Huawei’s Freelace Lite Wireless Earphones has an 18-hour battery life and costs ¥269 (~$42)

Huawei’s event today wasn’t only for the Nova 9 series. It also announced a handful of new products and accessories, one of which is the Freelace Lite Wireless Earphones.

Huawei Freelace Lite featured

The Freelace Lite is the third neck-band-styled wireless headphones in the Freelace series. It joins the Freelace Pro Wireless Earphones announced last year and the Freelace Wireless Earphones announced in 2019.

Just like its siblings, it too boasts incredible battery life and fast charging. According to Huawei, the Freelace Lite has an 18-hour battery life and a quick 5-minute charge will provide 4 hours of playback time. A full charge takes 70 minutes.

Huawei Freelace Lite features

The earphones have a semi-in-ear design with soft hooks made from skin-friendly silicone to keep them in your ears. Inside each earbud is a 13mm dynamic coil and they contain magnets. When the earbuds are attached to each other, it pauses playback, and separating them resumes playback.

Huawei says the 110ms low latency also makes it great for playing games. The Freelace Lite connects via Bluetooth 5.2, has a quick pair function that works with devices running EMUI 10 and above, and an IP55 rating.

The Freelace Lite has an in-line remote with three 3D buttons – a function key that serves as the power button, pairing button, reset button, and playback control button; and two volume buttons which can also be used to call up the voice assistant on your phone. You can connect it to two devices at the same time, and a quick press of the two volume control buttons will quickly switch it to the last connected device

Huawei has put a price tag of ¥269 (~$42) on the earbuds and it is already available for pre-order on Vmall. It can be ordered in yellow, green, black, or blue.

Moto E40 full specs and renders leaked, will cost under €200

The Moto E series will be getting a new model soon and it is expected to launch as the Moto E40. Ahead of the launch of the phone, a leak has revealed all of its key specs as well as a price range.

Moto E40

The Moto E40 will have a 6.53-inch display. The screen has an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate according to the young German blogger, Nils Ahrensmerier of Mobilegeeks, who posted the specifications on Twitter.

A Geekbench result already revealed that the chipset is a Unisoc processor and now we know it is the Unisoc T700, the same one inside the Moto G20 that was announced in April. Motorola will ship the phone with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. We expect there will be other configurations at launch.

For its cameras, the Moto E40 will have a 48MP primary rear camera and two 2MP sensors. The 2MP cameras are most likely macro and depth sensors. In front is an 8MP camera that should suffice for video calls and selfies.

There is a 5000mAh battery inside the phone that charges at 10W. While that is slow in 2021, the big battery should mean most of your charging will happen overnight. The Moto E40 will run Android 11 out of the box with Motorola’s My UX on top. With respect to the price, Nils says that the phone will cost between €160 – €170 ($188 – $199).

The Motorola E40 renders show that it has a centered punch hole for the front-facing camera, vertically arranged triple cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The back appears to be polycarbonate and it has a wavy pattern to make it easier to grip. The power button is textured and above it is the volume rocker and a third button we believe is to call up the Google Assistant.

EU intensifies push for unified USB-C use by manufacturers including Apple

The executive arm of the European Union, the European Commission, is intensifying efforts to ensure that smartphone OEMs adopt a single USB-C charging port on their devices. The EU had first made a case for the adoption of a single charger in 2018 and has since then been making efforts to get manufacturers to adopt this policy aimed at reducing environmental wastes. The efforts haven’t reduced the desired result as Apple has opposed the proposal. USB-C

Apparently, the commission is poised to move ahead with the proposal by adopting legislation to that effect. The commission has announced plans to push ahead with the proposal. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton disclosed in a press conference that the proposals only cover wired connectivity and don’t extend to wireless gadgets or chargers.

The new revised Radio Equipment Directive proposal won’t be limited to smartphones but will extend to other devices such as cameras, videogame consoles, tablets, headphones, and portable speakers. Also, the proposal will compel manufacturers to make their fast-charging standards uniform and to also provide information to customers about what charging standards their device supports.

The proposal still has a long way to go before it will become a law. It will be subjected to a vote at the European Parliament. If it succeeds in getting the majority vote, manufacturers will get a 24-month window to implement it on their devices.  There is no doubt that the EU parliament will vote in favor of the proposal having earlier in 2020 voted in a related proposal that sought to make manufacturers adopt a common charger for all devices.

