Meizu 16 first camera samples highlight a great detail

Today, after several leaks, Meizu has finally unveiled its new line-up of flagships composed of Meizu 16 and 16 Plus, which can be surely defined the most impressive devices ever released from the Chinese company. However, they share the same camera department as their predecessors Meizu 15 and 15 Plus launched a few months ago. But this does not mean their camera performance is the same as the previous line-up thanks to an enhanced algorithm and the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform making these devices way better than the previous models.

The first camera samples from Meizu 16 have just been published and they show a stunning photo quality. When light conditions are good, the detail and the sharpness of the photo are very impressive, while in a dark environment the phone still managed to capture a detailed shot with no digital noise. The 4th photo is also showing the potentialities of the fifth-generation beauty algorithm based on artificial intelligence, which can also recognize people’s age, gender, skin quality and more to adjust the photos consequently in order to realize the most beautiful selfies.

Meizu 16 and 16 Plus have a dual camera setup on their rear side. It is composed of a Sony IMX380 sensor and a Sony IMX350. The first has a resolution of 12 MP, a f/1.8 aperture and OIS, with a pixel size of 1.55 um. The secondary sensor is a telephoto lens with a resolution of 20 MP and a f/2.6 aperture, with a pixel size of 1.0 um. Under the cameras, there is a laser autofocus mechanism with a ring flash around which is composed of 6 LEDs. The selfie camera is a single snapper with a 20 MP resolution and a f/2.0 aperture.

What do you think about the above camera samples? Will this phone be able to compete with the top camera phones of 2018 such as Huawei P20 Pro?

The known hi-tech portal WinFuture.de in has published some official images highlighting the new features of the S Pen which will be included in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9. This will allow the user to remotely control the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 without having the pen stick to the phablet. Thanks to a dedicated button, it will be possible to shoot a photo remotely, control presentations or even third-party apps. It will also be possible to customize the S Pen key to do anything you want. According to the leak, the pen will have a finer tip and it will support 4096 pressure levels, that is the highest amount of pressure levels ever implemented on a mobile device. So, it will be possible to draw or handwriting with an extreme accuracy, similarly to paper.

Besides the details about the S Pen, the images confirm that the Note 9 will have an “Intelligent Camera” making it able to recognize scenes and adjust the colors, white balance and contrast. It will be even able to detect blink and bursts. Further, just like the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, the Galaxy Note 9 can be connected to an external monitor to enable DeX without a dock, just by using a cable. Obviously, the DeX dock remains more comfortable as it allows to connect external peripherals such as mouse and keyboards, it can charge the device and can even be used as a touchpad. At last, the images confirm the variable aperture of the camera just like the S9 line-up.

Meizu 16 Hands On: Beauty is in Symmetry

With the number of flagships flooding the market these days, it’s very hard for any particular smartphone to stand out of the crowd. Things get even worse when you are a small time company, especially in the premium segment where Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO have some really compelling options. Still, there are a few smartphones that do stand out because of its design and features and the Meizu 16 series can definitely be tagged as one of such devices. The phone offers tremendous value for money, starting under $400 in China, even beating the Xiaomi Mi 8 and OnePlus 6 in its pricing. So, let’s move on to the Meizu 16 hands on.

Meizu 16 HAnds on 001

In this age where notches are taking over the smartphone market, its very refreshing to see a different design. Yes, I know there are notch-less options like the Vivo Nex and the OPPO Find X, but they do feature mechanical pop up cameras that may not be everyone’s cup of tea due to a number of reasons. Also, some users prefer a little bit of bezel around their smartphone and the Meizu 16 could be a perfect blend of bezel and screen. I say this because the Meizu 16 takes the screen to body ratio to up to 91.18%, and that’s almost the same as the full screen Vivo Nex!

Another important revelation from this Meizu 16 hands was its light weight feel. The phone is super light and as compared to competitors like the OnePlus 6, OPPO Find X and even the Xiaomi Mi 8, the Meizu 16 comes in as a significantly lightweight option weighing just 152 grams. Its quite thin as well, measuring just 7.3mm in thickness.

Meizu 16 hands on bezels

So how did Meizu limit its bezels to such a level? The company revealed that it spent millions of dollars squeezing in all the components like camera, earpiece and sensors on the thin top bezel by re-customizing its display packaging technology. The end result is a super thin bezel smartphone that comes with a very high screen to body ratio, without sacrificing on durability by adding any mechanical parts. It’s the perfect solution if you don’t mind the small bezels on the top and the bottom.

meizu 16 hands on black reflection

Coming to the body, the phone is essentially made of glass on both the sides, with the back getting a special 7 layer coating that makes the texture very similar to ceramic. The back isn’t as reflective as the Mirror Black edition of the OnePlus 6, but as you can see in the image, it’s quite glossy.

