Realme 2 to pack Snapdragon SoC, could be priced under Rs. 10,000 ($143)

Realme, the newly formed smartphone brand after its split from parent company Oppo, has already scheduled a launch event in India on August 28 where the company will unveil its Realme 2 smartphone.

Earlier, we reported that the phone could be a Flipkart exclusive device and today, the company has confirmed that the Realme 2 will indeed be a Flipkart exclusive smartphone. Further, the company has also revealed that the phone will be priced under Rs. 10,000 ($143) as the company said that it’ll be first phone to come with a notched display under Rs. 10,000.

Realme has also revealed that the smartphone will feature a notched display and come with a dual camera sensors on the back panel. In addition, unlike the Oppo Realme 1, the smartphone will also have a fingerprint sensor on the back panel, for added security.

Now, the company has also confirmed that the Realme 2 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. However, it’s not yet known which particular chipset from Qualcomm will power the device. Its predecessor, the Realme 1 was powered by MediaTek’s Helio P60 octa-core processor.

The phone will feature a 6.2-inch display and will offer 88.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. It’ll be fuelled by a massive 4,300mAh battery that should easily last for an entire day on single charge.

It’s also known that the phone will be available in three color options — Black, Blue, and Red. For more details, including the phone’s full specifications, pricing and availability information, we’ll have to wait for the company to officially launch the phone on August 28.

To recall, the Realme 1 comes with a 6-inch Full-HD+ display and is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 SoC clocked at 2GHz with a dual-core AI-specific chip. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front snapper. It runs on Android Oreo-based ColorOS and is fuelled by a 3,410mAh battery.

Huawei, which is now leading the Chinese smartphone market, is preparing to launch its new flagship smartphone — Mate 20-series, which includes Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Mate 20 Lite. In case you are wondering what these devices will be running on — Android Oreo or Android Pie, we now have an answer.

According to the Eurasian Economic Comission (EEC), which certified the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro with model numbers LYA-L29 and HMA-L29 respectively, both the devices will be running the latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system out-of-the-box.

However, the Mate 20 Lite, which has not yet been certified by EEC, could come with the older Android Oreo operating system, as revealed through the recent benchmark listing. Apart from the Mate 20-series devices, another device has also been certified — Huawei Y9 (2019), aka JKM-LX1, which will Android 8.0 Oreo at launch.

Chinese smartphone shipments witness 12% drop, Huawei leads the market

Rising Sun Data, an analytics firm has published a report on China for smartphone shipments of the first half of this year. According to the report, the region witnessed a massive 12 percent drop in smartphone shipments on a yearly basis.

While the total smartphone shipments in the region dropped significantly, the homegrown company Huawei takes the top spot for the first time, leading the smartphones market in China with 29 percent market share. It’s noteworthy that the Huawei’s market share is a combination of both brands — Huawei and Honor.

If the market share of both brands is considered separately, then Oppo takes the lead with around 20.1 percent market and Vivo grabs the second spot with around 16.9 percent market share, edging out Honor which managed to grab 16.7 percent market share, according to the report.

Xiaomi takes the fourth position in China’s smartphone market share with around 15.1 percent and Huawei grabs the fifth position with 12.7 percent share. US-based Apple comes in the sixth place with 8.9 percent market share — the first non-Chinese smartphone manufacturer in the list.

The report adds that over 90 percent of overall smartphone sales in China in the first half of the year were from the companies ranked in the Top 5 list. This is believed to be the direct consequences of stagnating market where larger player squeeze out smaller players.

Recently, a report from Canalys suggested that the Chinese phone market witnessed 8 percent drop in Q2 year-on-year. The same firm had reported that the Chinese phone market slumped by 21% year on year in Q1 this year.

Globally, Huawei also managed to overtake Apple in smartphone shipments to grab the second spot, according to the reports from IDC, Canalys, and Strategy Analytics. While Huawei shipped more than 54 million devices in the second quarter of this year, Apple managed to ship 41.3 million iPhones.

Before the announcement of the Moto P30, there was a leak that revealed Motorola would launch three new devices. Those three devices are the Moto P30, the Moto P30 Play, and the Moto P30 Note. With the Moto P30 out of the way, that leaves the Play and Note variants. A new info that has surfaced online has confirmed the identity of the Moto P30 Note.

According to the info, the Moto P30 Note’s model number is X51942-1 which is the same as that of the device which showed up on TENAA last month and has been referred to as the Moto One Power. So one can say that the Moto P30 Note is the Moto One Power but note that the former may launch first.

Based on the TENAA listing, the Moto P30 Note will come with a 6.18-inch FHD+ display and will be powered by a 1.8GHz processor (Snapdragon 636). It will have 3GB/4GB/6GB of RAM with 32GB/64GB of expandable storage.

