<p>Major chip making giants like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nvidia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nvidia</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Qualcomm</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MediaTek</a>, and others are apparently turning to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC </a>for the fabrication of its next generation of high end chipsets. These chips will be based on TSMC&#8217;s advanced 3nm process.</p>

<h2>Qualcomm &amp; MediaTek opt for TSMC, not Samsung</h2>

<p>For those unaware, Qualcomm was initially rumored to sourced the 3nm chips from both Samsung and TSMC. These foundries would be used for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC. But now, a new report from <a href="https://www.ctee.com.tw/news/20231121700061-430501" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">China Times</a> claims that chip giants MediaTek and Qualcomm are turning to TSMC for its second generation 3nm process (N3E). This will be used to fabricate the Dimensity 9400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1014" height="556" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716.png?x10805" alt="TSMC" class="wp-image-574942" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716.png 1014w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716-300x164.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716-768x421.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716-696x382.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Screenshot-2023-10-13-212716-766x420.png 766w" sizes="(max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px" /></figure></div>

<p>Notably, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/09/01/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple is another major client of TSMC </a>and its 3nm process line for its next gen M series and A series chipsets. As of right now, the company is relying on TSMC&#8217;s first gen 3nm process (N3B) for its A17 Pro processor, which powers the iPhone 15 Pro series. the report adds that Samsung Foundry has yet to receive major clients for its 3nm chip fabrication technology. </p>

<p>Typically, brands like Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, and Nvidia also place orders with Samsung Foundry to make their chipset. Although, these are not always flagship processors. Since the South Korean company began offering advanced 3nm process tech, it was hoping to have some brands place orders with its foundry. But this shift might take longer than expected.</p>

<p>Despite being one of the world&#8217;s largest technology companies, Apple is still dependent on outside production. Yes, the company has perhaps the best engineering team in the world and its R&amp;D department is unrivaled, but these teams are more focused on the design of the product. Therefore, the American tech giant often collaborates with other manufacturers such as Foxconn, TSMC, Samsung, and BOE on various issues. Now, there is a rumor going around that Apple plans to purchase the entire supply of 3nm chips from TSMC. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>TSMC&#8217;s 3nm Chips: The Most Advanced Chips in the World, and Apple Wants Them All</strong></h2>

<p>The collaboration between Apple and TSMC continues to grow stronger. According to recent reports, the two companies have signed a major agreement for 3nm chips that will be used in both the A17 Bionic, which will power the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models, and the M3 processors that will be the heart of the next generation of MacBooks. Apple has already purchased a large portion of the 3nm chips that will be produced in 2023. Some sources say this purchase was based on 90%. Now, this figure has reached 100%.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-563451" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/apple-tsmc-3nm-chip-deal.jpeg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The rumor is based on a report from DigiTimes, which cited industry sources. The report said that Apple has already booked all of TSMC&#8217;s 3nm capacity for 2023. If the rumor is true, it would be a major coup for Apple. It would give the company a significant advantage over its rivals in the race to develop the most powerful and efficient chips. It would also allow Apple to maintain its leadership in the global smartphone market.</p>

<p>TSMC&#8217;s 3nm chips offer a number of advantages over its predecessors, including increased transistor density, reduced power consumption, improved performance, and support for new features. These advantages make 3nm chips a promising technology for a wide range of applications, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, servers, and even self-driving cars.</p>

<p>The 3nm process is the next big step in smartphone chip technology. It is expected to offer significant improvements in performance and power efficiency over the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/09/tsmc-announces-a-new-4nm-process-an-enhanced-version-of-the-5nm-process/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">current 4nm process</a>. This could lead to longer battery life and faster performance in upcoming products, such as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15</a> and Galaxy S24. So, who will be the first manufacturer to use this technology and have an overwhelming advantage over its competitors? Apple is reportedly hoarding 90% of TSMC&#8217;s 3nm capacity this year. This could give it a significant advantage over its competitors. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>What Does Apple&#8217;s 3nm Chip Hoarding Mean for Its Competitors?</strong></h2>