Meizu 16 colors hands on 01

The back is curved making it comfortable to grip and the 6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display is compact yet large enough to satisfy your entertainment needs. The buttons are on the right while the SIM slot is on the left. The top is clean save for a microphone opening, while at the bottom you have a USB Type-C port, speakers, and a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack. The back features a dual camera setup with ring flash just below it. Apart from these, the overall design of the Meizu 16 is simple yet elegant, especially with an in-display fingerprint scanner neatly tucked under the AMOLED screen.

You can check out more Meizu 16 hands on pictures down below. Let me know your thoughts on the design of the new handset.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 670: a less powerful Snapdragon 710

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 670: a less powerful Snapdragon 710

Before the Snapdragon 700 series was announced, the Snapdragon 670 was the chipset we looked forward to. However, there were reports Qualcomm decided to launch it as the Snapdragon 710. It turns out those reports were wrong as Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 670 chipset.

Snapdragon 670

The Snapdragon 670 is closer to the Snapdragon 710 in terms of specs which explains why there were reports it was relaunched as the SDM710. Like the Snapdragon 710, the Snapdragon 670 is a 10nm chipset. It even has the same Kryo 360 cores (eight) as the 710 but is clocked at 2.0GHz.

The Snapdragon 670 has an Adreno 615 GPU which should be less powerful than the SD710’s Adreno 616 GPU. It also supports FHD+ max resolution unlike the 710 which supports QHD+ maximum resolution. However, it has the same Hexagon 685 DSP and Spectra 250 ISP as the SD710. The SD670 supports up to a 25MP single camera and 16MP dual cameras.

Qualcomm has also swapped the X15 LTE modem of the SD710 for a slower X12 LTE modem. So maximum download speed is 600Mbps and maximum upload speed is 150Mbps. The Snapdragon 670 also supports Dual SIM Dual VoLTE (DSDV) and Quick Charge 4+ and comes with a multi-core AI engine that is said to be 1.8x better than that of the previous generation.

To sum it up, the Snapdragon 670 is just a slightly less-powerful Snapdragon 710. It has a lower clocked CPU, a slightly less-powerful GPU, and a slower modem.

Mijia launches Hey+ Smartband with AMOLED display for ¥229 (~$34)

Xiaomi’s Mi Band 3 was announced back in May and has sold more than a million units since it went on sale. However, it appears the Mi Band 3 is up for some serious competition. There is a new smartband called the Hey+ and it is made by one of the companies under Xiaomi’s Mijia platform.

Hey+ smartband

The design of the Hey+ Smartband is similar to that of the Mi Band 3. It has a capsule design that fits into a changeable rubber strap. The only physical difference is the position of its charge pins which are underneath the band.

The Hey+ is a much better smartband than the Mi Band 3 with respect to specs. Unlike the Mi Band 3 that has a 0.78-inch 128 x 80 display, the Hey+ comes with a 0.95-inch 240 x 120 colored AMOLED display.

Even with the color display, the Hey+ smartband is said to have a battery life of 18 days. Its battery capacity is 120mAh, same as that of the Mi Band 3.

The Hey+ smartband has NFC by default and supports payments and bus cards. The smartband records calories and steps taken and also tracks activities like swimming, cycling, running, and sleeping. It also has a sedentary reminder and will notify you of calls and display messages.

The Hey+ smartband connects via Bluetooth 4.0+ and works with devices running Android 4.4 and above or iOS 8 and above. There is a dedicated app for the smartband but it also works with the Mijia Home app as it can be used to control Mijia smart home products like the Mi Robot Vacuum cleaner, Mi Air Purifier, and smart cameras.

Meizu Gravity Speaker finally launches for ¥999 (~$146)

The Meizu Gravity Speaker has been in development for over two years now. News of the speaker first surfaced in May 2016 when Meizu listed it on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. Fast forward to December of the same year and Meizu announced the speaker would start shipping in the first quarter of 2017. As you can see, that didn’t happen and Meizu had to refund backers.

Meizu Gravity Speaker official

After more than a year since it was expected to ship, Meizu has finally announced the Gravity Speaker is available for purchase. The announcement was made today alongside the launch of the Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus.

