Canon has announced that 2026 marks 30 years of its PowerShot compact digital camera lineup. To commemorate the occasion, the company will release a limited-edition version of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III with updated design elements and anniversary branding.

Three decades of PowerShot evolution

The PowerShot series was introduced in July 1996 with the PowerShot 600. Over the years, Canon expanded the lineup across multiple segments. Early models included the PowerShot A5 launched in April 1998, and the PowerShot Pro70 in November 1998. The S series debuted with the S10 in October 1999, followed by the G series with the G1 in October 2000.

The company continued to add new categories, including the TX1 in March 2007, SX100 IS in October 2007, and E1 in September 2008. Later models, such as the PowerShot D10 (May 2009) and PowerShot N (April 2013) extended the range further. Most recently, Canon introduced the video-focused V series with the PowerShot V10 in June 2023.

Canon states that the PowerShot lineup has been built around delivering still photography and video in compact, easy-to-use designs. As of December 2025, the company says total global production of compact digital cameras, including the IXUS series, has exceeded 200 million units.

Current lineup structure

The current PowerShot portfolio is divided into three categories. The G series targets users looking for high image quality and advanced controls. The V series is positioned for video-focused use cases such as vlogging. The SX series is aimed at users who need extended zoom capabilities.

PowerShot G7 X Mark III: 30th anniversary edition

Canon will mark the anniversary with a limited-edition version of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, originally launched in August 2019. The camera features a 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels and a lens with 4.2x optical zoom. It also includes a dedicated Video Blog recording mode.

The anniversary model introduces cosmetic and packaging changes. These include a graphite color finish, a knurled control ring, a 30th anniversary logo on the body, and a collector’s edition wrist strap. It will also ship in commemorative packaging.

After putting it through everyday usage in a home-office environment, the G4780 comes across as a multifunction printer designed for consistent, cost-effective performance rather than flashy features. Here is how it holds up in real use.

Design and daily usability

The Pixma G4780 is compact for an ink-tank printer with an ADF. It fits comfortably on a desk without demanding too much space, and at around 7.5 kg it is light enough to move around when needed. The layout is neat, the tanks are visible from the front and the build quality feels solid for its category.

The 2.7-inch color touchscreen is one of the most helpful elements of the design. Navigation is simple, and most settings such as Wi-Fi setup, print modes, copy preferences and maintenance functions are easy to access without diving through complicated menus. I customised a couple of shortcuts, which quietly made routine tasks a bit quicker.

Ink refilling is straightforward thanks to Canon’s no-spill bottle design. The bottles lock in place, fill automatically and stop once the tank is full, so there is no mess or risk of overfilling. Visibility of ink levels is excellent, something that becomes important when printing in volume.

Print quality and real-world performance

Print quality from the G4780 is consistent with Canon’s reputation. Black text looks crisp and well-defined, and colour output is vibrant enough for charts, presentations and school projects. It is not a professional photo printer, but casual 4 by 6-inch photo prints come out clean and bright.

Print speeds are reasonable for an ink-tank system. In day-to-day use, it delivers around 11 images per minute in black and 6 images per minute in colour. These are not the fastest figures, but they are steady and reliable enough for office and home workloads. Auto duplex printing works smoothly and adds convenience for longer documents, even if it slows down the process a bit.

Ink efficiency and maintenance

The biggest strength of the G4780 is the ink economy. After several sets of documents and colour prints, the ink levels barely shifted, which is reassuring for anyone who prints regularly. Canon rates the bottles for up to 7600 pages in black and 8100 pages in colour using economy mode. While real-world results vary, the efficiency is clearly noticeable.

It helps that Canon includes full-capacity GI-71 bottles in the box rather than starter quantities. The user-replaceable maintenance cartridge is another practical touch, allowing routine upkeep without depending on service centres. For long-term users, this is a cost-saving feature that improves the printer’s life span.