<p>Apple is reportedly hoarding 90% of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC</a>&#8216;s 3nm capacity this year, according to a new report from Taiwan. This means that the iPhone maker will have first dibs on the most advanced chip manufacturing process available, which could give it a significant advantage over its competitors. The 3nm process is expected to offer significant improvements in performance and power efficiency over the current 4nm process. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="Apple 3nm chips" class="wp-image-537441" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-hoards-90-of-tsmc-3nm-capacity.jpeg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>This could lead to longer battery life and faster performance in Apple&#8217;s upcoming products, such as the iPhone 15 and the M3 MacBook Air. The report also claims that Apple has been placing orders for 3nm chips since 2020, which suggests that the company is planning for the long term. This could mean that Apple is preparing to launch a new product category, such as a self-driving car, that requires the latest and greatest chip technology. </p>

<p>It is unclear what impact Apple&#8217;s hoarding of 3nm capacity will have on its competitors. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/Qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Qualcomm</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/Samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/MediaTek/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MediaTek</a> are all expected to release 3nm chips in the coming years, but they may have to wait until 2024 or 2025 to get their hands on enough chips to meet demand. This could give Apple a significant advantage in the market.</p>

<p>It is also worth noting that TSMC is expected to increase its 3nm capacity in 2024. This could help to alleviate some of the supply constraints that Apple&#8217;s hoarding is causing. However, it is still unclear how much additional capacity TSMC will be able to add, and it is possible that Apple will still be able to secure a significant portion of it.</p>

<p>But this time, Samsung decided to skip the Exynos version of the flagship smartphones, and thus, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-s23">Galaxy S23 series</a> comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC in all regions.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-1024x576.webp?x10805" alt="Samsung Exynos" class="wp-image-523166" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Exynos.webp 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>While it was speculated that the company may be done with the flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chipset">chipset</a> of its own, given the disappointing reasons for the Exynos 2200, it appears that isn&#8217;t the case.</p>

<p>As per the latest information, the South Korean technology giant is working on the Samsung <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-exynos-2500">Exynos 2500 SoC</a>, which will feature a self-made GPU based on AMD&#8217;s technology. However, the specification of the chip remains unknown at this time.</p>

<p>Previously, Samsung was rumored to be working on a custom graphics processor, and this is likely to be the case as the company would take advantage of the license agreement with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a>, which was recently renewed. It remains to be seen if Samsung is looking to ditch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> in the longer run and rely only on its own chips.</p>

<p>Although the development sounds exciting, it will take some time, at least a couple of years, before the Samsung Exynos 2500 SoC becomes official. There&#8217;s a possibility that the chipset may be manufactured using a second-generation 3nm process if everything goes as per the plans and Samsung starts <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3nm production</a> next year.</p>

<p>Over the last few weeks, there has been some buzz surrounding the alleged A17 Bionic performance figures. Unfortunately, it appears that these numbers were fabricated and not genuine. However, the rumour mill has churned out another piece of information, which is Apple may be facing production difficulties with its 3nm chip due to issues with <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/TSMC">TSMC</a>, its most lucrative client. Although Apple is the only customer for TSMC&#8217;s <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3nm</a> chip, Twitter user Revegnus has suggested that the manufacturer is still struggling with production. In an earlier tweet, he shared rumoured benchmark scores for the chipset that will be used exclusively in the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-15-pro/">iPhone 15 Pro</a> lineup. However, he has since retracted these claims following recent developments.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="581" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-523936" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1-768x436.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1-696x395.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/iphone-14-pro-1024x581-1-740x420.jpg 740w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Revegnus has affirmed that TSMC&#8217;s 3nm yield goal has dropped, which could limit the supply of the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/a17-bionic">A17</a> Bionic if these problems are not resolved. This news is surprising, considering that an earlier report had suggested that TSMC was performing significantly better than <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/samsung">Samsung</a>, with an impressive yield rate of 80 percent. There might be a possibility that the A17 Bionic that Apple wanted to produce on the 3nm process was not successful in terms of power consumption and heat generation. As a result, the performance target may have dropped. However, if Apple has encountered an insurmountable obstacle with this chip, it is possible that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/08/apple-macbook-air-m3-chip-wwdc-launch-rumors/">M3</a> SoC meant for future Macs may also face similar setbacks.</p>

