Apple looking for generative AI talent globally

Artificial intelligence technologies are spreading rapidly. For now, OpenAI leads the race with ChatGPT, while almost all tech companies are working to get a piece of the pie. However, Apple seemed to be moving slowly and not making visible strides in AI. But recent information shows that this might not be entirely true. It turns out that Apple is looking for talent in generative AI. Here are the details…

Apple looking for generative AI talent globally

It’s certainly impossible to know a company’s future plans, but if you pay attention to the clues, you can get an idea. In the case of Apple, these clues come from job advertisements. The tech giant recently posted many new job ads in the field of generative AI, an area where it seemed to have no plans before. Moreover, these job postings were not only published in the United States, but also in Europe and Asia.

Apple AI

One such posting highlighted, “We are seeking a candidate with a proven track record in applied ML research. Responsibilities in the role will include training large scale language and multimodal models on distributed backends, deployment of compact neural architectures such as transformers efficiently on device, and learning policies that can be personalized to the user in a privacy-preserving manner.”

Unfortunately, there is no detailed information about the company’s plans regarding artificial intelligence. However, some claims suggest that Apple will use this technology to make Siri smarter and more functional. Yes, there are many AI chatbots already on the market. But none of them have voice assistant features. If the company can prepare this technology before its competitors, it could take its already superior voice assistant experience to an entirely new level.

India’s laptop and tablet import restriction will be effective from November

The Indian government recently announced controversial restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and certain personal computer categories, sparking immediate backlash from tech giants like Apple and Samsung. The policy, initially set to take effect immediately, has been pushed to November 1 after a three-month grace period was granted.

Restrict, React, Realign: India’s Controversial Import Policy

The move comes amid the launch of “JioBook 11 (2023)” by Reliance Jio, a company owned by India’s wealthiest individual, Mukesh Ambani. Priced at around $200, the affordable laptop mirrors a past incident when Reliance Jio introduced 4G phones during restrictions on foreign-made smartphones. Speculations arise regarding the timing and intent behind the import policy change, hinting at potential tensions between tech corporations and the Indian administration.

The primary reason for the government’s decision is to promote local manufacturing in the IT hardware sector. Major companies like Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG, Apple, and Lenovo, which rely on import-based business models for the Indian market, may face hurdles. Nevertheless, the move aims to boost domestic production and attract global tech giants to consider expanding their manufacturing units into India, away from China.

Interestingly, the DGFT’s (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) notification includes an exemption clause allowing up to 20 items per consignment to bypass import license requirements if they are intended for specific purposes such as research and development, testing, and product development.

To further boost domestic manufacturing capabilities, the Indian government launched the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 IT hardware scheme. Notably, 44 companies, including HP, have shown interest and registered for the initiative. As the implementation deadline approaches, international companies are under pressure to secure the required licenses if they wish to maintain their market presence in India. Overall, this strategy showcases India’s ambitions to become a major player in IT hardware production and reduce reliance on imports.

Lampago Electric Trike with a top speed of 28mph and retro design announced in Europe

The new Lampago electric trike with a retro design has been announced in Europe. The new Lampago e-trike has a top speed of 28mph (45km/h). It is produced by Turkey-based e-mobility solutions company Lampago. The Lampago e-trike is expected to debut in multiple European markets soon.

Lampago Electric Trike

The Lampago electric trike seems to be a chic and stylish alternative to a cargo e-bike or scooter. It does not require any license to operate as it is a personal mobility product. In Europe, a class AM or AT license suffices for the Lampago e-trike.

The Lampago electric three-wheeler bears a semblance to the iconic Vespa in some respect. It has a streamlined and rounded body like an egg. There are two doors (one on each side) and two seats positioned one after the other. The trike has two wheels at the back and one at the front like a conventional tricycle.

Lampago Electric Trike

The Lampago has 10-inch wheels and uses front and rear drum brakes. The total load capacity of the e-trike is 200kg and it lacks a roof. The Lampago thus requires the use of a helmet. It is powered by a 60-volt, 30Ah battery pack that can deliver up to 45 miles on a single charge. It is unclear the kind of electric motor featured in the Lampago e-trike but it could output up to 1,000W.

Pricing and availability details are yet to be released for the Lampago e-trike. However, these details should be available soon.

