UK Electric Car Sales Jump 14% in October as Compared to Last Year

The UK is hitting the fast lane when it comes to adopting electric cars. In a striking uptick, October saw a 14% jump in new passenger car registrations compared to last year, totaling an impressive 153,529 vehicles. It’s clear that the Brits are charging ahead with 15 months of continuous growth, and a noteworthy 20% increase in new car registrations over the past ten months.

Last month alone, over 38,000 plug-in vehicles were registered

Electric cars, the spark plugs of the industry, are gaining ground even faster, capturing a growing piece of the pie. Last month alone, 38,228 plug-in vehicles were registered, up 33% from the previous year, and now represent nearly a quarter of all new cars hitting the roads.

Tesla Model 3

Digging a bit deeper, all-electric (BEV) models have enjoyed a remarkable 42 months of uninterrupted growth, with 23,943 new registrations marking a 20% increase from last year. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) aren’t lagging, racing ahead with a 61% surge to 14,285 vehicles. It seems the UK’s appetite for electric is insatiable, with a record-setting deployment of 4,753 new AC charging points in the last quarter to keep these cars running.

While BEVs are certainly in the driver’s seat, claiming a 15.6% market share, PHEVs are not far behind at 9.3%. Together, they’ve charged up the market, contributing to over 375,000 new eco-friendly vehicles on UK roads this year – that’s a solid 35% increase.

Despite this electric boom, none of the standalone all-electric models have cracked the top 10 monthly bestsellers – a testament to the stiff competition in the market. Tesla’s Model Y, however, remains a popular choice, sitting comfortably in the top 10 year-to-date rankings.

In the commercial sector, electric vans are trailing the passenger segment but have shown an 18% growth. This mirrors a global trend where commercial electric adoption is a bit slower off the mark.

China’s Baidu Strikes a Deal with Huawei to Buy AI Chips

Baidu, the country’s web search giant, has chosen to buy a batch of homegrown AI chips from Huawei Technologies. Amidst the political pressures and trade constraints from the US, this deal shows a pivot towards local tech solutions, a trend that could reshape the tech landscape.

An order of 1600 chips has been placed, estimated at around $61 million

With an order of 1,600 of Huawei’s Ascend 910B AI chips, Baidu is preparing for a future less reliant on foreign technology, specifically Nvidia’s AI chips, which have been the industry’s gold standard. The deal, estimated at around 450 million yuan ($61.83 million), is modest compared to the massive orders usually placed with Nvidia, but it’s the significance that counts here – it’s a step towards technological self-sufficiency for China.

baidu

Previously, Baidu wasn’t known to use Huawei’s AI chips, making this a noteworthy partnership. Although Huawei’s chips aren’t yet on par with Nvidia’s in performance, they represent the most advanced AI chips China has to offer. This shift isn’t just about Baidu’s preference; it’s a response to stringent US rules that have barred Nvidia from selling some of its top AI chips to Chinese companies.

The collaboration between Baidu and Huawei isn’t new. They have been working together since 2020, making Baidu’s AI platforms run smoothly on Huawei’s hardware. Even though Baidu has its own line of Kunlun AI chips, the reliance on Nvidia’s technology has been significant until the US restrictions prompted a change in strategy.

While analysts see US restrictions as a door opening for Huawei to claim more of the domestic market, the question remains: Can China accelerate its chipmaking prowess to not just compete but lead in the tech arena? This deal might just be a glimpse into a future where China’s tech independence is not just an aspiration but a reality.

China is Suffering from Lack of AI Experts Amidst Growing Artificial Intelligence Industries

In China, a gap is growing in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry that could shape its tech future. For every five AI positions opening up, only two people are ready to fill them. This talent crunch is getting serious attention as Chinese tech giants hustle to make their own versions of smart tech like ChatGPT.

Companies like ByteDance, Alibaba are hungrily on the look for AI Experts

Big names in tech like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent are in a tight race. They want to be the first to bring new AI tools to the market. ByteDance is leading the pack, hiring the most AI pros in the past three years.

Artificial Intelligence

Jobs in AI are like gold in China’s tech world, with ByteDance, Meituan, and others all on the hunt for the best minds. But there’s a problem: there aren’t enough skilled people to go around. It’s a tough spot for job seekers looking to land a good role in a tough job market.

