Moto E40 to launch in India on October 12, available via Flipkart

Earlier this week, Motorola had teased the arrival of a new E series smartphone in India. Now, the company has officially confirmed that the Moto E40 will be launching on 12th October 2021.

In an official Tweet from the smartphone maker, the October 12 launch date had been revealed along with the platform it will be available on. For those interested, you can purchase the new device from Flipkart, a popular e-retailer in India. The teaser that Motorola had shared earlier revealed the design of the new smartphone, which will feature a triple camera setup on the back along with a rear mounted fingerprint scanner.

Since it is an E series model, we can expect the price tag to be around the 10,000 INR (roughly 130 US Dollars) mark for the budget segment in India. Pete Lau teases the launch of OnePlus 9RT in China

OnePlus 9RT is expected to be the next smartphone from the brand. It is in the news since August. In the past couple of months, we have learned almost everything about it. Today (October 7), the company’s co-founder himself teases the arrival of this handset.

OnePlus 9R Featured 05

The latest Weibo post by Pete Lau, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of OnePlus, details the OnePus T series of smartphones released so far. In the end, the post reads that the upcoming model in the lineup will have a new name and more details will be revealed tomorrow (October 8).

Unfortunately, Weibo spoils the hype by revealing the name of the device, which is none other than ‘OnePlus 9RT’. The brand exec shared this post from the yet-to-release phone.

Last month, OnePlus revealed that there won’t be a OnePlus 9T and a OnePlus 9T Pro in 2021.  But the company did not shed details on the OnePlus 9RT. Hence, this is the first time we are hearing about the tweaked version of the OnePlus 9R officially from the brand.

According to previous reports, the OnePlus 9RT will come with features like Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera, ColorOS 12 (could be based on Android 11), 6.55-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, up to 12GB RAM/256GB storage, and three colors (blue, silver, black).

In a nutshell, the OnePlus 9RT will be a refreshed OnePlus 9R with some upgrades. Going by Pete Lau’s Weibo post, we expect the company to announce the launch date for China tomorrow.

Amazon smart refrigerator is reportedly in the works

There are indications that Amazon could be working on a smart fridge, going by feelers from some credible sources. The internal project is reportedly codenamed Project Pulse and it is being developed to help users track their inventory and purchase habits. It will help to predict what a person wants, based on his habits and preferences, and have the product delivered. Project Pulse will also help to track expiry dates, make smart suggestions on recipes based on what is available in the fridge, and interface seamlessly with Amazon’s Fresh or Whole Foods store.Amazon Logo Dark

The Amazon fridge project is believed to be at least two years old although there is no certainty whether the Amazon fridge will become a commercial product. It is also possible that the company may partner with other manufacturers to deliver the product if indeed it is primed for such.

An Amazon smart refrigerator if it becomes a reality, will seamlessly fit into Amazon’s smart home ecosystem. This will provide greater width in the number of things that could be done with the smart home system. Amazon though will not be the first tech company to delve into smart fridges – LG and Samsung have some solid niche in that area. However, Amazon’s key functionality that may showcase the fridge is the possible network functionality that will be available with such a device. Amazon’s network of grocery stores and the use of computer vision to identify items on the store will be done on the Amazon Go Stores.

As of this moment, the story remains speculative and Amazon has flatly debunked the authenticity of the story. It remains to be seen though whether an Amazon smart fridge will pop up in the future. Amazon has shown on several occasions, that it thrives on suspense and uncertainty sometimes.

Intel CEO believes a “software-first” approach will give company an edge against AMD

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who was appointed earlier this year, is betting big on a “software-first” approach to help the company rise above the competition. He suggests that software will play a much more significant role in the future of the company as he gears up to compete against a very fast-emerging AMD.

In an interview, Gelsinger admitted that Intel wasn’t in its best shape when he took over as CEO in February, thanks to tough competition from evergreen rival AMD that has seen significant growth in the past couple of years. This is combined with the delay in its delivery of 7nm chips and Nvidia’s progress in the GPU-powered AI growth engine.

intel-ceo

But the determined CEO feels that this will be changing soon through the focus on new advancements in manufacturing and architecture over the next few years, paired with Intel’s revamped integrated device manufacturing strategy, IDM 2.0 (via: TechRadar, CRN).

The only setback in Intel’s ambitious plans could be the global silicon shortage that has impacted almost all of the tech industry alike.

