Apparently, the Chinese tech giant has an announcement to make tomorrow about the Redmi Note 8 as the post ends with the words “see you tomorrow”. No, the company isn’t likely planning to announce the Note 8 tomorrow. Rather, Redmi may announce the launch date of the Redmi Note 8. Lei Jun has already hinted at an August 29 launch date. Xiaomi launched the premium Redmi Note 7 alongside the Redmi Note 7 Pro on February 28 in India. The Redmi Note 7 was billed to go on sale yesterday (March 6) and it did go on sale. As was expected, the first sale didn’t even last for long before all units were sold out. Xiaomi’s India head Man Jain has revealed via a tweet that the Chinese tech giant had produced over 200,000 unit of the model since production commenced in India till date. He also disclosed that all 200K+ units were sold out in just a few minutes.

Along with the Redmi Note 7 Pro, at its launch event in New Delhi, Xiaomi has also launched the Redmi Note 7 smartphone in the Indian market. The phone was first introduced in China last month after Redmi split from Xiaomi to run independently.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is priced at Rs. 9,999 (approximately $141) for the 3GB RAM model while the 4GB RAM model costs Rs. 11,999 (approximately $169). Both the models will be available for purchase in India from 6th March, exclusively through online marketplace Flipkart and Mi.com. It will be available in three color options – Onyx Black, Ruby Red, and Sapphire Blue.

Just like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, this one too follows Xiaomi‘s new “Aura Design” philosophy. The glass-bodied smartphone features a 2.5D curved glass on both the sides, protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

It features a 6.3-inch Full-HD+ “dot notch” display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and 409ppi pixel density. Under the hood, it packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor, clocked at 2.2 GHz and coupled with Adreno 512 GPU.

You should not go for the Samsung Galaxy M20 if you are looking for the most attractive design. Instead, I would choose the Honor 10 Lite because it has a cleaner design and a more unique look. First of all, it comes with a very small dewdrop notch. And it even has a stunning glass back available in gradient hues, with a very small surface for cutouts. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has a lower screen-to-body ratio and I consider it less attractive, but it definitely comes with better build quality. Indeed, it has the Gorilla Glass 5 protection as well as water resistance.

Display

I like slightly more the display of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 because it should be more resistant and it comes with a small notch and a slightly bigger diagonal than Honor 10 Lite. The PLS TFT technology of the Samsung Galaxy M20 does not convince me too much and I prefer IPS displays due to its viewing angles and good brightness. However, do not expect a noticeable difference between these displays. Despite we choose a winner for the display comparison, you should not choose one of these mid-rangers considering the display as one of the most important things.

Specs & Software

The challenge is between the Honor 10 Lite and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 because I define their hardware departments slightly better than Samsung Galaxy M20. While the Kirin 710 chipset offers solid performances in everyday use, Snapdragon 660 is definitely more powerful when it comes to games and graphics apps due to its better GPU. I would personally go for the Honor 10 Lite at least in its most expensive configuration because it comes with up to 128 GB of internal storage. But soon Xiaomi should launch a Pro version of Redmi Note 7 with 128 GB of storage that will be superior. Note that Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Honor 10 Lite have Android Pie out of the box, while Galaxy M20 is still based on Oreo.

Camera

Given that it was made official just a few days ago, we still did not try the rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy M20. But we can say that the 48 MP sensor of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is superior on the paper and it should be a lot better in most of the scenarios. The rear department of the Galaxy M20 comes at the second place. Instead, if you are looking for a selfie-centric device, then Honor 10 Lite is the best choice for you thanks to its great 24 MP shooter with AI-backed features.

Battery

Battery life is the strongest point of the Samsung Galaxy M20 which can last more than two days of intensive usage thanks to its 5000 mAh lithium unit. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 remains one of the most incredible phones when it comes to battery life thanks to its 4000 mAh battery, but it does not reach the Galaxy M20. Honor 10 Lite is average.

Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 7 smartphone recently and it was put on sale for the first time on January 15. Records show that the device was sold out in just about 8 minuteswith all 100,000 units exhausted in that short space. The flagship-killer Redmi Note 7 will go on sale again on January 18 and reservations for the sale is ongoing. The reservation page on Jingdong (JD.com) shows that over 400,000 persons have indicated interests to grab the device when it goes on sale.

Unfortunately, we doubt if the available stock will be enough to cater for all those who made reservations. It’s unlikely that all of those who made reservations will show up for the flash sale, though. Xiaomi had earlier hinted that it will make available up to 1 million units of the Redmi Note 7 to buyers this January. That amount may be getting exhausted already if we are to piece together all the units sold on Mi.com, Jingdong, and other online stores in China during the first sale and this upcoming flash sale. Xiaomi is yet to announce when the device will be coming to India and other regions of the world.

