Leaker reveals Honor Magic3 series will include a Porsche edition

Huawei was one of the first Chinese manufacturers to partner with an automobile company. The partnership was with Porsche Design and it resulted in the launch of multiple Porsche Design edition Huawei phones and even a Porsche Design Huawei smartwatch. However, this partnership never extended to its former subsidiary, Honor. Now, that Honor is no longer a Huawei-owned company, and following Huawei’s own struggling business, it appears Porsche Design and Honor now have a partnership.

Evidence of this is a leak from China that has revealed that the upcoming Magic3 series will have a Porsche edition. The source of the info is the Weibo leaker @Bald Panda who listed three models in the Magic3 series as well as specifications of the pro model.

According to him, the Magic3 series includes the Magic3, Magic3 Pro, and the Magic3 Porsche. Surprisingly, there is no mention of the Magic3 SE and the Magic3 Pro+ whose names were revealed in another leak last month.

Honor Magic 3 Porsche Edition

He goes on to say that Magic3 Pro, which shares a similar design to the Huawei Mate 40 Pro announced last year, will have support for 66W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging. It will also have 3D face unlock, quad rear cameras that include a 50MP sensor and three 64MP sensors, a Snapdragon 888 Plus processor, and run Magic UI 5.0 out of the box.

While the leaker does have a good track record, we advise that the information be taken with a pinch of salt as we haven’t seen any concrete evidence to back up his claims. Nevertheless, we won’t have to wait for too long as the Magic 3 series launches in a few days.

Xiaomi’s upcoming second-gen OLED TV will be available in two sizes

Xiaomi recently announced that it would hold a launch event on August 10 where the Mi Mix 4 will be the star product. Apart from the flagship Mi Mix 4, the brand will also launch the Mi Pad 5, a high-end smart speaker, and a new generation OLED smart TV.Mi TV

Xiaomi launched its first OLED smart TV last year when the Mi TV Masters series was unveiled. The upcoming OLED TV will be the brand’s second OLED TV and a recent teaser poster proclaiming that it will “define OLED TVs again.”

While the fine details of the OLED TV are not yet in the open, the second-gen Xiaomi OLED TV has been put up for reservations in China at Jingdong (JD.com). The product page shows that the smart TV will be available in two different sizes of 55 inches and 65 inches. This is about all that was revealed in the listing.Mi TV

However, it is worthy of note that the Mi TV Master Series that was launched last year is available in just a 65-inch display size. The first-gen Mi OLED TV  also has a 4K resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and supports 120Hz refresh rate, MEMC motion compensation, VRR variable refresh rate, and automatic switching of ALLM game mode. It utilizes a four-sided bezel-less full-screen design with a screen-to-body ratio of up to 98.8%. Other features onboard the Mi TV Master series 65-inch OLED include glass stand, RGB at the bottom, metal remote, DC Dimming, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Always-on Display (AOD), and professional gaming mode.

We expect nothing less from the second-generation Mi OLED TV and even more premium features.

Xiaomi releases photo of Mi Pad 5’s retail box, live image of keyboard case leaks too

Xiaomi will announce the Mi Pad 5 series this week alongside the Mi MIX 4 on Tuesday. Ahead of the launch, the manufacturer has shared an image of the tablet’s retail box. A live photo of the keyboard case has also appeared online.

The Mi Pad 5 will come in a large white box that is pretty wide but just a few inches thick. There is a Xiaomi logo at the top right corner of the box while the name of the tablet is written in the center and on the side of the box.

Mi Pad 5 retail box

Based on the thickness of the box, we want to believe the Mi Pad 5 may not come with a charger included. That wouldn’t be surprising as Xiaomi’s flagship phones released this year don’t have a power adapter included in the box. However, Xiaomi does provide an option for buyers to get a charger for free. So there is a possibility the same thing will happen with the Mi Pad 5.

The poster shows a second box, but in black, and partly covered by the white one. While we can’t see what is written on the box, a leaked image on Weibo has revealed that is the retail box for the Mi Pad 5 Pro.

The color of the box is not the only difference. As you can see in the photo, the Mi Pad 5 will also have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. These are high-end features and proof that the Mi Pad 5 Pro will be a flagship tablet.

A leak from last month revealed that the Mi Pad 5 and Mi Pad 5 Pro will also differ with respect to processors and charging technology. The Pro model will have a Snapdragon 870 processor and 67W fast wired charging while the standard version will have a Snapdragon 860 processor and a slower charging speed.

Finally, a live photo of the keyboard (above) case has also been posted on Weibo. Shared on the social media platform by Digital Chat Station, it shows the green colorway of the optional accessory. There is a squircle-shaped cut-out on the back for the tablet’s camera housing and there is a seam that runs across which we believe is for the kickstand built into the case.

The Mi Pad 5 series launches in China on Tuesday, August 11.