However, it appears that Intel will be able to capitalize on the silicon crunch to aggressively push its IDM 2.0 strategy. This should help cushion against any setbacks due to the delay in the production of its upcoming Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids processors.

Intel

The strategy, along with the said software-first approach should give Intel the future-proofing that it desperately needs.

“We have to deliver the software capabilities, and then we have to empower it, accelerate it, make it more secure with hardware underneath it. And to me, this is the big bit flip that I need to drive at Intel,” shared Gelsinger.

He added saying that if there’s anything he learned from his 11-year tenure at VMWare, it is that “delivering silicon that isn’t supported by software is a bug.”

Google to launch “Quick Phrases” that activate Assistant without saying “Hey Google”

Google Assistant will soon be receiving a new update that would enable users to use certain words to interact with the assistant without needing to say the “Hey Google” voice activation command.

According to a XDADevelopers report, the search engine giant is working on a “Quick Phrases” feature, which was spotted on a Pixel 3 XL that was running on the Android 12 Beta. As of right now, it is unknown whether Android 12 is a requirement for this new feature. The Quick Phrases feature needs to be activated in the Assistant settings. After it is turned on, the Assistant will now listen for certain phrases depending on the situation.

Google

As an example, users can turn off the alarm when it goes off by simply saying “Stop” or “Snooze” without having to first say “Hey Google.” Similarly, you can even answer calls by just saying “Answer” or reject it by saying “Decline.” Other reports had also revealed a list of other such similar commands that are believed to be a part of these Quick Phrases. This includes commands like “Cancel the alarm,” “Send a broadcast,” “What’s the weather?,” “Turn up the volume,” and “Pause the music.”

AirPods Pro update adds Conversation Boost to keep users more connected to conversations

Apple has finally enabled the Conversation Boost feature it previewed at WWDC earlier this for the second-generation AirPods Pro. A firmware carrying version number 4A400 has been rolled out to the said earphones along with AirPods and AirPods Max.

For the uninitiated, Conversation Boost makes use of beam-forming microphones and has been designed to help people with mild hearing issues hear dialog better, effectively helping to stay more connected to conversations. It works by boosting the volume of a person talking in front of you, making face-to-face conversations more audible. It is joined by an optional feature that reduces ambient noise.

You also gain access to sliders using which you can modify various parameters like amplification, transparency, and tone of what you hear.

Conversation Boost on the AirPods Pro can be enabled via Settings > Accessibility > Audio / Visual and toggling Headphone Accommodations on. Next, turn Transparency Mode and Conversation Boost on as well.

Feature not available yet? Then it is likely that you are not updated to firmware version 4A400. You can check if the update has been rolled out for you through General > About. Next, find and tap on the AirPods connected to your device, and check the firmware version.

That said, Conversation Boost isn’t the only thing new with the new update. The update also adds a new Lost Mode that uses millions of other iPhones, iPads, and Macs to aid in the search if your AirPods Pro/Max go missing. If they come within the Bluetooth range of another Apple device, you’ll be alerted about their location.

Xiaomi usually launches its Redmi K series of budget flagship smartphones in the second half of a year. But now, a company official has revealed that the series is facing difficulties in production due to the chip shortage.

Redmi

Earlier today (7th October 2021), Wang Teng Thomas, the product manager of the Chinese smartphone maker (Via MyDrivers), revealed that the Redmi K40S series is facing issues in production. In other words, the K40S series might have its launch delayed slightly or its possible that the lineup might not be launched entirely. Although, this is just speculation as of right now, so take it with a pinch of salt.

As per previous reports, the Redmi K40S will be a rebranded Xiaomi 11T series, which is similar to the K30S being a rebranded Mi 10T series last year. Apple to be charged by Europe’s antitrust regulators over NFC chip in iPhone

European antitrust regulators are reportedly set to charge technology giant Apple with anti-competitive practices regarding the NFC chip inside iPhones and Apple Pay. It is said that the charges are being finalized and be sent to Apple sometime next year.

Apple

For those who are unaware, last year, the European Commission had opened an investigation into Apple Pay and the iPhone’s NFC chip last year. It was focusing on whether Apple unfairly locked out competition for contactless payment services by restricting the use of the NFC chip inside iPhones.

While details about the report remain unclear, it says that Apple is set to be charged with “anti-competitive practices related to its NFC chip technology.” Apple could be forced to “open up its mobile payment system to rivals.”

Apple has been slowly opening access to the NFC in the iPhone, but compared to its integration with Apple Pay, third-party services are still significantly hindered.

