Google Pixel 6 can be unlocked by unregistered fingerprints in some cases

The Google Pixel 6 has been touted by Google as being “a new standard for mobile security”, and makes use of multiple technologies like TrustZone that are processed using a dedicated Titan M2 security chip. However, even with all of that security prowess, Google has seemingly overlooked the most basic aspect with its Pixel 6 series that keeps phones secure – the fingerprint scanner.

A Redditor recently posted a video of his Pixel 6 fingerprint unlock in action. The video quite clearly shows that the device has only one finger registered. But upon handing the phone over to his wife, he found that she was able to unlock it as well – with her unregistered fingerprint.

Other Redditors chimed in saying they’ve observed similar peculiarities, and many have begun to ask if the Google Pixel 6 series’ fingerprint hardware itself isn’t up to the mark.

This comes not long after an influx of complaints about the fingerprint sensor being frustratingly slow and even unresponsive. Google had responded by saying that the “enhanced security algorithms” are to blame as they may take longer to authenticate users’ fingerprints – quite ironic to say for a phone that gives a green light to unregistered fingerprints.

Google is yet to respond to the issue. And while we wait for the California-based tech giant to come up with something clever to say, let’s take the matters into our own hands and try to pinpoint the source of trouble.

So, the Pixel 6 series makes use of the now-dated optical in-display fingerprint scanner tech that works by reflecting light off of your finger. While it’s more economical, it’s not necessarily the most accurate and speediest.

The newer ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner tech first featured on the Samsung Galaxy S10 series is known to be a faster and more reliable alternative as it uses inaudible sound waves instead of light. This enables it to work quite well even through dirt, oil, grime, or water.

Had Google opted for an ultrasonic fingerprint, it’s likely that this problem would never have existed in the first place.

Another potential culprit has been pointed out by none other than the Redditors in the same post. The idea is that screen protectors may retain the fingerprint of a user on the underside and trigger phantom fingerprint detection. This may be possible but is unlikely considering a fingerprint will have to be left in the perfect location.

Regardless, Google needs to address the problem through software optimization if possible and as soon as possible. Security flaws like these, after all, don’t mean well for the image of a phone marketed as going big on security, and may even impact sales.

Realme achieves its 10 million phone sales target in 2021 ahead of schedule in China

Realme has officially reached its 10 million smartphone sales target that it had projected for the year 2021 in the Chinese market. The company had set the annual goal at the start of this year and has achieved it ahead of schedule.

Earlier this year, the Chinese smartphone maker’s Vice President, Xu Qi, had set a goal for annual sales to hit 10 million units this year. This goal was for the Chinese market in particular and the company shared this achievement earlier today (9th November 2021) on social media. We had also reported on Realme selling over 1 million units through both offline and online channels in a week, as part of the Double 11 (Singles Day) sale event.

Realme

Notably, this achievement is also indicative of the massive growth the brand has seen over the last two years. Earlier this month, Xu Qi had also stated that the company will be focusing on launching premium grade smartphones in the Chinese market with high end specifications next year, although, he refrained from revealing any further details regarding this matter. However, the brand’s mid range segment still has a strong presence in its home country’s market with the Realme Q3s being one of the most popular models in terms of sales during the Double 11 season, with over 100,000 units being sold on the first day of sale alone.

Tencent Music partners with Apple Music to expand its catalog globally

China-based Tencent Music Entertainment Group has partnered with Apple Music and as a benefit of this partnership, record labels and artists who are a part of TME Music Cloud can now distribute their music globally through Apple Music.

The company says that this will enable music lovers to explore China’s unique music culture and genres, enhancing the global discovery of Chinese music and assisting in the international development of Chinese musicians.

Tencent Music Entertainment

This development will also help promote more high-quality Chinese music overseas. It is not known what exactly TME’s “Music Cloud” is but it appears that the platform will serve small-time artists who lack distribution and marketing help from big labels.

Over the past years, Tencent Music Entertainment has built a platform for independent musicians for distributing their works, attract fans, host virtual concerts, which can eventually help them generate income.

Currently, there’s not much information available about this partnership and whatever the company has announced is quite vague. It’s unlikely that Tencent will share its expensive licensed music with Apple Music but we’ll know for sure when more details are available.

This isn’t the first time Tencent has joined hands with a major online music giant. A few years ago, in 2017, the Chinese internet giant had entered a share swapping agreement with Spotify but it didn’t include content sharing.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series smartphones to soon get One UI 4 Beta update

Samsung released the Android 12-based One UI 4 beta update for the Galaxy S21 series smartphones and recently closed the program as the South Korean giant is now gearing up to launch a stable version.

Soon after closing the One UI 4 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series, the company opened it for its recently launched foldable smartphones. Now, it appears that the last year’s Galaxy S20 series phones are next in line to receive the new beta update.

Samsung One UI 4 Featured

A moderator of the Samsung Members forum has said that the company is preparing to soon open the Android 12-based One UI 4 beta program for the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra smartphones. This development was first reported by Tizenhelp.