Scanning, copying and overall workflow

The Auto Document Feeder turned out to be more useful than I initially expected. With a capacity of 35 sheets, it handles multi-page scans and copies with ease. I used it for contracts, old printouts, receipts and handwritten notes, and the feeder pulled pages cleanly without skewing or jamming. It is not very fast when copying in color, but the convenience of loading a batch and walking away far outweighs the speed.

The scanning quality is suitable for normal office work. The CIS scanner produces clear text and reasonably accurate colors at 600 by 1200 dpi. The ability to scan through both the flatbed and ADF means it covers everything from ID cards to long legal documents. I found the Canon PRINT app particularly helpful for scanning directly to my phone, especially when I needed to forward documents quickly.

Connectivity and printing convenience

Setting up the printer on Wi-Fi was simple and quick. The touchscreen makes the process easier because there is no guessing or trial-and-error with buttons. Once connected, the printer remained stable on the network.

Printing from mobile devices is smooth. The Canon PRINT app works reliably, and AirPrint and Mopria support ensure compatibility with both iOS and Android. Cloud printing through services like Google Drive also worked well. Printing from laptops is equally straightforward, and the drivers install without complications.

Direct Wireless mode is a surprisingly useful feature. It allows printing without a router, which is convenient when someone needs to print a document immediately without joining your home network.

Paper handling, noise and reliability

The rear tray supports a wide range of paper sizes, including A4, A5, Letter, Legal, various photo formats and even banner sheets up to 1200 mm in length. To test handling, I printed a long banner, and the printer managed it without any issues. For regular office tasks, the 100-sheet tray capacity is enough to avoid frequent refilling.

Noise levels are well managed. Quiet Mode makes the printer suitable for late-night use without disturbing others. Power consumption is also low, with the printer drawing only about 18W while operating.

Canon’s two-year or 30,000-print onsite warranty adds confidence to long-term use. The fact that print heads are included in the warranty is a reassuring addition.

Final thoughts

After using the Canon Pixma G4780 in a real home-office environment, it stands out as a dependable and economical multifunction printer. It does not aim for ultra-fast speeds or professional-grade photo output, but it delivers exactly what most home and small-office users need: reliable printing, useful scanning features, a genuinely helpful ADF, strong ink efficiency and seamless connectivity. If your focus is long-term savings, everyday convenience and solid print quality, the G4780 is a well-rounded choice that fits naturally into modern work or study routines. Canon India has launched the EOS R6 Mark III full-frame mirrorless camera and the RF45mm F1.2 STM lens. The EOS R6 Mark III succeeds the 2023 EOS R6 Mark II, bringing a 32.5-megapixel sensor, enhanced autofocus, and advanced video capabilities for professionals.

The camera supports high-resolution shooting with flexible cropping and includes a pre-continuous shooting feature that records up to 20 frames before the shutter is pressed, available in RAW, C-RAW, or HEIF formats. Autofocus improvements enhance subject tracking in complex lighting or motion scenarios, while the Register People Priority function allows pre-registered subjects to be prioritized in group shots.

The EOS R6 Mark III retains the durable body design of its predecessor with better ergonomics and button customization for vertical handheld use. It features exposure and color monitoring tools such as waveform, false colors, and zebras, along with AWB Response and Shockless WB for smoother white balance transitions. Creative options include 14 Color Filters and Slow & Fast Motion modes for flexible video workflows.

Canon EOS C50 Cinema Camera

The EOS C50 is Canon’s smallest and lightest cinema camera, weighing about 1.5 pounds. It features a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor, 7K 60P internal RAW recording, and 32 megapixel still photo capture. The sensor supports Dual Base ISO of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2 and can record 12-bit Cinema RAW Light up to 7K 60P. The DIGIC DV7 processor powers the system, and the C50 becomes the first Cinema EOS model with full frame 3:2 open gate recording.

The camera offers multiple recording formats, including Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, XF-AVC S, and XF-HEVC S. These formats are designed to preserve metadata while recording in the MP4 structure. The C50 can also capture simultaneous cropped video in 2K when shooting in 4K DCI or UHD, with crop options of 9:17, 9:16, or 1:1.