Honor MagicBook V 14 latest leak reveals extremely narrow bezels & touchscreen display

Honor will host its Smart Life product launch event on September 26 where it will be unveiling multiple devices like the MagicBook 16 Pro, Honor Wisdom Screen X2, and others. One of them is the Honor MagicBook V 14 – a Windows laptop with a 5MP dual-camera setup. And now, some more details regarding it have been leaked.

Some ‘users’, as per IT Home, have provided a few sketches and other details about the Honor MagicBook V 14. The sketches show that the laptop will be equipped with a large screen with extremely narrow bezels, thus resulting in a pretty high screen-to-body ratio.

honor-magicbook-v14-leak

The laptop will also come with a touch screen display and have high-end features such as ‘R2 rounded corners.’

Previously, Honor had confirmed that the upcoming MagicBook V 14 laptop will sport a 5-megapixel dual-camera setup. While the company has not yet confirmed this, we expect a wide-angle camera sensor to offer a larger field of view, along with a regular camera.

The laptop is already confirmed to be one of the first to boot into Windows 11 out-of-the-box. Honor and Microsoft had held a strategic ceremony at Honor HQ, Shenzhen announcing this. Apart from this, Honor had said that it is capable of maximizing the potential of Windows 11 with its advanced capabilities in software and hardware integration.

Not much information about the Honor MagicBook V 14 is available at the moment apart from the aforementioned, but we should be getting more details about its specifications, looks, pricing, and availability with the upcoming September 26 event.

Oppo pushes for advances in 5G with Ericsson to fill void left by Huawei

Oppo has partnered up with Ericsson to aggressively push for development and advances in 5G technology. The move arrives to fill the void in the smartphone industry that was left by Huawei, who was blacklisted by the US government.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G 7

According to an SCMP report, the Chinese smartphone maker is working with the Swedish telecommunications giant to further advance 5G technologies. Just last week, the former revealed its upgraded communications laboratory in Shenzhen, China through its partnership with Ericsson. This site will be responsible for conducting 5G research and development activities, which include protocol updates and regional tuning to test for upcoming smartphones.

Furthermore, the company’s lab in Shenzhen will also focus on exploring potential killer apps that could fully utilize the “promise of 5G mobile technology,” and also improve the user experience in terms of power consumption, as per Chris Shu, Oppo’s vice president and general manager of product strategy and cooperation. Shu further added that the brand will be using its own software capabilities to push new developments in 5G technology.

huawei

At the moment, the smartphone maker is also building its new headquarters in the city. This location will consist of four planned towers, with the tallest one will contain 42 storeys and reach a height of 200 meters. The push for 5G development from Oppo arrives as its rival Huawei, has struggled due to the impact of US sanctions. While Huawei was once a major contender in the smartphone market, its presence has fallen greatly due to the near crippling effect the blacklist caused. Now, the brand faces tighter restrictions when sourcing materials and other technology, which would be the perfect opportunity for Oppo to seize the market.

Camera-focused Huawei Nova 9 series launches with two 32MP selfie cameras, Snapdragon 778G, and 100W fast charge

Huawei has announced its new Nova 9 series of smartphones in China today. The new Nova phones are focused on providing the best-in-class camera performance and Huawei has pulled all the stops to achieve this. The Nova 9 series also comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G chipset, and an incredibly fast charging technology.

Huawei nova 9 series

Nova 9 and Nova 9 Pro Specs

The Nova 9 has a 6.57-inch 2340 x 1080 screen while the Nova 9 Pro packs a bigger 6.72-inch 2676 x 1236 screen. Both displays are curved OLED panels with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 300Hz touch sampling rate, and a P3 color gamut. One distinguishing feature is that the standard model has a centered punch hole for a single camera while the pro model has a bigger cut-out on the top left corner for two cameras.

Both Nova 9 phones have the Snapdragon 778G processor under their hood but with 4G instead of 5G. The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM and both phones will be available in 128GB and 256GB configurations.

The cameras are an important part of these phones, so we will talk about them under a separate heading. For the rest of the specs, the Nova 9 has a 4300mAh battery capacity with support for 66W fast charging while the Nova 9 Pro has a smaller 4000mAh battery but charges faster at 100W. Huawei claims the pro model will charge from empty to full in 20 minutes. The pro model also has VC + graphene cooling to keep the temperature down when playing games or running CPU-intensive tasks.

The two phones have Bluetooth 5.2 with support for LDAC, NFC with support for payment, dual-band Wi-Fi, dual-SIM support, dual-frequency GPS with support for NavIC, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Huawei will ship both phones with HarmonyOS 2 out of the box.

