Android 7.1.2 Nougat Update Causes Pixel and Nexus Fingerprint Failure

Lately Google has been having to deal with buggy updates. The latest in the string of Google fails is the Android 7.1.2 update rolling out to Pixel and eligible Nexus phones.

Reports coming from those who have gotten the update say their fingerprint scanners have stopped working. Even deleting already registered ones and trying to register a new one doesn’t fix the problem neither does a factory reset of the phone. Surprisingly, gesture controls still work.

As at this moment, there is no fix yet and Google has not responded to the issue too. If you are yet to update your device, it is best you leave it for now until a fix is available. The affected devices are the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P.

New Samsung SM-G888N0 Phone Gets WiFi Certification: Is it the Galaxy S8 Sport or Galaxy X?

A new Samsung phone has been spotted on the website of the WiFi Alliance after getting certified. The phone’s model number is listed as SM-G888N0 but we are unsure what device it is.

The model number is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport (SM-G880) which was released last year. For those who don’t know, the Sport series is a separate line aimed at fitness enthusiasts. Unlike the original flagship, the Sport has physical buttons instead of capacitive ones and a bunch of fitness related apps and hardware. It also has a rubberized body. The Galaxy Sport series are usually exclusive to Sprint and are different from the rugged “Active Series”.

Samsung SM-G888N0

Since this new device is almost identical in terms of the model number to the S7 Sport, some say it may be the Galaxy S8 Sport. However, the “N0” at the end signifies it is destined for the Korean market. That singular difference gives rise to a second opinion.

Like I mentioned above, the Sport is a Sprint exclusive device so if this phone is for the Korean market, it is not the Galaxy S8 Sport. Plus the model number for the Galaxy S8 Sport should probably be SM-G890 based on the fact that the Galaxy S5 Sport is SM-G860 and the S7 Sport is SM-G880. There was no Sport version for the Galaxy S6 or it would have had the SM-G870 model number.

MIUI Weather App New Update Adds Two Hour Rainfall Prediction Feature

One of the cool system apps that Xiaomi’s MIUI operating system comes with is the Weather app which is able to forecast the weather. The app has now gotten an update that makes it even more effective. The new feature brings a 2-hour precipitation function which is said to be the first mobile phone app with short-term precipitation forecasting.

The new MIUI Weather app feature is also known as short-term precipitation forecast and it functions by analysing the weather radar map and can predict the rainfall trend in the next 2 hours with an error range of 5 minutes.  The new Mi Weather app can also predict the rainfall time to the minute level and the location accurate to the street level with up to 83% accuracy rate.

The Weather app home page pops up a notification if the short-term precipitation forecast detects that it might rain within the next two hours. In that way, travels and outdoor activities can be planned. The feature is not very accurate, though, as sometimes the app can be wrong. In such situations, users can send feedback to help Xiaomi collate, classify and correct errors using the large data algorithm from the feedbacks.

Leaked Xiaomi Mi 6 Case Confirms Previous Design

A new leak featuring the protective case of the Mi 6 has appeared online and it seems to confirm the previously leaked design of the Mi 6. One notable feature of the case is the location of the rear camera flash. We are torn between the rear flash sitting on the left or the right of the dual cameras. We have seen leaked images of both design but the latest leaked image of the Mi 6 aligns with this one.

However, a good number of Mi 6 leaked images shows the rear camera will be located on the left side of the dual cameras including the latest one. One thing is sure though, the Mi 6 will come with a dual camera setup. Further, the device will come with wireless charging feature and the casing comes with an opening for that. The 3.5mm audio port is also missing from the leaked casing but the USB Type-C port is featured.

We would have easily accepted this as the likely design of the Mi 6 if not that it is coming from @kjuma who has become quite notorious for fake leaks. That doesn’t rule out the fact that the leaskster still comes out with some authentic leaks sometimes. Have a look at two more of the leaked images down below.

In fact, Xiaomi claims that the tablet can playback videos for up to 12 hours on a single charge. We’ll confirm that soon. Inside, you have the less popular MTK MT8176 hexa-core processor sporting 2 x Cortex A72 cores + 4 x Cortex A53 cores inside. This along with 4GB of RAM provides pretty decent performance, but we’ll focus on the performance of the tablet in the full review coming soon.

You get 64GB ROM inside with no MicroSD expansion — a shame since the original one had this feature. Further, the tablet starts at $220 in China, but as usual, the demand for the tab is quite high at the moment, giving its third party reseller pricing a boost. At present, you can get hold of the Mi Pad 3 on giztop for $249.99.