A 16MP + 5MP dual camera combo will grace its back and an 8MP front-facing camera will sit within the notch in front. It will also have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which has a Motorola logo on top.

Lenovo announces five new tablets, two running Android Oreo (Go Edition)

Lenovo is one of the top manufacturers still making Android tablets. Today, the Chinese manufacturer announced five new ones with sizes between 7 and 10-inches and pricing starting at $69.99.

Lenovo Tab E7

The Lenovo Tab E7 is the first Android Go tablet in the market, proving that Google’s Android OS for devices with 1GB RAM or less isn’t for phones only. The tablet has a 7-inch display as the name says with a 1200 x 600 resolution. It is powered by a MediaTek MT8167 (4 x Cortex A35 cores) with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

Don’t expect anything great with the 2MP rear camera and the VGA front camera. A 2750mAh battery is under the polycarbonate body which Lenovo says should suffice for 5 hours of video playback.

The Lenovo Tab E7 will be exclusive to Walmart and will sell for $69.99 when it goes on sale in October.

The Tab E8 is next in terms of pricing. It has an 8-inch 1280 x 800 display, an MT8163B quad-core chipset with an ARM Mali-T720 GPU. It also has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, expandable via a MicroSD card slot.

It packs a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. Surprisingly, it runs Android Nougat and not Android Oreo. It also has a 4850mAh battery for up to 10 hours of movie watching.

The Lenovo Tab E8 will sell for $99 and can be purchased on Walmart starting today.

The Lenovo Tab E10 has a 10-inch 1280 x 800 display. It comes with the four years old Snapdragon 210 processor and it is paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

It also has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera like the E8 but adds stereo front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos. The Lenovo Tab E10 has a 4850mAh battery and also runs Android Oreo (Go Edition). It will sell for about $130 when it goes on sale in October.

Lenovo Tab M10

The Tab M10 has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1080 screen. It has a Snapdragon 450 processor just like that of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 and has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

There are stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and battery is also 4850mAh. Cameras are the same configuration as the E10 (5MP on the rear and 2MP in front). Thankfully, it runs the full version of Android Oreo.

Lenovo Tab P10

Last but not the least is the Lenovo Tab P10 also packs a 10.1-inch screen but with a 1920 x 1200 resolution and slimmer bezels. It is powered by the Snapdragon 450 also but comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Xiaomi unveils the Turok Steinhardt Driving Glass priced at 199 yuan ($29)

A survey conducted by optometrists on consumers in Germany and the United States showed that about 83% of glasses wearers have a similar habit of driving. Of these figures, 72% even hope to have a pair of driving glasses. Perhaps, to provide a solution to this rising demand, the Turok Steinhardt Driving Glass has been launched on Xiaomi’s Youpin platform. The eyeglasses are basically for driving but it looks like a cool fashion item. It combines lens design and lens coating to provide driver assistance in poor visibility.

In order to increase the comfortability, the TS driving glass is specially designed with new technological features such as adjustable nose pads and adjustable temples to make it more comfortable to wear. It incorporates the Turok Steinhardt pupil sensitization balance technology to balance or compensate for a certain degree of nighttime pupil dilation, shallow depth of field, and its negative impact on achieving a clear vision of the front scene. Car headlights, street lights, and glare from watery surfaces can threaten drivers’ safe driving due to glares. The TS driving glass comes with drilled cubic aurora film that can reduce glare by up to 64% thus reducing driving time when road conditions, weather and lighting conditions are poor.

In addition, the TS driving progressive film can increase the maximum viewing range by 43% compared with the similar progressive film, and the long-distance viewing area can increase by up to 14%, which makes it easier for the wearer to grasp the detailed road information.

The Turok Steinhardt Driving glass is presently available on Xiaomi Youpin for just 199 yuan ($29).

Huawei P20 series, Mate 10 Pro get significant discount before upcoming launch

Huawei Mate 20 series isn’t too far away from its official unveiling. The Chinese tech giant has already disclosed that the Kirin 980 chipset will be released at IFA Berlin 2018 on August 31. The company’s first 7nm Kirin 980 chipset will power the Mate 20 models. Perhaps to clear its existing stock before the arrival of the Mate 20, Huawei has adjusted the prices of the P20 series as well as the Mate 10 Pro.

Presently, all the P20 models are now 400 yuan ($58) cheaper while the P20 Pro models have a 500 yuan (~$73) flat price cut. Consequently, the Huawei P20 6GB+64GB version is offered for 3388 yuan, the 6GB+128GB version for 3888 yuan ($492). While the P20 Pro 6GB+64GB version now retails for 4488 yuan ($652), the 6GB+128GB version for 4988 yuan ($725), the 6GB+256GB version for 5788 yuan ($841).

