Panasonic’s New All-Solid-State Batteries are A Game-Changer for Drones and EVs

Panasonic Holdings has revealed that it is working on all-solid-state batteries with a focus initially on drones. Scheduled for mass production in the latter half of the 2020s, these batteries could be the answer to faster, more efficient energy storage.

These new batteries can charge up to 80% in about 3 minutes

What sets this new technology apart? The company claims that these all-solid-state batteries can charge up to 80% in just about 3 minutes. That’s a far cry from existing lithium-ion batteries, which can take up to an hour to charge fully. Imagine drone operators, not having to ground their machines for extended periods—leading to unprecedented efficiency in industries like agriculture, surveillance, and delivery services.

Panasonic

For the first time, Panasonic has showcased this emerging technology to the media and prospective customer firms, albeit keeping the technical specifics under wraps. Insiders do, however, suggest that these batteries can endure tens of thousands of charge-discharge cycles, dwarfing the typical 3,000 cycles that lithium-ion batteries offer.

While drones are the immediate target, the bigger picture is even more exciting. All-solid-state batteries have the potential to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) market. With companies like Toyota already planning to introduce these batteries into their EVs by 2027-2028, it’s clear that the automotive industry is eyeing this technology keenly. Toshio Ogawa, Chief Technology Officer at Panasonic Holdings, stressed the need for collaborative efforts with automakers for successful integration into vehicles, saying, “It cannot be done independently by one company.”

Samsung Galaxy A71

The September security patch has reached far and wide internationally, addressing over 60 security vulnerabilities found in the previous update. The patch will be visible with the build version of A715FXXU8CVI3, and the size will be around 485MB. These security fixes will provide the Galaxy A71 with improved stability and bug fixes. It is worth mentioning that the device has been running Android 13 for quite some time and may not receive the Android 14 update.

The Galaxy A71 owners can check for the new update by navigating to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Alternatively, users can go to Samsung’s original firmware database to download it manually.

Samsung updates Tizen OS for its high-end refrigerators, improving the UI design

Samsung has released many smart refrigerators in the past. These smart refrigerators are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity and SmartThings functionality. Making it easier for users to control the home appliance using the app across the major OS options (Android, iOS, and Windows).

Now, according to a recent report by SAMmobile, Samsung has started updating the UI design on high-end refrigerators. For those unaware, the South Korean tech giant’s home appliances and TVs run on the Tizen operating system. Samsung and Intel developed this Linux-based open-source operating system (now called Tizen OS).

As per the report, the icons in the refrigerator seem to be updated, which looks quite similar to the recent versions of One UI in smartphones. The patch should be visible with the build version of TIZEN 6.0.

The new UI design has made apps more visible. For instance, the Gallery app, Settings, and Calendar look more noticeable. This update might be the company’s attempt to improve the user experience by taking constant feedback. High-end refrigerator owners should be able to receive the patch automatically. However, it is quite unclear if this Tizen OS 6.0 update is a global rollout or limited to certain regions. We expect to see more patches like these in the future.

China’s Wearable Market Surges, But It’s the Kids Who Dominate the Demographic

In a groundbreaking report by IDC Consulting, China‘s wearable device market saw robust growth, registering a whopping 33.5 million unit shipments in Q2 of 2023—up 17.3% from last year. While that’s impressive, what’s more intriguing is the surge in shipments of children’s smartwatches.

True wireless earphones alone contributed to a 15.11 million unit shipment

While adult smartwatches witnessed an 11.5% year-on-year increase in Q2, touching 4.65 million units, the children’s segment wasn’t far behind. It recorded a 12.5% increase, accounting for almost an equal 4.77 million units. This suggests that the youngest demographic is quickly catching up to their grown-up counterparts, signaling a shift in the market’s focus. Could kids be the future of wearables?

