The company had announced the new RK3588 series chipset back in 2020, which is a flagship grade processor for AIoT products. Notably, Rockchip has released this new chip that will be featured in 8 different fields of applications. Furthermore, the exhibition area for the chipset, showcased the RK3588 in around 200 terminal products that also feature other Rockchip solutions like security, education, office, smart home, even industrial applications, and more. The company is also joining hands with 21 other partner brands as well, which include some industry veterans and other big names.

For those unaware, Rockchip is a known Chinese fabless semiconductor based company. It has been selling its SoC for tablets, PCs, IoT based products, and more. Additionally, the new RK3588 succeeds the RK3399Pro as the flagship SoC and is also based on the ARM architecture. Although, the chipmaker also added that the semiconductor industry is still facing material shortages, which will affect the overall production capacity as well. On the other hand, the company has also announced that some of its new chips will also take on the popular Metaverse concept, with some of its products being made for VR.

Keeping that in mind, Rockchip has today introduced a new processor — Rockchip RK3399Pro, which comes optimized for artificial intelligence technology.

Just like the original RK3399 chipset, which was launched in early 2016, this one too comes with two Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. It is coupled with high-end Mali-T860 GPU which according to the company, integrates more bandwidth compression techniques for improved overall performance.

This is the first AI processor from the company to come with CPU, GPU and NPU hardware structure. According to the company, it offers superior general computing performance as it adopts big.LITTLE CPU. The computing performance of its NPU (Neural Network Processing Unit) reaches 2.4TOPs.

It supports dual Type-C interfaces; dual ISPs, with each channel supporting up to 13 megapixels; 4096 x 2160 pixels (4K) display output; 8-channel digital microphone arrays input, among others. As for the software, RK3399Pro supports numerous APIs, including OpenGL ES 1.x/2.x/3.1/3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 1.1/1.2, RenderScript, etc.

Rockchip is also providing one-stop AI solution based on RK3399Pro, including hardware reference design and Software Development Kit (SDK) to help device manufacturers reduce product launch time. The company believes that its offering will greatly lower the threshold of innovation and commercial mass production and accelerate the overall popularization of AI with higher performance and lower power consumption.

Other chipset manufacturers who have jumped the bandwagon of artificial intelligence-based processors include Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple and Huawei. Budget chipset maker MediaTek has also revealed that its next-gen Helio P-series processors will focus on AI and facial recognition.

The wearable device is more popular after CES 2014 in Las Vegas, it’s seems, one of the chip maker company Rockchip is showing off a few concepts for wearable devices featuring its low-power ARM-based chips.

Rockchip is now also ready to producing smartwatch after they already showing off the smartwatch concept in CES 2014, not only that, they also release the Smart glasses and ready to compete with Google Glass in the market soon.

While for now, there is no detail information about the release date, but bith device has been showing of as a concept wearable device in Rockchip boot at CES 2014, both device will be powered by their own Rockchip processor.

The Rockchip’s smart glasses is too bulky and not too comfortable for user, but seems this device is still on conceptstage, so we hope that Rockchip is change their smart glasses design in finishing version for end-user.
Rockchip is also entering the wearable device
The Smart glasses is poered by Rockchip RK3168 ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, sports with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and has a 1280 x 720 pixel display. The smart glasses is equipped with 802.11n WiFi, Bluetoth 4.0, and running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS.

As same as other smart glasses device, this version is also has camera, microphone, and poering by 570mAh battery as well as a gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, light and proximity sensors.

Unfortunately, Rockchip didn’t provide detailed specs for its smartwatch, but that also appears to be running an Android-based operating system that’s been customized for a small, wearable display.

CES or also known as Consumer Electronic Show 2014 that already held in Las vegas on January 6th 2014 will becoming the nice event for consumer who want to update their gadget, and one of the chipmaker, Rockchip, this event will use to introduncing their new products.

Rockship is now preparing their first Smart Glasses device, according the Rockchip CMO’s Chen Feng, he said at his microblogging account, they will unveiled the new smart glasses that powered by RK3168 chipset, at CES 2014.