Huawei also slashed the price of the Mate 10 Pro but this is a limited time offer. The two models of the Mate 10 Pro are offered for 400 yuan less their prices and you can buy now in China for 3599 yuan ($523) for the 6GB + 64GB version while the 6GB + 128GB version comes with a price tag of 3999 yuan ($581). With the sales figures released by Huawei which showed the company has sold up to 20 millions P20 units this year, it is unlikely that the company has a large inventory of all the models in stock. So, the stock may get exhausted in no distant time. The Mate 10 Pro may likely not be available on the official channel after the Mate 20 is launched but the P20 and P20 could still be available until next year when we’ll see the P30.

OPPO R17 launched with SD 670, Onscreen fingerprint, Gradient back and Gorilla Glass 6

OPPO has launched the much-anticipated R17 mid-range flagship. The OPPO R17 was unveiled alongside the R17 Pro at an event held in Shanghai, China.

The OPPO R17 comes with a 6.4-inch water drop display with a 91.5% screen ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The device also comes with a valley-like notch on top of the display which houses the selfie camera. The bezels on all four sides are considerably small. At the back, the R17 features a magical gradient design that comes in a variety of colours including Streamer Blue, Neon Violet, and Foggy gradients. The fog light gradient uses 3D fog glass and a new condensing grading process so that the colours blend with each other on the back of the phone, and the flow gradually changes with the light and shadow, and the recognition is extremely high.

In terms of its specification, the OPPO R17 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset. The R17 is the first model to come with the new Snapdragon 670 processor. The SD 670 chipset was announced by Qualcomm earlier this month and GeekBench records had shown that the chipset is very much similar in performance to the equally new Snapdragon 710 chipset but a little less powerful. the Snapdragon 670 is a 10nm chipset. It even has the same Kryo 360 cores (eight) as the SDM710 but is clocked at 2.0GHz. The chipset is also equipped with an Adreno 615 GPU as against Adreno 616 GPU on the SDM710. The R17 comes in two RAM versions – 6GB and 8GB RAM, both pairing up with 128GB of internal storage. Providing the interface is the Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.2 while a 3500mAh battery with support for VOOC fast charging keeps the lights on.

Furthermore, the OPPO R17 comes with a new light-sensitive fingerprint technology which is under the display of the phone. The screen comes with built-in super-sensing components of which a single pixel is 1.25 micron, thus improving the light utilization and sensitivity. The phone will be unlocked in just seconds if a registered fingerprint touches the sensitive area of the screen. The fingerprint technology also supports WeChat payment And Alipay payment.

On the camera end, the device packs a 25MP front-facing shooter. The camera comes with 8 models and supports real-time viewing of beauty effects. The camera also has artificial intelligence which learns the users’ beauty habits. At the rear, there is a dual camera setup comprising of a 21MP main sensor and an 8MP depth of field sensor. The rear camera also comes with artificial intelligence.

OPPO R17 Price

Talking of the price, the 6GB + 128GB version is priced at 3199 yuan ($465) while the 8GB + 128GB version goes for 3499 yuan ($508). The fog light gradient colour available in 8GB + 128GB memory goes for 3599 yuan (~$523).

HTC to launch new device on August 30, might be the U12 Life

HTC took to Twitter in the early hours of today to announce that it has an event on August 30. The tweet includes a caption that reads “Beauty and power meet on August 30th 2018” and is accompanied by a poster which teases the product belongs to the U-series.

Based on previous rumors, the phone we think HTC may unveil on that day is the HTC U12 Life, a successor to the mid-range U11 Life from last year. The phone is expected to come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636, a 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 1080 x 2160 resolution. It will also have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

For optics, the HTC U12 Life will have 12MP + 5MP dual rear cameras and a single 13MP front-facing camera with its own selfie flash. The new 18:9 aspect ratio will mean the fingerprint scanner will find a new home and the back of the phone is the most likely position.

Huawei’s latest teaser confirms Kirin 980 launches August 31

Huawei will be attending this year’s edition of IFA which begins on August 31 and will run till September 5. Huawei will most likely not be announcing any new phones but it sure will take the wraps off its latest flagship processor, the Kirin 980, and a new video teaser from the manufacturer further confirms this.

The 7-second video was uploaded on Weibo today and it reveals Huawei will have a live event on the first day of the trade show. While the video doesn’t explicitly mention that the Kirin 980 will be announced, one can see the shape of a chipset in the video.

The Kirin 980 will appear first in the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro set to launch in October. The new chipset will also appear in other Huawei and Honor flagships such as the Honor V11/View 11 and the Huawei P30 series which launches next year.
