Pininfarina’s Xingtu is a smart Electric truck with an aerodynamic design & Voice Assistant

Italian car design firm Pininfarina has unveiled its latest heavy-duty all-electric autonomous truck with a beautiful and expansive design. The design of the Xingtu reflects a vigorous reliance on cutting-edge technology to produce a truck that will provide comfort to both the environment and its driver. The Pininfarina Xingtu electric truck is specifically designed for DeepWay, a smart truck company and it is a semi-autonomous vehicle. It is targeting long-haul logistic operations and cargo deliveries in a sustainable and safe manner.

The Pininfarina Xingtu electric truck is primed to improve cargo transportation efficiency in a sustainable manner to the environment while also providing drivers the needed comforts akin to what they might expect at home. DeepWay was formed in 2020 and it has the backing of Chinese internet powerhouse Baidu. Pininfarina was commissioned by DeepWay to design the Xingtu concept semi-autonomous truck, which comes with an extensive lineup of features and gadgets. These include 11 onboard cameras, a LIDAR sensor, radars, infra-red detectors, and other components that provide excellent navigation for the truck. The Xingtu is capable of detecting obstacles 1 km away and providing a proper response for such obstacles.

The design of the complex semi-autonomous all-electric truck was accomplished by Pininfarina Shanghai. The company’s Head of Design, Matteo Piguzzi stated that heavy-duty trucks are rapidly evolving to adapt to a fast-changing environment with technology-driven innovations for seamless operations and enhanced safety. The efficiency and aerodynamics technology deployed in the Xingtu reflects in its aesthetically appealing exterior which is streamlined for autonomous driving.

The 450kWh battery of the Xingtu gives it a range of 300km, but this can be massively scaled because the battery pack is easily swappable. The battery can also be fully charged in one hour. The interior of the Xingtu is another area of innovation and technology. The large display screen is an infotainment hub, and the experience is further accentuated with expansive and ultra-comfortable seats, and a voice assistant to enable prompt actions. There are no details as of now however on the possible release date for the Xingtu. Pininfarina could provide such details subsequently.

Google Pay pushing for crypto payments functionality, hires former PayPay exec

Google Pay is a digital payment service that has gained popularity in markets like India. And now the search giant is planning to make it even more compelling by adding features like crypto payments.

In a new Bloomberg report, Google’s president of commerce Bill Ready stated that Google has hired former PayPal executive Arnold Goldberg as part of a company-wide push into financial services, including crypto. Arnold Goldberg has been recruited to become the vice president and general manager for the payments and emerging market efforts — an initiative Google calls Next Billion Users, or NBU.

So far, Google has not confirmed its plans to include support for crypto payments in its digital wallet app. However, Ready stated that “Crypto is something we pay a lot of attention to. As user demand and merchant demand evolves, we’ll evolve with it.”

This indicates that we may see Google include this feature in their wallet if the crypto market evolves and demand for the feature rises.

Ready also revealed that Google will be adding more features to Google Pay soon to make it a more “comprehensive digital wallet”. Some of these upcoming features include digital ticket support, airline passes, and vaccine passports.

These new efforts come after Google shelved its plans to add bank accounts to its payment app. The project included a revamp of the app which would enable users to apply for “Plex” checking and savings accounts from 11 banks but the search giant scrapped it in October 2021.

Apple will no longer ship EarPods with iPhones in France

Apple stopped packing EarPods inside iPhone boxes long ago but France continued to get them for a long time. What made Apple do this is the legal requirement related to radio-frequency energy which makes headphones a necessary item and needs to be included in the box with smartphones. However, this law has now been changed.

Gallery - 1

According to a new report by MacRumors, starting January 24, 2022, Apple will no longer provide EarPods in the box when you purchase a new iPhone. The law which previously compelled Apple to include a “handsfree kit,”  with their smartphones has now been changed in favor of reducing the environmental footprint of digital devices.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Display

Apple had made the environment-friendly move back in 2020 when they stopped including EarPods and the charging brick with the iPhone 12, significantly reducing the size of its box.

This new law is not only applicable to apple but all the smartphone manufacturers in France as it no longer forces them to include headphones in the box. Instead, they just need to ensure that compatible headphones are available separately as an optional accessory.