<p>In such a case, the tech giant may have to sacrifice performance for the A17 Bionic and M3 chips, focusing instead on energy efficiency. During TSMC&#8217;s official announcement of its 3nm plant, the company&#8217;s chairman did not mention any significant performance gains. Instead, he highlighted that 3nm chips would exhibit up to 35 percent improved power savings at the same speeds, which might be Apple&#8217;s ultimate goal when it comes to imminent chips. However, It is important to note that there are conflicting rumours, so readers should take Revegnus&#8217; tweets with a grain of salt. TSMC is expected to commence mass production shortly after the second half of 2023, and at that time, more information about the estimated performance numbers for the A17 Bionic and M3 will likely be available.</p>

<p>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, popularly known as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc">TSMC</a>, is setting up a new production plan in Arizona, United States at a cost of around $12 billion.</p>

<p>The plant was originally planned to manufacture <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5nm">5nm chips</a> but recently it was revealed that the plant will be making 4nm chips. Now, a new report from Taiwanese media claims that the production of 4nm chips in the Arizona plant could start next year.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-1024x683.jpg?x10805" alt="TSMC" class="wp-image-523049" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2022-03-11-image-13.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to the report from Economic Daily, TSMC&#8217;s new plant in Arizona will start producing 4nm chips from 2024. The report further adds that Qualcomm&#8217;s Global Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chen Ruowen said that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> will be the first customer of TSMC&#8217;s US plant&#8217;s 4nm chips.</p>

<p>It was earlier reported that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a> and NVIDIA were among the companies that urged TSMC to start making 4nm chips in the US. The development comes at a time when companies are now planning to source chips manufactured in the United States. Further, this new plant should also allow a whole host of new companies and jobs to appear in support of the manufacturing facility.</p>

<p>Apart from Qualcomm, Apple, AMD, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nvidia">NVIDIA</a> are also expected to place a large order for the chips manufactured by TSMC in the Arizona facility. In the second phase of the upgrade at the Arizona plant, TSMC will upgrade the facility to produce more advanced <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3nm chips</a>, which is likely to happen around 2026.</p>

<p>We have already covered various reports that hint at the next gen <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/a17-bionic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple A17 Bionic</a> being based on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC</a>&#8216;s cutting edge 3nm process node. But now, a new report has revealed that the company is looking to acquire most of the 3nm process of the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker.</p>

<p>For those unaware, the A17 Bionic is the next gen chipset that will power the iPhone 15 Pro models later this year. It will be based on the 3nm process from TSMC, which would make the iPhone the only smartphone to feature a 3nm based chip this year. TSMC will produce the chips with its advanced N3E process node in the second half of this year. The newer N3E process is cheaper than the previous N3 process, so it would lower the cost for its various clients.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-522694" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/3nm-chip-apple-tsmc.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>In other words, brands like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm would rush to put in their orders in the latest 3nm process node. However, it appears that the Cupertino based giant is looking to acquire most of the new 3nm process for its proprietary chips. The next gen chips based on the N3E will be more power efficient while offer faster clock speeds, with 15 percent better performance with 30 to 30 percent lowered power consumption. </p>

<p>As of right now, Apple is already the largest customer of TSMC, accounting for 25 percent of TSMC&#8217;s annual revenue. A new report from <a href="https://www.ednasia.com/tsmcs-3-nm-progress-report-better-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EDN Asia</a> has revealed that the 3nm chip production has hit the 80 percent yield rate. High yields basically mean than more chips pass quality control and help the company save up on production cost. </p>

<p>The news arrives from a known tech YouTuber Max Tech who spotted the A17 Bionic on the latest GeekBench 6 benchmarking platform. Based on what we know so far, the upcoming A17 Bionic will power devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and will be based on the 3nm process from TSMC. The new cutting edge process would enable the upcoming A17 Bionic SoC to be more energy efficient while also offering improved performance overall.</p>

<p>However, the advanced semiconductor fabrication technology would also mean higher cost of production. So, the Cupertino based giant might raise the cost of the iPhone 15 Pro models. Looking at the benchmark scores, the A17 Bionic managed to achieve a score of 3986 points for its single core test and a 8841 points on the GeekBench 6 multi core tests. This is quite impressive considering this chipset is almost rivaling the performance offered on a MacBook.</p>

</div></figure>

<p>In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro with the A16 Bionic achieved a score of 2504 points and 6314 points on the single core and multi core tests respectively. This implies that the A17 Bionic is offering a near 60 percent boost in performance in single core and a 40 percent multi core performance upgrade over its predecessor. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC </a>has been a major supplier of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple </a>for its proprietary chipsets. And now, the company is apparently planning on having its new 5G model being built on TSMC&#8217;s 3nm process as as well. So here are all the details. </p>