The Meizu Gravity Speaker has a unique design which makes it appear to be floating in mid-air. The trick to the floating illusion is a transparent rectangular glass prism that props the speaker’s main body up in the air. When viewed from a certain angle, it appears as if the speaker itself is floating. That isn’t the only cool thing about the speaker though.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

At the top of the speaker is a triangular glass prism that acts as a heads-up display. The prism is actually placed over the speaker’s main display but thanks to the laws of physics, the light rays from the display passes through the prism and it appears as if the display is in the prism itself. Meizu calls this design “Half Mirror”.

The Meizu Gravity Speaker has two 40mm speakers each with a power output of 10W. There is a Texas Instrument TAS5754M audio chipset inside for audio processing. It also has Dirac HD Sound for improved audio quality.

The Gravity Speaker can play music from your devices via Bluetooth 4.1. It can also connect to the internet via the Gravity app (available only for Android at the moment, iOS app in development) and then stream music from a bunch of platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and TuneIn to name a few. It also has an aux port. Wi-Fi connectivity is limited to 2.4GHz.

Meizu 16 Series features a Beautiful design, in display fingerprint & SD845 under $400!

Meizu has always had a slightly different approach to smartphones but history reveals that being different doesn’t always pay off. Now, the company is back in business, this time in the premium segment with its two new smartphones, the Meizu 16 and the Meizu 16 Plus. For the first time in Meizu’s history, the company is going to use the flagship chipset from Qualcomm in its smartphones — the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. So, Meizu is finally going with the mainstream chipmaker, after years of reliance on competitors like MediaTek and Samsung. This does put the new Meizu 16 and the 16 Plus in the big leagues, right besides smartphones like the Mi 8, Mi Mix 2S, and even the OnePlus 6.

Meizu 16 Design

Hate the notch up front on recent smartphones? You’d be glad to know that the Meizu 16 and the Meizu 16 Plus are both notch-less smartphones. Before you get too excited, note that they don’t have pop up cameras like that of the Vivo Nex or even the OPPO Find X, but the company’s design is very refined to minimise the bezels on all the four sides!

meizu 16 launch (10)

Symmetry has always been a big part of Meizu devices and despite the challenges associated with new age 2018 smartphones, the company has managed to retain a symmetric design on its new Meizu 16 series. But without a pop up camera, does it mean that the Meizu 16 has a thick forehead?

Not really! Meizu explains that the company had to spend millions of dollars to re-customize the screen packaging technology to ensure that all the necessary components on the front are incorporated in the thin forehead on the top. The forehead of a smartphone has always been a crowded spot, with the earpiece, cameras, and sensors all cramming for space up on top. While it’s not as thin as the Vivo Nex’s almost non-existent forehead, the company has managed to bring the screen to body ratio to up to 91.18% with this design.

Meizu 16 hands on (3)

Wait a second! If you remember, the Vivo Nex has a 91.24% screen to body ratio, and comparing this figure to Meizu 16’s 91.18% STB ratio, you’d immediately understand how thin its bezels are!

As I said above, the design is pretty refined and the overall smartphone looks beautiful from up front. The overall body is made out of glass and the back cover comes with a 7 layer coating process that creates a texture very close to ceramic. There are two colors available, White and Black and with the polished glass finish, the Black variant in particular turns out to be quite reflective, similar to OnePlus 6’s Mirror Black edition.

Meizu 16 hands on (1)

Meizu’s obsession with refined design translates into a lighter and thinner smartphone too! So, officially, Meizu is marketing the Meizu 16 as the thinnest in-screen fingerprint smartphone in the world! The Meizu 16 is just 7.3mm thick, way less thinner than OPPO Find X which measures 9.3mm.

If you have been a regular flagship user over the years, you would have realised that smartphones have gradually become heavier. This is another area where Meizu 16 excels as the phone weighs just 152 grams! In comparison, the Vivo Nex weighs 199 grams, Find X weighs 186 grams and even the OnePlus 6 weighs 177 grams. That’s a significant difference in weight and big thumbs up for Meizu in limiting its weight and thickness to such an extent!

Meizu 16 Specs

So far the Meizu 16 is turning out to be quite an impressive smartphone. In the specs department too, the phone doesn’t disappoint. The 16 series comes with the powerful Snapdragon 845 chipset (so no more less powerful chip alternatives for Meizu fans!) that is 1.53 times faster than its predecessor, the Meizu 15 Plus. After seeing the Meizu 16 come to life, it really looks as if the 15 series was just a testing platform for the company in order to perfect the 16 series for the mainstream market.

meizu 16 launch (2)

The phone starts with 6GB of RAM and goes up to 8GB of RAM for higher-end models. The top-end model comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. Meizu 16 comes with a 6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display will its elder sibling will feature a larger 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with the same resolution. In comparison, the 16 features a 3010mAh battery while the 16 Plus has a larger 3640mAh battery inside.

