Apple iPad Pro with M1 chips have an irreparable security flaw

The propriety M1 Chip from Apple has already made its way to a number of the company’s products. This includes MacBooks, iMacs, iMac mini, and even the iPad Pro. Now, a new report has found that the iPad Pro with the company’s silicon has an irreparable security flaw.

Apple m1 chip

According to developer Hector Martin (Via PhoneArena), the M1 based iPad Pro suffers from a vulnerability that exists on a hardware level of the M1. In other words, this is an issue that cannot be fixed through a simple software update. The Cupertino based giant has apparently violated an Arm architecture specification requirement as well. This means that there is no simple method of fixing the issue.

The developer further explained that the flaw basically allows two applications to covertly exchange data without using normal operating system features. While this is a vulnerability, it, fortunately, does not pose any serious security risks. Even in a worst case scenario this security risk would only enable advertisers for cross app tracking and can not be used by hackers to take control of one’s device or even steal sensitive information. Although, the flaw still violates the OS security model.

Apple iPad Pro

Furthermore, this issue affects every M1 device, which means it could even affect the iPhone 12 series as well since the A14 Bionic is based on the same CPU microarchitecture. The developer said that the only way of fixing this is to run the entire operating system as a virtual machine (VM). But that is not exactly a feasible repair to the issue. Hector believes that the flaw could even affect the next generation M1X chipset as well, but will be fixed in the following generation in the future.

Design of Vivo’s upcoming first tablet leaks online

Vivo, the Chinese smartphone brand, is reportedly working on the company’s first tablet device which could soon get launched in the market. While Vivo has not yet confirmed this, an image of the device’s design has surfaced online.

Vivo Tablet Design Leak

The image shows that the device will come with a full-screen display without any notches on top for the front-facing camera. However, there’s no front-facing camera visible on the device, which is highly unlikely. So, it remains to be seen where the camera will be placed.

As for the rear camera, it appears that there will be a dual-camera setup with an LED flash, all placed inside a rectangle-shaped camera module. There are volume rocket keys on the left and a power button on the right.

As noted above, when launched, this will be the first tablet from Vivo. It will become of the few Chinese smartphone makers to enter the tablet market, making it to the list of companies that include Huawei and Xioami.

It seems that Vivo is now focusing on more categories for new products and not just focus on the smartphone market, which has become highly competitive. It recently launched the Vivo TWS 2 earphones in China and now the company is gearing up to launch tablet.

Global Smartwatch shipments surge by 35% in Q1 2021: Report

A new report has revealed that the global smartwatch market has seen notable growth of 35 percent year on year in the first quarter of this year. Apple led the market and even saw a whopping 50 percent growth year on year as well.

Global Smartwatch

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Cupertino based giant led the market thanks to the robust demand for its latest Series 6 models. The iPhone maker’s overall market share also rose by 3 percent. Meanwhile, Samsung shipments also rose by 27 percent year on year, with its Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active series being in demand. However, the South Korean smartphone maker’s growth was below the overall market average and it even saw a slight decline in its market share.

Similarly, Huawei also saw a fall in its market share in this category, despite having a strong performance in the same period a year ago. The smartwatch shipments include basic smartwatches with low level proprietary OS, wearables for children, and even high end smartwatches as well. Senior Analyst Sujeong Lim said that “Apple was able to further solidify its leadership position in the market by widening the portfolio from Watch SE to Series 6 at the right time. This may drive Samsung to launch a mid-price-tier model to boost growth.”

Global Smartwatch

Lim further added that “Huawei continued to face headwinds because of the declining smartwatch sales and how well Huawei watches are optimized for its smartphones. Will be interesting to see when Huawei launches its first watch based on HarmonyOS, as it hinted at the Huawei Analyst Summit last month. This should kickstart a new ecosystem for developers to build experiences for the wrist. But it will warrant a HarmonyOS phone as well for the complete experience. HONOR, spun off from Huawei, should open up new opportunities for players such as Google and Qualcomm.”