<p>For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant has been placing orders for its chips that power its PCs and mobile devices with the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker for sometime now. TSMC&#8217;s latest advancement in semiconductor manufacturing has allowed it to build chips on 3nm process nodes. The smaller the processor nodes the more powerful and energy efficient are the chips that are built using this process. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1.jpeg?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-521160" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/apple-5g-modem-starting-2023-1-1024x576-1-747x420.jpeg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>So for its next generation of chips, Apple will likely account for a large portion of TSMC&#8217;s 3nm process capacity in 2023. One part of its orders would likely be for its in house 5G modem that is built using the latest semiconductor technology from TSMC. The same process is expected to also power its next gen A series and M series processors. According to a <em><a href="https://ctee.com.tw/news/tech/819156.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Commercial Times</a></em> report, the supply chain sources have revealed that risk production of the Apple 5G modem will begin in the second half of this year. </p>

<p>Risk production is basically the stage where the foundry builds chips and works out any issues to raise the yields. Following this phase, the volume production begins where wafer output usually rises slowly in the first half of next year. In other words, it appears that the iPhone maker will have to rely on Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon 5G modem chips for at least this year.</p>

<p>The tech world is abuzz with the latest news on upcoming smartphone chipsets. The transistor count on chips has been increasing year-over-year, thanks to feature size decreasing due to evolving technology. According to reports, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/14/qualcomm-snapdragon-8-gen-3-chip-could-debut-early/">Snapdragon 8 Gen 3</a> from Qualcomm is expected to perform better than the A16 Bionic in terms of CPU. However, it seems that TSMC&#8217;s 3 nm node has been reserved for Apple&#8217;s next-gen chipset, the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/a17-bionic/">A17 Bionic</a>, giving it a production priority over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/dimensity/">Dimensity </a>9300, which will continue to be manufactured on TSMC&#8217;s 4 nm processes. </p>

<p>In 2022, Qualcomm improved upon the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip by switching to TSMC&#8217;s <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/4nm/">4 nm</a> process for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. As evident from the latest smartphone launches, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-gen-2/">Snapdragon 8 Gen 2</a> has been a huge success. Now, rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will outperform the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/a16-bionic">A16 Bionic</a> in the CPU department. However, it seems Apple will bounce back harder, claiming its lead back with the upcoming A17 Bionic chip this fall.</p>

<p>Reports suggest that TSMC will be responsible for manufacturing the A17 Bionic. This doesn’t come as a surprise at all, since the Taiwanese company has been producing Apple SoCs for quite some time. What&#8217;s interesting, though, is that the A17 Bionic will be built on TSMC&#8217;s <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3 nm</a> process, alongside the next-gen M3 chips. Apple is said to have fully booked <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc">TSMC</a>&#8216;s 3 nm production capacity, leaving no room for Qualcomm and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a>. It will be exciting to see how other chip manufacturers will adjust to his change in this market scenario.</p>

<p>What this means is that the A17 Bionic, which is expected to power the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-15-pro">iPhone 15 Pro</a> models coming this year, will have a generational advantage over Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and MediaTek&#8217;s Dimensity 9300. Qualcomm might stay at the top for now. However, as mentioned previously, when Apple announces the A17 Bionic chip in 2023, Apple will most likely reclaim its position at the top, at least until the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is released at the end of 2024. Even then, the competition will definitely be cutthroat.</p>