The French carrier Frac has posted a notice in their store stating: “DEAR CUSTOMERS, We would like to inform you that our manufacturers are no longer required to supply headphones/hands-free kits with their smartphones in France. This new law, adopted in late 2021, aims to reduce the environmental footprint in France.

The Xiaomi brand is concerned, for products purchased from the week of January 17, 2022. The same will be true for the Apple brand as of from the week of January 24, 2022
THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING”

For now, Apple’s French website continues to show EarPods an included item in the box alongside a USB-C to Lightning cable which is likely to change soon.

Apple’s environment-friendly initiative, although controversial, is becoming standard practice in the premium smartphone segment. However, some regions have pushed back against it with Brazil fining the Cupertino tech giant $1.9 million in March 2021 for not including chargers in the iPhone 12. After which the company was forced to offer chargers to anyone requesting it.

Moto Edge X30 will Receive a Huge Camera Performance Boost in Its Next Update

Back in December 2021, Lenovo was the first phone manufacturer to ship Qualcomm’s latest and greatest, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset on its flagship Moto Edge X30. However, camera performance for the device was quite average compared to the competition (our Edge X30 review here), but Lenovo is looking to improve the phone’s camera performance in its next update.

The news came from Lenovo’s Senior Product Manager in China, Chen Jin. Chen, under his Weibo username “Amazing Bro”, confirmed that the Moto Edge X30 will be receiving a major software update by Lenovo before the Lunar New Year(February 1, 2022), hinting that the update will be available to users before January ends.

lenovo-senior-new-moto-edge-x30
Lenovo Senior Product Manager commenting on the upcoming new entry to the Moto Edge X30 family

As for the features that the upcoming major software update will bring, Chen mentions that the Moto Edge X30 will sport improved camera software than the current camera software on the Moto Edge X30 and the video recording on the new camera software is described as jaw-dropping. Chen also shared that the new update will include support for video recordings in higher fps, allowing for smoother movements in videos.

As for security improvements, Chen emphasizes that the Moto Edge X30 will now have a new “Privacy Space” mode after the major update. Chen did not mention the highlights of this new mode, but the mode may work similar to Xiaomi’s Second Space, where the phone allows you to use 2 totally different spaces on your phone — one for work and one for leisure purposes with games, social media, and video-sharing platforms.

In the post, Chen also brings his regret that the software team was not able to develop a solution for a more stock Android-like notification center and notification shade, because Lenovo wanted to release the major update before the Lunar New Year. The update will roll out to Moto Edge X30 devices in China by the end of January 2022.

As for the hardware on the Moto Edge X30, it features a 6.7″ OLED HDR10+ display and comes with 8GB / 12 GB RAM and 128GB / 256GB internal storage. The smartphone comes with a triple rear camera setup flaunting a 50MP, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS main camera, and 50MP + 2MP secondary ones. For your selfies, you have a 60MP HDR wide-angle camera in the front.

Moto Edge X30-3
Standard Moto Edge X30

Powered by the world’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Octa-Core processor, the smartphone runs on Android 12 based MYUI 3.0. It is fueled by a large 5000mAh Li-Po battery and supports 68W fast charging. This means you can charge your phone from 0 to 100% in just 35 mins. Motorola Edge X30 comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and is available in Black and White colour variants.

If you are interested in the standard Moto Edge X30, the phone is now available for order at Giztop for $599.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro rumored to feature 5x periscopic zoom lens

The iPhone 14 series is the anticipated Apple flagship smartphone lineup of this year. However, a new report has revealed some interesting news regarding the iPhone 15 Pro, which is set to launch next year.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro series featured
iPhone 13 Pro series

According to a 9To5Mac report, known analyst Jeff Pu stated that the Cupertino based giant is apparently in talks with Lante Optics. Lante is expected to be the main supplier of periscope lenses that will be used in the 2023 iPhone lineup. The analyst claims that Apple has already started receiving component samples and has yet to approve the new parts, but the final approval should arrive sometime by May 2022.

