Xiaomi discontinues the Mi 10S with Snapdragon 870 SoC and 90Hz curved display

Last year, Xiaomi surprised everyone with the launch of Mi 10S. The China-exclusive smartphone offers cherry-picked premium specs for a lower price tag. It was a cheaper alternative to the Mi 11 at the time of its release. A year after its debut, the phone has been now discontinued.

Xiaomi Mi 10S
Xiaomi Mi 10S

Earlier today, in a reply to a netizen on a Weibo post, Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, confirmed that the Mi 10S is sold out. ITHome also reports that the handset is listed ‘out of stock’ on Mi.com and JD (Jingdong).

This clearly suggests that the company has discontinued the Mi 10S in its home country, the only market where it was released. However, the device could be available in the offline market until stocks run out.

The Xiaomi Mi 10S is one of a kind smartphone. Unfortunately, the firm did not bring it to international markets.

The handset features a 6.67-inch FHD+ 90Hz curved AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.0 storage, liquid cooling technology, 108MP (OIS, wide) + 13MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) quad-camera setup, 20MP selfie camera, dual stereo speakers tuned by Harman Kardon, 4,780mAh battery, 33W fast wired charging, 30W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

The phone debuted with MIUI 12 based on Android 11 for a starting price of ¥3,299 for the base 8GB + 128GB memory configuration. The device was updated to MIUI 12.5, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition, and it currently runs MIUI 13 based on Android 12.

Google “At a Glance” widget gets a subtle yet important change with Pixel 6 March update

Google has added a long-demanded new feature to the At a Glance widget with the March update for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Tapping on the day and month now takes you to the Google Calendar page for the same date, allowing you to set reminders and type in other events directly (via PhoneArena). Similarly, tapping on the current temperature shown on the widget takes you to the weather app, as it should. This is a welcome change over the previous implementation that fired up the weather app no matter what part of the widget was tapped.

google at a glance widget

But there are some more changes being demanded too. For example, several Pixel owners on Reddit said they want Google to return the feature from Android 11 where tapping on the time at the top of the widget opened the clock app.

We may perhaps see that come back considering Google isn’t done with the At a Glance widget just yet. A number of features are in the pipeline currently such as an alert for when a user has left the flashlight on and a notification for when someone’s at your front door.

Other features rumored to be making their way to the widget before the end of the year include a QR code representing your boarding pass that shows up automatically prior to the boarding of a flight.

ZTE probation ends as US Judge rules in favor of the Chinese telecom brand

A Judge in the United States has ruled in favor of ZTE earlier this week. The judgement arrives as the end to the company’s five year long probation following a guilty plea back in 2017 for shipping US technology to Iran and North Korea illegally.

ZTE logo

As per an Aljazeera report, the trading for the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker’s shares were suspended before markets opened in Shenzhen and Hong Kong after the news of the ruling was announced by the US District Judge Ed Kinkeade in Texas. Notably, the decision also arrives on the final day of the company’s probation, over accusation involving the company and its alleged conspiracy to bring Chinese nations to the US to conduct research at the firm through visa fraud.

Furthermore, as per a former ZTE research director and a Georgia Institute of Technology professor allegedly conspired to bring Chinese nations into the US to conduct research at ZTE between 2014 and 2018 while on the J-1 visas, which were sponsored by the university. Although the brand has not been charged in the visa case, the judge held a hearing in Dallas last week over allegations of fraud and violation of its original probation.

ZTE Logo

In the latest ruling, Kinkeade stated that ZTE was legally responsible for the actions of its former director, but decided to not take any further actions against the firm. ZTE has already reached the maximum term of probation and has argued that it had already been fined the maximum amount as well, which ammounted to 892 million US Dollars. The judge wrote that there was an “open question about legal tools left for the court.”

Global premium smartphone market growing faster than overall phone market, research shows

The premium smartphone market has been quite profitable for the players in the game, especially in 2021. Latest Counterpoint Research figures show that the segment grew 24% YoY last year to reach a new summit, even outpacing the 7% growth of the overall smartphone market. Premium smartphones contributed to 27% of the global smartphone sales, which again is a new record.

Global Premium ($400) Smartphone Market Sales Contribution
Global Premium ($400) Smartphone Market Sales Contribution

All this was driven by a number of factors such as upgrades to the affordable-premium segment in emerging economies and replacement demand for 5G devices in advanced economies. Companies like Apple, OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi continued to fill up the hole left by Huawei, especially in China and Western Europe.

OEM-wise, Apple continued to lead the market, touching the 60% market share mark for the first time since 2017 driven by iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 sales — the company’s first 5G-supporting series. Apple even reached its highest ever market share in China in Q4 2021.

Samsung saw a 6% growth in sales in the premium segment, but it lost share. The Galaxy S21 series performed better than the S20 series but the gains were somewhat offset by the lack of a new Note series, FE series refresh, and component shortages.

But it was OPPO and vivo that perhaps saw the biggest gains in 2021, growing 116% and 103%, respectively, to become a part of the five in the premium segment in multiple countries. OPPO has been growing steadily in Europe while vivo oversaw some great figures reeled in by the X60 and X50 series in China and Southeast Asia.

Xiaomi meanwhile featured in the top five list for the premium segment in all regions it sells, with gains driven by the Mi 11 series.

Further, it is said that once the company starts taking pre-orders for the affordable Foxtron Model C SUV in the fourth quarter of this year, the product will go into mass production sometime in the first half of next year.

The car measures 4.64 meters in length and has a 112.6-inch-long wheelbase. The model will be available as a seven-seater with a 2+3+2 seating layout optionally, which will make it suitable for large families.

The company says that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h or 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. This acceleration time applies to its performance variant with 400 horsepower, 700 Nm (516 lb.-ft.) of torque, and AWD drivetrain layout.

Apple iPhone 15 to reportedly have a true punch-hole display with hidden Face ID sensors

Apple is gearing up to launch the next-generation iPhone 14 series smartphone later this year in the market. Ahead of the launch, some key details about the upcoming iPhone models have leaked online.

Now, a new report coming from South Korea-based The Elec reveals details about the design of the Apple iPhone 15 which will get launched next year.

iPhone 14 Pro

It is being claimed that the next year’s iPhone 15 will have an OLED display and the Face ID sensors won’t be visible as they will be tucked inside the screen. This means that it will be a true punch-hole display smartphone from Apple.

The report adds that the Cupertino-based technology giant will rely on Samsung’s under-panel camera (UPC) technology that made an appearance with the internal screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3.

However, there are reports that the South Korean company is developing a new under-display camera technology along with OTI Lumionics which should debut with the Galaxy Z Fold5 smartphone as the Galaxy Z Fold4 will use the current technology.

The Apple iPhone 15 will only have the front-facing camera visible which will result in the smartphone looking at what the majority of the Android smartphones have been design-wise from the past few years. Also, it is being speculated that this major design change could be only for the iPhone 15 Pro models and not the regular ones.

The upcoming Apple iPhone 14 series is expected to have four models — iPhone 14, 14 Max, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. The Pro models are expected to come with a dual pill-shaped cutout for the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors but the non-Pro models will continue to have a notch on top of the screen.

Further, there are reports which claim that only the iPhone 14 Pro models will come with an Apple A16 Bionic processor while the regular models will continue using the A15 processor while there will also be differences in terms of the memory technology.