<p>Recently, there have been reports that Apple has reduced its order size with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/TSMC/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC</a>. The company is the sole supplier of Apple chips, and the reduction in orders is a reflection of the overall weakness of the global economy. It is important to note that the canceled orders were for chips that would be made using TSMC&#8217;s N7, N5, N4, and even some N3 nodes. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Apple has sharply reduced the size of the order it has with TSMC </strong></h2>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/20/tsmc-pushes-back-opening-of-european-factory-by-two-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC is the leading company in the chip-making industry </a>and is currently the only company that is mass-producing chips using their respective 3nm process nodes. Samsung is the only other company currently producing 3nm chips but uses a different type of transistor. TSMC&#8217;s N3 (3nm) process node is expected to be used for the production of the A17 Bionic, which will be found in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra, as well as Apple&#8217;s M2 Ultra and M3 chips.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-517076" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-2048x1152.jpeg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-1920x1080.jpeg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/apple-largest-customer-of-tsmc-reduces-chip-orders-747x420.jpeg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Despite TSMC&#8217;s continued use of FinFET transistors for its 3nm node, it has still been able to beat out Samsung Foundry when it comes to signing up customers, with big names like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/Qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Qualcomm</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/MediaTek/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MediaTek</a>, and Nvidia reserving production capacity for 2023 and 2024. In order to give Apple most of the 3nm production capacity later this year, Intel agreed to change its roadmap and delay receipt of its 3nm orders. TSMC&#8217;s enhanced 3nm process node (N3E) could be launched this year even though there might not be a big rush for orders considering the cost. It is worth noting that wafer prices have risen sharply over the years. In 2004, 90nm wafers sold for about $2,000, while in 2016, 10nm wafers cost $6,000, and in 2020, the price hit $16,000 for 5nm wafers. Wafer prices for 3nm chips are currently priced in the $20,000 area.</p>

<p>Intel has also announced that it will take process leadership from TSMC and Samsung by 2025, thanks to two developments. It will use RibbonFET transistors, which is another term for the Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors already employed by Samsung, and it will use a feature known as PowerVia or backside power delivery. This will allow transistors to obtain power from one side of a chip while using the other side to connect to data communication links.</p>

<p>The reduction in orders from Apple with TSMC is a reflection of the overall weakness of the global economy and the hangover from last year&#8217;s chip shortage. Despite this, TSMC remains the leading company in the chip-making industry, and its enhanced 3nm process node (N3E) could be launched this year. Additionally, Intel is set to take process leadership from TSMC and Samsung by 2025, thanks to the use of RibbonFET transistors and the PowerVia feature. The chip-making industry is constantly evolving, and it will be interesting to see how these developments will affect the industry in the future.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung </a>has been working on perfecting its advanced 3nm process technology and it seems like that production yield results for its most cutting edge chip fabrication line has almost been perfected.</p>

<p>Back in 2022, the South Korean tech giant was the first to kick off mass production of 3nm chips. Around this period, the company&#8217;s rate of production yield was in the range of 10 percent. Now, it appears that the first generation of 3nm process nodes have reached a &#8220;perfect&#8221; level of production yield, as per a source close to the matter. The report also claimed that the Samsung Foundry had begun taking orders from fabless clients to begin mass production of its most advanced chips earlier this week.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="845" height="563" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" class="wp-image-508138" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1.jpg 845w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/3nm_Chip_Production_main1-845x563-1-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to the source, &#8220;We are now developing second-generation 3nm chips without delay.” For those unaware, the production yield is basically how many chips remain on the wafer and are key to the profitability of the semiconductor process node. Notably, the 3nm process technology is all the first process node where Samsung applied its first generation GAA structure transistors. Simply put, it is a method on improving the chip performance and energy efficiency.</p>

<p>On the other hand, the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) employs its FinFET technology for the 3nm process, which entered mass production just last month. But while TSMC was months behind Samsung, the former also has Apple as one of its major customers.</p>

<p>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, aka <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc">TSMC</a>, which is the world&#8217;s largest foundry, is all set to start the mass production of its 3nm chips this week.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a>, which is among the top customers for the Taiwan-based company, will be the primary customer for the chips manufactured using this new process and will be a part of the tech giant&#8217;s M2 lineup.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="TSMC Logo" class="wp-image-505290" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/tsmc-1.jpeg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>As per the report, TSMC will start mass production of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3nm chips</a> on 29th December, Thursday, which is in line with the previous reports, which indicated that the company could start mass production of the 3nm node process by the end of the year.</p>

<p>It is said that TSMC will hold a ceremony at Fab 18 at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) on December 29 to mark the start of commercial production of chips using 3nm process <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/technology">technology</a>. It will also detail plans to expand 3nm chip production at the fab, according to sources at semiconductor equipment companies.</p>

