Foxconn offers higher wages for Huawei workers in Shenzhen compared to iPhone production

In a move that underscores the shifting dynamics of the global tech manufacturing industry, Foxconn Technology Group, a key supplier for Apple, is offering higher wages to workers involved in making Huawei Technologies’ handsets at its production unit in Shenzhen, Southern China, compared to those working on Apple’s iPhones. The development has been revealed through recruitment posts and information provided by labor agencies.

At Foxconn’s FIH unit, which specializes in manufacturing Huawei smartphones and operates under the umbrella of Foxconn International Holdings, new workers at the factory in Shenzhen’s Longhua district are being offered an hourly wage of 26 yuan (approximately $3.60). This rate is notably higher than the hourly wage of 21 yuan offered to workers at Foxconn’s integrated Digital Product Business Group (iDPBG), responsible for iPhone production.

The FIH unit has increasingly become a vital player in the manufacturing ecosystem of Huawei and other smartphone companies, predominantly focusing on Huawei’s production requirements. Workers recruited by the FIH unit are assigned to different teams based on current demand, with a significant likelihood of being involved in the production of Huawei handsets.

This move by Foxconn comes in the midst of fierce production competition between Apple and Huawei, both of whom have recently launched new 5G smartphones in the world’s largest smartphone market, China. With the global push for 5G technology and increased demand for compatible smartphones, both tech giants are racing to capture a larger share of this lucrative market.

The wage differentials between Foxconn’s Huawei and iPhone production units highlight a broader trend in the industry. Foxconn has been known for its sizable workforce and production facilities in China, particularly in cities like Zhengzhou and Taiyuan. However, changes in market demand, geopolitical tensions, and evolving supply chain strategies have led to shifts in wage structures.

In the past, Foxconn employees could earn substantial bonuses and higher monthly incomes, especially during peak production seasons. However, according to an internal source at Foxconn’s labor service supply company, this year’s bonuses may increase by only around 1,000 yuan (approximately $137) due to reduced orders and a lesser need for workers.

It’s worth noting that Apple has been actively diversifying its supply chain to reduce dependence on a single manufacturer and mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions. This diversification has led to a reevaluation of wage structures at Foxconn, which remains a vital partner for Apple but is also expanding its work for other prominent tech companies like Huawei.

Foxconn’s decision to offer higher wages to workers manufacturing Huawei handsets compared to iPhones highlights the competitive landscape of the tech manufacturing industry and the evolving dynamics of supply chains in response to market demands and geopolitical considerations. As Apple and Huawei continue their battle for dominance in the 5G smartphone market, such wage differentials may have significant implications for the workforce and the broader industry.

Apple to issue software update to address iPhone 12 radiation concerns in France

Apple has announced that it will release a software update for iPhone 12 users in France after the country’s radiation watchdog raised concerns about the device’s emissions.

The French National Frequency Agency (ANFR) said that tests showed that the iPhone 12 emits electromagnetic waves that are above European standards. As a result, the ANFR ordered Apple to halt sales of the model in France and resolve the issue within two weeks or face a recall.

Apple has disputed the ANFR’s findings, saying that the iPhone 12 is safe and has been certified in countries around the world. However, the company has agreed to issue a software update to address the concerns raised by the French regulator.

The software update is expected to be released in the coming weeks. It is not yet clear what specific changes the update will make, but it is likely to involve adjusting the way that the iPhone 12 handles radio waves.

iPhone 12 Software Update France Radiation

The French regulator ANFR said that it would test the software update to see if it makes a difference to the electromagnetic waves the device emits. If it does, the regulator said that it would bring the model into compliance with European standards and lift the marketing withdrawal order.

The radiation concerns surrounding the iPhone 12 have also raised concerns in other European countries. Belgium, Germany, and Italy have all said that they are reviewing the situation. It is possible that other countries may also require Apple to issue a software update for the iPhone 12.

Apple is already phasing out the iPhone 12, which was released in 2020. The company announced its new iPhone 15 lineup on Tuesday, and the iPhone 12 is no longer being sold. However, the software update will be available to all iPhone 12 users in France, regardless of when they purchased their device.

Google won’t repair cracked Pixel Watch screens, leaving owners frustrated

Google released its Pixel Watch smartwatch last year, and it’s been a popular choice for Android users. But there’s one big downside: if your Pixel Watch screen breaks, Google can’t officially repair it. Google has confirmed that the Pixel Watch display is not repairable. This means that if you accidentally damage your screen, you’ll need to replace the entire device.

Google’s refusal to repair cracked Pixel Watch screens has been met with widespread criticism, with users taking to Reddit and the Google support page to complain.

TheVerge obtained a copy of a conversation between a customer and Google support, in which the customer was told that the company “doesn’t have any repair centers or service centers” for the Pixel Watch. Google’s hardware warranty page also specifies that cracked screens are not covered.

Moreover, a spokesperson for Google confirmed to TheVerge that the company has no repair option for the Pixel Watch at this time. The spokesperson explained:

At this moment, we don’t have any repair option for the Google Pixel Watch. If your watch is damaged, you can contact the Google Pixel Watch Customer Support Team to check your replacement options.

