Note that this update is based on Android 10, so closed beta users will be the first to get the taste of the new Android version.

If you are using the Mate 20 X 5G as your daily driver, we would advise against installing a close beta EMUI 10. The closed beta build will have a lot of bugs that could hinder some of the smartphone’s essential features. Also, Huawei notes that some apps may still not be optimized for Android 10.

Interested users in China who want to enroll in the program can do it via Huawei’s Club app> Forum> Section Category> All Sections> EMUI Zone> Upgrade Early Adoption.

It’s good to see companies like Huawei and even Samsung working on Android 10 builds for their 5G models so quickly. Unfortunately, OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users will have to wait till Q1 2019 to get the new Android version.

A few months ago, DxOMARK began scoring the selfie cameras for smartphones too and just last month, it announced that it would add night camera and ultrawide-angle scores to its camera test protocol since both have become popular features present in phones.

Today, DxOMARK has introduced a new test protocol for smartphones called the DxOMARL Audio Test Protocol. This tests a phone’s audio recording and output quality and is only based on the playback performance of the phone’s internal speakers not when paired to headphones or external speakers.

The overall score is split into playback and recording just the way a phone’s camera score is split into photo and video. The test is carried out by audio engineers and experts in special labs and can take up to a week for a single device. DxOMARK says during testing, they recreate multiple usage scenarios such as a busy street. They also compare phones together during testing to make sure that their test scores are impartial.

At the moment, DxOMARK has tested seven devices they are the iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max, Galaxy Note10+, Galaxy S10+, Huawei Mate 20 X and Sony Xperia 1. Based on their test results, the Mate 20 X is at the top of the list and this is partly due to its stereo microphones which gives it a high score for recording.

The iPhone XS Max comes in second with a score of 74 points (Playback: 75, Recording: 69), pushing its successor the iPhone 11 Pro Max to third place with a score of 71 ((Playback: 72, Recording: 68). The Galaxy Note10+ and Galaxy S10+ score 66 and 65 points respectively, while the Honor 20 Pro and Xperia 1 close the list with a score of 53 points and 45 points respectively. The Honor 20 Pro and Xperia 1 not only score lowest but are the only two phones with a wide margin between their playback and recording scores.

DxOMARK says they will keep reviewing more devices and will keep updating the list, so if your favorite device isn’t on the list, it may be added in the future.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G borrows most of its specs from the 4G LTE Mate 20 X from last year. However, there are some noticeable differences between the two phones. The Mate 20 X was made available in Midnight Black and Phantom Silver colors. Its 5G version has arrived in Emerald Green color and also it sports a 5G logo on its back.

The Mate 20 X featured a gargantuan 5,000mAh battery with 22.5W rapid charging technology. The Mate 20 X 5G has a smaller 4,200mAh battery that comes with a quicker 40W fast charging technology. Its because of the inclusion of 5G antennas, Huawei had to reduce the size of Mate 20 X 5G’s battery. The primary SIM of the smartphone supports 5G connectivity, but its second SIM is limited to 4G networks only. The 5G connectivity is enabled on the device thanks to the Balong 5000 5G modem that can achieve peak download speeds of 4.6Gbps in sub-6Hz low-frequency band. The speed improves by 10X to 6.5Gbps if using millimeter wave or high-frequency band.

The phone made it to Switzerland a couple of weeks ago. It was the first country in the EU to get this Huawei flagship. Now, the company has launched the Mate 20 X 5G in the UK as well, and sales begin in June.

The 5G phone will support all the major networks in the UK like EE, O2, Three, and Vodaphone. The Mate 20 X 5G is very similar to its 4G edition, with the only major difference being the battery capacity. The new model features a 4200mAh battery as opposed to the 4G model’s 5000mAh battery. But the charging tech gets upgraded to 40W (instead of 22.5W on the 4G model!). The battery size reduction is probably due to space constraints caused by the addition of the Balong 5000 5G modem inside. Rest of the specifications remain the same as the regular Mate 20 X (you can find its full specs here!).

Interestingly, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is going to be a lot more expensive than in Switzerland. In the UK, the phone will start at £999 ($1278), which is way more than its price tag of CHF 997 ($987) in Switzerland.

Even with a battery reduction, the Mate 20 X 5G is a beast in terms of specs. With the Kirin 980 powering the device, the phone can handle everything thrown at it with ease. In the camera department, the phone does well all thanks to its 40MP f/1.8 triple camera setup. But the best feature of the phone is its beautiful 7.2-inch display supporting M-Pen stylus with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

We have reviewed the Mate 20 X 4G model and we loved it! You can check out our review from below.

In the coming months, multiple phones with Snapdragon 855 are expected to go official It remains to be seen whether it will be the Samsung Galaxy S10 or Sony Xperia XZ4 or any other phone will be the first Snapdragon 855 powered smartphone.

An unofficial listing of the Xperia XZ4 that was spotted earlier today revealed that it had scored over 395k points. Hence, it appears that Snapdragon 855 may start leading AnTuTu’s list of best performance Android phones by the end of first quarter of this year. Huawei is also rumored to be prepping up Kirin 985 chipset to power the Huawei P30 series that is expected to go official by the end of March. Hopefully, it could be a good rival for the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform.

