Google is reportedly working on in-built cough and snore detection for Android

Google may soon be able to detect if users snore or cough in their sleep. The search giant is reportedly working on those two built-in features for Pixel and Android. Publication 9to5Google spotted lines of code in the installation file of the Google Health Studies app. It revealed that the company is conducting a study called ‘Sleep Audio Collection’ that is only available to Google employees.

Google cough and snore detection

“You must be a Full Time Googler with an Android phone to participate in this study. Environmental conditions required for this study are to have no more than one adult sleeper in the same room who does not work for a competitor company.” explained Google. With the experiment, Google is working to collect the necessary data to bring an advanced suite of sensing capabilities and algorithms that could be available on Android.

The cough and snore sensing capabilities will reportedly work as sleep tracking feature for users and will monitor the said metrics during sleep. Google said that the function will work in a privacy-preserving, on-device manner which means that the collected data will be safely processed and stored on the phone locally. Snore and Noise detection is already available on Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 as well as the second-generation Nest Hub.

At the moment, it remains unclear whether the cough and snore detection will be a Pixel-exclusive feature or if it will be available on wide Android devices. The feature is said to have many advantages, especially for people who battle sleep apnea

Samsung next gen flagship Exynos SoC is codenamed Quadra, based on 3nm process

Recent rumors have hinted at Samsung working on its next generation of top end Exynos series mobile processor. Now, a new report has revealed the internal codename of its upcoming flagship chipset as well as its model number.

According to known tipster Roland Quandt, the South Korean tech giant’s new flagship Exynos SoC has been codenamed “Quadra.” This chipset will apparently be the successor to the Exynos 2200, which was codenamed Pamir, that shipped with the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. In other words, Quadra might be officially called the Exynos 2300, although, its exact specifications and improvements over its predecessor is currently unknown.

The tipster further tweeted that the new chipset will be based on the 3nm GAA fabrication process and will feature latest ARM CPU cores. It will reportedly even be based on the updated Xclipse GPU that is based on AMD’s latest Radeon GPU. The mass production of this chipset might begin later this year, which is basically in line with the company’s next flagship Exynos chip launch. Interestingly, there have also been rumors circulating regarding Samsung possibly not using Exynos chips for its flagship Galaxy S series of flagship smartphones for the next two years.

Samsung
Exynos 2200

The reason for this shift is apparently due to throttling issues and lackluster performance compared to its rival, Qualcomm and its Snapdragon chips. It is rumored that the brand has setup a team of around 1,000 employees that are tasked with building a new custom chip from the ground up, which may be used on the Galaxy S25 in 2025. So stay tuned for more updates.

Apex Legends Mobile brought in $4.8 million in user spending in just the first week

Respawn Entertainment had just launched the highly anticipated Apex Legends Mobile a couple of days ago. And it seems like that game is already a success since it brought in 4.8 million US Dollars in user spending within this short period of time.

Apex Legends Mobile

For those unaware, the mobile port of Apex Legends is the Android/iOS version of the popular PC title. It is a battle royale style game with unique characters that have different abilities. This game was first released back on 17th May 2022, while its Beta had been live for sometime now in limited regions. But just a week after its launch, the mobile game generated 4.8 million US Dollars in just a week with most of the revenue coming from in game purchases for cosmetic items like weapons, legends skins, Battle Pass, and more.

Notably, we had also previously reported on Apex Legends Mobile becoming the most downloaded game in more than 60 countries as well. The latest news arrives from known analytics based firm Sensor Tower who shared the estimate of the player spending in the game. It also offered the breakdown of player expenditure based on the region, with the US ranking first as users spent 2.1 million US Dollars in the game, accounting for 44 percent of total revenue.

This marks an impressive milestone by Respawn Entertainment, since its rival PUGB Mobile only brought in around 600,000 US Dollars in the first week of its release back in 2018. Although, both of these figures are dwarfed by COD: Mobile, which brought in a whopping 14.8 million US Dollars in its first week.

Report: Philippines Smartphone Shipments Dropped 5% YoY in Q1 2022, Samsung retained the lead

Philippines Smartphone Shipments are down by 5 percent year-on-year (YoY) in the Q1 of FY22 amid Shortages of critical components and COVID-19 restrictions in China. However, despite the dip in the shipments, Samsung has continued to be the market leader, followed by Realme and Oppo.

