LG refrigerators face lawsuit: What’s the compressor issue?

An ongoing issue with LG refrigerators in the US has raised concerns about potential implications in other major markets like India, where LG fridges are popular. According to HouseDigest, this issue has sparked controversy due to faulty linear compressors, leading to frequent failures despite advertised long lifespans. Therefore, it is worth examining what’s happening in the US to understand potential implications elsewhere.

Understanding the LG Refrigerator Issue in the US

LG refrigerator with linear compressor

Numerous consumers have experienced their refrigerators malfunctioning after just a few years of use. From failed ice makers to complete cooling system breakdowns, the complaints are consistent and troubling. Even with warranty coverage, many individuals are left footing hefty bills for repairs, with the frustration compounded by the uncertainty of whether the replacement parts will last.

A class action lawsuit against LG Electronics alleges that some of its refrigerators, equipped with linear compressors, are failing to cool properly within 36 months of purchase. This widespread issue has led to significant consumer inconvenience and financial burden, prompting legal action to hold LG accountable for the alleged defects. Affected consumers are awaiting resolution and seeking compensation for the malfunctioning appliances.

Attorneys representing the plaintiffs argue that the issue extends far beyond isolated cases, pointing to the significant number of complaints they’ve received nationwide. They assert that LG’s linear compressors do not live up to the promised durability, despite the company’s claims of a 10-year warranty and 20-year lifespan.

While LG has settled previous litigation over refrigerator defects, it is now facing new accusations of fraud in the latest lawsuit.  For consumers who have purchased LG or Kenmore refrigerators post-2018 in the US, there is an opportunity to join the lawsuit and seek recourse for any faulty appliances. With over a hundred plaintiffs already involved, the case is gaining momentum, and the outcome could have significant implications for LG and its reputation in the US market.

The concerns surrounding LG refrigerators with linear compressors, as seen in the US, could potentially extend to other markets like India. It is advisable to research thoroughly, inquire about warranty coverage, and understand the company’s response to compressor-related issues before making a purchase.

What to do if you own an LG fridge with a linear compressor?

If you own an LG fridge with a linear compressor, it is advisable to search online using the model number and serial number along with “linear compressor issues.” This will reveal if others have reported similar problems. Pay close attention to any unusual noises or cooling issues with the fridge. If problems arise, contact LG customer support promptly, even if the warranty has expired. They may still offer assistance given the known issues with these compressors.

Your Favorite Websites Are Becoming Apps! Chrome 124 Lets You Ditch the Browser (Almost)

Remember Chrome Apps, those handy app-like shortcuts to your favorite websites that went bye-bye in 2023? Google‘s replacement is here: Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). PWAs are web apps that blur the line between websites and native apps, offering an app-like experience without needing to download anything from the app store. Now, Chrome Canary takes PWAs a step further by letting you install any website as a desktop app!

One single click on the app icon can now launch the website in its own window

This means you can take any website you visit regularly and turn it into a dedicated app on your desktop. No more hunting for it in your browser tabs – just a single click on the app icon, and the website opens in its own window, ready to use.

Google Chrome

Previously, enabling PWA functionality required tinkering with flags. But with the latest Canary update, a new “Install page as app…” option appears in the “Save and share” menu. Clicking it creates a dedicated app window for the website. Existing PWAs like YouTube will even display their name (“Install YouTube”) in the menu.

To try it out, install Chrome Canary and enable these flags:

  • chrome://flags/#web-app-universal-install
  • chrome://flags/#shortcuts-not-apps

This feature is currently in Chrome Canary (an early version of Chrome 124). The stable Chrome version (122) focuses on AI writing and Read Aloud tools for Android. The upcoming stable release (Chrome 123) brings a built-in PDF reader for Android, an Android-style media player for desktops, and enhanced tab group sharing.

Privacy Nightmare or Google’s Worst Enemy? New Phone OS Shakes Up Security

Apostrophy OS (AphyOS) is a new mobile operating system shaking things up in the privacy and security space. Unlike traditional Android, AphyOS ditches Google Mobile Services (GMS) and the Play Store. This means you get more control over your data and avoid intrusive background tracking.

AphyOS utilizes the Android Open Source Project to ensure security

Built on a secure foundation, AphyOS utilizes the open-source Android Open Source Project (AOSP) along with elements from the privacy-focused GrapheneOS project. This combination ensures a strong security core for your device.

AphyOS

Adding another layer of trust, the company behind AphyOS is based in Switzerland, a country known for its strict data privacy laws. Their focus on net neutrality further strengthens their commitment to user transparency.

Currently, AphyOS isn’t available for existing Android devices. Instead, they’re taking a different approach. By partnering with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), they aim to pre-install AphyOS on brand-new smartphones. This strategy targets wider adoption compared to custom ROMs, which require more technical knowledge to install.

Despite being new, AphyOS has already secured partnerships with European OEMs, showcasing promising growth potential. Their vision is to become a major player in the mobile market, prioritizing user privacy and security.

