Among the areas needing third-party expert verification are algorithmic models with social influence, invasive brain-computer interfaces, and automated decision-making systems affecting health and security.

But what does this mean for the nation’s push towards scientific innovation? On one hand, the new regulations could serve as a much-needed moral compass, especially in a landscape marked by ethical quandaries like the one involving Chinese scientist He Jiankui. He shocked the world by creating gene-edited babies and was later imprisoned for illegal medical practices.

On the other hand, the guidelines could stifle innovation. The formation of an ethics review committee, with a minimum of seven members, could slow down research projects. These committees have the authority to cancel projects, posing a potential roadblock to fast-paced scientific advancements.

LG develops essential OLED material domestically to reduce dependency on imports

Dopants change how OLEDs work. P-type dopants, one kind of these materials, help OLEDs shine evenly, use less power, and last longer. However, some p-type dopants can be easily damaged by air.

This new achievement is the result of 10 years of teamwork between LG Display and LG Chem. LG Display worked on designing the material, while LG Chem made it. Their new material works as well as the one they used to buy.

Yoon Soo-young, an executive at LG Display, said they’ve been working on making their own core materials since they launched their first big OLED TV in 2013. This new material is even more important for a new kind of OLED that is brighter and lasts longer.

By making their own p-type dopants, LG Display hopes to have a better supply chain, protect their ideas, and stay ahead in the OLED market. As of early 2023, LG had the biggest share in the global OLED TV market, more than Sony and Samsung.

LG Display will use this new material in different sizes of OLED panels in the future. Lee Hyun-woo, another executive at LG Display, said that making and buying materials locally makes them stand out in the OLED market.

However, the below-par refresh rate regime of the B251 means that it cannot be used as a gaming product.

In the United States, the PS5 equipped with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be available at a price of $499.99, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $449.99. For European customers, the prices will be set at 549.99 EUR for the standard model and 449.99 EUR for the Digital Edition. In the UK, the standard PS5 will be priced at 479.99 GBP, while the PS5 Digital Edition will cost 389.99 GBP. In Japan, the standard PS5 will be available at 66,980 JPY, and the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at 59,980 JPY.

Samsung urges Apple to adopt RCS in its own snarky way

Google has been taunting Apple for not adopting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol for over a year now. The company even launched a campaign called ‘Get The Message’ to pressure the iPhone maker into adopting the messaging protocol, but Apple didn’t bother to listen. Now, Samsung has joined the search giant in urging the Cupertino company to embrace RCS, and it has done so in its own sarcastic way.

Samsung has released a new video on YouTube, which calls for Apple to adopt RCS. The video, titled “Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together,” shows a Romeo and Juliet-style conversation between two users who want to be together, but are kept apart by one of their parents (hinting at Apple’s stubbornness to support RCS in iMessage). “What did green ever do to them? We’re bubbles too,” one of them asks. The touching video from Samsung supports Google’s existing #GetTheMessage campaign.

RCS is supposed to be an upgrade over the existing messaging protocol, SMS, which lacks encryption, group messaging, or animated stickers. RCS chats are meant to give you a rich messaging experience by showing you when someone is typing, offering read receipts, and allowing you to send messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi. You can also share large files and high-resolution photos using RCS. The new protocol is available on all Android phones.

For RCS to be effective, it must be implemented on all smartphones, including iPhones. However, Apple has been reluctant to embrace the new protocol, presumably because the Cupertino company doesn’t want to relinquish its ecosystem lock-in. While the likelihood of Apple willingly adopting RCS is slim, regulators, such as the EU, might force it to open up its messaging services. That said, you can still try RCS on iPhones using this third party app.

For those unaware, users widely reported a “jelly scrolling” phenomenon on the iPad Mini 6, which caused text or images on one side of the screen to appear tilted downwards (Via MacRumors).