Microsoft Surface CloudBook Running on Snapdragon 835 to Launch on May 2?

Microsoft will be holding a launch event on May 2 at New York City. Since the Redmond-based tech giant has not revealed the products it will be unveiling, the rumor mill is speculating that it may showcase a Surface Book 2 or Surface Pro 5 at the upcoming spring event. However, since the hashtag of the event is #MicrosoftEDU, it is evident that the company would be showcasing an educational product that is probably based on Windows 10 Cloud project. New speculations hint that Microsoft may announce a cloud technology driven Surface device that is dubbed as Surface CloudBook.

The Windows Cloud, a new edition of Windows 10 could be an attempt from Microsoft to rival with Google’s Chromebooks. The Windows Cloud will let users to install both Win32 and UWP apps from the Windows Store. It is also equipped with Office apps. Compared to Windows 10 Home and Pro, the Windows Cloud is expected to be available with a cheaper pricing. The Windows Cloud and the rumored CloudBook are pegged debut at the oncoming launch event.

Microsoft Surface

The Redmond giant has recently added a collection of educational apps with an ID of “cloudbook” which also hints that Microsoft may soon unleash a new device named Cloudbook. Mary Jo Foley who is known for closely following the latest updates on Microsoft had also predicted that it may announce a Cloud Book device coming this spring. A very related tweet has also been released by well-known leakster, The Walking Cat.

The education-based low-priced CloudBook may be running on an ARM processor as Microsoft has stated that the full version of Windows 10 is capable of running on an ARM architecture chip. Hence, speculations are hinting that the Snapdragon 835 chipset is likely to power the rumored Microsoft Cloud Book which will make it the first ARM driven Windows 10 machine.

Devices running on ARM-based chips can not only come with cheaper pricing but also can last longer to make it suitable for use in environments like classroom. Its users will be able to able to access web through cellular data and Wi-Fi. Other speculations suggest that Microsoft may unveil a normal Surface laptop than announcing a Cloud Book.

Microsoft did best to keep the Surface Book and Surface Studio under the wraps before they were officially unveiled. So, Microsoft fans will have to wait until May 2 as it seems to be doing a good job in preventing the people from knowing on what’s going to be unveiled at the upcoming event. The event will be held at 9:30 AM ET.

Samsung’s reputation has taken a hit since the news about explosions of Galaxy Note 7 phones started surfacing soon after its launch in August 2016. After recalling the phablet twice, Samsung had to discontinue the sales of the phablet completely by October 2016.

In January this year, Samsung’s heir Lee Jae-Yong was accused of bribery, embezzlement, and perjury and after a month of investigation, the 23-year-old acting vice chairman of Samsung Group was arrested in February. The South Korean company is speculated to have provided millions of dollars as bribe and favors to former South Korean President Park Geun-Hye who has been recently impeached.

Reports suggest that if Lee Jae-yong is found guilty, he may get up to life in imprisonment. Following his arrest, top Samsung Group executives such as Vice Chairman Choi Gee-sung and President Chang Choong-gi have offered to resign in the face of corruption and power abuse scandal.

With the launch of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones that are scheduled to ship from April 21 and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, the South Korean company is looking forward to rebuilding its reputation. However, the Samsung Group has a bigger task to deal with which involves reinstating its image after the recent corruption scandal.

New Nokia 9 Concept Render With Bezel-less Design, Dual-Lens Camera Surfaces

At a time talks of a Nokia 9 in the works are getting heated, a new concept design for the Nokia 9 designed by PhoneDesigner has appeared online. The render isn’t likely going to be the final one for the expected device but you never can tell anyway.

Nokia 9

The major highlights of the design include the bezel-less design it features up front. The display curves at the two sides, eliminating the side bezels. Also, the device seems to feature a high screen-to-body ratio. There is also no physical home button at the front but the device uses onscreen buttons.

Nokia 9

Another interesting feature on the render is the dual-lens camera at the rear. The dual cameras are aligned in a vertical plane and the LED flash is located under the second camera, still in the same plane. This just looks so real with the Nokia logo engraved under the camera setup. Unfortunately, it isn’t real.

There are equally two front speakers on the device. The Nokia 9 is rumoured as coming in the third quarter of this year and is expected to sport a Snapdragon 835 processor, among other features.