As a reminder, the Redmi Note 7 features a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The display carries support for 450-nits brightness, 1,500:1 contrast ratio, sun legibility, and eye protection mode. Camera

The best camera side belongs to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. It is equipped with the new Samsung’s sensor sporting a resolution of 48 MP and a secondary 5 MP depth sensor. It provides a stunning detail in photos for a midrange, as well as low levels of noise in low-light conditions. The Redmi Note 7 is proving to be a highly cost-effective smartphone with impressive hardware. The focus has no doubt been on the 48MP Samsung sensor at the rear but that isn’t the only feature of the device which will tickle fan’s fancy. A video has appeared on Weibo showing the Redmi Note 7’s screen undergoing several extreme tests.

The new Redmi device is shown in the video while being subjected to different extreme tests to prove the display screen is durable. The screen was used to crack walnuts, then was smashed with the heel of the lady’s shoes severally. In addition, the screen was struck repeatedly on the table and then slammed with a rolling pin for kneading, yet the screen didn’t crack. During the Redmi Note 7’s launch event, Xiaomi disclosed that the device features a “rock solid and diamond-like” durable body. That’s because the handset is fitted with 2.5D Corning Gorilla 5 glass panels with an additional 0.8mm thickness on its front and rear. To protect it from breaking easily, the company also strengthened its four corners and the “microcrack” edge polishing process has increased the sturdiness of the device. Hence, the drop protection performance of the Gorilla glass on the Note 7 is said to be four times stronger than competing glass. The glass also retains optical clarity and touch sensitivity of other previous generations of Gorilla Glass. We’ll have to wait and see if Zack Jerry will get his hands on the Redmi Note 7 any time soon. But then, the device looks like one with a solid build that can stand the test of time and constant usage.

When Huawei launched the Nova 4 last December with a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, we never thought as early as one month later, a handful of new ones would be launched with such large pixel camera. The Redmi Note 7 falls in that category which already has the Hisense U30 and soon the Honor View20. Xiaomi’s independent Redmi brand officially unveiled the Redmi Note 7 yesterday showing a cost-effective, quality model. As always, all aspects of the phone will be subjected to review and here you have the review of the Redmi Note 7’s camera samples as picked up on Chinese blog MyDrivers.

The Redmi Note 7 is promoted heavily with the big 48MP lens and that isn’t surprising. The 48MP sensor is the main camera and is a Samsung ISOCELL GM1 Ultra Clear sensor with a 1/2 inch size. The super-sensing area is second only to the SonyIMX600 sensor used in the Huawei P/Mate series flagship. It is on par with the Sony IMX586 sensor used on the Nova 4. The ultra-high pixels provide more detailed performance for Samsung GM1 products. Moreover, Samsung GM1 also adopts Quad Bayer pixel arrangement, which can combine four 0.8μm pixels into one by four-in-one pixel technology (Pixel binning). A large pixel of 1.6 μm (the output photo becomes 12MP) increases the amount of light entering the camera.

The Samsung ISOCELL GM1 hardware comes with some limitations which makes it necessary for some of the samples to be shot using professional mode when the 48MP sensor is to be deployed. While AI mode is deployed without HDR when the 12MP sensor is in use. Two sets of camera samples were taken for comparison.

For instance, the photo of the giant Starbucks coffee cup. Under the 48MP sensor, the font on the giant Starbucks coffee cup is still clear while it becomes slightly faint when Pixel binning is used to achieve a 12MP sensor. That shows the 48MP sensor gives more attention to details. Pixel binning comes to play when images are to be captured in low light conditions. By combining raw data from four pixels into one, the effective output is a higher amount of light captured, while reducing the noise generated. Without actually artificially boosting the “signal” (amount of light perceived by the sensor, usually done by increasing the ISO), the resulting image is much brighter when Pixel binning is used simply because of the combination of four pixel-data into one.

Checking out the camera samples, the Redmi Note 7 could be said to have the best camera among the thousand yuan smartphones. The night shooting and daylight captures are all awesome. In addition, the AI mode in the camera is also quite user-friendly. When it is detected that the scene is backlit, the shooting options of “Backlight” and “Sketch” will pop up automatically. Even when shooting a Silhouette, the backlight and multi-frame will be synthesized to ensure the silhouette effect is captured.

The media has been awash with rumours of Xiaomi phones both from the newly unbundled flagship Mi brand and the Redmi brand. The company is even expected to announce a new Redmi phone tomorrow and several teasers have been released in that regard. One of the teasers released today called the unknown device “Little King Kong”. The teaser post was reposted by the Mi phone Weibo account and the post seems to suggest that more than one product tomorrow. The post wasn’t specific about the other product(s) that would be launched alongside the Redmi phone which is likely the Redmi Note 7. We can’t even say for sure if it is a smartphone or other smart devices. However, a leaked video of a foldable phone said to be from Xiaomi appeared online recently. The phone’s icons are similar to those of Xiaomi’s MIUI but that can’t be authenticated. Thus, it is difficult to say if the foldable phone is among the products that Xiaomi will show off on January 10. There are rumours that the device will be showcased as well on January 10 but that’s nothing but a rumour.