Huawei Nova 9 series cameras

The camera department is one of the major differences between both phones. The Nova 9 Pro has two 32MP front-facing cameras – one sensor is an ultrawide angle camera with an f/2.4 aperture while the other is an f/2.0 portrait camera. On the Nova 9, there is a single 32MP front-facing camera.

Huawei says the front cameras can record in 4K, slow motion, shoot portrait videos, and have video stabilization. There is also night mode for videos, and support for recording time-lapse videos. For photos, users can take ultrawide angle selfies, portrait selfies, and portrait selfies with night mode.

On the back, the Nova 9 and Nova 9 Pro have four cameras – a 50MP f/1.9 RYYB main camera that captures up to 40% more light than a regular camera. There is also an 8MP ultrawide angle camera, a 2MP depth of field camera, and a 2MP macro camera.

The rear camera packs several features such as vlog mode, audio zoom, night mode, dual view video which allows you to record from both the front and rear cameras at the same time, and timelapse mode. One interesting feature is Multi-camera mode which allows you to connect to a nearby phone and get more angles for the shot you want to take or the video you are recording. The two phones also come with Petal Clip, a one-click video-editing software.

Huawei Nova 9 Series Price and Availability

The Nova 9 is priced at ¥2699 (~$418) for the 8+128GB version and ¥2999 (~$464) for the 8+256GB version. The Nova 9 Pro starts at ¥3499 (~$542) for the 8+128GB version while the 8+256GB version is ¥3899 (~$604).

Both phones will be available for pre-order starting today and will be open for purchase on September 29.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series could arrive in these colors

Samsung is yet to launch the long-awaited Galaxy S21 FE. However, we have already started hearing about the Galaxy S22 series. Thanks to a new report, we now know in what colors the successor of the Galaxy S21 series will be available.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Phantom Gray White Pink Violet Featured

According to a report by GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S22 series will be near-identical to the Galaxy S21 series in terms of design. However, the upcoming phones will be available in different colors.

As per the publication, the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup will arrive in the following colors.

  • Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+

    • White
    • Black
    • Rose Gold
    • Green

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra

    • White
    • Black
    • Dark Red

The Rose Gold hue option of Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ is said to be different from the current-gen Phantom Pink color. Whereas, the Green color could be similar to the Phantom Green version of Galaxy Z Fold3.

Lastly, the publication has no idea about the Red-colored Galaxy S22 Ultra. But it does suggest that this particular red shade will most likely be different from the red-color Galaxy smartphones that have been released so far.

Having said that, some of these hues could be limited to certain regions. They could be even exclusive to Samsung.com. Also, since we are still months away from the launch, there could be more colors and some of these colors could also change.

As mentioned in the beginning, the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup is in the news for some time now. In fact, most of the features of these devices are already out. You can learn about them here.

Huawei to launch new openEuler OS on September 25

Huawei had initially announced the openEuler program back in 2019 as an open source operating system and released the 20.03 LTS edition last year. Now, the company is gearing up for the launch of a new openEuler OS that is set to be announced on September 25.

Prior to this announcement, the Chinese tech giant’s founder Rei Zhengei (Via HuaweiCentral) stated that the company will be increasing its efforts into strengthening the digital infrastructures. Furthermore, the brand will also aim to provide a sustained and reliable foundation for this platform. The upcoming openEuler operating system is an open source and free Linux distribution platform that will offer an open community for developers across the globe.

Huawei

Notably, Huawei had previously confirmed that upgrade plan for openEuler. The version 22.03 will be released next year  and will be based on Linux Kernel 5.10. As of right now, the company ranks at the top in the contribution of the Linux Kernel 5.10 patches. For those unaware, the openEuler is a platform that is designed in collaboration with other major tech giants. Its an effort to create a unified and open OS that will support multi processor structures that will advance the hardware and software application ecosystem.

Google now reportedly replacing Pixel 3 & 3 XL units bricked with EDL mode

Reports of Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices dying early deaths have been circulating for around a year. However, Google now appears to actually be doing something about it, as per multiple reports on Reddit.

Google’s ‘Advanced Hardware Support Team’ has likely been contacting some users (via: PiunikaWeb) that had earlier fruitlessly complained about their Google Pixel 3 series device getting bricked because of getting locked into EDL mode, saying that they are offering a replacement.

Pixel 3 XL

“A few days ago I received an email from the Advanced Hardware Support Team saying they wanted to offer me a replacement because they were needing to look at some of these devices. I quickly shipped out my bricked 3XL and they’re supposed to be sending me a replacement device, unsure what model it will be yet,” says one user.