Xiaomi Mi Band 2 Mi 6 Commemorative Edition Unveiled

Xiaomi has unveiled a new Mi Band 2 which is meant to commemorate the launch of the Mi 6 flagship. As you know, this year marks 7 years of Xiaomi’s existence but that may not be the only reason why the Mi 6 launch is being made to look so special. We expect the Mi 6 to come with a number of super stunning features other than packing a Snapdragon 835 chip. The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 Mi 6 Commemorative Edition was announced on Xiaomi’s Mi Band 2 official Weibo account today.

Xiaomi Mi Band 2 Mi 6 Commemorative Edition

The new Xiaomi Mi Band 2 Mi 6 Commemorative Edition comes with the same design as the regular Mi Band 2 but the number “6” is engraved on the touchpad. Apart from that, the words “Mi 6 Memorial” is printed on a part of the rubber straps. These are the two differences on the new band. It is believed the features are the same with the regular Mi Band 2.

Xiaomi Mi 6 Leaked Photos Reveal USB Type-C, Curved Back But No 3.5mm Headphone Jack

Xiaomi has started teasing the features of its upcoming Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship smartphone. The first teaser hinted the arrival of dual rear cameras on the Mi 6 and the following teaser has suggested that it may arrive with curved design at all four sides at the front and rear. It is also rumored that the Xiaomi Mi 6 would be coming with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner that will be embedded under the front glass. It is also said to function as a Home button. Weibo has now revealed several leaked photos of the Xiaomi Mi 6 which confirm all the aforementioned teasers and leaked information.

Xiaomi Mi 6 leaked photos

It can be clearly seen from the above image that the Xiaomi Mi 6 has a larger Home button compared to its predecessor. Rumors have it that does not press down. However, it is speculated to be equipped with a linear motor to deliver vibrational feedback.

The body of the Xiaomi Mi 6 appears to be made of ceramic to boast premium design. If you remember, the recent teaser suggested that the Mi 6 will have four curved design. Now, this could mean two things: curved display + curved back design or four curved design at the back (kind of like Honor Magic which had an eight curved design). Despite reports saying that the Mi 6’s display was going to be flat, this new teaser from the company kind of rekindled dual curved display rumors.

But seeing these renders and the fact that they are in line with previous leaks, it’s possible that Xiaomi’s teaser was talking about the four curved design at the back. Fresh information also suggests that the Xiaomi Mi 6 will be coming with IP67 certified dust and water resistant body.

Xiaomi Mi 6’s topside seems to feature an IR blaster. The right side of the phone features volume controllers and power button. The back panel is equipped with dual rear cameras coupled with dual LED flash. The bottom side of the phone features a USB Type-C port that separates the two external speakers. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the device.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 appears to be aesthetically beautiful in these leaked shots. It is a well-known fact that the phone will be powered by Snapdragon 835. Recently, it was spotted on Geekbench with stellar performance scores.

With the arrival of features like IP67 rated body and iris scanner, it seems that the phone will be selling with a higher price tag. Leaked details have revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 6’s base model featuring 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage would be available for 2,199 Yuan ($319) whereas the starting price of Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus featuring 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage would be priced at 2,699 Yuan ($392).

Xiaomi Mi 6 Second Teaser Points at Four Curved Body Design

Five days before the Mi 6 is launched, Xiaomi has continued its daily teasers of the features that would be on the device. The video teasers would likely be four episodes in total and the first which was released yesterday was the dual camera setup expected on the Mi 6. Now, the second video teases the Mi 6 as coming with a body design curved at four sides.

xiaomi mi 6 teaser

Xiaomi’s Mi 6 is expected to come with a curved design both at the front and the back. The curvature is likely going to be at the two sides on the front, and also at the two sides at the back making a total of four curves. From leaked images of the rear view of the Xiaomi flagship, we had seen the curved body on the back but we are yet to see a real image that goes beyond this and show the front view with its curvature. Earlier rumours had tipped the Mi 6 as coming with a flat screen but here is a new twist.

OnePlus 5 Rumors: Leaked Case Reveals Arrival of Dual Rear Camera Feature

Earlier today, we reported that the upcoming OnePlus flagship smartphone may carry a model number of A5000 as it has been spotted on the website of the Chinese State Radio Regulation Committee (SRRC). Now, some leaked images of the alleged OnePlus 5 case have appeared to reveal that the flagship phone may come with dual rear cameras.

Sources from China have claimed that the OnePlus 5 will indeed arrive with a dual rear camera setup and what we see here are the first images of its protective case. However, we advise our readers to take this rumor with a pinch of salt because the alleged OnePlus 5 case appears quite generic and there is no information available yet on the design of the OnePlus 5 smartphone.