Both the models feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and after months of debugging and optimisation, the recognition speed is 0.25 seconds and the success rate is as much as 99.12%. While an in-screen fingerprint sensor might not be as fast or accurate as a traditional optical sensor, it’s really exciting to see more companies opting for this new technology which will further speed up its optimisation, helping it mature soon.

Another highlight of the Meizu 16 series is the new liquid cooled copper tube cooling system inside. This will ensure that the phone will stay cool even in the heaviest of gaming scenarios, ensuring you get maximum performance from Snapdragon 845 and its supporting hardware. With phones like the Honor Note 10 featuring liquid cooling tech, this move from Meizu is not really surprising.

Other features include dual band Wi-Fi 2×2 MIMO and LTE 4×4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, Qualcomm aptX support and Sony LDAC for the best wireless music experience.

Meizu 16 Cameras

The Meizu 16 series features a large 20MP sensor up front with ArcSoft’s beauty algorithms. You also get special features on the front camera such as bokeh mode.

The rear dual camera setup is the same as the Meizu 15 Plus, so you get a 12MP IMX 380 sensor paired with a 20MP IMX350 sensor. Additional features include four axis OIS, and 1/4s shutter speed. This setup paired with the advanced Spectra 280 ISP on the SD845 should ensure high quality photos from the phone. Further, like all other flagship phones of 2018, Meizu 16 also relies on AI to improve its photography. The phone features a solid auto HDR mode and scene recognition that promises vibrant colors on your landscape photos.

Meizu 16 Software

The new Meizu 16 series comes with the latest Flyme 7 UI based on Android Oreo out of the box. The company is using OneMind AI to create a new app preloading technology that promises to improve start up speed by up to 36%. The phone also features Meizu’s SuperSwipe technology that is said to improve UI fluency by up to 67% by optimising the CPU’s multi-core algorithms.

In order to give you the best gaming experience, Meizu has also set up a joint lab with top gaming publishers in China like Tencent and NetEase to ensure games are optimised for its new devices. Considering liquid cooling and hardware on board, Meizu 16 should run most high-end games without a sweat!

mBack has always been an important part of Meizu smartphones and the new Meizu 16 series comes with the improved Super mBack 2.0. The new version replaces the small circle in favour of a small horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen. This definitely reminds us of Android Pie’s navigation button but Meizu adds that it accepts the standard Super mBack gestures seen on its previous devices.

Google Pixel 3 XL Master Lu listing has leaked its key specifications

Google is expected to debut Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones at the beginning of October. The design of these phones is no secret as recent reports have claimed that the Pixel 3 will be sporting an 18:9 display whereas the Pixel 3 XL would be arriving with a notched screen. Today, the Pixel 3 XL has surfaced on Master Lu, a benchmarking platform from China to reveal some of its key specifications.

On Master Lu, the Google Pixel 3 XL has recorded an impressive score of 212,778. The Master Lu listing has revealed that the smartphone features Snapdragon 845 SoC and 4 GB of RAM. Even the Geekbench listing of the Pixel 3 XL smartphone had revealed that it is equipped with the same amount of RAM.

Some of the flagship phones that have launched in the recent past such as OnePlus 6 include 8 GB of RAM. Also, most of other flagship phones have 6 GB of RAM. Hence, Pixel 3 XL with 4 GB appears weaker than the flagship smartphones from rivaling brands. Probably, there could be a higher variant of Pixel with 6 GB of RAM.

The Master Lu listing of the Pixel 3 XL has further revealed that it supports a screen resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels. It means the phone will offer an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 like the notch-less displays found on Samsung Galaxy phones. However, renders of the Pixel 3 XL that have surfaced in the recent past have revealed that it will be equipped with a notched screen. Hence, it appears that the display resolution mentioned on Master Lu suggests that it may not have taken its notch into consideration.

Google Pixel 3 XL Master Lu Listing

Master Lu has not revealed other information such as battery capacity and storage size of Pixel 3 XL. Recent reports including the case renders of the smartphone have revealed that it will be featuring a single rear camera. The Pixel 2 XL that featured a single camera was able to score 98 points on Dx0Mark. The Pixel 3 XL is expected to deliver stellar photography experience, but it won’t be featuring dual rear cameras like its rivals.

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to support two-tone design like their predecessor models. It is speculated that the presence of the glass portion on Pixel 3 XL duo will allow them to support wireless charging. Also, the smartphone will deliver an improved Active Edge experience. Both the smartphones are expected to feature dual front-facing cameras and dual speakers.