The report also points out the reinvigoration of wristbands, which had a 20.9% year-on-year surge. Unlike smartwatches, wristbands are making a notable comeback, possibly driven by their lower price and focused functionality. Hearable devices, like true wireless earphones, aren’t lagging either. With 19.33 million units shipped—a 19.5% year-on-year increase—they’re certainly in the game. In this category, true wireless earphones alone contributed to a 15.11 million unit shipment, up 18.6% year-on-year.

Who’s leading the race? Unsurprisingly, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Apple continue to dominate the market, leveraging both high brand recognition and pricing strategies. Their growth showcases the market’s increasing centralization. But it’s the rise of the pint-sized customer that’s stealing the show. If companies want to stay ahead in the game, they may need to start thinking smaller—quite literally.

Stay tuned for more updates as we keep an eye on this shifting landscape.

Nio Phone likely to support 100W charging, reveals 3C certification

Nio is all set to announce its first smartphone, dubbed the Nio Phone on Sept. 21 in the home market. Last month, the Nio Phone appeared in AnTuTu’s database with the model number N2301. The same device has now emerged in the database of the 3C certification platform.

As can be seen in the above screenshot, the Nio Phone’s 3C listing reveals that it may ship with a charger that supports up to 100W fast charging. At present, there is no word on the battery size of the device.

Nio recently announced a refreshed EC6 SUV in China with a base price of 358,000 Yuan (~$49,820). The above images that were shared at the launch event, the company may have given the first glimpse of the Nio Phone’s front design.

From what has been revealed, it appears that Nio’s upcoming flagship phone will feature a curved display at the front. Additionally, the screen size is expected to be larger than the typical 6.7-inch displays found in most smartphones. Notably, there seems to be a dedicated custom button located on the left side of the device.

The above images also show that the centre console of the EC6 can possibly juice up the Nio Phone wirelessly. Hence, this also suggests that the device will come with support for wireless charging.

So far, reports have revealed that the Nio Phone will arrive with a 120Hz AMOLED display, a 3.36GHz Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, a triple camera unit, and Android 13. The device is expected to arrive in three variants: 12GB RAM + 1TB storage, 16GB RAM + 512GB storage, and 16GB RAM + 1TB storage.

The OnePlus Pad Go’s microsite, available on the Flipkart app, has confirmed its design. It also confirms that the company will continue to reveal the key features of the tablet until Oct. 4. Hence, it appears that the tablet will go official in the first week of October.

The official render of the device shows that its design will be similar to the OnePlus Pad tablet. The rear shell of the device sports a dual-tone design, a single camera, and the OnePlus logo. While the OnePlus Pad is a high-end device, the Pad Go is said to be an affordable offering.

OnePlus President and COO, Kinder Liu, recently revealed that the OnePlus Pad Go’s display will support a 2K resolution and a 7:5 aspect ratio. It is expected to come preloaded with OxygenOS 13-based Android 13. The tablet is expected to come with a Content Sync feature for easy clipboard and file sharing between OnePlus smartphones and the tablet. There will be a shared hotspot for data sharing, screen mirroring, notification syncing, and call management, aiming to enhance cross-device integration between OnePlus tablets and smartphones.

The OnePlus Pad was released as the OPPO Pad 2 in China. Hence, it is likely that the Pad Go may break cover with the Oppo Pad Air 2 name in the Chinese market.

Huawei Kunlun Glass 2 on the Mate 60 Pro outshines Corning Gorilla Glass in durability tests

The Huawei Kunlun Glass 2 protection featured in the Mate 60 Pro has come out shining after going through a series of durability tests. The Kunlun Glass 2 is Huawei’s second-gen in-house protection and it seems to have outshined the Corning Gorilla Glass found in some flagship smartphones. The Kunlun Glass 2 helped the Huawei Mate 60 Pro survive a new torture test that involved being run over by a car.