Further, it has also been revealed that the One UI 3.1 with firmware version ending EUI4 would be the last software update based on the Android 11 operating system from the company for these smartphones.

While Samsung has not yet shared any details related to this, it’s safe to assume that the recruitment for beta testers for the One UI 4 for the Galaxy S20 lineup could start by the end of this month. It could be limited to select markets, including South Korea, China, Germany, India, the US, and the UK.

Once the program opens and starts recruiting beta testers, all the eligible users can log into the Samsung Members application and then tap on the One UI 4 beta enrollment button from the Notices page. After enrolling, the update should be available to download within a few minutes.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE smartphone to reportedly launch only in Europe

The report further adds that the company was contemplating canceling the device, as some of the reports had indicated. However, Roh Tae-moon, head of the Mobile Division at Samsung insisted on releasing the phone.

It will be interesting to see how the Galaxy S21 FE performs in the market as the device won’t be competitive enough by the time it launches in the market. In the European market as well, the phone will be sold through select carriers only.

For the launch of this smartphone, the South Korean giant has moved the launch of its next-generation Galaxy S22-series phones from January to February. The S22 lineup is expected to launch on 8th February and will go on sale from 18th February.

Coming to the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, the device features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 or the company’s own Exynos 2100 chipsets. Both of these chips are manufactured by Samsung using the 5nm process.

OnePlus Nord 2 Blasts yet again in India

[Update] Soon after the incident, OnePlus said, “We take such incidents seriously. Our team has reached out to the user and we are in process of collecting the details to investigate this further.”

The exact reason behind the blast is still a question and the company is yet to respond to it.

[Original Story] It’s another day for the OnePlus Nord 2 and the device has yet again burnt into a dead machine. This time the incident occurred with a person in Dhule, India, and the pictures for the same were shared by a Twitter netizen named Suhit Sharma. Apparently, the phone owner kept the device in his right pocket and out of nowhere a major blast occurred resulting in some severe consequences.

Suhit on Twitter said, “Never expected this from you”, “see what your product have done. Please be prepared for the consequences. Stop playing with peoples life. Because of you that boy is suffering contact asap.”

The user also shared multiple images of the phone’s back, where the phone seems to have burnt from the bottom left side. The phone was kept in a transparent TPU case and it also seems to have ripped off from the bottom sides. While a phone blast is unfortunate, what’s miserable is the owner’s thigh. Unfortunately, the right thigh of the device owner has major burn marks. In fact, the body skin of the phone’s owner has peeled off.

With so many Nord 2 units getting exploded, OnePlus surely has some questions to answer. Once, the company responds, we’ll update the article.

It is seen that if the rumors are credible, then the new Oppo flagship will almost double the wired charging potential of its predecessor, the Find X3 Pro. Putting the monster charging potential of the Find X4 in perspective, we see that even the Google Pixel 3 is up to 5 times slower than the Find X4 series. Recent performance tests had revealed that the Pixel 3 does not achieve its stated 30W charging speed but peaks at about 22W, which is less than a fifth of the rumored potential of the Find X4 series.

Tipster Digital Chat Station is credited with the rumor of the charging power of the Find X4. Little additional details were leaked by the tipster relating to the device, although it is speculated that it will be powered by the Snapdragon 898, which is a premium offering by Qualcomm, due for unveiling on November 30. There could still be several months before the release of the Find X4 series. Some industry watchers have hazarded that the unveiling date could be March 2022. We keep our fingers crossed as we await more details from Oppo on the new Find X4 series.

Huawei will reportedly start restocking 12GB RAM variants of its phones this month

It is no longer news that Huawei‘s once boisterous smartphone division has been struggling since the US slammed a trade embargo on the Chinese tech giant. It was reported last year that the US gave a concession for the company to only access 4G chipset. Apparently, it was also impossible for the brand to purchase 12GB RAM from suppliers. This has led to the discontinuation of 12GB RAM variants of its top smartphones like the Mate 40 RS Porsche Edition.HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro Chinese New Year 2021 Limited Edition Case Featured 01

There are reports that the company is now planning to commence the sales of 12GB RAM models of its existing flagship models like the P50 and Mate 40 series. The P50 which was released earlier this year was mostly available in the 8GB RAM variant with a limited supply of the 12GB RAM version and in most platforms, it is listed as “Out of stock”.

A Weibo tipster disclosed recently that the scarcity is due to restrictions that the company is facing in the procurement of chips and other components. Apparently, the sanctions meant that the brand can only sell 6GB RAM and 8 GB RAM variants. But the tipster says the restriction has been relaxed, allowing the Chinese company to have access to the faster 12GB LPDDR5 flash memory. The tipster is speculating the brand may release the 12GB RAM variant of the Mate Fold first.

While those may come as some form of respite for the Chinese company, there is no end in sight for the firm in terms of flagship processors. The Mate 50 series is expected to launch soon in China but the processor won’t be having a 5G modem onboard but will have 4G connectivity.