A report from Counterpoint research says that the Philippines’ smartphone shipments have decreased 5% YoY and 13% QoQ in Q1 2022. Following seasonal norms, the quarter began slowly. On the other hand, Vivo and Xiaomi captured the fourth and fifth spots in the country’s smartphone market with 14.4 percent and 9 percent market share, respectively in Q1 2022.

Chinese players including Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and realme launched various promotion campaigns on the online channel, especially on Shopee and Lazada, which also contributed to their shipments” said Akash Jatwala, Research Analyst with Counterpoint. “The e-commerce sector is growing fast in the region. Oppo is apparently gearing up to launch two new smartphones in India. The company is planning on bringing two new models within the Oppo A57 series to the region, with the A57 already being launched in certain other nations.

For those unaware, the Chinese smartphone maker had just launched the A57 5G in Thailand earlier today (27th May 2022). Although, this model’s 5G variant has been available in the brand’s home market of China since April 2022. But now, new information shared by tipster Paras Guglani has revealed that the 4G model will also be arriving in the Indian market. However, the A57 will not launch alone, as the brand is reportedly planning on releasing an A57s model in India as well.

While the A57 has been launched before, the A57s is a new entry from Oppo. The tipster also shared images of both smartphone models, which offered us a look at both A57 series version. Looking at the images, we can see that the A57 and A57s will have a similar design, with both variants having a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera on the front and a flat rear panel. Xiaomi patents clamshell folding Flip Phone, similar to Galaxy Z Flip 3

Xiaomi is apparently working on a new foldable smartphone that appears to resemble the Galaxy Z Flip 3 from Samsung. Meaning, it has a clamshell folding design, which basically makes it a modern day flip phone.

Xiaomi

The Chinese tech giant had recently filed a patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) that offers us a look at its possible design. Looking at the images in the patent, we can see the foldable smartphone in both its folded state and unfolded state. The former shows us that it can be quite compact when not in use. Although, an interesting observation is the camera module. Xiaomi’s Flip Phone features a horizontal camera module that is quite similar to the Google Pixel 6 in terms of design.

This module also houses three cutouts for the image sensors, but one of these could be for the LED flash. The design sketches also reveal that the smartphone has a speaker grille on the bottom along with the SIM card tray and USB Type C charging port. On the right side, it houses the power button and volume rockers as well. There appears to be no cutout on the display itself, so it is unclear what mechanism the smartphone will use for selfie shots.

Xiaomi

So, Xiaomi might use its Camera Under Panel (CUP) technology for the front facing camera, which was found on the MIX Fold model. As of right now, this is all the information we have regarding this model. It is also unclear if the company is actually working on such a model or is simply covering all bases. So stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

Last week, it was reported that the ongoing Covid-19 lockdowns in China are expected to have a significant impact on Apple revenue for the April-June quarter, with the company predicting an $8 billion loss in sales, mainly due to the Shanghai lockout.

For the unversed, Apple is prepping to launch four new iPhone models this year, tentatively named the iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 14 Max, and 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and Pro models will feature 6.1-inch screens, while the Max and Pro Max models will arrive with 6.7 in-inch screens.

As per the report, all four models are currently in the engineering verification test (EVT) stage. In this stage, suppliers finalize all parts and processes before starting mass production of the new iPhones and also calculate the manufacturing costs. However, due to the lockdowns in Shanghai, one of the models is reported to be about three weeks behind schedule. Analyst Jeff Pu claims that the delayed model is the long-rumored iPhone 14 Max.

This is not the first time Apple is facing such a dilemma. The same happened during the production of the iPhone 12 in 2020. Due to the lockdown and Covid-19, the tech giant had to launch the iPhone 12 in October, one month later than the expected launch date.

As per the report, the upcoming first foldable smartphone from Google has been delayed till spring next year. However, an exact timeline for the launch of the device has not been known yet but we expect more information to emerge in the coming months.

Ross Young claims that the delay in the launch of the smartphone is not because of the display issues but he speculates that the company could be waiting for the next-generation Tensor chipset or some software improvements.

Just a day ago, there was a report claiming that the Google Pixel Fold smartphone won’t be making its debut this year. This is the second time the technology giant has postponed the launch of its first foldable device.

Most of the leading smartphone manufacturers have launched their own foldable smartphones in the market, and Samsung continues to dominate the market. The South Korean giant already has a few generations of foldable phones in the market and is now gearing up to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the coming months.