Leading Chinese smartphone brands like Huawei, Vivo, and LeEco are now selling phones with dual rear cameras. Xiaomi too is expected to introduce dual rear camera on Xiaomi Mi 6. Having a twin rear camera feature would certainly allow the OnePlus to rival these brands in the camera department.

The rumor mill has revealed that OnePlus may skip OnePlus 4 moniker for its upcoming flagship as the number 4 is a bad omen in the home country. Hence, the next flagship phone may launch as OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones have respective model numbers of A3000 and A3010. Since the A5000 model number has now been spotted, it seems that there won’t be any OnePlus 4 as the company may launch its next flagship as OnePlus 5.

The rumor mill has revealed that the OnePlus 5 would be coming with a 5.5-inch screen with reduced bezels. It could be the first OnePlus smartphone to come with support for quad HD resolution. The Snapdragon 835 is expected to give power to the OnePlus 5 along with a mammoth 8 GB RAM. It will be running on Android Nougat OS customized with OxygenOS UI from OnePlus

The OnePlus 3T is priced at $439 for 64 GB model and $479 for 128 GB model. Speculations surrounding OnePlus 5 hint that it may be priced under $500. The smartphone is pegged to debut in June or July this year.

All Metal HTC One X10 Official in Russia: A Better Alternative to The U Play?

HTC has a new phone, the HTC One X10 and its release could be termed as a silent one. News of the device first surfaced on Tuesday when an official poster was leaked. Now the device is live on HTC’s Russian website.

HTC One X10

HTC One X10 Specs

The leaked poster teased one major feature, a large battery and HTC delivers on that. The HTC One X10 packs a 4000mAh battery under its all-metal back. The battery is said to last almost 2 days on a single charge.

The rest of the specs on the HTC One X10 are not outstanding. We have seen them in phones launched as far back as early 2016. There is a 5.5-inch FHD display with Corning Gorilla Glass. You get 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage which can be expanded via a MicroSD slot that accepts up to 2TB cards.

The HTC One X10 is powered by the same Helio P10 processor in the HTC U Play. The P10 is old and its successor, the Helio P20 was announced at last year’s CES but HTC is still putting the Helio P10 in phones released in 2017.

There is a f/2.0 16MP rear camera on the X10 with a pixel size of  1 μm. The rear camera has a LED flash flanking it on the right and there is a fingerprint scanner below it. HTC says the rear camera will perform well under low-light. For the front camera, there is an 8MP 86° wide-angle sensor, that allows you fit all your friends in one frame.

Someone Almost Convinced Us OnePlus 3 Was Running iOS (Pictures)

Apple’s iOS isn’t an open source software like Google’s Android OS and is specifically designed to run on Apple iPhones. Thus, we were very much surprised, almost falling for it, when some images of the OnePlus 3 running iOS was leaked online.

OnePlus 3

The images were spotted online and clearly, the interface is that of Apple’s iOS 10.1 with its cool wallpapers and crisp clear home screen. The device was said to run on iOS 10. However, on closer scrutiny, we noticed that despite the charger being plugged in, the battery icon was not indicating a charging device. This could be an indication that we are looking at a screenshot of iOS 10’s interface. In case you are not convinced this a screenshot, the dude later admitted it is.oneplus 3 ios 10

Presently, it is difficult having the iOS running successfully on an Android phone. No matter how close the smartphone may look to an iPhone, there are chances of seeing random errors, system crash and missing features because of unmatched configuration of APIs within the apps.

OnePlus 5 “A5000” Seen Getting Chinese Radio Certification

The first thing we learnt about the next flagship from OnePlus was the name. You might be wondering why that’s important. It is because virtually everyone expected the next phone to be named OnePlus 4, turns out we were wrong. Instead, it will be called the OnePlus 5. The reason is because the number 4 is considered unlucky in China. What about Xiaomi’s Redmi 4 series, Redmi Note 4 series and the Mi 4 series? Maybe Xiaomi doesn’t believe in superstitions.

Following the revelation of the new name albeit unofficially, there have been lots of renders and leaks regarding the design and specs of the device. However, today we have confirmation of the name.

OnePlus 5 A5000

A device listed as the OnePlus A5000 was seen on the website of the Chinese State Radio Regulation Committee (SRRC). A5000 is the model number for the device just as A3000 and A3010 is for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T respectively. This is the first official proof that confirms it will be called the OnePlus 5.

Meizu E2 Coming With a New Camera / Ring Flash Design?

