As of December 1, China is enforcing new regulations requiring all research institutions—including universities, hospitals, and enterprises—to undergo ethics reviews. This development represents a first for China, bringing it to the forefront in establishing guidelines for ethical considerations in fields such as human and animal research, as well as artificial intelligence (AI). Among the areas needing third-party expert verification are algorithmic models with social influence, invasive brain-computer interfaces, and automated decision-making systems affecting health and security.

But what does this mean for the nation’s push towards scientific innovation? On one hand, the new regulations could serve as a much-needed moral compass, especially in a landscape marked by ethical quandaries like the one involving Chinese scientist He Jiankui. He shocked the world by creating gene-edited babies and was later imprisoned for illegal medical practices.

On the other hand, the guidelines could stifle innovation. The formation of an ethics review committee, with a minimum of seven members, could slow down research projects. These committees have the authority to cancel projects, posing a potential roadblock to fast-paced scientific advancements.

The guidelines also cast a wide net over “sensitive research areas,” requiring data and algorithms—integral components of AI development—to undergo the review process. This could impact China’s standing in the global tech race, especially as AI becomes an increasingly critical component in sectors ranging from healthcare to national security.

LG develops essential OLED material domestically to reduce dependency on imports

As we know, LG Display is a prominent player in the global display technology industry. Now according to a recent report from the Korean Herald, LG Display and LG Chem, two major companies, have together created a key material called p-type dopants for OLED screens. Before this, they had to buy it from other countries. This is a big step for LG Display as they are trying to make more OLED parts in their own country. Last year, they increased the amount of materials they got from local suppliers from 58% to 64%.

LG Paves the Way with In-House OLED Material Development

Dopants change how OLEDs work. P-type dopants, one kind of these materials, help OLEDs shine evenly, use less power, and last longer. However, some p-type dopants can be easily damaged by air.

This new achievement is the result of 10 years of teamwork between LG Display and LG Chem. LG Display worked on designing the material, while LG Chem made it. Their new material works as well as the one they used to buy.

Yoon Soo-young, an executive at LG Display, said they’ve been working on making their own core materials since they launched their first big OLED TV in 2013. This new material is even more important for a new kind of OLED that is brighter and lasts longer.

By making their own p-type dopants, LG Display hopes to have a better supply chain, protect their ideas, and stay ahead in the OLED market. As of early 2023, LG had the biggest share in the global OLED TV market, more than Sony and Samsung.

LG Display will use this new material in different sizes of OLED panels in the future. Lee Hyun-woo, another executive at LG Display, said that making and buying materials locally makes them stand out in the OLED market.

This move towards self-reliance and technological advancement in OLED technology is a significant development, especially considering LG’s potential collaboration with Apple. There are reports suggesting that Apple is working with Samsung Display and LG Display to create bezel-less OLED displays for future iPhones.

Features

The B251 has a 25.3-inch screen based on the E-ink Kaleido 3 display. It has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels and features a cold/warm dual front light. The BIGME B251 is unique as it combines both an AIO PC and an E-ink display. It features dual front light and voice control.

As per performance and features, the B251 AIO PC is powered by an unnamed 12th-generation Intel Core i5 Alder Lake processor with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The PC runs on Windows 11 and the display has adjustable image quality. Input ports for the B251 include HDMI, mini HDMI, DP, and USB, while audio is delivered via dual-channel stereo speakers. The E-ink monitor supports Wi-Fi connectivity for screen castings such as Miracast, AirPlay, and Chromecast.

The power supply to the monitor is via a 19V-rated DC jack. The USB ports available on the BIGME B251 are USB-A, USB-B and USB-C. The new monitor is ideal for users who may need to read text or write for long hours. It also offers excellent document editing, stock trading, programming, and browsing experience.

Pricing & Availability

The BIGME B251 is being offered on the Kickstarter campaign for $1,299 but its original price is $1,999. The AIO PC variant of the model starts at $1,899 on Kickstarter but is originally priced at $2,999. The earliest shipments of the model will be done from December 2023. However, the below-par refresh rate regime of the B251 means that it cannot be used as a gaming product.

The CycloTech CycloRotor eVTOL concept aircraft has been launched. The prototype is coming a decade and a half after CycloTech introduced the concept. The CycloTech CruiseUp features propulsion barrels at each corner and lengthways aft and fore of the cabin. The design and operation of the concept air car is similar to a helicopter’s rotor system.

CycloTech CycloRotor-powered eVTOL – Still a product for the future

The CruiseUp is a two-seat eVTOL air car that can accomplish cross-town air trips It is powered by the CycloRotor propulsion system. The spinning barrels surrounding the eVTOL have walls made of wing blades. The wing blades are designed to tilt while the barrels are spinning using conrods connected to the swashplate. The system generates thrust that peaks at certain points of the rotation.