ColorOS 14 x Android 14 beta program live for Oppo Reno 8

Google announced the stable Android 14 build earlier this month and other OEMs soon followed up with announcements of their custom Android skins. Oppo has confirmed it will unveil the latest version of its software skin— ColorOS 14— on November 16. However, the company has already started to beta testing of the new OS on many phones. The latest device to join the program is the Oppo Reno 8. Here are the details.

Reno 8 users get an early look at Android 14

The ColorOS 14 beta program was announced for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ back in August, and now the Reno 8 has also been added to the roster. Oppo is recruiting internal beta testers from China starting today. However, there’s no news about the beta testing extending to the global market.

Currently, the Find X6 ProOnePlus 11,  Reno 9 Pro, and handful of other Oppo phones are eligible to sign up for ColorOS 14 beta. However, the testing is limited to China. The company even released a detailed schedule earlier today, revealing when major Oppo flagships and mid-rangers will receive the ColorOS 14 beta update. As mentioned, the OS itself will be unveiled on November 16.

Oppo is yet to detail the major changes included in the ColorOS 14 update. Since it is based on Android 14, you can expect it to bring the new features Google introduced. To remind you, Android 14 brings several new features, including native spatial audio support, cross-device copy and paste, and a new media player. The Material You interface has been upgraded and the privacy and security have seen improvements.

iQOO 12 Indian launch timeline tipped, will be the first SD8 Gen 3 smartphone in the country

Leaked information suggests the iQOO 12 will feature an E7 AMOLED panel with a 2K resolution and an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is expected to be coupled with the Adreno 750 GPU for robust performance.

Regarding memory and storage, users can choose between 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Although Google has already launched Android 14, it looks like the iQOO 12 could run on Origin OS 4.0, based on Android 13 out of the box.

A detailed camera leak reveals that the iQOO 12 will have some powerful sensors onboard including a 50MP wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3X optical zoom.

The device is expected to be powered by a 5000mAh battery and supports an impressive 200W fast charging, reducing downtime significantly.

However, the ongoing US sanctions pose a significant disadvantage for the company. Due to 5G restrictions, Huawei had to use 4G modems in Snapdragon processors until recently. However, it recently launched a device with a Kirin 9000S, a 7nm process 5G processor.

Huawei is expected to use the same processor in its upcoming P70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro models. Emerging details suggest that the company has already begun sourcing large quantities of parts for the new smartphones. Recently, Huawei has been making significant progress in both its HarmonyOS operating system and its processors.

However, experts doubt that Huawei can achieve distribution numbers of 60-70 million units under the current US sanctions. Huawei’s chip manufacturer, SMIC, cannot go below 7nm with its existing lithography machines, nor can it access new lithography machines due to sanctions. Yael Maguire, Google’s VP of Geo Sustainability, said the system is unique in its scalability and cost-effectiveness, suggesting a potential 30% reduction in traffic stops. What’s more, city engineers can start seeing the impact within weeks of implementation. Results from Manchester show emission levels and air quality improving by as much as 18%.

Not to overlook the role of Google Maps here. By optimizing routes, the service has already averted around 2.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions. However, an exact date has not yet been revealed. Leading up to the official release, leaks and rumors have already unveiled key details about the upcoming foldable. In the latest development, a report has shared high-resolution images of the OnePlus Open, showcasing its two color options in detail. Let’s take a look.

OnePlus Open is essentially the same device as the Oppo Find N3 Fold, which is set to launch in China. The new images shared by Winfuture once again confirm this, as it looks identical to its Oppo counterpart. However, a report from earlier today showcased the Find N3 Fold in a flashy gold color option as well, but the OnePlus Open is only pictured in black and green. You may see the additional shade during the launch.

In the pictures shared by the German publication, the OnePlus Open is featured with a round camera module. We see a triple-camera setup along with a Hasselblad branding. The device also has the signature OnePlus mute switch on one of the sides. The foldable appears to have a compact profile. If previous leaks are to be believed, the OnePlus Open will bring a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display as well as a 6.31-inch panel on the outside.

It might sport the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. In the camera department, you may see a 48MP main camera with another 48MP ultrawide shooter.