The future of AphyOS looks bright for privacy-conscious users. Overcoming challenges like establishing a new device line will be key to their success. We’ll keep an eye on their progress and update this guide as they announce new partnerships and market expansions.

iPhone 16 Pro’s CAD renders reveal familiar design with a few changes in buttons

New CAD renders of the iPhone 16 Pro offer a fresh glimpse at the upcoming phone’s design, suggesting a familiar look with a few key changes. While some leaks had hinted at a more drastic redesign, these renders, obtained by 91Mobiles, point towards a more iterative approach.

iPhone 16 Pro CAD Render

iPhone 16 Pro CAD Renders Leak

The front of the iPhone 16 Pro appears to retain the Dynamic Island introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro. While this sketch depicts a two-island notch for clarity, the final design might resemble the previous version. The back features a camera bump design consistent with previous iPhones, potentially debunking leaks suggesting a more radical camera layout.

The most intriguing additions come in the form of new buttons. The renders showcase a rumored “Capture Button” located on the left side, potentially replacing the mmWave antenna housing. This button could act as a dedicated camera button, allowing for quick photo and video capture, or offer additional functionality like zoom control. Another possibility is it will act as an AI button, reflecting Apple’s growing focus on artificial intelligence.

iPhone 16 Pro CAD Render

While the “Capture Button” seems like a reliable addition based on reports from 91mobiles and MacRumors, there’s some discrepancy regarding the Action Button introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro. Some leaks suggest a slightly larger Action Button, while others claim Apple scrapped this idea in favor of keeping the same design.

Beyond buttons, the leaks suggest a slight increase in display size for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, going from 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively. This aligns with expectations of thinner bezels for a more immersive viewing experience.

The camera system could also see some notable upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro might borrow the 5X telephoto lens from its bigger sibling, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, offering improved zooming capabilities. Additionally, leaks suggest a 48MP ultra-wide sensor exclusive to the Pro models.

While the design may not be a radical departure, the iPhone 16 Pro appears to offer some interesting refinements. The new buttons, particularly the “Capture Button,” could introduce welcome improvements for photographers and videographers. With a larger display and potentially powerful camera upgrades, the iPhone 16 Pro seems poised to be an iterative but worthy successor.

It’s important to remember that these are leaks, and Apple‘s final design could differ. However, they do provide a compelling look at what to expect from the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro. Earlier this month, 91Mobiles also revealed the CAD renders of the iPhone SE 4 which shows iPhone 14-like design.

Sony LinkBuds 2 design and features revealed in a new leak

Sony is reportedly working on its next generation of earbuds, dubbed the LinkBuds 2. While details are scarce at the moment, a leak from The Walkman Blog (via Aditya Lala) has shed light on what we can expect from these earbuds.

Sony LinkBuds 2 Specifications (Rumored)

Most notably, the leak suggests the upcoming LinkBuds may include noise-cancellation technology. This is a surprising development considering the distinctive “open ring” design of the LinkBuds. Such a design allows earbuds to filter in external sound naturally.

If the rumors are true, Sony must have found an innovative way to integrate noise cancellation with this unconventional design.

They have also appeared on the Korean RRA certification, which revealed the image of the earbuds. And it looks like Sony isn’t abandoning the core appeal of the LinkBuds design.

The charging pins and driver holes appear slightly modified now. But the earbuds still retain the open-ring structure of its predecessor.

The leak further says the LinkBuds 2 will have an “elevated audio experience” with sound quality potentially on par with the Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds. The LinkBuds 2 are also said to use the same MediaTek MT2833 chipset as in the WF-1000XM5.

Regarding colors, while the regulatory filing showcases the black variant of the earbuds, leaks indicate there might also be a light gray option available. Currently, details about battery life are under wraps. But the original LinkBuds offers around five-and-a-half hours of run time per charge.

Moreover, there’s also no official word on when the Sony LinkBuds 2 will arrive. However, since it has started appearing on regulatory filings the launch could be on the horizon. Sony LinkBuds and LinkBuds S were launched in 2022, so this is an due upgrade for Sony’s earbuds lineup.

To enhance the user experience, the monitor also features FlickerFree technology, which will reduce eye strain, as well as dark picture compensation technology for improved visibility in darker scenes.

Unfortunately, ViewSonic has not disclosed official details regarding the monitor’s brightness or color gamut capabilities. On the bright side, there is support for HDR and also the Adaptive Sync technology to reduce frame rate stuttering and screen tearing while playing games.

Xiaomi 15 leak points to potential price increase

After the release of Xiaomi’s 14 series smartphones, anticipation is now growing for the company’s next flagship, the Xiaomi 15. Even though it’s not expected to debut until late 2024, early leaks and rumors are hinting at potential changes for the device, including a possible price increase.

Recent reports from well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station suggest that the Xiaomi 15 could be priced higher than its predecessor, the Xiaomi 14.

Xiaomi 15 price

The Xiaomi 14 was launched in China with a starting price of CNY 3,999 (~ $563)  for the base 8GB/256GB storage variant. If we take these leaks into account, we can expect the Xiaomi 15 to be priced at over $600 in China.

While the reasons for this speculated price hike are not confirmed, it’s possible that the increase could be due to upgraded components and features.