To be precise, the Kirin 980 is 30 percent smaller than its predecessor. A die shot of the new chipset has been surfaced to reveal the placement of its different components.

The HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC measures only 74.13mm2. The top-left corner of the SoC features Mali G76MP10 graphics. It promises 50 percent better performance than the predecessor Mali-G72 MP12 available on the Kirin 970. The Kirin 980 is the first SoC from HiSilicon to adopt new DynamicIQ technology by ARM which makes it possible to build chipsets with versatile designs.

The quad-core Cortex A76 CPUs arranged in two pairs are attached the DynamicIQ Shared Unit (DSU). The offer different processing speeds of up to 2.6 GHz and 1.92 GHz. Each core of both the pairs are equipped with 512KB private L2 caches. On the either sides of the DSU is the quad-core Cortex A55 that can function at up to 1.8 GHz. The 4MB L3 cache is also attached to the DSU. The above image also shows the placement of the LPDDR4X RAM controllers. The Kirin 980 is the first SoC to feature 2,133Mhz memory.

The above image was shared by Chiprebel and the different components on it were labelled by AnandTech. What’s interesting about the layout is that the dual-core NPU unit for handling AI tasks cannot be seen. It should be present on the chip, but its position could not be identified. According to Huawei, the NPU unit of the Kirin 980 is two times faster than that of Kirin 970.

The list for the September month was completely populated by SD845 phones. Today, the benchmarking platform has released the list of top 10 best performance Android phones for October month. The top three positions on the list have been taken over by Kirin 980 chipset powered Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X smartphones.

As it can be seen in the below image, the first position is held by Huawei Mate 20 phone that has recorded 311,840 average benchmarking score. The second position goes to Mate 20 Pro that has raked in 307,693 points. The Mate 20 X is sitting on the third position with a score of 303,112.

Another new phone that has appeared on AnTuTu’s list is the all new Xiaomi Black Shark Helo phone that has reached 301,757 mark on the benchmarking platform. The original Xiaomi Black Shark phone is sitting on the fifth position with 293,544 benchmarking score.

The Meizu 16th smartphone that was announced in August is on the sixth spot with a score of 293,554. The seventh position goes to OnePlus 6 that has salvaged a benchmarking score of 292,371. The ASUS ROG Phone (291,701) Smartisan R1 (291,102) and Nubia Z18 (290,332) are the remaining phones that are present on the list of top 10 best performance Android smartphones for October.

AnTuTu has stated that the aforementioned points for each smartphone are not the highest benchmarking score, but an average of their scores. Smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, OnePlus 6T and Honor Magic 2 that were announced at the end of the previous month haven’t made it the October list by AnTuTu. These phones are expected to rank well in AnTuTu’s top 10 best performance Android smartphones list in November that will be released in the coming. As far as October’s benchmarking scores are concentered, the new list is a clear evidence that the Kirin 980 powered phones have outperformed SD845 driven smartphones.

The Mate 20 X is the latest member of the Mate series and it is designed for gamers.

Mate 20 X Specs

The Mate 20 X can be called a mix of the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro as it has a number of features from both phones. Take for example its screen, it is much larger than both phones at 7.2-inches but it has the water-drop notch and 1080 x 2244 resolution of the Mate 20 and it is an OLED panel like the Mate 20 Pro.

The Mate 20 X is powered by the Kirin 980 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage like the Mate 20 Pro. It also has triple rear cameras and they are the same configuration as the Pro’s (40MP + 20MP + 8MP). Its front-facing camera is a 24MP sensor.

The phone comes with GPU Turbo 2.0, so gaming performance should even be better. To solve heating issues, Huawei says the Mate 20 X uses Huawei Supercool – a cooling technology which consists of a vapor chamber and a graphene film cooling technology. We believe this is the same cooling technology that will surface in the Honor Magic 2 scheduled to launch at the end of the month.

Huawei has a couple of accessories for the Mate 20 X such as a gaming pad that attaches to the left of the device. The gaming pad has a D-pad and an analog stick. Reminds us of the Black Shark gaming phone’s gamepad but the Black Shark’s own is missing a D-pad.

The Mate 20 X also has support for a stylus dubbed the M-Pen. The stylus has up to 4096 levels of pressure and can be used for note-taking right from the locked screen and for creating notes via the Easy Memo app. It has to be purchased separately and can’t be stored in the device like the S-Pen of the Samsung Galaxy Note series. Huawei says the Mate 20 X supports wireless projection to a larger screen.

The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for SuperCharge, a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, dual-band GPS, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and NFC. It also has an IR sensor, stereo speakers NFC, and an NM memory card slot for up to 256GB of extra space. It runs Android Pie out of the box.

Mate 20 X Price and Availability

The phone is priced at €900 and will be available in Silver Violet and Midnight Blue when it goes on sale on October 26. It will ship with a protective case and a pair of 3.5mm wired earphones. There is no info on the price of the M-Pen and the gamepad.
