As an Android user, your overall software support user experience is not only determined by the amount of major Android OS updates but also determined by the frequency of security updates.

Stepping into early June, one of the world’s Top 3 leading smartphone brands, Xiaomi has pushed out the June 2022 Android Security Update to its two flagship devices, and surprisingly both devices were released not last year, but almost 2 years ago.

The Xiaomi devices that are receiving the June 2022 security update are the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 5G and the Redmi K30S Ultra 5G. However, do be noted the update is only coming to the model variants in the Chinese market, not the global variant.

However, it is expected that the June 2022 security update will be arriving soon to global Xiaomi devices as well in the next coming weeks, so stay tuned to that!

As to update to the latest version of MIUI 13 with the latest security update, MIUI users can head to About Phone > MIUI Version > Check for Updates, to get themselves on the latest stable version of MIUI 13 with the latest security patch.

For those curious, the Redmi K30S Ultra is a rebranded Xiaomi Mi 10T device for the Chinese market that was launched back earlier in 2020 in Europe. The Xiaomi Mi 10T was launched with a flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC and a flagship-grade IPS LCD panel with a blazingly fast 144Hz refresh rate.

Redmi Note 11T Pro series
Redmi Note 11T Pro series

In 2022, Xiaomi has seemed to launch a spiritual successor to the Mi 10T and it comes with a more affordable price as well. The device aforementioned is the Redmi Note 11T Pro. The Redmi Note 11T Pro features a 6.6-inch IPS LCD display and supports a 144Hz refresh rate. The IPS LCD Display is also the first-ever LCD to be rated A+ on DisplayMate’s rankings and it competes even with the best AMOLEDs in the smartphone industry.

The processor under the Redmi Note 11T Pro is also higher-performing, and more power-efficient than the Mi 10T as well. The Redmi Note 11T Pro sports MediaTek’s critically praised MediaTek Dimensity 8100 flagship SoC along with a 5000mAh battery and 67W fast charging.

You can now grab the Redmi Note 11T Pro today on Giztop for as low as US$ 339

GoGo A1 electric conversion kit for the Hero Splendor bike now on sale in India

Indian firm GoGo A1 in April received the approval of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for a conversion kit that transforms the Hero Splendor bike into an electric bike. The GoGo A1 electric conversion kit has now gone on sale in India via the company’s website. The kit starts at Rs. 37,700 (~$485) while the battery pack is priced at Rs. 65,606 (~$845) with the charging adapter.GoGo A1

India is rapidly making progress in its plans to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the country. A few initiatives have seen the development of electric conversion kits that will transform ICE vehicles into electric-powered models. The outlook for the conversion kits is expected to grow and Hero Splendor is keying into the process. The Hero Splendor Electric GoGo A1 conversion kit has now added the ARAI certification to its previous regulatory endorsements.

The kit contains a 2 kW electric motor, mounted on the rear wheel hub fed by a 2.8 kWh battery pack, with a regenerative braking system. The setup also includes a DC-DC converter, new accelerator wiring, a key switch with controller box, and a new swingarm.

The conversion will be carried out at GoGo A1’s installation workshops in 36 RTO locations in India. Customers will be able to get insurance for the converted motorbike after some documentation at the local RTO. A converted bike is issued a new green numberplate although the registration number will remain unchanged.Hero Splendor Electric GoGo A1 Conversion Kit

There is no doubt that this conversion kit will come in very useful in India considering the popularity of the Hero Splendor in India. However, the price of the battery pack may be a serious drawback considering that there are e-scooters available for the final price you’ll have to cough out for the entire conversion. The company says the battery can deliver a range of 151km on a full charge and you get to retain the solid frame and much of the design of the Splendor, making it a potentially worthwhile project.

Electric bikes have been on the wrong end of the news in India in recent weeks. That may have an impact on the success of this product but we can’t be so sure about that.

The company formally filed its Form 25 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 2nd to delist its American Depositary Shares.

Earlier on May 23rd 2022, DiDi Global held its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to decide whether the company should delist from the NYSE amid growing concerns from both external and internal parties. The conclusion was that 96.26% of shareholders who were present and voting, voted in favour of delisting DiDi‘s American Depositary Shares from the NYSE, the company said.

Of the 1.2 billion shares outstanding as of April 28 this year, members holding roughly 811.44 million shares cast their votes in the EGM.