The Xiaomi 15 is rumored to come with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. Qualcomm has officially confirmed that this chip will include their custom Oryon CPU cores and is expected to have an improved NPU. Consequently, using this chip from Qualcomm might result in a higher cost compared to the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

Moreover, the smartphone is said to feature a top-tier OLED CSOT LTPO display with a 1.5K resolution and impressive peak brightness. Additionally, there are speculations about upgrades to the camera module and improved battery efficiency. All these upgrades could potentially drive up the phone’s price.

These leaks offer early insights into what we might expect from the Xiaomi 15. However, it’s important to remember that information regarding price and specifications is still speculative. We’ll need to wait for more details to get a clearer picture.

China’s Radio Certification doesn’t give any specific details about the smartphone. However, Geekbench listings provide information about the device’s processor configuration.

The chip consists of a 3.4GHz Cortex-X4 core, three 2.85GHz Cortex-X4 cores, and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A720 cores. The GPU is listed as an Immortalis-G720 MC12, clocked at 1300 MHz.

Though the SoC core CPU architecture resembles that of the Dimensity 9300, there’s a difference in the primary core’s clock speed, which is 3.25GHz for the Dimensity 9300. This suggests it could be an upgraded version of the Dimensity 9300.

According to Weibo tipster WhyLab, the processor could be the Dimensity 9300+ which is expected to launch in April.

Based on this estimated processor release, the tipster suggests that the Vivo X100S Pro could see a launch sometime in late April or early May. It’s possible the device will debut alongside the Vivo X100 Ultra smartphone.

Previous reports have hinted at some specifications of the smartphone. It’s said to offer 100W wired fast charging and runs on a 5,000mAh battery.

There’s also speculation that the phone might include a short-focus optical in-display fingerprint scanner, along with a metal frame and a glass rear panel.

However, apart from these details, we currently lack further information about the smartphone. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated on any new developments.

Samsung’s Snapdragon X Elite powered Galaxy Book 4 Edge shines in Geekbench benchmark

Samsung recently introduced its Galaxy Book 4 series globally, but there seems to be another exciting reveal on the horizon. A mysterious newcomer, the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge, has popped up on the Geekbench benchmarking platform, offering some exciting details about the upcoming device.

Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge Geekbench benchmark

Surprisingly, the Galaxy Book 4 Edge packs Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite processor paired with 16GB of RAM and runs Windows 11 Home (64-bit).

The benchmark not only confirms that Samsung will be partnering with Qualcomm on laptops but also indicates that the company may not yet be ready to deploy its own Exynos chips for larger devices. It is likely a wise move, given Samsung’s current focus on refining the Exynos line for smartphones.

The Galaxy Book 4 Edge with Snapdragon X Elite achieved impressive Geekbench 6.2.2. scores: 2,706 points in single-core and a whopping 12,646 points in multi-core tests.

While these figures of the Snapdragon X Elite clearly outperform Apple’s M1 and M2 chips, it falls short against the newer M3 (excluding the M Pro line).

ChipSingle-coreMulti-core
Apple M123348316
Apple M225899742
Apple M3318115620
Book4 Edge (X Elite)270612646

However, making a direct comparison between the Snapdragon X Elite and Apple’s M-series chips is a bit tricky in itself. The inherent differences between Windows 11 on ARM and MacOS make it difficult to gauge real-world performance solely based on benchmarks.

Apple’s excellent software optimization for its M-chips gives it an edge over any other PC device. So it remains to be seen if Qualcomm and Microsoft can achieve similar synergy.

Rumors also hint that Qualcomm’s new chip will find its way into Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10. This would position Samsung as a direct competitor to Microsoft’s established Surface line.

Nevertheless, it’s surprising to see Samsung placing trust in Qualcomm for a new addition to its premium laptop lineup, particularly considering Qualcomm’s relatively recent entry into the consumer PC chip market.

Huawei Outsmarts US Chip Ban? Report Claims Breakthrough Chip Made with US Technology

Despite US restrictions on supplying advanced chip technology to China, Huawei managed to develop a more powerful chip for its Mate 60 Pro smartphone using technology from US companies.

An earlier report mentioned SMIC using ASML’s tech in the past

Reports from Bloomberg indicate Huawei, along with its chip manufacturing partner SMIC, utilized technology from California-based Applied Materials and Lam Research to create a 7-nanometer chip. While not the most cutting-edge chip available, it surpasses what the US intended for its competitor in the ongoing chip war. This news comes after a previous Bloomberg report in October 2023 mentioned SMIC using technology from Dutch company ASML for another advanced Huawei chip.

Crucially, SMIC reportedly acquired the US technology before the US Department of Commerce implemented a ban in October 2022. This ban restricted US companies from supplying advanced chipmaking equipment and chips to Chinese firms. Further US restrictions in November 2022 prohibited the approval of equipment sales to Huawei and other Chinese companies, citing national security concerns.

While the US Commerce Department hasn’t found evidence of SMIC mass-producing these advanced chips, Huawei enjoyed strong initial demand for its Mate 60 series in the first six weeks of 2024. During this same period, Apple‘s iPhone sales in China dropped a significant 24% year-over-year, though overall smartphone sales in China fell by 7%.