The development comes at a time when Apple has been found in breach of competition law related to its music streaming service in Europe earlier this year. Following complaints from Spotify, the EU competition commission said that Apple unfairly favors Apple Music over rival streaming services due to the fees imposed on App Store applications.

Samsung postpones its next-gen 3nm chip production until next year

Nowadays, 5nm manufacturing is the most advanced technology when it comes to making modern chips. Now, companies are working on the next generation of chipset manufacturing tech and the next major thing could be 3nm manufacturing.

A couple of years back, Samsung had unveiled the 3GAE (3nm Gate-All-Around Early) and 3GAP (3nm Gate-All-Around Plus) nodes, promising substantial reduction in power consumption and enhancements in overall performance.

Now, the South Korean giant has announced the postponement of the 3nm chip manufacturing technology until 2022. Not just that, the company has also postponed the 2nm chip until 2025.

Samsung chip foundry uses cutting-edge technologies to manufacture chipsets and includes the likes of Qualcomm, IBM, and Samsung itself as its clients. The company competes against TSMC, which also announced a few months back that will postpone the launch of its 3nm chipset.

At the time of its announcement in 2019, Samsung had claimed that the 3nm process could offer a 35 percent performance jump, in addition to a 50 percent reduction in power consumption when compared with the 7LPP nodes technique.

Postponement of the newer technology makes sense given that the chip manufacturers are under immense pressure to keep producing chips as there’s currently a global shortage of chips and the company wants to go with the established process with a high yield rate compared to the experimental process.

Samsung Foundry is the second-largest smartphone chip-maker after TSMC. It is an independent arm of Samsung and continues to provide critical supplies which is the reason behind the South Korean technology giant weathering the global chip shortage without significantly affecting the business.

Google Pixel 6 series listing in Germany reveals pricing details and pre-order gift

After unveiling the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro premium flagship smartphones a few weeks ago, the technology giant recently confirmed that it will be hosting a launch event on 19th October to officially announce the smartphones.

Now, ahead of the official launch, we know the phone’s pricing as well as release date, thanks to its listing in Germany. The Google Pixel 6 is said to be priced at €649 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage version.

Google Pixel 6 lineup Germany details leak

It has also been revealed that those customers who pre-order the Pixel 6 series smartphones will get the Bose 700 Headphones which are worth €279.99. In the US, the phone will reportedly be priced at $749.

The offer is valid until 27th October which implies that the device will be available for purchase from 28th October, which is in line with the previous reports.

The listing further reveals that the smartphone will come powered by a 4,620mAh battery. In the camera department, there’s a dual-camera setup on the back that includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel secondary snapper.

On the front side, the device will come equipped with an 8-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling. The phone will also have an in-display fingerprint sensor as well as support for Face Unlock using the RGB camera.

Google Pixel 6

Coming to the Pixel 6 Pro, previous reports have indicated that the device will be priced around €899 in Europe and between $1,049 and $1,099 in the United States. The phone will come with an additional 48-megapixel telephoto camera and pack a bit bigger 5,000mAh battery. It is expected to have up to 12GB of RAM and three storage options to choose from — 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Both the smartphones will come pre-installed with the latest Android 12 operating system. The Pixel 6 lineup is expected to be among the best smartphones launching this year and the company is also at an advantage as iPhone 13 series doesn’t come with major updates, not enough to entice users to upgrade and many of them are waiting for the Pixel 6 lineup to switch instead of getting the iPhone 13.

The JP Morgan analyst notes the production ramping up process on iPhone 13 lineup is moving forward at a slower pace than it was on earlier iPhones and the main bottleneck behind this is the camera module issues.

While Covid cases and multiple restrictions have contributed to the sluggish production in Vietnam, the root cause revolves around the supplier ramp of sensor-shift optical image stabilization. But the situation will improve as restrictions will be relaxed and LG Innotek’s camera facility along with a secondary unit in South Korea is set to boost the production at a pace that is required.

There are more issues hovering over iPhone 13 supply as smaller components may be terribly impacted if the power shortage issues in China persist. However, larger components are out of trouble for now so that’s good news. The analyst believes 5-10 million units out of the 143 million planned units could be affected due to this. But despite that, Apple continues to stay in a comfortable position in terms of sales.

The analyst maintains his Apple price target of $180, based on a price-to-earnings multiple of 28x on JP Morgan’s 2023 earnings estimate of $6.55.