The Meizu Watch is expected to offer users health and fitness-focused features. It is unclear whether the wearable device is equipped with an NFC chip for making contactless payments. JD.com, Meituan, and Neolix receive permit to test autonomous vehicle deliveries in Beijing

Beijing Metropolitan authority has granted JD.com, Meituan, and Neolix to test their autonomous vehicle delivery system on some designated public roads within the Beijing suburbs. Specifically, the driverless delivery vans will run a pilot scheme within the Yizhuang Development Area. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the local authorities.JD Logistics autonomous vehicle deliveries

According to reports, the requisite 5G infrastructure needed for the rollout of driverless delivery service in the Yizhuang neighborhood is already in place. The three companies granted the permit have differing goals. While JD.com and Meituan seek these self-driving delivery vans to meet up demand from its core business concerns, Neolix is a young startup focused on retail, surveillance, and other city services. Neolix is backed by Li Auto, a budding electric vehicle manufacturer.autonomous vehicle deliveries

The new driverless delivery scheme is bound to impact positively on the operations of JD.com, as it may scale down the number of delivery staff needed for its activities in the target area. Meituan draws from a pool of riders to carry out restaurant deliveries, enhanced with the new driverless delivery system.autonomous vehicle deliveries

About 150 self-driving delivery vans would be deployed by Neolix by June, according to the company. It is still unclear the scale of deployment of the delivery robots by JD.com and Meituan, as both companies were yet to provide public information on their plans.

There are strict safety rules that must be met by each of the companies, including on-the-spot or remote safety drivers, to react to the fluid dynamics of these robots interfacing with pedestrians. Each company has developed the self-driving technology to an appreciable level for its deployment and hopes this pilot run will be highly successful. Each of the delivery vans is customized to interact with customers excellently.

Japan wants TSMC and Sony to build 20-nanometre chip production plant

Japanese government wants Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world’s leading chip manufacturer, and Sony Group to build the country’s first 20-nanomemter chip plant.

TSMC Featured

If the companies agree to do this, then the factory would be built close to Sony’s image sensor plant in Southwest Japan. The details ceom from a proposal floated by Japan’s trade and industry ministry, says the report.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that “stable chip supplies are important for Japan to maintain its international competitiveness” but has not commented on this development of building a 20nm chip plant. A ministry spokesman said to Reuters that the report was not true but declined to elaborate.

Simlar to the United States, Japan is also looking for wats to boost semiconductor production in the country to ensure that its companies have easier access to critical components for making devices.

The issues come after the trade war between the United States and China, which resulted in concerns about majority of the chip production in the world is located in Taiwan. The global shortage of chips is also one of the contributing factors for expansion of facilities to other regions to ensure steady flow of critical components.

First look at Honor’s 100W SuperCharge Power Adapter

A few weeks ago, an Honor phone with the model number “RNA-AN00” was certified by the agency in charge of issuing the China Compulsory Certificate. The certification page revealed that the device supports 100W fast charging. Now, an image of an Honor-branded charger with an output of 100W has surfaced on the web.

The image was posted on Weibo by the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, and it shows the power adapter will come in white and have a full-sized USB port instead of a USB-C port as we have seen with a lot of high output chargers. Even the Baseus 100W GaN charger has a USB-C port. Nevertheless, the 100W Honor SuperCharge power adapter is portable and fits in the palm.

There are speculations that the charger is for the Honor RNA-AN00 which is believed to be the Honor 50 Pro. Since the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G processor, there is a chance that Honor is also making use of Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 technology.

Regardless of if this charger is bundled with the Honor 50 Pro, we can be sure that it will ship with an Honor phone in the near future, probably the Honor Magic 3 or the foldable Honor Magic planned for later this year.

Design

Nubia Z30 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro all feature an amazing design with a glass back, an aluminum frame, and a curved display with very narrow bezels. Which one should you go for? It is mostly a matter of taste. Just consider that the OnePlus 9 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro are waterproof with the IP68 certification and the latter also offers the latest Corning protection: Gorilla Glass Victus. Which one would you pick?