Connectivity includes support for XC protocol, remote control over IP via Wi-Fi, or through a third-party USB-C Ethernet adapter. It is also compatible with the Multi Camera Control App and integrates with frame.io Camera to Cloud. The detachable top handle provides two full-size XLR audio inputs, a start-stop button, and a zoom rocker. The RF mount allows use with Canon’s RF lenses, including the new RF85mm F1.4 L VCM Hybrid Lens.

Firmware updates will be released later in 2025 for the EOS C400, C80, C70, and R5C. Updates will add 3:2 open gate recording to the C400, improve focus peaking, add view assist in media mode, and enhance assign buttons and joystick controls on the C80 and C400.

Canon has also refreshed the PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, now named the PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A. The update changes the memory card slot from SD to microSD. It will be available in black and silver.

CINE-SERVO 11-55mm T2.95-3.95 Lens

Canon has also announced the CINE-SERVO 11-55mm T2.95-3.95 lens. It offers a 100 degree ultra-wide angle and covers Super 35mm sensors. A built-in 1.5x extender expands coverage to full-frame, increasing the focal range to 82.5mm. The 11mm wide end is equivalent to 4.1mm on a 2/3-inch broadcast camera.

The lens includes a new drive unit with faster focus and iris speeds, Focus Breathing Compensation, and a USB-C port for personalized settings. A 16-bit encoder supplies precise positional information for virtual production. Available in RF and PL mounts, it supports autofocus with RF, and Cooke/i Technology and Zeiss eXtended Data with PL. It also includes a programmable rocker switch, ARIA compatibility for illumination adjustments, and ALAC support for aberration correction with supported cameras.

Canon has unveiled a compact and lightweight virtual reality (VR) lens. It is the Canon RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM dual fisheye. The new Canon VR lens is scheduled to go on sale later this month. The RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE is the first non-L class VR lens to adopt the brand’s Air Spherical Coating technology, delivering stronger anti-reflection effects.

The new lens is designed specifically for the APS-C EOS R7 mirrorless camera. It provides an easier-to-use option for persons who are into VR photography. It is the first VR lens in the RF-S series and offers an ultra-wide angle view of 144 degrees. The model can combine with the EOS R7 to operate as lightweight 3D VR shooting equipment. The VR lens has a built-in refractive prism and together with its optimized structure, meets the requirements of short back focus and optical path bending.

The resolution of the EOS R7 with the new VR lens is comparable to the combination of the EOS R5 with the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE. The pixel density per 1-degree angle of view of the lens is similar to that of the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE. Both the left and right lenses of the VR lens integrate an electromagnetically driven aperture that ensures consistent exposure for the two lenses.

The Canon RF-S3.9mm F3.5 lens is equipped with a stepping motor with dual-lens autofocus functionality. It can also synchronously drive the left and right lenses for autofocus. The shooting and production process of the EOS VR system consists of shooting, viewing, converting, and editing. Users can also convert their videos and photos using the EOS VR Utility application into VR content.

Canon dropped a teaser image today hinting at the release of a new EOS C movie camera on June 5th. While details are scarce, the image suggests it might be the long-rumored EOS C70 Mark II.

The teaser image features text in Japanese that translates to “Cinema” and “June 5th,” with a countdown timer underneath. The silhouette of the camera itself closely resembles the existing EOS C70, a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for filmmakers and cinematographers. This has led many to believe the upcoming release will be the EOS C70 Mark II, an update to the popular camera.

The original EOS C70 boasts a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor capable of over 16 stops of dynamic range. It also features Canon’s unique Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus technology for sharp focus, even when recording at high frame rates.

The Canon PowerShot GOLF laser rangefinder camera uses laser ranging technology and is different from GPS ranging products in the market. It offers a high range of accuracy and also offers a shooting function. The rangefinder camera adopts an integrated compact structure design encapsulated by its lightweight body. It weighs about 151g and can be easily carried around. The camera is equipped with an 11MP sensor that delivers a maximum measuring length of 732m. Its built-in 35mm lens has an equivalent focal length of 410mm and supports 2x digital zoom. The expanded focal length when digital zoom is implemented is about 820mm. The rangefinder camera has a slope compensation function, making it an accurate tool for enhancing your golf performance.

