Though this report was published on September 2, it is worth noting that it is for Q1 2020.

Streaming Devices

According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung was the leading streaming device brand in the first quarter of 2020 in 27 major countries with 14% of devices in use. Whereas, second and third positions were held by Sony and LG with 12% and 8% market share respectively.

Further, Hisense, TCL, and Amazon tied at fourth position with 5% market share each, followed by Nintendo and Microsoft at fifth position with 4%.

Interestingly, in sixth place with 3%, there were a total of seven brands such as Skyworth, Google, Vizio, Sharp, Roku, Philips, and Xiaomi. Also, with 2% in seventh place, there were four brands like Apple, Changhong, Panasonic, and Konka.

Whereas, the ninth position was captured by Haier, Toshiba, and Insignia with a 1% share. The remaining 9% was held by others category, which includes brands with negligible market share.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung to raise smartphone shipments to 300 million units in 2021, as Huawei shipments decline

Streaming Platforms

Talking about streaming platforms, once again, Samsung lead in these 27 markets with 11% share with its Tizen OS. But the second position was held by platforms of both LG and Sony namely WebOS and Sony Playstation with 7% share each.

Roku TV OS and Fire OS tied at third position with 5% market share, followed by Android TV and Microsoft Xbox in the fourth place with 4% share.

Google Chromecast came at fifth position with 3% share while Apple tvOS and Firefox OS clashed with each other in the sixth place with 2% market share. The remaining 49% was occupied by platforms in the others category.

Takeaways

One thing is obvious from this report that the leading streaming device manufacturers also top the chart in streaming platforms if they have any. Also, a plethora of TV manufacturers gained some share in the devices category. Most of them use Android TV but still, Google’s streaming platform only accounted for 4%.

Anyway, this report only includes data from 27 major countries. Even though, the number of active devices in these regions is an astonishing figure at 1.14 billion.

But who is John Bernard? It turns out that he is the Global Director of marketing at Mozilla and is in charge of promoting devices that use the Firefox OS around the world. Even though he did not directly say that Xiaomi will also use the Firefox OX, why did he bring them up? Could it be that Xiaomi and Firefox have already formed a partnership?

Right now, Xiaomi’s star products are the Mi phone and Red Mi. If they managed to attract WP and Firefox OS, then they could expand their product line.

Market research firm IDC has pointed out that during the period 2013-2017, the Indian smart phone market growth is expected to be among the first in the world, is expected to grow 459.7 percent to 155.6 million (2017 annual shipments).

According to another research firm Strategy Analytics show that India overtook Japan in the first quarter of this year, for the first time ranked the world’s third largest smart phone market, shipments of seasonal annual growth rate of 163%, 89% of smartphone adoption Android system. Well, Android really can eat low-end smart phone market firmly do?

According to technology blog theverge.com reported, Mozilla Corporation co-founder and chief technology officer Brandon – Archer (Brendan Eich) pointed out, Firefox (Firefox) operating system aimed at the feature phone market, Firefox OS mobile devices only need to push Gecko Web browser layout engine can be, but Android mobile devices will need to meet the Android Kernel, Dalvik and WebKit requirements.

Archer pointed out, Android 4.0 version of the operating system can not run on the phone 256MB RAM, but for low-end phones, Google is often recommended to use Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) version of the system. He predicted that in the next two years, Gingerbread Android platform will be the mainstream.

Mozilla, Telefonica and ZTE announced the 1st of this month, the world’s first mobile phone based on Firefox OS “ZTE Open” will be held July 2 on sale in Spain, Movistar, price (including VAT) to € 69, including € 30 prepaid fees, monthly users will enjoy zero interest installment purchase discount.

First Firefox Mobile already on sale in Spain, it is singing “open”, but in fact it, if successful, probably because of the price, not the software itself. The question is: Firefox can really build an ecosystem and iOS, Andorid, WP, Blackberry BB10 competition do? No, nor necessary, Firefox, most users do not care.

Why? Since we have entered the third stage of smartphone purchase. The first phase is an early stage, about 15% of users buy smart phones; followed by the second stage, cautious consumers to buy, once again increased 40-45% of the users; now entering the third phase, began the influx of cheap customers, at least in the European case.

So why choose the Spanish Offer ZTE Open phone? First, because the Spanish economic downturn, buy cheap mobile phone users may grow; Second, in European countries, the Spanish mobile phone penetration is already quite high, up to 66%, UK 64%, Europe 57%.

