OPPO R17 Geekbench listing reaffirms similarity between SD710 and SD670

A smartphone suspected to be OPPO‘s latest R17 smartphone has been spotted on GeekBench. The device comes with the model number OPPO PBEM00 but is suspected to be the OPPO R17. Just as announced yesterday at the launch event, the GeekBench model has 8GB of RAM. However, the device is listed as having a Snapdragon 710 chipset onboard instead of the Snapdragon 670 announced during the launch.OPPO R17

Tere are two possible explanations for this confusing listing. The first and most likely explanation is the similarity between SDM710 and SDM670. Snapdragon 670 was announced recently with the same configuration as the Snapdragon 710 but with a different clock frequency. Twitter tipster Roland Quandt had alerted that the Geekbench listing shows the similarity between SDM710 and SDM670 chipset since the 670 is identified as 710. However, a look at the Snapdragon 670 Geekbench performance shows a similar score of 1863 points on the single core test and a multi-core score of 5,256 points. The OPPO PBEM00 model was able to garner a 1718 single core test score and 5834 points on the multi-core test. This is also not so different from Snapdragon 710 GeekBench score.

The second likely explanation is that OPPO will launch a second model with the Snapdragon 710 chipset. The Chinese phone maker is also rumoured as having an R17 Pro model in the works. The R17 Pro is rumoured to pack three rear camera sensors with variable aperture. The model is also suspected to pack a Snapdragon 710 chipset onboard but this is just a speculation. The R17 Pro, if it ever will be released, could still utilise a Snapdragon 670 chipset.

OPPO R17 Pro confirmed to arrive with variable aperture

Smartphone manufacturers are putting lot of efforts to offer better photography experience in dim-light conditions. Yesterday, OPPO had launched the R17 smartphone, but it did not reveal anything about the R17 Pro. Today, through a dedicated Weibo post on R17 Pro, OPPO has confirmed that it will carry support for variable aperture.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ is the first smartphone that offers support variable aperture between f/1.5 and f/2.4. The same feature has been inherited by Galaxy Note 9. Dubbed as Smart Aperture on the OPPO R17 Pro, the variable aperture feature will allow its users to switch the size of the aperture according to the intensity of the light. Hence, the OPPO R17 Pro users will be able to capture brighter shots in low light conditions.

It seems that the variable aperture will not be available on the OPPO R17 as its web page does not contain any information on it. This indicates that the R17 will have a basic AI dual camera setup. On the other side, the R17 Pro will have some advanced camera features such as Super Night Mode and Smart Aperture. It is speculated that the R17 Pro could be sporting a triple camera module. However, the Weibo post has not information on it.

Probably, the OPPO R17 Pro will be borrowing most of its specs from the R17 phone. The R17 features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with water drop notch, Snapdragon 670 SoC, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup, in-display fingerprint reader, 25-megapixel front-facing camera, ColorOS 5.2 based Android 8.1 Oreo and 3,500mAh battery with VOOC fast charging technology.

Xiaomi or Samsung, which company is leading the Indian smartphone market?

Samsung and Xiaomi are two of the leading smartphone vendors in India. While Samsung has been dominating in India in terms of the smartphone market share, Xiaomi recently overtook Samsung to be at the pole position.

However, the recent reports regarding the smartphone market share in India have created confusion. While Counterpoint Research and Canalys ranked Samsung as the leading brand in India in Q2 2018, the IDC report places Xiaomi at the top.

India Smartphone Market Share Q2 2018

Today, market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has crowned Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi as the leading smartphone brand in India with a market share of 29.7 percent. Samsung stands second with a market share of 23.9 percent while Vivo and Oppo grab the third and fourth position, respectively.

Earlier, Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research suggested that South Korean giant Samsung had reclaimed the top spot in the second quarter of 2018 in India with 29 percent share against Xiaomi’s 28 percent market share.

Canalys, a Singapore-based market research firm revealed that Samsung shipped 9.9 million smartphones in India in the second quarter of 2018, registering almost a 50 percent annual growth rate. The same report said that Xiaomi shipped 9.9 million smartphones — the best quarter it had in the country so far.

Now, according to IDC’s latest Quarterly Smartphone Tracker, approximately one out of three smartphones sold in India in the second quarter was a Xiaomi device. In the online market, it continued to be the number one vendor with 55.6 percent market share, for the seventh consecutive quarter.

Commenting on this development, Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India, said:

Our mission to deliver amazing products at honest pricing has changed people’s lives and started a new chapter in the mobile Internet era in India and I believe we will become an even bigger part of people’s lives.

The IDC report also added that four out of the top five smartphones in Q2 2018 were Xiaomi smartphones – Redmi 5A, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Redmi Note 5, and Redmi 5, which accounted for 26 percent of overall smartphone shipments.

Apart from Xiaomi, Huawei is the other Chinese phone manufacturer that is also climbing the ladder in the Indian market. In the online segment, Huawei registered strong shipments of its Honor-branded phones and grabbed the second spot with an all-time high of 8 percent share in Q2 2018.

According to IDC, the Indian smartphone market saw an overall healthy growth of 20 percent in the second quarter with a total of 33.5 million units being shipped. The strong growth is being attributed to the slew of online-exclusive launches and strong shipments by offline-heavy vendors.

Details of Samsung Galaxy S10′ triple cameras surface

For its next S-series flagship phones, It has been reported that Samsung will equip them with triple rear cameras just like the Huawei P20 Pro.

Details of the camera configuration were revealed today by the Korean media and it is safe to say, the Galaxy S10 will be a camera beast.

According to the source, the Galaxy S10 will have a combination of a 12MP wide-angle camera, a 16MP super wide-angle sensor, and a 13MP telephoto camera for up to at least 3x zoom. The Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note9 which both have dual cameras use a wide-angle + telephoto combination.

Unlike this year where the Galaxy S9 and S9+ differ with respect to their number of cameras, the Galaxy S10 and S10+ won’t follow that pattern. Both will have triple rear cameras while the S10 Lite which is said to have a flat display will have just two.

There is good news for those who prefer Samsung’s A-series. It has been reported that Samsung will also equip them with triple rear cameras and they may even get it first since they usually launch earlier than the S-series. Do note that the triple-camera feature will be for the high-end A-series. One of the A-series smartphones is said to sport a 32MP + 8MP + 5MP configuration.

Samsung is not the only Korean company working on a triple camera phone. The upcoming LG V40 is said to also have but a device recently spotted online which seems to be the V40 based on a number of reasons has dual cameras.

The U.S carriers that will get the device on November 2 include AT&T and Verizon as well as Telcel for Mexico. Only the aluminium version will ship in Black and Shadow colours. These models will be priced at $1295. The Titanium-clad version will not be available from the carriers until 2019. Even when it becomes available next year, the stock will be extremely small.

For those who have already made pre-orders for the smartphone, theirs will start shipping on October 9. The aluminium-built models will ship first while the Titanium variants will follow shortly. Meanwhile, RED will release limited units to developers as part of a programme dubbed Houdini from August 31st and September 11.