The buzz around AI has made these jobs well-paid, too. AI experts can make more than twice what the average white-collar worker in Beijing earns. It’s not just any AI job that’s in demand—companies want people who can make computers understand and process human language or help self-driving cars get smarter.

ChatGPT, the chatbot from OpenAI, has been a game-changer, and now there’s a premium on folks who can make something like it. They can earn a hefty paycheck, much more than other AI roles.

This hunt for AI talent is mostly happening in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where almost 80% of these jobs are. This shows how the AI industry is really focused in certain areas.

Future Apple iPhones may feature in-house battery tech that could improve battery life

Apple could be planning a major change for its future iPhones. The company might soon shift its smartphones to in-house developed battery, which could offer various improvements in battery performance compared to current iterations.

Apple iPhones may soon be powered by self-developed batteries

According to a South Korean report, the Cupertino based giant is working on developing proprietary battery tech. These cells could be employed on its future generation of iPhones. These handsets would likely be slated to launch in 2025. So the iPhone 16 lineup is unlikely to feature this technology. The report claims that the new Apple batteries for the iPhone will offer major improvements in battery performance.

This would likely be related to the overall battery life or the higher fast charging rate support. The ET News claims that the company is directly involved in the manufacturing of the materials that will be used in the new batteries. Apple will reportedly employ this in-house battery in the 2025 iPhones. Furthermore, the report adds that Apple is looking to improve the performance of cathode materials. The company is apparently also considering Carbon Nanotubes or CNTs as a conductive material for improved performance.

Apple might also plan to increase the silicon content in the cathode materials for its iPhone batteries. For those unaware, a battery houses a cathode and cathode materials. Newer smartphones feature graphite as secondary material, but the iPhone maker could be planning on increasing the silicon content in the cathode materials. This, in turn, could help reduce charging and discharging periods.

Google Pixel Watch 3 may have gesture recognition controls

Google has filed a patent for new smartwatch sensors that could detect gestures such as presses, taps, squeezes, and swipes. The patent, titled “Gesture recognition on watch bezel using strain gauges,” suggests that the next Pixel Watch could have a new way to interact with the device.

The patent filing explains that Google is looking for ways to simplify the design of smartwatches and prevent users from having to obscure the already limited screen real estate. Gesture recognition controls would allow Google to remove buttons and other physical inputs from the design of the Pixel Watch 3, resulting in a cleaner and more streamlined appearance.

The patent also acknowledges that current methods of controlling smartwatches, such as rotating crowns and bezels, have their drawbacks. For example, rotating crowns can be complex and expensive to manufacture, and they can also be difficult to waterproof.

Gesture recognition controls could address these drawbacks, providing a more efficient and reliable way to control smartwatches. Google’s patent suggests that the gesture recognition sensors could be embedded in the housing of the Pixel Watch 3, allowing users to control the device without having to touch the screen.

It is important to note that this is just a patent, and it is not clear whether Google will actually implement this technology in the Pixel Watch 3. However, the patent filing does suggest that Google is exploring new ways to improve the design and functionality of smartwatches.

Steps to Activate Bixby Text Call Feature in India

Bixby Text Call can be easily enabled by heading to iPhone App Settings, below are the steps:

  1. Open the iPhone Settings App, Tap on More Options, and then Tap on Settings.
  2. Now, Toggle the Bixby Text Call Feature, and install the language package it prompts to install.
  3. After downloading the language package, the user can turn on the Bixby Text Call Feature.
  4. Also, add any quick response or customize text for Bixby Text Calls.

After, successful installation and enabling of the Bixby Text Call feature, the user can always tap on the “Bixby Text Call” on the incoming caller UI and then swipe up on the green call icon to initiate the new feature.

New Xiaomi Smart Band, Redmi Note 13 4G, & POCO M6 Pro 4G visit IMDA ahead of launch

Xiaomi is preparing to launch a number of different products from its own branding as well as some of its subsidiaries. This includes a new Xiaomi Smart Band wearable, Redmi Note 13 4G, and POCO M6 Pro 4G, which were also recently spotted getting certified. So here are all the details.