Some US Republican Congressmen push for blacklisting of Honor just like Huawei

A group of Republican Congressmen has written a letter to the US Commerce Department requesting that former Huawei subsidiary, Honor Device Co. be included in the US government’s Entity List.Huawei

The group is led by ranking Congressman, Representative Michael McCaul, and claims that Honor was spurned off by Huawei in 2020 to evade the stringent sanctions that were slapped on the parent company Huawei, in 2019. The Congressmen stated that Honor is already accessing chip and software supplies from American suppliers, which would not have happened if Huawei did not divest from Honor in 2020. There are still suspicions that Honor is still state-owned even though a consortium of 30 investors bought the company from Huawei last year.

A Commerce Department spokesperson, in responding to the letter, said that the Commerce Department appreciates the perspectives of the House Republicans. He noted that the Commerce Department is continually reviewing available information to identify potential additions to the Entity List.

Huawei came under the hammer in 2019, as it was blacklisted from accessing chip and software solutions from US companies. The sanctions virtually ground Huawei’s global operations to halt. The recently released half-year financial report of Huawei reflected massive declines across several segments of its operations.

Huawei divested from Honor in 2020 when it was sold to a group of investors. It is believed that the US claim of Huawei being a front for the Chinese government, may also apply to Honor.

Huawei seems to have weathered the blacklisting well with a new business focused on having a software pivot that makes the company able to withstand shocks in the future, as well as diversify.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the letter would be. An official statement from any of the parties is yet to be released.

Xiaomi Mi Band 6 latest firmware update brings flashlight function to the wearable

Xiaomi Mi Band 6, launched for the global market as Mi Smart Band 6, is the successor to the Mi Smart Band 5 and it has already enjoyed a firmware update back in April 2021. It is a very popular wearable device both in China and in other regions where it is currently available. It is small, lightweight (weighs just 12.8g), affordable, and comes with some extended features.

The previous firmware update of the Mi Smart Band 6 saw the addition of breath monitoring during sleep tracking. The new firmware update which has version number 1.0,4.38 has now added a flashlight feature and support for more languages. The rollout of the new update is already running in the UK, Kuwait, and the Czech Republic, while other countries will enjoy the update subsequently. The new flashlight feature will help users to have better visibility in dark places. It illuminates the screen of the Mi Smart Band 6 when activated although it is not as powerful as that of a smartphone, for example.

Users of the Mi Smart Band 6 who want to update their firmware are advised to first update the Mi Fit app to version 5.3.0 so as to have a seamless update. Going by the trajectory of updates for the Mi Smart Band 6, additional features have been gradually added to the device whenever there is a new firmware update. The device provides several monitoring options including menstrual cycle tracking for women, blood sugar monitoring (SpO2), heart rate tracking, and additional sports modes from its predecessor.

The Mi Smart Band 6 has a 1.56-inch AMOLED touch screen with a sharp 325ppi resolution and a capacitive display, with no touch-sensitive key present. It is 5ATM waterproof-rated and its 125mAh battery can last up to 2 weeks of normal usage. The Mi Smart Band 6 has a magnetic charger that can charge the device from 5% to 100% in under 2 hours.

The Mi Smart Band 6 is yet to be available in some countries including India, so we expect more rollout information from Xiaomi soon.

Huawei sees its biggest ever decline in revenues after US blacklisting

Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei was the global leader in 5G technology before the US blacklist began in 2019. The company endured a turbulent period subsequently, as it grappled with a stiffer US sanction. The impact of the US blacklist is reflected in the financials of the company, as it released its mid-year report showing a 29.4% decline in its overall revenue of CNY 320.4 billion ($49.5 billion) from last year. The consumer electronics arm of the company was the most affected with revenue plummeting by 47% from 2020. This was due to the chip challenges and software blockade that resulted from the US blacklist. Significantly, Huawei had to sell its Honor brand as a survival strategy.Huawei

However, the half-year results also reflect the new focus of Huawei in the pursuit of its ambition as a software hub. The revenue from enterprise activities grew by about 18.2% from last year, and this is predicted to continue in an upward movement. Huawei’s resilience is reflected in its expanding ecosystem which includes cloud-based solutions. The HarmonyOS operating system which rivals Google’s Android OS is Huawei’s perfect response to the US blacklist. Currently, there are over 15 million devices using HarmonyOS, and this is bound to increase by the year’s end.

Recent months have seen a great number of product launches by Huawei, and the outlook remains bright for the rest of the year. The full-year results may show a strong rebound going by the raft of products and software solutions already in place. Hence the company may have just seen its worst year yet.

Huawei’s President Eric Xu says survival is paramount, as it seeks to balance itself and prevent future shocks with its software pivot. The company is building resilience through diversification and is pursuing a sustainable survival plan within the next 5 years.
