Dec 11, 2018

While the on-going U.S.-China trade war is not directly impacting the smartphone market, the tensions are high and it’s hitting both the sides. Currently, the U.S. government is pushing hard to ban Chinese smartphones, including devices from Huawei.

At a time when Huawei is facing this issue, which is likely to hurt the company’s business, its business partners are siding with the Chinese technology giant. Menpad, a Shenzhen-based LCD display maker, which is also a supplier for Huawei, has comes up with a new policy to fine employees for buying Apple iPhones.

According to the reports, Menpad has asked its employees not to purchase iPhones and if they do, they will be fined the amount equivalent to its market price. It’s not yet clear how the company will charge the fine, but it could be deducted from their paychecks.

It doesn’t stop there. The company is also offering incentives for purchasing Huawei and ZTE‘s smartphones. The China-based company says that it will give 15 percent subsidy to the employees who buy devices from Huawei and ZTE.

In a show of nationalistic pride and support for Chinese companies, it also said that it will cease to buy any American products such as office equipment, computer, and cars. Further, it says to have doubled the sales commission to any employee who manages to sell its products to the United States.

In a statement, the company said: “If employees buy an iPhone for themselves, the company will impose a 100 percent penalty on the basis of the phone’s market price.” It added that the measures will be valid for three years, effective from December 7.

The move comes after Huawei issued a public letter to its suppliers all over the globe, criticizing the US for “pressuring a company by all means” and calling for continued support from its suppliers. The letter was issued as Canada confirmed it had arrested Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou at the request of the US.

Qualcomm Case: Court barred Apple from importing and selling older iPhones in China

By

Dec 11, 2018

It’s a win for the chipmaker, Qualcomm in a case against Apple where the court has ordered a ban of old iPhone sales in China. Qualcomm has won a preliminary injunction against the Cupertino giant in the Chinese court that would ban the sale of teh old iPhones. Namely, the Old iPhones includes iPhone 6S, 6S Pus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, Plus, and X.

It’s a part of Qualcomm and Apple long ranging battles which started last year after some accusations from each other. Recently, Qualcomm claimed that Apple stole its source code and shared it with the rival modem supplier, Intel. The tussle between both the giants is increasing with every court order.

In detail, the court accepted that Apple is infringing on the patents that are held by Qualcomm in the country for different features. Majorly, the features such as resizing pictures and managing applications are violating the patents. In order to bypass the court order, Apple needs to bring an update to all the devices in China. They can simply eliminate the features which are infringing on the Qualcomm patents.

Well, in response to the court’s move in Qualcomm case, Apple commented, “Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world.”

Qualcomm’s Don Rosenberg, general counsel of Qualcomm said, “Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us.”

Recently, Qualcomm talked about the dialogue that is still going with the Apple. At that time, CEO promised that a resolution about the whole scenario is on the way and they are positively working on it.

We hope in the future, Qualcomm and Apple should resolve their conflicts formally rather than bashing each other in the courts. It’s helpful for both the companies and the tech world.

Huawei‘s sub-brand, Honor, was founded in 2013 and in a few weeks, the brand will celebrate its fifth anniversary. The brand which started as an online-only brand has now grown to become a household name in the mobile industry. To mark this growth, Honor unveiled a new logo at its HonorArtology event today and claims that it has grown up.

The new Honor logo switches to uppercase and has gradient colors.

The biggest change in the new logo is the switch from lowercase alphabets to uppercase alphabets. Also, the logo has ditched its silver chrome appearance for a gradient color which it says its a way to show it is still a brand for the younger generation.

The Honor logo should start appearing on phones and other products next year but we won’t be surprised if they start with the Honor V20 and View20 set to launch later this month and in January respectively. Nevertheless, Honor has switched to the new logo on its social media accounts and official website.