The barrels of the CruiseUp can be maintained at a constant motor speed which then delivers thrust instantly. The complex design of the eVTOL enables it to operate in gravity and in a similar manner to marine operations. Indeed the Voith-Schneider propeller in marine applications is used to help the craft position expertly and stay in one spot if required. It is powered by six CycloRotors which offer power for upward, downward, and lateral movement.

The development of the CycloTech CruiseUp holds promise in opening new vistas in mobility. It is debatable whether the CycloRotor setup will be more efficient and powerful than electric propellers in the eVTOL. Weight and efficiency considerations are important in the turf of air hops, however short it may be. Lithium batteries are the best storage option currently but improvements could be close by.

The new CycloTech prototype air car is designed as a private air car rather than an air taxi. Its agility is one important feature going forward for the 80kg aircraft. It has a top speed of 150km/h and a range of 100km. The outlook for the development of the CruiseUp is pretty steep. CycloTech estimates that the car will become a production model by 2035. Hopefully, by then, the technology would have solved the storage conundrum and other problems facing the concept air car.

Additionally, the device is also expected to offer up to 24GB of RAM.

The device will also include a robust metal frame, an ultra-thin optical fingerprint sensor, dust & water-resistance, a sizable X-axis linear motor for improved haptic feedback, and an efficient VC liquid cooling system.

In terms of pricing, predictions based on historical OnePlus pricing place the OnePlus 12 in the range of 3,000 to 4,000 yuan ($400-$550).

It offers excellent maneuverability on the go allowing you to ride on difficult terrain easily. The new Kilow electric bicycle is as versatile as it can be. Marketing Director at Kilow, Arthur Allamand says that the Gravel offers an alternative to the almost non-existent public transport in the city outskirts. The Bikedrive Air motor on the Kilow Gravel is housed within its carbon fiber frame. While the Bikedrive Air is short on torque and power, it offers smoothness and a natural pedal feel. It has a maximum torque of 40Nm and a 250W continuous power output. There are three pedal assistance modes in the Gravel and this can be alternated via the toptube console. The downtube of the Gravel frame houses the battery which delivers up to 50km of assistance range on a full charge. The bike has a 12-speed Sram Force AXS system with support for electronic shifting and Hutchinson Touareg tires.

Pricing & Availability

The Kilow Gravel electric bicycle costs up to $10,000 or €9,490. It is available for pre-order but expected delivery times have not been stated. There are no global availability details for the Kilow Gravel at this time. Thus its sales are limited to the European Union for now.

Many of you might remember the original OnePlus Watch that launched back in 2021. The new PS5 brings a smaller form factor

Sony says the new PS5 model, often referred to as PS5 Slim, brings the same technology features that make PS5 the best to play packed into a smaller form factor. As per the company, the new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. It has four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte.

Sony now has added a bulge at the side of the PS5 for the disc drive, which can be removed and replaced. Additionally, on each side, there are now two slits, and at the front, instead of the single USB-C and USB-A ports found on the current PS5, you’ll find dual USB-C ports. Sony will include a horizontal stand with the new PS5 model. The company has also introduced a vertical stand, compatible with all PS5 models. But you’ll need to get it separately for $29.99.

In the United States, the PS5 equipped with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be available at a price of $499.99, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $449.99. For European customers, the prices will be set at 549.99 EUR for the standard model and 449.99 EUR for the Digital Edition. In the UK, the standard PS5 will be priced at 479.99 GBP, while the PS5 Digital Edition will cost 389.99 GBP. In Japan, the standard PS5 will be available at 66,980 JPY, and the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at 59,980 JPY.

Samsung urges Apple to adopt RCS in its own snarky way

Google has been taunting Apple for not adopting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol for over a year now. The company even launched a campaign called ‘Get The Message’ to pressure the iPhone maker into adopting the messaging protocol, but Apple didn’t bother to listen. Now, Samsung has joined the search giant in urging the Cupertino company to embrace RCS, and it has done so in its own sarcastic way.

“Help Apple,” says Samsung

Samsung has released a new video on YouTube, which calls for Apple to adopt RCS. The video, titled “Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together,” shows a Romeo and Juliet-style conversation between two users who want to be together, but are kept apart by one of their parents (hinting at Apple’s stubbornness to support RCS in iMessage). “What did green ever do to them? We’re bubbles too,” one of them asks. The touching video from Samsung supports Google’s existing #GetTheMessage campaign.

RCS is supposed to be an upgrade over the existing messaging protocol, SMS, which lacks encryption, group messaging, or animated stickers. RCS chats are meant to give you a rich messaging experience by showing you when someone is typing, offering read receipts, and allowing you to send messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi. You can also share large files and high-resolution photos using RCS. The new protocol is available on all Android phones.