Canon says the PowerShot GOLF can capture objects that could be difficult to capture ordinarily. It can capture a flagpole even from a long distance and offers a panoramic view of the target golf hole. The camera is also a rangefinder with photo and video recording functionality. It can record photos in JPEG format, and videos in MP4 format, as well as help golfers measure and record distances. The picture and video playback will help the golfer hone his skills.

Pricing & Availability

The Canon PowerShot GOLF rangefinder camera will enter the market in July 2024. Canon has not provided any pricing information yet for the PowerShot GOLF.

The latest financial report released by Japanese tech giant Canon indicates the brand grew its revenue by 3.7% from 2022. The 2023 full-year revenue was about 4.18 billion yen ($28.335 billion). Canon’s net profit for the year 2023 increased by 8.4% from the previous year, the report also showed.

The revenue was spread between Canon’s four main businesses namely printing solutions, imaging, medical solutions, and industrial equipment/ other products. The printing business accounted for 2.346 trillion yen ($15.90 billion) in revenue, with a YoY increase of 3.2%. The report indicates that the printing business accounted for about 56.1% of the overall revenue of the Canon brand for 2023. The products from this arm include digital printing systems with some recent innovative offerings like the color digital printer image PRESS V1350.

The imaging business of Canon in 2023 had a revenue profile of 861.6 billion yen ($5.81 billion) with a 7.2% year-on-year increase. The sales in this segment were fueled by Canon’s new interchangeable lens digital cameras, network cameras, and diverse products from the lineup. Some of the new products were the EOS R6 Mark II, the EOS R8, and the EOS R50 cameras. There is a huge market demand for network cameras with diverse applications.

The medical business field revenue for Canon in 2023 was 553.8 billion yen ($3.75 billion) with a 7.9% increase in revenue. Canon’s medical business field continued to enjoy strong sales, driven by demand for MRI equipment, X-ray equipment, and ultrasonic diagnostic equipment. The sales have been heavily situated in Japan and Europe and this year’s output surpassed the previous year’s record.

The industrial equipment arm of Canon got a revenue of 314.7 billion yen ($2.13 billion) which reflected a year-on-year decline of 4.4%. The demand for power equipment continues to be strong but FPD exposure equipment experienced market investment fluctuations. Overall, Canon expects the outlook for 2024 to be bright despite some setbacks, especially in the industrial equipment business.

Japanese company Canon has released a black limited edition of its popular PowerShot ZOOM Mini Telescopic camera. The product also comes with a special black gold gift box.

Just as the name suggests, the black limited edition PowerShot ZOOM camera adopts a black body with a frosted exterior design that looks stylish and cool.

The Canon PowerShot Zoom camera was first launched in 2020 and was well-received. The Black Limited edition shares the same specification as the initial model which adopts a white body. As a reminder, the 145g Canon Powershot Zoom micro telescopic camera can be handled in one hand and is only slightly heavier than a cell phone. It resembles the conventional monocular telescope in appearance. There is an electronic viewfinder in the eyepiece. There are physical buttons to change the focus and start shooting on top and bottom of the camera. A scene from a football game is shown in Canon’s official marketing video. Through Powershot Zoom, spectators can observe the leg motions of players who are standing a distance away.

It also allows for real-time focus adjustment and photo capture while recording a video. It has two optical focal lengths of 100mm and 400mm, as well as a digital focal length of 800mm. Smooth zoom does not appear to be available based on the promotional video.

The camera includes a 12.1 megapixel 1/3 inch sensor. In comparison to the contemporary mobile phone lens, this sensor is quite small. The lens size should be proportional to the body size and cost. In terms of shooting specifications, the Powershot Zoom offers continuous shooting at 10 frames per second, video recording at 1080p/30fps, and facial recognition.