Reuters reported that DiDi has struggled to bring its business back to normal after angering Chinese regulators by pushing ahead with its $4.4 billion New York listing in June last year despite being asked to put it on hold.

Days after DiDi went public on the NYSE, China’s powerful internet watchdog Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) launched a cybersecurity probe into the company’s data practices and ordered app stores to remove 25 mobile apps operated by DiDi.

“It’s the only option for shareholders. They were going to be in purgatory if they (DiDi) persisted in their disobedience to the Chinese government,” reported Reuters, quoting Thomas Hayes, chairman of Green Hill Capital.

Oppo-K10-5G-1

Design

I personally prefer the design of the OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus for several reasons. First of all, its camera module is more elegant, less invasive, and more original in terms of design. Further, the phone has a very high screen to body ratio and it is more compact than Vivo X80. Last but not least, it is one of the thinnest phones of 2022 with a thickness of just 7.3 mm, and it is even very lightweight. However, you should not underestimate the Vivo X80: it comes in a special color option made with a leather back that looks very gorgeous. Currently, there are not many flagships with a leather back and, usually, they are in the top-tier segment. That is not the case with the Vivo X80 offering a leather back at a more affordable price.

Display

The display of the OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus is a better panel if compared to the Vivo X80. It is able to show up to one billion colors and this is the element making it better. For the rest, these displays are very similar to each other. They are panels with a diagonal of around 6.7 inches, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080p, the HDR certification, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. They also come with optical in-display fingerprint readers. Unfortunately, even though these are high-end phones, they do not feature stereo speakers and they do not even come with a 3.5 mm audio jack. The displays of these phones are not the best out there, but they provide great image quality and a high level of smoothness.

Specs & Software

Are you looking for the most advanced hardware? If so, you should opt for the Vivo X80. It is powered by the Dimensity 9000 chipset by MediaTek: currently, the Dimensity 9000 is the most powerful chipset by MediaTek. It is built with a 4 nm production process, it runs at a max frequency of 3.05 GHz and it is paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The Vivo X80 runs Android 12 customized by Funtouch OS 12 in the global market and Origin OS Ocean in China. The OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus has a processor which comes right after the Dimensity 9000 in terms of CPU and GPU performance: the Dimensity 8100 Max, paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The phone runs Android 12 customized by ColorOS 12.1.

Camera

When it comes to the cameras, it is a hard fight between these two phones. The OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus is able to capture better shots with the main 50 MP camera thanks to the aid of the proprietary NPU MariSilicon X that improves night photography and video recording at night. On the other hand, the Vivo X80 is equipped with better secondary sensors: it has a 12 MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom and a 12 MP ultrawide camera. The OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus replaces the telephoto lens with a useless 2 MP macro camera and its ultrawide sensor is an inferior 8 MP shooter.

Battery

Both these handsets are equipped with a 4500 mAh battery capacity and they feature 80W fast charging, as well as reverse charging. But the Vivo X80 should provide a longer battery life in several scenarios because the Dimensity 9000 is a more efficient mobile platform. However, the ColorOS user interface is notoriously better at software optimization and it could achieve lower energy consumption on the Reno8 Pro Plus.

Price

You need at least €566/$607 to purchase the Vivo X80 in the Chinese market, while the starting price of the OPPO Reno8 Pro Plus roughly translates into €520/$557. So which phone is the best? The Vivo X80 looks more interesting because it comes with a better processor and superior cameras, but the Reno8 Pro+ has a better design (thinner and more elegant) and display (with one billion colors). Which one would you pick?

Poco C40 Confirmed to Launch Globally on June 16th

So far in 2022, POCO has launched several devices into the smartphone market which include the POCO F4 GT, POCO X4 Pro 5G and the POCO M4 5G. Although 3 devices provide a very solid spec sheet for the price, their launch prices are not quite affordable for those searching in the entry-level market.

Thus, after 6 months into 2022, we finally have the long-awaited launch date of POCO’s next entry-level device – the POCO C40

On the official POCO Global Twitter account, POCO has made an announcement that the POCO C40 will be officially launching globally on June 16th via an online launch event held by the company.

In the announcement, POCO reveals that the POCO C40 will feature an exclusive design that was done by POCO themselves. And one of the colour options for the POCO C40 will be POCO’s signature POCO Yellow colourway.

