cupertino based giant are vulnerable to cyberattacks if they are running on iOS 16.1 and iOS 16.0.3 builds. Similarly, the security flaw also affects iPads running on iPadOS versions prior to the iPadOS 16.1 build. Due to this issue, the Apple iPhone 8 and after models are affected, while the iPad Pro Call models, iPad Air 3rd Gen and later, iPad 5th Gen and later, and even the iPad mini 5th gen and newer models are also among the list of affected devices.

Cert-IN stated that the severity of these vulnerabilities is high and is caused because of inadequate security controls in the AppleMobileFileIntegrity component among a number of other factors as well. Now, hackers could exploit these vulnerabilities by having the user open a malicious file or application. These files or apps would include harmful firmware that could help the hacker gain access to the victim’s device.

Samsung ends Android updates for first Galaxy Fold model

Samsung was one of the first brands to launch a foldable smartphone model in the market. Just three years ago, the first ever Galaxy Fold was announced, and now, it seems that the device has reached the end of its life in terms of Android updates.

Samsung

For those unaware, the Galaxy Fold faced many delays before its eventual release and launched with Android 9 Pie out of the box back in 2019. But since then, the South Korean tech giant has offered various updates and the company’s first foldable device now runs on Android 12 OS. But it seems like this is the end of the road as Samsung will not be offering a major OS update for the Galaxy Fold. This means that the device will not be receiving the Android 13 OS based One UI 5.0 update.

In other words, it also means that this is the only foldable smartphone from the company to not receive any update past Android 12. Samsung typically offers three years of OS updates with another year of security patches. But since the Galaxy Fold has reached the end of its three year update cycle, it will no longer be eligible for major upgrades. Meanwhile, the Glaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phone models from 2021 and 2022 will still be eligible for the Android 14 update next year.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of all software updates for this device. There is still at least a year left for security updates and patches. With Android 13 just rolling out, Android 12 is by no means outdated, so existing Galaxy Fold users need not worry about their foldable phone getting outdated all of a sudden.

Realme UI 3.0 x Android 13 open beta launched for Realme GT Neo 3 & GT Neo 3 150W

Recently, Realme commenced the Android 13-based Realme UI 3.0 early access program for the GT Neo 3T smartphone. Now, the other two devices in the series, namely the Realme GT Neo 3 and the GT Neo 3 150W have moved on to the open beta phase of Realme UI 3.0, indicating that they will soon be receiving the stable Android 13 update.

Users must sign up for the program if they want to experience the open beta update. Before installing the new update, users must adhere to a few criteria. The Realme GT Neo 3 and GT Neo 3 150W users must first update their smartphones to the necessary versions, RMX3561 11.A.15, RMX3561 11.A.16; RMX3563 11.A.15, RMX3563 11.A.16.

Once you are on the required version, you can proceed with the open beta update installation by navigating to Settings>Software Update>Tap the drop-down on the top right corner>Tap on Trial Version>Fill out the form and hit Apply Now.

If and when your application is accepted, a notification for the new beta update will be sent to you. Being a beta program, it is important to keep in mind that the update may contain bugs or that some apps may not function as intended. We, therefore, suggest our readers refrain from updating their primary phones with the beta version.

It is also advised to back up the data on your device before the update as updating to the Android 13 beta version and then rolling back to Android 12 will erase all the data on the smartphone.

Xiaomi Book Air 13 details leak: RAM, storage, processor & more

Xiaomi‘s sub-brand Redmi is gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 12 series on October October 27. Along with the new smartphones, the company will also launch a new laptop called the Xiaomi Book Air 13. The laptop is teased to be the thinnest and lightest laptop by the brand yet.

Ahead of the launch, multiple sources have leaked the specifications of the upcoming laptop. So, let’s take a look at the details.

A previous JD listing reveals that the laptop will feature a 13.3-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels, 60Hz refresh rate, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the laptop will be powered by 12th Gen Intel Core U series processors. These will be the Core i5-1230U or the Core i7-1250U processors. Both of these are quite similar processors with 10 cores (2 performance + 8 efficiency cores), and 12 threads. The only difference between the two is that the i7 model can boost up to 4.7GHz while the i5 model is capable of a max boost of 4.4GHz.

The chipsets will be paired with 16GB of LPDDR5-5200 RAM and 512 GB SSD storage. The laptop will weigh 1.2 kg and should be 12 mm thick. Despite the thin and light, Xiaomi claims to have installed a 58.3 Wh battery with 65 W support in the laptop. Lastly, the laptop will come with baked-in Bluetooth 5.2, a couple of Thunderbolt ports, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.