The move is surprising considering Google Support was previously unhelpful for such cases due to expired warranties on most affected devices. It is unclear at the moment as to what model is being offered as a replacement, although most believe that it will be a refurbished Pixel 3 or 3 XL, judging from support’s usual behavior.

The reports from users being offered replacements are few at the moment, but we should hopefully be seeing more of it happening. After all, the problem seems to be occurring randomly, likely due to some hardware fault, with the users having nothing to do with it.

Google Pixel 3 XL

For the uninitiated, the Google Pixel 3 series EDL bricking issue is a fairly widespread one with reports about it still piling up on Google’s Issue Tracker, support forums, and Reddit for a year or so. All the affected say the same thing – their Pixel 3/3 XL shut down one fine day for no good reason and failed to ever power on again. Attempting to boot up the device results in it going into the Qualcomm recovery mode called ‘Emergency Download (EDL).’ The usual tricks to flash a fresh Android ROM are unhelpful because the bricked device stays put in the EDL mode and refuses to go into the regular fastboot mode.

Google had recently confirmed that it indeed is aware of the problem but said that it had “nothing to add” at the time. However, the California-based company now seems compelled to do something about the issue, probably because mishandling of the Pixel 3 series fiasco can translate to bad publicity, which can potentially impact Pixel 6 sales. Although, we hope that it is nothing but good intentions.

American watchmaker Fossil has launched its latest Gen 6 smartwatch in India. The Fossil Gen 6 was first launched for the global market a couple of weeks back and now, it is available in India. The watch comes with a higher price tag than what it sells in the U.S. The watch starts at Rs. 23,995 (~$325) for the 42mm model and goes up to Rs. 24,995 (~$339) for the 44mm model. For reference, the Gen 6 starts at $299 in the US.

Fossil Gen 6 featured

Fossil Gen 6 arrives as the first smartwatch to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ processor. This is said to bring up to 30% performance improvement compared to the Gen 5. The processor is paired with 1GB of RAM and there is 8GB of storage onboard.

The watch sports a 1.28-inch touchscreen AMOLED display. The watch is encased in a stainless steel case and is available in 44mm and 42mm case size options. The 44mm variant comes in four color options while the 42mm size is available in 3 color options.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic Thom Browne Edition goes official for $799.99

Last month, Samsung announced the Thom Browne Editions of Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. The company is now back again with Galaxy Watch4 Classic Thom Browne Edition. The limited-edition smartwatch carries a premium price tag and will hit the shelves next week.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition 02

The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic Thom Browne Edition is priced at $799.99 in the US. It will be sold in limited quantities on September 29 via Samsung.com.

The watch arrives with a costlier price tag for multiple reasons. First of all, it has fashion designer Thome Browne’s name on it. Secondly, unlike the regular Galaxy Watch4 Classic, this variant features rhodium plating.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition 01

Further, it ships with three interchangeable straps – leather, rubber, and fabric. All three straps have different colors and patterns. The wearable also comes with five pre-loaded Thom Browne watch faces.

But unfortunately, the special edition of the Galaxy Watch4 Classic only arrives in a 42mm Bluetooth version. This caveat is probably the only deciding factor for buyers, in addition to a premium tag.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition 03

Either way, collectors won’t mind these two factors and will buy the product anyway. If you are one of those people and reside in the US, then make sure to place your order as soon the wearable goes on sale next week.

Meizu launches PANDAER co-branded Mechancial Keyboard & Transparent Power Bank

Earlier this week, Meizu has just launched a number of new consumer electronic products. Out of these, two new products arrives as a collaboration and includes a mechanical keyboard and a transparent power bank.

Meizu

Talking about the keyboard first, the company had previously teased PANDAER X IQUNIX Mechanical Keyboard earlier this month. And now, the keyboard is finally here and is targeted towards young professionals and gamers alike. Its trendy design is cleared geared towards the younger demographic and features 83 keys with PBT keycaps. It has a semi transparent design and offers either Cherry switches or TTC switches, along with support for full key hot swapping as well. The second product Meizu launched that is a part of a collaboration is a transparent power bank. It is the PANDAER X SHARGE 118W Transparent power bank, and as the name suggests, features a transparent outer shell. POCO India has an event on Sep. 30, new C-series phone expected

Have a hard time catching up with the long list of products that have launched this month? There are still more lined up including a new product from POCO that is scheduled to launch next week.

The POCO India Twitter account revealed today that it has an announcement set for September 30 at noon. From the poster, the new product is expected to be a new phone under its C-series.