However, upon closer inspection, it seems that the design shown in the teaser posted much resembles that of the Redmi 10C launched globally earlier this year and the standard Redmi 10 that was launched in India as well. Hopefully, POCO’s exclusive new design is not just a new colour option for the device.

As for the other specs of the POCO C40, POCO has also been revealing teasers for the specs of the smartphone on its official social media accounts. The company teased that the POCO C40 will be featuring a 6,000 mAh battery, the biggest battery ever on a POCO smartphone, and it will also sport a 6.71-inch teardrop notch display, the largest display yet on a POCO smartphone.

Galaxy Watch 5 & Watch 5 Pro monikers confirmed on updated Samsung health app

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro will be the names of the next Samsung smart wearables. The latest update of the Samsung health app has provided some clarity on the naming pattern of the Galaxy Watch 5 series. The update which could point to an imminent launch of the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro models, also indicates the absence of the classic model in the Watch 5 lineup.

The Galaxy Watch 4 beta update for the Samsung Health app has added support for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro. The Galaxy Watch 4 beta update does not provide any significant changes to its features. There was no mention of the Galaxy Watch 5 Classic in the health update. It is most probable that the classic model will not be part of the new Watch 5 series. There’s a precedent because Samsung acted similarly before the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 series.

Rumors around the Galaxy Watch 5 have been rife before now. Some tipsters have commented that the Watch 5 Pro will not have a rotating bezel. Samsung is also rumored to have used durable materials like sapphire glass and titanium to offer improved protection. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is certainly the higher of the two models and it has a premium look.

There are no specifics yet on the rollout of the Galaxy Watch 5 series. In the case of the Galaxy Watch 4, the health app update preceded the launch by a month.

Huawei Mate 40 Series Discontinued in China, Here’s What Next for Huawei

Recently, mainstream Chinese technology news site, ITHome, reported that on Huawei’s official online sales channels in China, the Huawei Mate 40 and Huawei Mate 40 Pro had not been restocked and has since been delisted on the company’s online stores as of June 3rd (last Friday). As unfortunate as it sounds, it seems that the Huawei Mate 40 series has been officially discontinued by Huawei as the company’s official online platforms no longer sell the devices in the country.

Currently, when searching through the Huawei smartphone products category, the official store shows that the only Huawei Mate series smartphones left for sale are the Huawei Mate Xs 2 and Huawei Mate X2 foldable flagships, and the older Huawei Mate 30 5G and Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G devices released back in 2019.

After the US trade sanctions against Huawei, the company has faced a lot of difficulties in obtaining silicon chips for its smartphones. With fewer chips for production, means fewer Huawei smartphones to sell as well. So what’s next for Huawei if they want to continue to stay relevant in the smartphone market?

Well for one, the company has already undergone a major shift in its smartphone pricing strategy. Previously pre-2019, the smartphone brand would churn out a lot of devices in the entry-level, mid-range, and flagship markets to sell globally to capture more market share in the smartphone industry. But since 2020, Huawei has gradually exited the entry-level and mid-range market, focusing only on its flagships.

Huawei P50 Pocket
Huawei P50 Pocket

Most notably, Huawei has taken a lot of risk by putting its foldable flagships like the Huawei Mate X2, Huawei Mate Xs 2 and the Huawei P50 Pocket. The foldables market for Huawei has been generating more revenue for the company compared to the conventional smartphone market. Although the cost of manufacturing foldables is higher, Huawei can mark up the selling price of its foldables significantly higher than conventional smartphones as well.

In addition, the foldable market also has less competition than for say the conventional flagship market. For example, the Huawei P50 Pro has to compete with the iPhone 13 Pro, Realme GT 2 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, Vivo X80 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Pro, etc. Meanwhile, the Huawei P50 Pocket only competes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Motorola Razr. In turn, the company can sell more and earn more sales revenue per foldable sold than it would have otherwise sold a conventional Android flagship despite lower foldables sales volumes.

For the next 5 years, Huawei is still expected to stay in the smartphone market, but the company is expected to switch from a mainstream brand to a niche luxury smartphone brand selling innovative foldable smartphones. The brand is expected to release the Huawei P60 Pocket and Huawei Mate X3 this year as well and if you are interested in the latest technology from China, stay tuned to our coverage here at Gizmochina!