HUAWEI-MATE-60-pro
Huawei Mate 60 Pro

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is Huawei’s flagship model with several improvements from its predecessors. It uses the Kunlun Glass 2 which is more powerful than the first-gen Kunlun Glass. Although the Mate 60 Pro is not available via official channels, the smartphone has undergone a new online torture test by PBKReviews. The device was dropped on a concrete floor repeatedly and it performed excellently. The Mate 60 Pro seemed resistant to cracking, shattering, and scratching after undergoing a comprehensive grit bath. The triple punch hole display of the Mate 60 Pro also stayed intact when the smartphone was run over by a car at low speed. The display was on and fully functional all through the test.

Accordingly, PBK Reviews have rated the Huawei Mate 60 Pro to be more rugged than high-end models like the Samsung S23 Ultra which uses the Corning Gorilla Glass. The Kunlun Glass 2 protection of the Mate 60 Pro has given it higher resilience and toughness than the S23 Ultra. Huawei is expected to feature the Kunlun Glass 2 in its subsequent smartphones. It is however unclear at this time whether or when the new technology will be deployed in other brands.

Market data shows the Mate 60 series is propelling Huawei back to the top as China’s top phone brand

The latest market data from China indicates that Huawei is on its way back to the top of the smartphone market. The company has gone through years of turbulence triggered by the US sanctions regime back in 2020. The launch of the Huawei Mate 60 series and the Huawei Mate has seemingly powered the brand to the top of the market.

Huawei_Mate_60_Pro

The market data showed that Huawei’s market share jumped from 10.3% to 17% between the 33rd and 36th week of 2023. Xiaomi was the leading brand in China a few weeks back (at 18.4%) but has declined to 14%. Former Huawei sub-brand Honor had a marginal decline in its market share from 17.7% to 17.2%. Other leading brands in the Chinese smartphone market are OPPO, vivo, and Apple. There has been a reshuffling of the market with the strong showing of the Huawei Mate 60 series and the Huawei Mate.

Huawei’s powerful performance this year will become more visible by the fourth quarter of 2023. It is expected to close the year strongly as the market leader in China. This will lead to a reshuffle of the top five brands in China, as Huawei will dethrone one brand among Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and Honor from the topmost position. Apple remains on the fringes of the Chinese smartphone market with less than significant growth.

Recently, the flagship Huawei Mate 60 Pro came out smoking after a grueling durability test. It was able to withstand a fall on a concrete floor or being run over by a car. The Huawei Kunlun Glass 2 protection in the high-end device was more durable than the Corning Gorilla Glass in the Samsung S23 Ultra.

New Hyundai, Genesis and Lexus Electric Cars Pass the IIHS Safety Test

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has added three electric cars to its Top Safety Pick+ list for 2023: Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Lexus RZ 450e. What stands out this year is the focus on night-time pedestrian safety, aligning with increased rates of pedestrian accidents after dark.

The GV70 is built on the same architecture as its gas-powered version

These vehicles underwent extensive tests for crash protection and crash prevention tech. Both Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Lexus RZ 450e achieved “superior ratings” in vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash tests in low-light conditions, while the Genesis Electrified GV70 followed closely with an “advanced rating.”

Electric

Interestingly, the GV70 is built on the same architecture as its gas-powered version, not the Electric-Global Modular Architecture (E-GMP) that underpins the Ioniq 6. This design choice didn’t impact its safety, with the GV70 also noted for having the best headlights among the three.

IIHS President David Harkey stressed the importance of comprehensive front crash prevention systems in these electric cars, both for day and night, saying, “Night-time pedestrian safety is a growing concern.” The inclusion of low-light safety measures in these vehicles depicts an industry shift towards more holistic road safety. It also serves as a crucial step toward the IIHS’s aim for zero traffic fatalities.

Huawei Mate X5 Collector’s Edition repairs are nearly as expensive as a new iPhone 15 Pro

Huawei has released a list of spare parts for its latest foldable smartphone, the Mate X5. The prices are nearly as shocking as the price of the phone itself. In fact, some repairs for the highest-end Collector’s Edition could cost nearly as much as a brand-new iPhone 15 Pro.

For example, a replacement main display for the Mate X5 standard edition costs 5,199 yuan (~US$714), and a new cover display costs another 999 yuan (~US$137). Together, these two parts cost more than the starting price of the iPhone 15 in China, which starts at 5,999 yuan (US$824).