<p>For Apple, before the A17 Bionic chip for the upcoming iPhone 15 and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/09/26/apple-iphone-15-ultra-replace-pro-max-model/">iPhone 15 Ultra</a> models, the Cupertino-based company is expected to place orders for the 3nm M2 Pro chip, which will be powering the upcoming MacBook Pro and the Mini Mini. Both these chips, A17 Bionic and M2 Pro, are expected to ship later next year.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> is also able to mass produce 3nm chips using Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors, allowing more precise control of current flow through each transistor and improved power efficiency. TSMC will be using FinFET transistors for the 3nm node but will adopt GAA transistors for the 2nm chips, which is likely to happen in 2025.</p>

<p>The 3 nm era has officially started in chip production. Manufacturers such as Samsung and TSMC have started the production process for chips that develop with this technology. It looks like TSMC will start shipping 3nm chips to Apple for the iPhone 15 series. Although this situation is good in terms of performance and energy efficiency, its reflection on costs has already begun. TSMC&#8217;s wafer prices double from 7nm production to 3nm.</p>

<h3>TSMC&#8217;s wafer prices double from 7nm production to 3nm</h3>

<p>The A17 Bionic chip developed by Apple for the iPhone 15 series will be produced by TSMC, the world&#8217;s leading chip foundry, using a state-of-the-art process node. Simply put, the lower the process node number, the smaller the transistors used in a chip allowing more transistors inside a chip, the more powerful and energy-efficient it is. This process causes more advanced processors to emerge every year.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="tsmc wafer" class="wp-image-497537" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-15-series-prices-may-be-higher-than-expected-because-of-tsmc-1.jpeg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>For Example, iPhone 11 had 7nm A13 Bionic SoC, released in 2019 that carried 8.5 billion transistors in each chip but iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max had the A16 Bionic chipset under their hoods. Unfortunately, maintaining the progress we&#8217;ve seen in the past is getting harder and harder each year.</p>

<p>Both TSMC and Samsung have plans for 2nm chips starting in 2025 and it is even possible that we will see 1nm by 2030. Although these developments have many advantages, they also come with costs. According to the latest reports TSMC plans on charging more than $20,000 for 3nm wafers. When the foundry moved from 7nm to 5nm, wafer pricing rose 60% from $10,000/wafer to $16,000/wafer.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-1024x683.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-497539" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm-630x420.webp 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/tsmc-wafer-prices-double-from-7nm-production-to-3nm.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>At first glance, these costs do not make sense for the end user, but the increase in prices is inevitable. Based on this, it is possible to say that the iPhone 15 and other flagship models will come out at a higher price than expected. Especially considering that the cost increase is not limited to wafers.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> has been making Google&#8217;s Tensor chips, and now it appears that the South Korean technology giant has increased involvement with Google and will be working on making a new chipset for its upcoming flagship smartphones.</p>

<p>As <a href="https://twitter.com/OreXda/status/1592498347168116736">per the new report</a> from tipster Connor, Samsung is working with Google&#8217;s Tensor team and AMD&#8217;s graphics team to create a new chipset that will be powering the Samsung Galaxy S-series flagship smartphones, most likely from 2025.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="Samsung Exynos Chipset Featured" class="wp-image-496325" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Samsung-Exynos-Featured.jpeg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>It is being said that the chipset will consist of two high-performance Cortex-X cores, four performance-focused cores running at a lower clock speed, and four energy-efficient cores. The diagram shared indicates that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a> GPU will be included in the chipset for processing grahpic-intensive tasks.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> and Samsung have already teamed up to produce Google Tensor chips for the Pixel series smartphones. The Tensor and Tensor G2 chips powering the Pixel 6 and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-pixel-7">Pixel 7 series</a> smartphones are manufactured by Samsung. They are basically Exynos chips but with AI features on top from Google&#8217;s team.</p>

<p>Recent reports indicate that both these companies have already started working on the third-generation <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-tensor">Google Tensor SoC</a>, which will be debuting with the Pixel 8 series smartphones next year. The chip is reportedly codenamed &#8220;Ripcurrent&#8221; and carries model number S5P9865.</p>

<p>Most of the chips for smartphones nowadays are manufactured using the 5nm or 4nm process, but since this new chipset for the future Galaxy S-series phones is expected to go official a couple of years from now, it could be manufactured using a more advanced <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/3nm">3nm process</a> and there&#8217;s a high possibility of that happening given that Samsung has already started working on 3nm chips.</p>