The camera is also waterproof, dustproof, and drop-proof, making it ideal for use during outdoor sports.

The PowerShot ZOOM black limited edition is available exclusively on Canon’s official online store and Canon’s self-operated Tmall flagship store in China. The price is unknown at this time.

It is no longer news that the semiconductor industry is facing more demands than it can meet leaving several backlogs in orders. This has led to a global chip shortage forcing companies who rely on these chips for production to make adjustments. Popular printer manufacturer Canon has reportedly made an adjustment to a feature on its printer cartridge and we doubt if the feature will be missed by many.

According to a report by Apple Insider, Canon printer cartridges are no longer shipping with chips programmed to confirm that the ink inserted is genuine or fake. The situation was first discovered by Twitter user Mario W who disclosed that Canon is producing ink cartridges devoid of what he termed “copy-protection measures.” The tipster also disclosed that the company is already contacting customers about a fix.

Apart from detecting genuine ink, the chip on the cartridge also helps coordinate other functions like alerting users of the ink level. Apple Insider noted that a support page for several of the brand’s imageRunner printers listed on its Europe website have indications that they use ink cartridges affected by the shortages. The company stated that the absence of a chip won’t affect the performance of the printers but noted that features such as “the ability to detect toner levels” could be affected. There is also a guide on how to bypass a warning message about a “malfunctioning cartridge”.

We doubt if so any persons would miss this feature as it is mostly self-serving. Most printer manufacturers have often subjected users to using ink cartridges manufactured by them even in cases where there are cheaper third-party cartridges. However, we believe the company will resume manufacturing ink cartridges with the chip as soon as the chip crisis resolves.

Canon has launched a new outdoor 4K camera that can function as a traditional camera as well as a surveillance camera. Canon‘s Chinese subsidiary Canon Information Technology has reportedly installed cameras using artificial intelligence in its offices across China that recognize smiling faces only. In other words, the camera will only allow workers who put up a smile into the facilities. The camera utilizes AI-enabled “smile recognition” technology in its China offices.

The cameras are installed with the intent of ensuring that all employees are 100 percent happy all the time. Staff will only be allowed into rooms, or book meetings when they put up a smile. However, we doubt if the technology will in any way achieve the purpose for which it was installed. All an unhappy employee has to do is fake a smile to gain the required access.

Last year, China surpassed the United States in the number of artificial intelligence patent filings. Thus, it is no wonder that the Japanese multinational corporation chose China as a testbed for this new technology. The smile recognition technology was first announced last year by the company as a component of its latest workplace management tools. However, it hasn’t gained any traction and we doubt if it will ever gain wide acceptance.

The technology might face stiff hurdles in the U.S and other regions where it might be viewed as an invasion of privacy. Workplace cameras are generally legal if they are installed in a public place and the employees are aware of it. Also, the company will need to show that there is a legitimate need to film under the law in some countries. In this case, we can’t figure out the need that would require a “smile recognition” camera.

The known camera giant Canon might be working on a new all in one gimbal and camera of its own, which could be similar to and rival the DJI Osmo Pro. A new patent has revealed the design of this gimbal, which slightly resembles the Osmo Pro that launched a few years prior.

Looking at the new patent, the new Canon gimbal appears to feature a large rear facing screen for viewing and two joysticks for controlling the gimbal. The patent also arrives with drawings of this, which also reveals the overall design of the product. A handle can be observed that houses the battery, a gimbal with two axes, a rear display, the controllers, and the camera sensor itself that has a mounting point for the lenses.

Notably, the camera sensor also has a hot show shoe on the top, which is likely to mount accessories on top of it. Furthermore, there also appear to be various pins in the sketches. What appears to be a toggle switch can also be observed, which might be for in camera stabilizations or to remove the lenses, as per a DroneDJ report.

