China has officially entered the legal AI arms race. Last Friday, researchers unveiled the “Xiao Baogong Legal Content Model,” a specialized artificial intelligence system that’s been fed an absolutely staggering diet of legal documents: over 200 million court judgments and 4.2 million laws and regulations. It’s the country’s first large-scale vertical legal AI model, and it represents a significant escalation in how governments are thinking about AI-powered legal services.

Dual-engine approach to legal AI

The timing isn’t coincidental. While China has been developing competitive general-purpose models like DeepSeek and systems from Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance, the country has also been particularly aggressive about creating highly specialized AI systems designed for specific industries and use cases. This isn’t just an academic exercise. The model has already passed algorithm registration with China’s Cyberspace Administration, meaning it’s cleared for real-world deployment. Solving China’s legal desert problem

The bigger picture here is about access to justice. China has a significant legal services problem; its 700,000 practicing lawyers are heavily concentrated in wealthy eastern cities, leaving vast swaths of the country, particularly rural western regions, with little to no legal representation. Some counties don’t even have a single law firm. An AI system that can provide basic legal guidance and document analysis could theoretically help bridge this gap, offering a form of “democratized” legal service.

The real test is still ahead

But there are obvious questions about how this will work in practice. Legal AI systems have a well-documented tendency to “hallucinate”, generating plausible-sounding but completely fabricated legal citations and precedents. The researchers claim their system addresses this through its knowledge graph structure and emphasis on traceable, verifiable responses. The real test will be whether it can maintain that accuracy when deployed at scale.

There’s also the matter of legal nuance. While 200 million cases sounds impressive, the law isn’t just about pattern matching; it requires understanding context, weighing competing interests, and making judgment calls that even human experts disagree on. The system’s “dynamic learning mechanism,” which allows it to improve based on real-world feedback, suggests the researchers understand this challenge.

What’s perhaps most significant is that China is positioning this as more than just a research project. The launch at the “Xiao Baogong Cup” Legal Empirical Analysis Essay Competition, alongside a forum on building AI + Law laboratories, signals a coordinated push to move from academic exploration to widespread implementation.

Whether this focused approach to vertical AI specialization, alongside China’s broader general-purpose model development, proves more effective than relying primarily on general models for specialized tasks remains to be seen.

But one thing is clear: the global race to deploy AI in critical public services has just gotten a lot more interesting.

No EUV, No Problem

For years, the prevailing industry consensus was that EUV lithography, produced solely by Dutch company ASML, was indispensable for fabricating chips at 5nm and below. Without access to EUV systems due to export restrictions enforced by the U.S. and its allies, most analysts believed China’s chip ambitions would stall at the 7nm mark.

Instead, SMIC pushed forward using brute-force DUV techniques, squeezing every nanometer out of aging tools. Huo points to AMEC, now considered competitive with U.S.-based Lam Research in etching equipment, and NAURA, whose wafer cleaning tools rival those of Japan’s TEL. These firms were once seen as playing catch-up. Now they’re part of a parallel, self-reliant semiconductor supply chain.

“This isn’t just duplication,” Huo emphasized. “These are frontline fabs.” China is no longer imitating—it’s iterating on its own terms, with its own technology stack.

Sanctions Backfire, Huawei Surges

SMIC’s capabilities extend beyond smartphone chips. Huawei recently unveiled its Ascend 920 AI accelerator, reportedly manufactured on SMIC’s 6nm node. While SMIC remains cut off from EUV machines, it leveraged multi-patterning DUV lithography, possibly through its N+3 process, equivalent to 6nm, to produce this chip. The Ascend 920 delivers 900 TFLOPS of performance, a 30% to 40% jump over Huawei’s previous-gen 7nm Ascend 910C, along with 4 TB/s memory bandwidth.

Ironically, U.S. sanctions, specifically those restricting Nvidia’s H20 accelerator shipments to China, have boosted Huawei’s AI business. Every chip SMIC ships under sanctions is a statement of resilience. It proves that cutting China off from EUV didn’t stop progress, it redirected it. While DUV-based 5nm chips may not match the raw performance of TSMC or Samsung’s latest EUV-made nodes, they’re already “good enough” for most modern workloads, including AI, 5G, and high-performance consumer electronics.

There are already whispers that SMIC is experimenting with an even more extreme technique, Self-Aligned Octuple Patterning (SAOP), to push DUV down to 3nm territory. It sounds improbable, but in a world where elegance is increasingly a luxury, China is betting on sheer execution.

If successful, it could permanently redefine assumptions around lithography, tool dependencies, and the geopolitical control of chip supply chains.

Their findings challenge the long-held assumption of the Milky Way having a single exponential disk – a flat structure where stellar density decreases steadily moving outwards. Instead, the research suggests a more complex structure. The outer disk (beyond 24,000 light-years from the galactic center) appears to conform to the exponential model. However, the inner disk (between 11,000 and 24,000 light-years) exhibits a flatter distribution, with stellar density remaining relatively constant.

This revised understanding has significant implications. Previous estimates based on the exponential disk model placed the Milky Way’s radius at around 10,000 light-years, making it appear denser than galaxies of similar mass. The new data, however, suggests a nearly doubled radius of 19,000 light-years, bringing the Milky Way in line with other galaxies of its type.

Professor Lian emphasizes the importance of near-infrared observations in overcoming the limitations of traditional methods. Dust particles significantly affect visible light, but their impact on near-infrared wavelengths is much smaller. This allows for a clearer picture of stellar distribution, particularly within the Milky Way’s dusty inner regions.

Under simulated Martian conditions – including low atmospheric pressure, freezing temperatures, a dense CO2 atmosphere, and strong UV radiation – Syntrichia caninervis not only survived, it even managed to regenerate. Published in the journal “The Innovation”, the research suggests this moss could be a valuable tool in developing habitable environments beyond Earth. However, challenges remain. This design mimics the spatial distribution of mechanoreceptors found in human skin, like Merkel cells and Ruffini corpuscles. The result is a device capable of independently measuring pressure, friction, and strain at a physical level – a significant leap forward in artificial touch technology.

This bionic electronic skin is meticulously crafted with three distinct layers, mirroring the structure of human skin:

• Epidermis: The outermost layer, resembling the texture of human skin’s surface.