Google does not officially sell replacement screens for the Pixel Watch, and third-party options are also unavailable. Additionally, the Pixel Watch’s limited warranty does not cover damage caused by accidental drops or strikes.

This lack of repairability has frustrated many Pixel Watch owners, who have taken to social media to complain about broken screens and Google’s inability to help.

“I dropped my Pixel Watch and the screen cracked,” one Redditor wrote. “I contacted Google support and they said they couldn’t help me.”

Google partners with iFixit for Pixel repairs, and iFixit has even published a guide on how to replace a cracked Pixel Watch screen. However, iFixit does not sell replacement screens, so Pixel Watch owners would have to buy a used Pixel Watch for a replacement part.

This is a major problem for Pixel Watch owners, as the device features a domed glass display that is more prone to cracking than other smartwatches. Thus, Google must address this repairability issue at any conditions.

TikTok Fined a Whopping $368 Million for Violating Data Privacy of Underage Users

Another huge step has been taken with regard to TikTok, the Irish Data Protection Commission has imposed a €345 million ($368 million) fine for violating General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules. This news comes months after the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined TikTok £12.7 million ($15.75 million) for similar reasons.

The platform also allowed Children’s accounts to pair with Adult accounts

The root of the issue lies in how TikTok manages the personal data of its younger users, specifically those aged between 13 and 17. According to the regulator, TikTok defaulted these accounts to “public,” making their profiles and videos freely accessible to anyone. This setting, along with the absence of opt-in measures for features like Duet and Stitch, exposed young users to potential risks. Moreover, the platform also permitted children’s accounts to pair with adult accounts without validation, thereby further compromising their safety.

While TikTok is not the first social media platform to face scrutiny over data protection issues, its violations raise broader questions about the online safety of minors. The regulatory bodies’ active steps in penalizing TikTok send a strong message to all social media platforms to better safeguard young users. Unlike previous cases involving adult users, the focus here is on a vulnerable population who may not fully understand the implications of their online activities.

Though the Irish Data Protection Commission did not specifically investigate TikTok’s practices concerning kids under 13, its actions bring attention to the overall lack of secure measures for minors across the digital world. This highlights the urgency for not just TikTok but all online platforms to enforce stronger safety measures for their underage user base.

Intel Introduces Thunderbolt 5, the Next Generation of Thunderbolt

If you follow technology and Gizmochina closely, you’ve heard of Thunderbolt many times by now. If you haven’t heard of it or don’t know what it is, Thunderbolt is a high-speed input/output technology developed by Intel. It combines the features of several other technologies, including USB, DisplayPort, and PCIe, into a single connector and cable.

This makes it possible to connect a wide variety of devices to a computer with a single port, such as the popular Type-C port. Now, Intel has announced Thunderbolt 5, the next generation of its high-speed connectivity standard. Here are the details…

Thunderbolt 5: The Next Generation of High-Speed Connectivity

Thunderbolt 5 will deliver 80 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth, which is twice the speed of Thunderbolt 4. It will also support Bandwidth Boost, which can temporarily increase the bandwidth to 120 Gbps for video-intensive applications. In addition to its increased speed, Thunderbolt 5 also doubles the PCI Express data throughput for faster storage and external graphics.

It is also built on industry standards including USB4 V2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCI Express Gen 4, making it fully compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt and USB. Thunderbolt 5 is also designed to be more power efficient than previous versions. It can deliver up to 240 watts of power, which is enough to charge a laptop or power an external GPU.

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ runs Geekbench with the Dimensity 7200 Ultra SoC

Redmi is ready to launch the new line of Note smartphones on September 21. The new Redmi Note 13 series includes the Note 13, Note 13 Pro, and the higher-end Note 13 Pro+. The Xiaomi sub-brand has already confirmed many specifications of these phones through teasers. And while we wait for the official debut, the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ has now been spotted on the Geekbench website with the Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip. Here are the details.

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ has appeared on the Geekbench benchmarking site with model number 23090RA98C. The smartphone runs MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra SoC under the hood, which Redmi already confirmed through a recent teaser. To give you an idea, the SoC has an octa-core architecture and is based on TSMC’s 4nm process node. It gets two ARM Cortex A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz and six Cortex A510 cores ticking at 2GHz. The chipset also features Mali-G610 GPU for graphics. There’s also support for both LPDDR4x and LPDDR5 RAM.

Geekbench reveals the Note 13 Pro+ runs Android 13 on the software front and packs 16GB of RAM. This is likely the highest RAM variant and Xiaomi may bring an 8GB variant as well. The handset has scored 1,122 points in Geekbench’s single-core test and its multi-core test score is 2,636 points. The numbers are not bad considering the SoC inside the phone is mid-range at best.

Elsewhere, the handset is confirmed to feature a 200MP Samsung HP3 1/1.4-inch camera sensor with f/1.65 aperture. As per a TENAA listing, the Note 13 Pro+ should get a 6.67-inch OLED display with 2,712 x 1,220 pixels resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. The handset could pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 67W charging.