The spare parts for the Mate X5 Collector’s Edition are even more expensive. For those unaware, the Collector Edition is the only variant of Mate X5 to have a 16GB/1TB configuration. Reportedly, a replacement main display for the Collector’s Edition costs 5,599 yuan (~US$769). The most expensive repair is for the motherboard, which costs 7,399 yuan (~US$1,016). This is almost as much as a new iPhone 15 Pro, which starts at 7,999 yuan in China—600 yuan more than Mate X5’s Collector Edition.

Having said that, it’s important to note that these prices apply to out-of-warranty repairs. Huawei offers a Care+ service that can reduce the cost of repairs for the main and cover displays to 499 and 299 yuan respectively, but it does add at least 999 yuan to the price of the phone at retail.

Still, the high cost of spare parts for the Mate X5 is a bit of a concern, especially considering the delicate nature of foldable smartphones. Even a minor drop or spill can damage the display or other components, and repairs can be very expensive. Especially for the buyers when the device becomes out-of-warranty. This is something that potential buyers of the phone should be aware of, especially if they are prone to accidents.

iPhone 15’s USB-C port can power a wider range of accessories

The iPhone 15 series has finally arrived, and it comes with a number of new improvements over the previous models. One of the most notable changes is the switch to a USB-C port. This is a welcome change for many users, as it means that they can now use the same cable to charge their iPhones and other devices, such as their laptops and tablets.

That said, the iPhone 15’s charging speeds are still slower than most Android phones. However, its USB-C port can now output significantly more power than the Lightning port. In fact, it can output up to 4.5 watts, which is more than 15 times the power output of the Lightning port.

In comparison, the iPhones with Lightning port could only output a maximum of 0.3 watts of power. The higher power output means the iPhone 15 can now power a wider range of accessories, such as external storage drives and other devices that require more power. It can even be used to charge other devices, such as AirPods and headphones.

The iPhone 15’s USB-C port also offers faster data transfer speeds than the Lightning port. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support fast USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds up to 10 Gbps when using a USB 3 cable. This means that users can transfer files between their iPhones and other devices much faster.

In addition, the iPhone 15’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort for up to 4K HDR video mirroring and output to external displays. This is a significant improvement over previous iPhones, which were limited to 1080p video mirroring with Lightning adapters.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: Leaked photos reveal new drone with RC 2 controller

DJI is reportedly gearing up to launch the Mini 4 Pro, a successor to the popular Mini 3 Pro drone. While DJI has not yet confirmed the existence of the Mini 4 Pro, new leaks continue to surface about it, suggesting that DJI is closing the announcement of the Mini 4 Pro.

The leak comes from the tipster @quadro_news who recently shared photos of the DJI Mini 4 Pro, showing it with the RC 2 controller. This confirms that the Mini 4 Pro will support OcuSync 4.0 image transmission, unlike the Mini 3 Pro.

OcuSync 4.0, which was first introduced with the DJI Air 3, extends image transmission to a theoretical 20 km maximum at a 1080p peak resolution. This means that users will be able to fly the Mini 4 Pro further and with more reliable video transmission.

In addition to OcuSync 4.0 support, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is also expected to feature 360-degree obstacle detection, which will make it safer and easier to fly. The drone is also rumored to have an improved camera sensor that can support HDR video and slow-motion video recordings at up to 4K and 100 FPS.

In terms of other features, it is expected to have a 48MP camera, a significant upgrade over the 12MP camera on the previous model. The camera will also have an f/1.7 aperture, which will let in more light for better low-light performance.

In addition to the leaked photos, a European pricing list for the Mini 4 Pro has also been circulating online. The pricing list suggests that the Mini 4 Pro will be slightly more expensive than the Mini 3 Pro, but still under the $1,000 mark.

While DJI has not yet confirmed the existence of the Mini 4 Pro, the leaked photos and pricing information suggest that the launch is imminent.