In other words, the approval for the components means that the high end Pro models of 2023 iPhone will feature optical zoom lens. Notably, this deal will likely have Lante Optics supply the iPhone maker with more than 100 million parts for its products. Interestingly, this information is also in line with our previous reports that also hinted at the iPhone 15 Pro sporting a zoom lens. Although, the latest rumors hints at a 5x optical zoom which is half of the last report that suggested a 10x optical zoom.

Apple

The past rumor was also from a known Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, so these reports are in conflict with each other regarding the exact capabilities. Although, the inclusion of a periscopic zoom lens is still common between the two. Unfortunately, it is still too early to know for sure regarding Apple’s plans for the iPhone 15 series. So stick around for more updates.

Apple’s $122 billion revenue prediction for Q4 2021 may be a new record

Apple is expected to set a new record in terms of revenue in the final quarter of 2021 thanks to improvements in iPhone production and the performance of its various services.

The information comes from Morgan Stanley lead analyst Katy Huberty (via Apple Insider) who further reports that she expects total revenue of $122.3 billion for Q4 2021, with a gross margin of 41.9% and earnings-per-share (EPS) of $1.97.

The prediction is 3% ahead of Wall Street’s figures for the same because of a number of promising data points including lesser manufacturing disruptions and strong demand in markets like China.

Huberty also believes that the iPhone lineup mostly outperformed consensus estimates, selling 83 million units in the December quarter. Her Mac estimates are a bit ahead of the consensus as well, although the iPad shipment forecast has been reduced from 17 million units to 14.9 million units.

As for Services, the analyst believes that Apple will report revenue of $19.2 billion, which means massive YoY growth of 21.7%. The reason for this is strong App Store growth in Q4 2021 along with notable growth in the company’s licensing segment that also includes Google’s search engine payments to Apple.

For the first quarter of 2022, Huberty expects a total of 55 million units of iPhone units sold, which is slightly ahead of what build numbers would suggest.

Xiaomi Mi 12 Ultra Concept renders

In the Weibo post (a Chinese microblogging website), Wang Teng, General Manager at Xiaomi China, shared the time for the virtual live conference. During this event, the official said that a number of surprises are planned to be unveiled. One of this might include more details regarding the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, which will feature the company’s most powerful imaging system. This camera system will include the brand’s self developed imaging algorithm as well. Furthermore, the executive also hinted at the new top end smartphone topping DXOMark listing in the video.

For those unaware, its predecessor, the Mi 11 Ultra, was the first to launch with the GN2 50 megapixel custom sensor that was developed with Samsung. This enabled the device to rank high in the DXOMark rankings, a known camera reviewing platform. So, we might see the latest and greatest from the Chinese tech giant top the list again.

Google AR headset reportedly in the works in an ultrasecret facility

Google is reportedly working on an Augmented Reality (AR) headset codenamed Project Iris. The device uses outward-facing cameras to record the real world and then add computer graphics on top of it, creating an immersive, mixed reality experience.

The information comes from a couple of sources familiar with the project who requested anonymity to speak without the company’s permission (via The Verge). They’ve revealed that the early prototypes are being built at a facility in the San Francisco Bay Area and look like ski goggles. The device does not need any wired connection to an external power source and is powered by a custom Google processor, just like the Google Pixel 6 series is.

As expected, the headset will be running Android, although recent job listings indicate that Google is working on a new OS for an ‘innovative AR device,’ meaning the company might soon be getting another OS to its name after Android, Chrome OS, and Fuchsia.

Given power constraints, Google’s strategy is to utilize its data centers for rendering some graphics remotely and then beaming them to the headset over the internet.

The sources have also revealed that the Pixel team is involved in Project Iris as well but it’s unknown if the headset will eventually be Pixel-branded. Still, we can be sure of the Google Glass name being off-limits since the name is still registered for the ill-fated gadget from a decade ago.

Project Iris seems to be a big deal considering its extremely secret nature, tucked away in a building that requires keycard access and everything. The core team working on it is made of roughly 300 people and Google plans on expanding it by a whole lot.

As for the release date, the AR headset could be making its way through as soon as 2024 along with Project Starline. The latter is an ultra-high-resolution video chat booth and was demoed last year.