The Smart glasses will powered by RK3168 dual-core processor, running at 1.6GHz clockspeed, and sports with 1GB of RAM and 4GB flash memory. It integrates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS chip connected to the three upper side, there is a right lens glasses close less than 1.5 inch display screen, the screen and then to the right is a 5 megapixel 1080p camera and stereo speaker output. There are a lot of App icons, small glasses guess this can be installed App, should be customized based on the Android system.

This devices is different with Google glasses. While the Google Glasses is powered by Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB flash memory, integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB three connections chips and a variety of sensors. Google glasses screen and Rockchip glasses almost great, but it takes projection mode display with a resolution of 640 x 360. It’s on the right side of the screen is a 5 megapixel camera with 720p USB port.

Google glasses can bone conduction via the built-in headset or a USB port to connect the headset to receive the sound emitted by the glasses, and the Rockchip smart glasses directly using the speaker mode. Difference between the two sound output, which led to their use in different occasions. For example, we can use the Google Glasses answer the phone, listen to music, but it is certainly not appropriate Rockchip glasses.

After Google released Android 4.4 KitKat, many phones already upgrade their OS to this version, and the domestic tablet device is also ready to adopt this operating system and the domestic tablet device that uses Rockchip RK3026 dual core, manufacturers RK3188 quad-core chip solution, such as Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus, five elements, PIPO, is also ready to upgrade their system to upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Test platform:

One, full of feeling good

Compared to the previous Android system, the relatively large changes in 4.4. First, the status bar and virtual buttons into a transparent state, and to maintain a faint gradient effect. A place close to the border around the black edges designed background (very fine), the center gradually diverge transparent. Virtual button white vacuum, so beautiful and eye-catching mix. The default is three: back, home, task manager. Screenshot open in the settings themselves. I think this program has two advantages: ① reduce light leakage around the sense of the display, ② certain procedures to better vision without being blocked toolbar.

4.4 drawer, leaving only the icon of all programs, cancel the first two generations of the drawer? Actually no, but for a place only. Long press on the desktop, out of the secondary menu. Which include: the wall paper , small tools, settings.

Rather strange that not all settings set, but named “Search and sticky notes” of the project, specifically the four items pictured above. Another long press the desktop, but also to switch between desktops primary and secondary pages, easy management page.

In the unlock screen, retains the graphical unlock, face unlock, etc. and of course the most common slide to unlock. Android 4.2 touch sliding unlock wave does not change, there is a small tool to unlock the interface which can be customized. Whether or unlock the interface into the system can open the drop-down menu: Message Bar + set the bar.

We have seen, because it is testing the prototype, I think the system is also the initial commissioning, it is normal that some are not perfect. For example, the system language is English, after trying to find out is to adjust to Simplified Chinese, indicating that Android 4.4 is the inclusion of the Chinese package.

After adjusting for the very familiar look again relevant information. The version number is displayed rk30sdk-eng 4.4 …… prove that the firmware from Rockchip chip solution provider.

Second, the built-in domestic non-castrated complete Google+

Only one pre-installed software, I later added a pea pod, search dogs and other software, barely reached two, so the number is not that much. When installing pea pod is through data cable to connect pc, automatic safety up the middle will be prompted to first open usb debugging, allowing unknown programs and other “international practice” did agree to. Enter the pea pods in a little problem: Although Android 4.4 is included Chinese, Chinese can also be displayed, but only the English input method, therefore it downloaded Sogou input method.

Required “active” after the “Settings” for proper use.

Google+ will integrate Google’s online products as the basis for a complete social network. In order for service is different from Facebook, Google will bet on one aspect: better privacy management, which is the soft underbelly of Facebook; course, in the past, Google’s privacy but also weaknesses.
Google+ friends and acquaintances of the center point of the “circle (Circles)”, the user can organize contacts in different circles, such as family members, colleagues, university students, etc., and share photos in a small circle, video, and other information.

Comes with a google erth panoramic maps from the Earth began to zoom into specific locations. Recommended a number of Chinese tourist cities in the options, feel the general effect.