Xiaomi Smart Band, Redmi Note 13 4G, & POCO M6 Pro 4G Launch May be Near

The global release of all three products is expected to be near since these surfaced on Singapore’s IMDA certification. The Chinese tech giant’s upcoming Xiaomi Smart Band was spotted on the online database carrying the model number M2333B1. Apart from the wearable product, the brand is also working on the POCO M6 Pro 4G and Redmi Note 13 4G smartphones.

Xiaomi Smart Band

The former carries the 2312FPCA6G model number, while the latter has a model number of 23117RA68G. These handsets are listed with support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity. On the other hand, the Xiaomi Smart Band was certified as a low power device that features Bluetooth connectivity. Earlier today (7th November 2023), the Redmi Note 13 Pro 4G model and the POCO M6 Pro 4G were certified on the FCC database.

Last month, we even covered a report that claimed that the Redmi Note 13 4G model will be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 SoC. Apple confirms no 27-inch iMac with M3 chip

Apple has confirmed that it will not be releasing a 27-inch iMac with an M-series chip. This comes as a disappointment to some users who were hoping for a larger version of the new 24-inch iMac, which was unveiled last week.

Apple confirms no 27-inch iMac with M3 chip

In a statement to TheVerge, Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza said Apple has no plans to release a new 27-inch iMac with Apple silicon.

From the report:

Apple will not be making an Apple Silicon version of the 27-inch iMac to replace the Intel-equipped model that it discontinued in 2022. The company is instead focusing the iMac line around the 24-inch model that was first released in early 2021 and just updated with the new M3 processor this fall.

For those who think the 24-inch iMac’s screen is too small, Apple recommends pairing a 27-inch Studio Display with a Mac Studio or Mac Mini. However, this means losing the all-in-one integration of an iMac.

This is the first time that Apple has officially commented on rumors of a 27-inch iMac with an M-series chip. The rumors have been circulating for several months, and some analysts have speculated that Apple would release such a device in the near future.

It is unclear why Apple has decided not to release a 27-inch iMac with an M-series chip. One possibility is that the company is focusing on developing a larger all-in-one device with a mini-LED display. Apple is reportedly planning to release a 42-inch OLED iMac in the next few years.

Whatever the reason, the news that Apple will not be releasing a 27-inch iMac with an M-series chip is likely to disappoint some users. However, there are still plenty of other options available for users who need a powerful and stylish all-in-one desktop computer.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 benchmark results are here, and they’re very impressive

MediaTek’s new flagship mobile chip, the Dimensity 9300, is officially out, and it’s a beast! Official benchmark results show that it scores over 2.2 million points on AnTuTu, which is incredibly impressive. Let’s take a closer look at the Dimensity 9300’s specific test scores in this story.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 official benchmark scores: Over 2.2 million points in AnTuTu

In the AnTuTu V10 benchmark, the Dimensity 9300 scored 2.207 million points, making it the first Android chipset to score over 2.2 million points. This outperforms Xiaomi 14 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which currently ranks first in AnTuTu’s October performance list, and the A17 Pro of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro series, by a full 600,000 points.

The Dimensity 9300 is unique in that it features four powerhouse Arm Cortex-X4 cores and four high-performance Cortex-A720 cores, but no efficiency cores.

This gives it a significant performance advantage over other Android chipsets, which typically use a combination of performance and efficiency cores. This means that the Dimensity 9300 is all about performance, and it shows in the benchmarks.

In the GeekBench 6 test, the SoC scored 2265 points in the single-core test and nearly 8000 points in the multi-core test, which is about 4% and 12% ahead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, respectively.

The Dimensity 9300 also features the latest Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU in a 12-core configuration, which outperformed all major competing models in the benchmark test.

Specifically, it scored 4880 points in the BaseMark ray tracing benchmark, 5638 points in the 3DMark Wild Life EXTREME benchmark, 347fps in the GFX 1080P Manhattan 3.1 off-screen test, and 103fps in the GFX 1440P Aztec vulkan off-screen test.

Thanks to its all-performance core architecture and new-generation GPU, the Dimensity 9300 has a significant performance advantage over its competitors. MediaTek also claims that the Dimensity 9300 is up to 33% more efficient than the Dimensity 9200 at the same performance level while offering a 40% improvement in peak performance.

Vivo and Oppo have both confirmed that their upcoming flagship smartphones will be equipped with the new Dimensity 9300 chip. It will be interesting to see how the Dimensity 9300 performs in real-world devices, and how it compares to other flagship chips.