The two axis gimbal design offers both pros and cons, as it can improve in stabilization by removing the need for a tilt axis to stabilize the gimbal. although, it would also eliminate the ability to take rolling shots as well. The Canon gimbal might be controlled through the two joysticks and the large touch screen. A larger button can also be seen, which is likely the shitter button for the camera. Unfortunately, this is just a patent and we have no way of knowing if Canon is actually working on this product. However, the company might be trying to expand its product lineup.

Canon has recently been hit with a ransomware attack. It has affected a number of its services, including Canon’s email, Microsoft Teams, company’s USA website, and other internal applications as well.

BleepingComputer had reported on the incident after tracking an outage on Canon’s image.canon cloud photo and video storage service. This resulted in the loss of data worth 10TB for users that utilized the storage feature. The outage occurred on 30th July 2020 and lasted over six days. Meanwhile, the site would display status updates until it went back in service on 4th August 2020.

Furthermore, an internal source reached out to BleepingComputer, sharing an image of a company wide notification. This message was titled “Message from IT Service Center,” which was sent by Canon’s IT department. According to this message, Canon was experiencing a “wide spread system issues affecting multiple applications, Teams, Email, and other systems may not be available at this time.”

A number of Canon domains were also affected by the cyberattack, while an alleged ransom note had been discovered soon after. The attack was from the Maze ransomware, who stated that they stole, “10 terabytes of data, private databases, etc,” for their attack on Canon. Although, Maze also revealed that the image.canon outage was not caused by them. Maze has stolen unencrypted files from servers and backups and has harvested the network of anything of value and gain access to a Windows domain controller. They have also been responsible for other high profile attacks in the past as well, so we will have to wait and see how the situation develops further.

A team of dedicated Japanese researchers has made a breakthrough in the method for the detection of Coronavirus infection. The group has developed a test kit that is capable of providing results for a possible viral infection in just 10 minutes, notably faster than the current testing standards that are in place right now.

For those unaware, a new strand of Coronavirus has been a cause of major alarm across the globe. The virus originated from China and has been confirmed in upwards of 178 countries as of right now. It has been categorized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a highly infectious virus. But now, Nagasaki University after teaming up with the Canon Medical Systems and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases has developed a new quick and efficient testing method.

The method is currently undergoing clinical trials in the Nagasaki Prefecture, which has just recently seen its first confirmed report of the Coronavirus infection. The gadget requires just a swab from the patient’s nose or throat or any genetic material which may have traces of the virus and uses a fluorescent dye to illuminate the infection for the researchers.

The kit requires less time to bring the vital materials to detectable levels than in a standard polymerase chain-reaction tests. For a fully accurate level of detection, the test can take up to 40 minutes from start to finish and can allow a single unit to test up to 700 unique samples in a single day. Given it runs the entire day non stop. The system is currently in the Nagasaki University and is being planned to be distributed to various university hospitals and other medical institutions in Japan.

Due to fierce competition between different smart phones, the quality of smart phone cameras has greatly improved in the last several years. So how does the quality of photos taken by cell phones compare with those taken by regular cameras?

An internet user recently attempted to answer this question by taking night photos using the vivo Xshot phone and Canon’s Powershot SX130 camera.

       When in auto-snap mode, the photos taken by the Canon SX130 are slightly overexposed, but you can still see the darkness of the night. As for night photos taken using the Vivo Xshot, the photo is very clear but the night’s darkness is slightly underexposed.

Let’s see what happens when they are are set to “night setting” mode.

Canon improved the SX130’s ISO for its night setting mode as well as the shutter. However, the noise in the picture is unbearable. When the vivo Xshot is put in night mode, is able to brighten the darker parts.

Let’s now point the camera to a river.

　Night mode increases the SX130’s ISO and shutter speed. This is not the case with the Vivo Xshot where they remain the same, however, the number of noise spots drop.

A photo of a statue was taken as well but with no flash. Because the lightning was terrible, the photographer took it using night mode.

The Vivo Xshot was able to take a shot of the statue but the SX130 couldn’t. While these photos are pretty bad, at least we know how far cell phone camers have gone in the last several years.