China’s H1 2023 Online Headphone Sales: Apple Dominates, Huawei Drops to Fourth

According to a recent report by RUNTO Technology, in the first half of 2023, the audio market in China experienced remarkable growth, with sales of headphones and earphones surging to 48.11 million units, a 6.6% increase compared to the previous year. The market segments, including wired in-ear headphones, true wireless (TWS) earphones, over-ear headphones, and neckband-style earphones, all contributed to this expansion.

Apple Airpods

The Surge of Domestic Brands: Huawei, Xiaomi, and New Challengers

A notable trend in the market was the balanced mix of both domestic and international brands among the top 10 online sellers. This indicates a shift in consumer preferences, with a combination of loyalty towards local brands and continued trust in foreign tech giants.

While Apple, with its global reputation, retained its position as the leading brand in sales, it experienced a slight decline in market presence. The launch of new AirPods models contributed to increased sales, but it couldn’t fully offset the decrease in older model sales. As a result, Apple’s market share decreased by 2.6%, settling at 23% in the first half of 2023.

RUNTO headphone sale report H1 2023

Despite this decline, Apple remains a dominant player in the market. However, competition has intensified as established international brands like Sony, Bose, and Beats now face competition from domestic mobile brands. Fortunately, the introduction of new Bluetooth and TWS headphones has helped these international brands maintain positive growth.

On the domestic front, giants like Huawei and Xiaomi, as well as specialized audio firms like Edifier and 1MORE, faced competition from newer entrants. Brands like OPPO and Vivo, known for their mobile devices, made a strong impact in the audio segment, eroding the market share of established players.

The market dynamics are ever-changing, with both established and new brands constantly innovating to capture consumer interest. The second half of 2023 will be critical in determining whether these trends persist or if there will be further disruptions in the market.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE pricing for India raises eyebrows

After launching the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series tablets last week, the brand is now working on the Galaxy Tab S9 Fan Edition tablets. So far, there is news of the brand working on two models: the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE

According to tipster Roland Quandt, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE’s WiFi-only variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage might be priced at ₹63,000 ($762) in India. While the brand has not confirmed this yet, if the pricing is indeed accurate, it could pose a challenge for the brand as the previous-generation premium Galaxy Tab S8 is currently available for about ₹51,000 ($617) in India.

Leaks suggest that the tablet will be powered by an Exynos 1380 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM/8GB and 128GB storage. It is also said to feature a single-camera sensor and an LCD display measuring 10.9-inches.

Compared to that, the Galaxy Tab S8 features an 11-inch LPTS display with 2560 x 1600 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It also has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship chipset under the hood, paired with a 5,800mAh battery, a 13MP primary sensor, and a 6MP front camera.

What’s new in this update?

The new prompt examples will help users better formulate their inquiries by providing helpful suggestions, replacing the previously blank initial page. Suggested replies will allow ChatGPT to propose relevant continuations in conversations, enabling users to delve deeper into discussions.

A notable change is the adoption of GPT-4 as the default model, replacing GPT-3.5. Plus users will now have GPT-4 as their default selection, and the AI will remember the user’s last chosen model, eliminating the need for manual switching.

The update will also allow users to upload multiple files, enabling ChatGPT to analyze and derive insights from several files simultaneously. This capability will be available with the Code Interpreter beta for all Plus users.

Users will also experience improved login duration, as the AI will now keep them logged in for more extended periods, eliminating the need to log in every two weeks. Additionally, OpenAI has introduced a friendlier login page to enhance the user experience.

To facilitate faster access to ChatGPT functions, OpenAI has introduced keyboard shortcuts. For example, ‘Ctrl + Shift + C’ will copy code blocks, and ‘Ctrl + /’ will display the full list of shortcuts.

OpenAI is also working on GPT-5, an advanced language model, as suggested by trademark filings. Speculated features include reduced hallucinations, multi-modal capabilities, improved memory, and more parameters. Although there is no official confirmation of the launch yet.

Using Email for Enhanced WhatsApp Security

Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced various security features, such as protection against unauthorized transfers of accounts to different devices, defense against WhatsApp-exploiting malware, and simplified security code verification through automated codes, showing their commitment to user security.

The new beta update suggests WhatsApp’s intention to introduce a security feature tied to users’ email addresses, adding an extra layer of protection. The feature will be optional and separate from the existing two-step verification process, which also uses email addresses.