Display

Nubia Z30 Pro has the highest refresh rate with 144 Hz, but the OnePlus 9 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro come with better displays and they feature higher Quad HD+ resolutions. The OnePlus 9 Pro has the same panel as the OPPO Find X3 Pro with one billion colors, 10-bit color depth, and LTPO technology: it is definitely the most advanced one. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro comes right after with its Quad HD+ AMOLED display and a 120 Hz refresh rate. All the phones feature an in-display fingerprint reader.

Hardware/Software

Nubia Z30 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro are powered by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform and they offer a flagship-class level of performance. There is a phone which is slightly better than the other: the highest-end configuration of the Nubia Z30 Pro which packs 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. OnePlus 9 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro sport a max of 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The three handsets come with Android 11 out of the box and highly customized user interfaces. The UI of the Oneplus 9 Pro changes depending on the market: it has ColorOS in China and OxygenOS in the rest of the world.

Camera

All of these devices are astonishing camera phones. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro is the inferior one as it comes with less stunning sensors, but it is still a high-end camera phone. The battle is between the Hasselblad quad-camera of the Oneplus 9 Pro and the triple 64 MP camera + 8 MP periscope sensor of the Nubia Z30 Pro. The latter looks like the best one on the paper.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro has the biggest battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh and it provides the longest battery life on a single charge. Unfortunately, the Nubia Z30 Pro is the only one to lack wireless charging, but it supports faster wired charging with a power of 120W.

ZTE Nubia Z30 Pro vs OnePlus 9 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro: Price

Nubia Z30 Pro is priced at about €640/$780 in China, the OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $766/€629, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro begins at €725/$885. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison: the Nubia Z30 Pro has stunning cameras and faster charging (but lacks wireless charging), the OnePlus 9 Pro (my fave) comes with an amazing display, great cameras, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro has a bigger battery but inferior cameras. Which one would you choose?

DIZO is the first brand under realme’s TechLife ecosystem

realme is expanding its TechLife ecosystem with new partners. Yesterday, it announced that its first partner is DIZO, an Indian-based brand that will also make products for the ecosystem.

According to the official DIZO website, it will launch products under the following categories – Smart Entertainment, Smart Home, Smart Care, and Accessories. realme, on the other hand, will provide Industrial Design, Supply Chain, and AIoT Experience.

DIZO is yet to announce what its first product will be and when we should expect it. However, it has revealed that it will offer after-sales services in over 320 service centers across over 310 cities. Its after-sales service will be available in both English and Hindi languages.

realme’s TechLife Ecosystem product lineup is currently made up of smart bulbs, motion sensor lights, home security cameras, smart scale, and smart plugs. We want to believe products from its partner companies will include these and more. They will also work together, so users can control them from their phones.

DIZO is the first but we can expect to see more brands join the ecosystem in the near future.

Xiaomi Mi 9 receives MIUI 12.5 update, Android 11 tags along

The Mi 9 was Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone for the first half of 2019. The smartphone debuted with MIUI 10 based on Android 9.0 Pie. It was later updated to Android 10 and MIUI 11 in the same year. Then, in 2020, the device received MIUI 12 update as well. Now, the company has started rolling MIUI 12.5 update for the Mi 9 along with Android 11.

Xiaomi has been seeding MIUI 12.5 update to eligible phones for the past few weeks. At the same time, the company has been also rolling out the Android 11 update for some devices.

Hence, the latest system update for Mi 9 not only brings MIUI 12.5 but also Android 11. This update is currently live in China with build number V12.5.3.0.RFACNXM and April 2021 security patches.

Like any other newly released public MIUI build, this one is currently in the Stable Beta phase. This means it is being rolled out in batches. Therefore, the update is only available for a select few users right now.

Anyway, the Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 update for Mi 9 should be seeded out to more users in China in the coming days. Similarly, international variants of this handset should also get this update in near future.