Meizu announced recently that it would be launching a new smartphone on April 26, its second smartphone product for the year after the M5s. In a rather strange manner, we know little or nothing about the upcoming smartphone said to be the Meizu E2.

While we are yet to piece together the likely specs of the E2, a fresh tip has appeared which suggests that the Meizu E2 may not come with the same hardware features as found on other Meizu smartphones. The E2 is likely a mid-budget smartphone so, we really don’t expect much on the smartphone but seems Meizu has other plans.

The surprise package may likely be on the design features of the Meizu smartphone. According to a Weibo post by Meizu teasing the launch event, the post asked readers which feature they think would not feature on the smartphone. Of course, whatever would be removed would likely be an external feature. It is impossible to remove hardware like the camera. Also, if not that Meizu’ mBack home button is Meizu’s pride, we’d have guessed perhaps the physical home button is giving way to a virtual one. Again, this is a budget smartphone and so such sophistication isn’t expected.

Rumours are rife that the change may likely be on the camera where the flash might not be the usual flash located under the camera. It may also not be the ring flash which Meizu featured on the Pro 6, Pro 6S and Pro 6 Plus recently. Instead, the device is suspected to come with a newly develop camera/flash system where the flash is integrated into the camera unlike that on the Pro 6 where the camera and ring flash are separate. Meizu recently patented that and we saw the sketches from the patent document. Also, a Meizu smartphone with this setup was leaked recently on Weibo but we are not so sure about this.

Aside from this, we can’t say what else Meizu would likely be taking off the E2. We’ll definitely get to find out when the device is launched on April 26.

LeEco Le Pro 3 AI Edition Promotional Images Features OnePlus 3T Wallpaper

LeEco unveiled the Le Pro 3 AI Edition on Tuesday. The new flagship device is not much different from last year’s Le Pro 3 save for the LeLe AI Assistant, dual rear cameras, and the processor.

Yesterday promotional images of the black Le Pro 3 AI Edition were posted on Weibo by CEO Jia Yueting. The phone actually looks pretty nice but we couldn’t help but notice that the wallpaper on it is the same as that of the OnePlus 3T. Yes, that molten lava picture is actually the default wallpaper for the Midnight Black OP3T.

Le Pro 3 AI Edition

Seeing the same image on the Le Pro 3 leaves us wondering if the OnePlus CEO didn’t see this gaffe. We can’t deny it, the wallpaper definitely looks good on a black phone but LeEco could have hired someone to make one specifically for them instead of “borrowing” from OnePlus.

Insider Reveals Xiaomi Mi 6 Might Have A Home Key Problem

If you are counting down to the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 6, then you we still havel 6 days to go. Xiaomi’s new flagship will bring a number of new features one of which is the new Snapdragon 835 processor. However, the focus of this post is on the home button which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Analyst, Sun Changxu yesterday revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 6 will feature an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner similar to that of the Huawei P10 or rather the Xiaomi Mi 5s. This scanner is embedded under the front glass and doesn’t need to have a hole cut into the phone, although manufacturers create a groove on the phone to allow users know where the scanner is.

Since the scanner also doubles as a home button and it doesn’t press down, a linear motor is needed to provide vibrational feedback. This is the same technology used in the iPhone 7.

Indian Smartphone Market: Chinese Brands Benefit in Short Term, Apple Gains in The Long Term

A survey carried out by Counterpoint Research revealed that two out of three mobile phone users in India plans to change their phone in the next one year. The desire to upgrade to a new smartphone stems from wanting a device with 4G capabilities. The survey also revealed that one in every three persons wants a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner and a better front facing camera.

Smartphone

A research director at the firm, Neil Shah says that Chinese brands that offer phones which meet these standards in the sub-$200 category will benefit. However, bigger brands like Apple will have to wait a bit longer before they can benefit, probably post-2018. The reason is because by then, the user base would have matured, 4G network will be everywhere and people will want to upgrade to a better device.

“In the longer term you will have a bigger user base who will want to upgrade to a better phone. Apple will benefit post-2018 with a maturing user base and the 4G network will be available everywhere. People will be using more services. In the next two years it would be a good idea for Apple to roll out their retail footprint and invest in manufacturing.”

Apple CEO,Tim Cook said earlier this year that the company had an “all-time record revenue results” in India last year. The American company is planning to have an assembly plant in India which should help reduce the cost of their devices. The cheapest iPhone at the moment is the iPhone SE and it sells for Rs 27,000 ($420.50). That is higher than the cost of the Xiaomi Mi 5 which sells for Rs 22,999.
