Samsung Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra may offer the brightest smartphone displays ever

The Samsung Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra display test results are out from the company’s own development labs and they align perfectly with the various leaks and rumors we have come across over the past few weeks.

Both models achieve peak brightness that’s higher than ever before. At a peak brightness of 1,750nits, the Galaxy phones’ displays beat not only beat their predecessors but are also easily one of the brightest around. The standard brightness level though, with auto-mode enabled, maxes out at 1,500nits (via SamMobile).

Galaxy-S22-plus-Ultra-brightness

For comparison, the latest and greatest from Apple — the iPhone 13 Pro Max — achieves ‘only’ 1000nits on High Bightness Mode and a peak brightness of 1200nits.

Meanwhile, the standard Galaxy S22 which is the first compact flagship from Samsung in years, will come with a 1000nits display. The Galaxy S21 offered the same, although the size this year is notably smaller at 6.06-inches.

Record-breaking brightness isn’t all that the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra offer though as both devices also feature fantastic contrast ratios of 3,000,000:1. You get 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, meaning colors will be extra poppy, especially when viewing HDR-supporting content.

Moving on to display sizes, the Samsung Galaxy S22+ has a 6.55-inch panel while the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s display measures 6.81-inches. The latter’s ultra large display will go well with the S-Pen it is going to ship with.

Samsung will be unveiling both phones along with the vanilla S22 some time next month, although the exact date still remains suspenseful.

Apple is working on foldable iPhones, but we may never see it

Apple is apparently working on foldable iPhones. A tipster has revealed that the company is working on a number of iterations of a foldable iPhone prototype. But don’t get your hopes up, as the brand is still unsure about the new breed of smartphones.

The news arrives from known tipster Dylandkt who shared the information on Twitter. In a new thread, he revealed that the Cupertino based giant is working on multiple prototypes of iPhones with a foldable display. These prototypes are still being tested but Apple believes that there are too many ‘compromises’ with the foldable display technology. The issues don’t stop there, as the iPhone maker is also doubtful regarding the foldable phone market in general.

Apple

Apparently, the brand is concerned regarding whether the foldable handset segment is a market that will find its place in the industry, or eventually fall into “obsolescence.” In other words, Apple is unsure if foldable phones will stick around long enough and not just become a fad that dies out. So, the company is currently planning on carefully observing the market and avoid making the same mistakes that are were made by its rivals, as per Dylandkt.

Apple

Apple has been rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone for a while now. We have already covered a number of patents (1,2) from the company as well, which detail some of the possible designs. At the moment, it seems like the company will continue to work on perfecting the technology to avoid launching what Dylan calls “beta” products like its rival. But its still unknown if the brand will eventually compete in this particular segment of the smartphone market.

While one of the cases is covered completely in stripes, the other option actually has a tiger face printed at the back. Both look equally eye-catching and will be selling for 199 Yuan or around $31. They will be available for purchase starting January 8th.

But perhaps the best part of the limited edition Year of the Tiger protective cases for the Huawei P50 series is that they come with a special metal ring around the camera module that can be pulled out and used as a stand to rest the phone on.

The metal ring also appears to provide an ample raise to the cameras so that they do not touch the surface when the phone is placed on its back. It also adds a touch of class as it’s colored lustrous gold.

Both cases add to the collection of pre-existing art-themed protective cases available for the Huawei P50 series in a number of colors and unique designs. All of the covers adopt a four-edge protective design that protects the screen against drops.

It’s unlikely that the Huawei P50 series Year of the Tiger protective case will be making it to the global market, but if it does, we will let you know.

iPhone SE 2022 will be an iPhone 8 with 5G, updated specs: Analyst

The next smartphone from Apple is said to be a budget model with 5G connectivity. This handset is expected to be called iPhone SE 2022. It will be the successor of the iPhone SE 2020, which is limited to 4G. A lesser-known Apple analyst re-iterates the features of this device, which have been under the rumor mill for a while now.

Apple iPhone SE 2020
Apple iPhone SE 2020

According to Dylan (@dylandkt), the upcoming iPhone SE will not be what he tipped last January. Instead, it will be nothing but a spec upgrade for the current-gen iPhone SE 2020.

He says that the new iPhone SE will be similar to the model available right now in terms of design. However, it will arrive with better specs and 5G connectivity.

In a nutshell, the so-called iPhone SE 2022 will look like an iPhone 8 but will feature upgrades in terms of internals. It is said that this one will be probably the last iPhone with a Touch ID-embedded home button.

Almost a year ago, the same person stated that the iPhone SE releasing in 2022 will sport a design similar to iPhone 11, however, with a smaller screen. He added that this handset will have its fingerprint sensor on the power key like the iPad Air 4th Generation.

Now, he says that an iPhone SE with the aforementioned specifics will debut in 2024.

Having said that, despite sporting an old design, the iPhone SE 2022 will reportedly reel in over a billion Android users to the Apple ecosystem.

Google forced to make changes on Nest speakers over Sonos lawsuit

Google has been involved in a legal dispute with Sonos for a while now, with the latter claiming that the former has infringed on a number of its patents and licenses on its popular products. Now, it seems that the lawsuit has proved to be favorable towards Sonos, as Google is being forced to make changes with its Nest speakers.

Google Nest Speaker

According to an AndroidPolice report, Sonos has won a major court decision after piling on a number of lawsuits and accusations of theft against the Search Engine giant. Now, the brand is being forced to make changes in some of its popular gadgets. In the worst case scenario, it is possibly even facing a ban of its products. The US International Trade Commission has just ruled in favor of Sonos earlier today (7th January 2022) after finding Google guilty of violating Sonos’ intellectual property.

This ruling also arrives following the preliminary results from August 2021, in which a judge also found the brand to be in violation of the Tariff Act of 1930. In other words, Sonos’ victory means that there will possibly be a ban on importing infringing devices that will go into effect within the next 60 days. Although, the company told The Verge that “We do not expect any impact to our ability to import or sell our products.” It also added that the customers will not experience any disruptions either.

Google

Google further elaborated on some of the upcoming changes for its Nest speakers in a forum post. For those unaware, Sonos had sought to block the sale of Google’s smart speakers, Pixel smartphones, and even Chromebooks initially. But as of right now, it remains unclear which products and series will be facing the ban or revisions. It remains to be seen if the Biden administration steps up to take action against the ruling, so stay tuned for more updates.

Google Pixel foldable phone “Pipit” spotted with key specifications at Geekbench

The appearance of the device at the benchmarking site is a good hint that the device not only exists but also the company could be internally testing it.

The Google Pipit’s Geekbench listing (via. MySmartPrice)  reveals that it is powered by an octa-core chipset with a 1.80GHz base frequency. The specifications of the processor hint the Google Pixel foldable phone could be powered by the Google Tensor chip, which also fuels the Pixel 6 series of smartphones. The device has 12 GB of RAM and Android 12 OS. In the single-core test, the device scored 4811 points and recorded 11,349 points in the multi-core test.

9to5Google’s report had revealed that the Google Pipit will be equipped with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 as the primary sensor, which could be accompanied by a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 ultrawide snapper. The inner display is also speculated to feature an 8-megapixel Sony IMX3555 camera. Another 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 is likely to be available on the outer side of the device.

The leaked information on the cameras of the Pixel foldable phone suggests that it won’t be able to offer top-notch photography experiences like the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which are packed with better cameras. The other details of the Pixel Pipit foldable are currently under the wraps.