Mozilla vice president of products, COO Jay – Sullivan (jay sullivan) also said in a statement: “For the purposes WEB, Firefox OS launch is exciting. Firefox OS for smart phones rely entirely on WEB technology to build, will stimulate innovation Sina WEB tide appears. smartphone for the first consumer purchase brings outstanding experience, to please them, to the WEB efforts on their hands, we are honored. ”

Visible, Firefox’s real goal is to “first purchase smart phone users,” these people are currently still using feature phones. And a lot of these users, ZTE Open might sell a few million units.

Archer clarified that, Firefox OS not to with today’s high-end smartphone competition. He said: “We are not targeting the high-end, will not break Apple fortress, Google fortress.” Instead, Firefox’s goal is to feature phone market, targeting those who still use feature phones users.

Mozilla is currently developing a new JavaScript API, and first appeared in the the Firefox OS operating system, which allows users to purchase digital products and services available on the network in very convenient method. It is reported that there are two ways to pay, either using a credit card to pay a bill or the using the spend ammpount of money by each month.

Firefox OS engineers Kumar McMillan said in a blog post The Mozilla’s API navigator.mozPay (), based on the Google Wallet API, but for a number of payment providers improvements, especially for the monthly payment mode adds a lot of features.

When a mobile application calls this API, a very simple window pops up on the screen, the user can secure password authentication in the above, thus completing the entire payment process.

Mozilla is sparing no effort to pay operators to promote this mechanism, the present situation in good condition. With this API, Mozilla can bring more benefits to the user, can also be more firm control of the user. For example, it may be in the near future, we will in Mozilla own application store this API to purchase applications.

Mozilla wants to carry out another business, but no ad network content. McMillan noted, content charges will be another profit model for mobile applications. Past history, this charging system on the entire Internet is not ideal, Mozilla wants a better service platform launched by their own. If you can improve the speed and security of small transactions, it is bound to increase the possibility of the user to pay for content. Although users in the past to pay for content, the enthusiasm is not high, but now is the era of mobile Internet, the situation is likely to change, to know that mobile devices can bring advertising revenue to content providers far computer multi- . McMillan said, “The Internet should support all the business model, paid services should become one of the most important features of Internet.”

As online payment paid in the future will evolve into what form, Mozilla engineers, the Mozilla plans and other Internet organizations to cooperate in the framework of the W3C to establish a standard network API.
Mozilla has finally announced the minimum requirement for mobile phones that will use a proprietary mobile operating system, Firefox OS.

And, from a list of the specifications mentioned by Mozilla, appears low end mobile phone of Firefox is not too different from other platforms.

To run Firefox OS operating system, Mozilla set some standards, such as minimum processor speed of 800 MHz, 256MB RAM and QVGA screen with 320 x 240 pixels resolution. Compared with other platforms, the minimum requirement is similar to Firefox OS minimum standards for Windows Phone device.

Some Firefox-based mobile OS that has emerged into the public also seems to use the minimum specifications set by Mozilla. The mobile-phone include ZTE and Alcatel One Touch Open Fire. In addition, Sony Mobile is also testing the Firefox OS on Sony Xperia E which also has a specification is not much different.

A new player in the smartphone arena is expected to come soon. The new player is a smart phone that uses the Firefox operating system. And, according to the latest rumors, the phone is ready to be launched at the Mobile World Congress 2013 held in Barcelona.

So, who’s going to launch the Firefox OS smart phone? ZTE is most likely the first to launch Firefox-based mobile OS. Moreover, the company, which originated in China is also said to unveiled their Firefox OS smartphone.

However, do not be too eager to get this smartphone. This OS is targetig for low-end smartphone on the market. In addition, the new Mozilla Firefox just gave two mobile OS to developers who offer basic specification, when compared to the high end of the Android mobile phone.

In addition, Firefox OS is also a web-based operating system. With these technologies, the operating system does not require sophisticated specifications to work properly.

So, we have to wait the appearance about those smartphone until Mobile World Congress events next month.

Mozilla has finally officially bring the first smartphone to use the Firefox OS. Mobile is intended for developers with very basic features.

As a first step, Mozilla working with Telefonica Mobile and Geeksphone thats phone is called Keon. In addition, according Geeksphone, the Mozilla also released another model named Peak.

Keon Mobile also has a specification that is not too special, powered by 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 3.5-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, sports with 3 megapixel camera, 1580 mAh battery capacity, GSM and HSPA network support, microSD slot, microUSB, light and proximity sensor, GPS and G-sensor.

Meanwhile Peak models comes with a screen measuring 4.3 inch with 960 x 540 pixels, a dual core processor 1.2GHz Qualcomm S4 Snadpragon, 8 megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM and 1800 mAh battery capacity.

However, the Firefox operating system does not require high hardware to work optimally. That one OS is built based on HTML5 and other web programming languages. So, it is a web application designed app to run as native applications.