For RCS to be effective, it must be implemented on all smartphones, including iPhones. However, Apple has been reluctant to embrace the new protocol, presumably because the Cupertino company doesn’t want to relinquish its ecosystem lock-in. The tipster suggests that the new iPad Mini may not introduce many significant upgrades in its specifications. The 2021-released iPad Mini 6 features an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and is powered by the A15 Bionic, the same processor found in the iPhone 13. ColorOS 14 x Android 14 beta program live for Oppo Reno 8

Google announced the stable Android 14 build earlier this month and other OEMs soon followed up with announcements of their custom Android skins. Oppo has confirmed it will unveil the latest version of its software skin— ColorOS 14— on November 16. However, the company has already started to beta testing of the new OS on many phones. The latest device to join the program is the Oppo Reno 8. Here are the details.

Reno 8 users get an early look at Android 14

The ColorOS 14 beta program was announced for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ back in August, and now the Reno 8 has also been added to the roster. Oppo is recruiting internal beta testers from China starting today. However, there’s no news about the beta testing extending to the global market.

Currently, the Find X6 Pro, OnePlus 11, Reno 9 Pro, and handful of other Oppo phones are eligible to sign up for ColorOS 14 beta. However, the testing is limited to China. The company even released a detailed schedule earlier today, revealing when major Oppo flagships and mid-rangers will receive the ColorOS 14 beta update. As mentioned, the OS itself will be unveiled on November 16.

Oppo is yet to detail the major changes included in the ColorOS 14 update. Since it is based on Android 14, you can expect it to bring the new features Google introduced. To remind you, Android 14 brings several new features, including native spatial audio support, cross-device copy and paste, and a new media player. The Material You interface has been upgraded and the privacy and security have seen improvements.

As the launch of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip is approaching, smartphone brands around the world are gearing up to launch new devices with the cutting-edge SoC. iQOO is rumored to be working on a new flagship, which will be called the iQOO 12 and will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. That being said, a new leak has revealed when we can expect this smartphone to arrive in India.

As per known tipster Mukul Sharma, the iQOO 12 will be launched in India by November end, or early December. It will be the first smartphone to introduce the SD8 Gen 3 chip in the Indian market.

Leaked information suggests the iQOO 12 will feature an E7 AMOLED panel with a 2K resolution and an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is expected to be coupled with the Adreno 750 GPU for robust performance.

Regarding memory and storage, users can choose between 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Although Google has already launched Android 14, it looks like the iQOO 12 could run on Origin OS 4.0, based on Android 13 out of the box.

A detailed camera leak reveals that the iQOO 12 will have some powerful sensors onboard including a 50MP wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3X optical zoom.

The device is expected to be powered by a 5000mAh battery and supports an impressive 200W fast charging, reducing downtime significantly.

The company aims to change the market dynamics with its record shipment rate, which is twice as much as the previous year. However, the ongoing US sanctions pose a significant disadvantage for the company. Due to 5G restrictions, Huawei had to use 4G modems in Snapdragon processors until recently. However, it recently launched a device with a Kirin 9000S, a 7nm process 5G processor.

Huawei is expected to use the same processor in its upcoming P70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro models. Emerging details suggest that the company has already begun sourcing large quantities of parts for the new smartphones. Recently, Huawei has been making significant progress in both its HarmonyOS operating system and its processors.

However, experts doubt that Huawei can achieve distribution numbers of 60-70 million units under the current US sanctions. Google is after a lofty goal: aiding its partners in cutting down one gigaton of carbon emissions by the end of this decade.

Initially a pilot in four Israeli intersections, the program’s success—a reduction in fuel use and intersection delays by up to 20 percent—led to its expansion to 12 global cities. Locations now include Rio de Janeiro, Manchester, and Jakarta, and Google has plans to broaden its reach in 2024.

Yael Maguire, Google’s VP of Geo Sustainability, said the system is unique in its scalability and cost-effectiveness, suggesting a potential 30% reduction in traffic stops. What’s more, city engineers can start seeing the impact within weeks of implementation. Results from Manchester show emission levels and air quality improving by as much as 18%.

However, an exact date has not yet been revealed. Leading up to the official release, leaks and rumors have already unveiled key details about the upcoming foldable. In the latest development, a report has shared high-resolution images of the OnePlus Open, showcasing its two color options in detail. Let’s take a look.

OnePlus Open could come in two colors

OnePlus Open is essentially the same device as the Oppo Find N3 Fold, which is set to launch in China. The new images shared by Winfuture once again confirm this, as it looks identical to its Oppo counterpart. However, a report from earlier today showcased the Find N3 Fold in a flashy gold color option as well, but the OnePlus Open is only pictured in black and green. You may see the additional shade during the launch.

In the pictures shared by the German publication, the OnePlus Open is featured with a round camera module. We see a triple-camera setup along with a Hasselblad branding. The device also has the signature OnePlus mute switch on one of the sides. The foldable appears to have a compact profile. If previous leaks are to be believed, the OnePlus Open will bring a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display as well as a 6.31-inch panel on the outside.

It might sport the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. In the camera department, you may see a 48MP main camera with another 48MP ultrawide shooter. A 64MP telephoto sensor should also be in the mix. The OnePlus Foldable is expected to debut on October 19. It even leaked in a new hands-on video earlier today.