Third, the application of surprises and more personalized features a very avant-garde

Support low-power sensor support Pacer pedometer , exercise anytime, anywhere. 4.4 system in this regard is to spend some thought. I think this feature will definitely be more small-size tablet . I also tried it out of curiosity. Playing basketball together before a buddy child’s Tyrant gold basketball shoes can be docked, so after analyzing the data, such as: How many times jump, the highest number of cm, ran a number of meters, the number of calories consumed. After Android users can enjoy the same, and the use of very low threshold.

The system comes with a music player too times, only to achieve “out loud” requirement, so I downloaded every day sounds. Whether in the interface, EQ settings, be far better than the former sort finishing.

The most important is not the problem, Android 4.4 improved, increased lock screen album art display and playback controls. As the figure above, it becomes unlocked four directions, {after} the front left and right to control one, it controls the pause (play), so that in case it does not unlock the direct control of the music played.

Everyday sounds with dynamic replacement cover (album cover all wake up the screen every time replacement, even if the same song in a dynamic transformation), as well as the lyrics scroll, really beautiful and practical.

Four, Android office no longer tasteless

Picture browsing and playing the same songs, all with a lot of settings, edit. 4.4 added a new document processing software: Quickoffice. DTG commonly used than before on a more refined features, making it possible to commercially Android. Integrated interface contains WORD, EXCEL, PPT.

In the usual work and study, the use of the Android platform to better processing documents, spreadsheets, regardless of location space constraints. Into an additional 4.4 also supports wireless cloud print (documents, images, web pages) to add storage access framework functions, user management file.

In the camera, the 4.4 also made some fine-tuning. Panoramic photographs, video summed together. The shutter is a large round blue screen buttons, eye-catching and easy to operate. Advanced settings collections in the right shutter.

Another method to open the advanced settings are: single finger press the space in the camera interface. At this point the pop option, further sliding through the fingers, the direction of bias which option opens. There are location, countdown, picture size, shooting mode options.

The domestic flat, with a quad-core Rockchip RK3188 product, browse the web, as well as 1080P decoding playback, the effect is very smooth, rapid response.

Android 4.4 also made a multimedia optimization, support for screen recording capabilities, support for low-power audio processing, up to 60 hours of music playback time, improve 50% WiFi Display compatible Miracast certification. Regular pen by actual experience, the music playback time is indeed very impressive, compared with similar products in the past, fully raised several orders of magnitude, great power optimization.

V. Summary

In fact, the most fundamental optimized Android 4.4, that from now on be known as the world’s most fluent system, it can be as low as 512M of memory to run smoothly on the use of ART replace Dalvik, improve application speed. RenderScript computing optimization, enhance graphics rendering capability of 1.6 times.

Mali T760 GPU is a device aimed at the high end model. The GPU offers a level of energy efficiency 4 times more better than the Mali T604 GPU. In addition it also offers a number of more core for GPU, which is 16 cores.

While the Mali T720 is intended for devices in the middle segment. It won’t exactly offering bleeding edge performance. But ARM says the new T720 GPU is 150 percent more efficient than Mali-400 graphics and offers a 50 percent performance boost.

Both GPU is also supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and DirectX 11. And apparently, both GPU is built to provide better performance and offers a high power efficiency.

Rockchip, the one of semiconductor company from China is now ready to release more chipset that attract more tablet manufacturer after MediaTek has been a success story in the mobile processor industry. Is Rockchip ready to beat MediaTek in mobile processor market?

We don’t want to make a conclusion for now, but it’s seems that Rockchip is entered into the tablet market by supplying processors to manufacturers from China and Taiwan. Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Toshiba are among the manufacturers working on Rockchip based tablets.

While another tablet manufacturer such as Asus and Acer is also ready to using Rockchip processor for their products in near future.

With many products using low-budget mobile chips from MediaTek, Rockchip and Allwinner like today, it’s seems potentially to threat to the existence of Qualcomm and NVIDIA chipset products in emerging markets in the future. So what do you think?
