Unlike traditional flat smartphone screens, it is challenging to install a fingerprint scanner and camera on flexible screens.

Any hole for sensors can compromise the structural integrity of these devices, causing microscopic cracks and damage over time from moisture. So you still get a side mounted fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy Z series of foldables. However, Samsung might deal with this with its newly patented technology. The new display tech houses microscopic wires and sensors to form a “sensing loop” around the display cutouts, which could help detect any small cracks or issues with this area.

This system can then activate a reinforcement process by triggering “dummy metal patterns” that automatically seal and bolster the affected section. In contrast, Apple is developing new ways to track respiratory health using the iPhone and Apple Watch. One method involves using the iPhone’s optical sensor to track chest movements during breathing. Algorithms would then interpret the motion to determine respiratory characteristics.

Another method involves attaching an Apple Watch to the chest area with a dedicated adhesive sticker. The watch would then be able to directly monitor breathing mechanics from this vantage point.

The Cupertino based giant was granted a patent that describes AirPods that feature tiny electrodes all over the earbuds. These electrodes would allow it to read various biosignals. In the patent document, the company showcased the placement of tiny electrodes all over the housing of both its wired and wireless earphones. Furthermore, these future AirPods will also house both active and reference electrodes that might need to be configured individually for a user’s ear.

These biosignal measurement devices might also be placed at the tip of the earpods. The patent shares some images that reveal how the user can tap on the side to start off the electroencephalography or other forms of measurement. It is worth noting that this is still just a patent. In other words, the future AirPods with brain wave reading technology might not be arriving anytime soon.

Apple has a lot of work going forward since putting small electrodes on AirPods isn’t exactly a simple task. The brand could simply be covering all bases and might not actually be working on such a hearable product. In late September 2019, Xiaomi unveiled an interesting concept smartphone called Mi Mix Alpha. This device had a surround display offering the highest screen-to-body ratio on a phone.

In fact, the company even produced some units and sent them out to a select few media houses. Unfortunately, it was never mass-produced for consumers.

Almost four years later, Xiaomi patents a new smartphone design similar to the Mi Mix Alpha. Let’s go through the details.

According to IThome, Xiaomi has filed a design patent with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). This design somewhat resembles the Mi Mix Alpha from 2019.

The new surround screen smartphone design by Xiaomi is a bit different from Mi Mix Alpha. The rear part has a larger non-display area and it is located at the center rather than the left.

Further, all the cameras are located underneath the screen. It has got a single front-facing camera in the top left corner. Whereas, the triple rear cameras are vertically aligned on the left-sided back display.

A SIM card slot, a USB Type-C port, and a speaker grille are present at the bottom side. Whereas, the top consists of another speaker grille and two holes that are probably meant for microphones. Finally, the capacitive power and volume keys can be found on the left edge.

Xiaomi is known to unveil interesting products during its anniversary events in August. Perhaps, the company may announce this design concept at this year’s conference or we may never see it officially like several other design patents.

Rather than confronting the Chinese manufacturers directly, Samsung Display opted to target importers.