The last POCO C-series smartphone announced by the Xiaomi-owned company is the POCO C3. It launched in October of 2020 which means it is almost a year old. Considering the refresh time between devices, it is a surprise that a successor wasn’t announced sooner.

The POCO C3 was a success in India, selling more than 2 million units in its first 9 months. That isn’t bad for a phone that launched for roughly $100. We want to believe the successor will also have a super affordable price tag.

The C3 launched with very similar specs to the Redmi 9C. The key differences between the two phones are a smaller screen and the lack of a fingerprint scanner on the Redmi 9C. There are speculations that its successor may be similar to a Redmi phone. However, considering there isn’t a Redmi 10C yet, we may see the roles get reversed with POCO launching the phone first and then Redmi relaunching it under its own brand in another market.

OnePlus once again details ColorOS 12 update plan for its devices

Last week, OPPO unveiled ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 in China. The company even disclosed the list of OPPO and OnePlus smartphones that will be updated to the latest version of its mobile operating system. A few days later, OnePlus once again clarifies the ColorOS 12 update schedule for its devices.

ColorOS 12 Logo Featured A

Liu Fengshuo, the COO of OnePlus who also happens to be the head of the company’s R&D department, has shared further details about the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 update for OnePlus phones.

According to the executive, the brand will follow the timeline that was shared at the end of the ColorOS 12 announcement. As per that plan, the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro will receive the public beta update in October, while the remaining eligible devices will get access in the first half of 2022.

The exec details that the OnePlus 9R will get the beta update in January 2022 itself. He also says that users will be notified at the end of each month regarding the update schedule for the upcoming month.

For those unaware, OPPO has a habit of sharing the ColorOS update plan every month. Hence, it’s not surprising to learn that it will continue to do so for the next iteration of its operating system.

Lastly, he clarifies that although the OnePlus 7/7T and OnePlus 8/8T series of handsets will receive the update later than the OnePlus 9R, the firm will complete the public beta rollout by the end of H1 2022. The reason behind the delay is that these smartphones will be migrated from HydrogenOS to ColorOS.

Additionally, OnePlus Community Manager Jian Lan Shuai has revealed that users who installed ColorOS Early Access update on OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T will not be receiving an OTA update to ColorOS 12. In order to receive the new update, they will have to switch back to HydrogenOS.

Having said that, since we are months away from the stipulated update timeline for the older OnePlus phones, we expect the brand to let out more details in the coming days.

5G smartphone shipments rise in emerging markets as competition heats up

5G smartphone shipments in Q2 2021 rose 6.5% QoQ in emerging markets, even as the total shipments in such regions dropped by 5% in the same time frame, as per the latest data from Counterpoint Market Monitor Service.

The enthusiasm generated by Apple‘s first 5G-capable device, the iPhone 12, as well as the introduction of 5G models in the budget segments by OEMs such as OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Realme, can be linked to the increase in 5G shipments. In addition, emerging economies, particularly Southeast Asia and the Middle East, are catching up in terms of 5G infrastructure, which is driving up demand for low-cost 5G phones (via: Counterpoint).

Increasing Share of 5G in Shipments

Smartphone OEMs, particularly in emerging markets, are now prioritizing 5G products in their portfolios. Take Realme for example, whose 5G share in its emerging market smartphone shipments went up from 8.8% in Q1 to 15.9% in Q2. The brand has seen the most substantial growth among the competition with a 135% YoY global shipment increase to 15 million in Q2 2021.

The OEM now ranks sixth for the first time. Realme’s global scene is quite positive as well where its 5G device shipments have risen by 37.0% in Q2, up from an increase of 22.7% in Q1.

5G Battle Heating up in Emerging Markets

5G smartphones are turning standard in the developed markets, particularly in countries like the US. However, the same cannot be said about emerging markets where 4G smartphones continue to be sold, particularly in the more wallet-friendly end of the spectrum. This means that such markets have the maximum potential for growth.

The Indian market serves as a great example for this case and has seen 75.5% QoQ growth in 5G device shipments. It will likely continue to demonstrate similar growth rates until the rest of the year and beyond.

Countries in Southeast Asia will also likely see a 5G shipment increase in the second half of 2021. But the real difference will be made in 2022 when 5G will go live commercially.

With more and more affordable 5G offerings hitting the market, the involved OEMs should witness a considerable jump in their market shares. No OEM would like to miss out on this wave and we should hence be seeing the decline of 4G-only phones.
